The Serpent Prince is a blade sharpened with intrigue and hardened in the fires of betrayal. Who will rise in the aftermath of chaos? And who will be swallowed by the serpent's coil?
Imani flees her home as a wanted murderer.
Betrayed, she seeks to regain her footing in Niflheim and vows retribution against those who wronged her. She will let nothing block her path to vengeance: there will be a reckoning, and she will spare no one who stands in her way.
Yet despite being used by everyone she knows, Imani turns to the only people she can, burrowing herself deeper into the lives of her former allies to uncover their secrets—and her own. But the longer Imani immerses herself in the politics of the Niflheim Kingdom, the less sure she becomes of anything—allies, enemies, wrong, right, evil, good, hate... and love.
Another more insidious threat, orchestrated by people beyond her imagination, lurks beneath the surface. With civil turmoil swelling in her own kingdom, the clock is ticking on Imani's plans. Faced with the choice of which side to stand with, she'll stop at nothing to come out on top—and the Serpent Prince himself could not foresee the cost of victory.
The addictive sequel to The Elf Witch, The Serpent Prince is a dark, slow-burning romantasy about villains. It's filled with political intrigue, betrayals, and a beautiful, unique magic system; perfect for fans who love Game of Thrones, Amelia Hutchins, Ella Fields, and Melissa Roehrich’s The Legacy Series.
Readers Beware: This book is for adult readers and contains mature and explicit content (see the author’s website for a complete list of trigger warnings).
Jacquelyn Gilmore has been called "a rising star in the dark fantasy genre," and writes fantasy and science fiction romances about villains. Her stories aim to push readers to enter new, terrifying worlds, and she's obsessed with antiheroes. She has over a decade of professional writing experience and a bachelor's degree in English literature.
Her debut novel, "The Elf Witch," weaves a tale of magic, betrayal, and romance, and has been described as "captivating" and a "must-read" for fans of dark fantasy. It's received rave reviews, with the book being praised for its unique blend of dark magic, political intrigue, and complex characters, including one reviewer who calls it "an absolute masterpiece of dark fantasy." The sequel, "The Serpent Prince," grabs readers with more shocking plot twists, a fast-paced plot, and slow-burning romance.
Additionally, "Dream in the Ash," the first book in Gilmore's second series, "The Other Half of the End," is a dystopian dark fantasy (with a dash of science fiction) that explores a world where magic and technology coexist. It's slated for release on March 10, 2026.
"Someday, she’d break free of all these bindings, and Saints help her enemies when she did."
Continuing from book 1 (so if you haven't read The Elf Witch, this review might have spoilers for it), again, this is a dark fantasy romance. It is gritty and gruesome, not for the timid. The darker, more intense side of magic, power, and fated.
Kiran was keeping secrets. Love the side of his character that we only get fleeting glimpses of here and there.
"Her body was on fire. Guilt, humiliation, and desire made for a truly heady cocktail. How could she possibly still want him? ..... It was dangerous."
His and Imani's relationship slowly evolves, though still very much volatile and possessive in emotion and deed. But... there was a bit of a mood/personality yo-yo, hot one moment, cold the next. Until the tides turned and burned. And the cold darkness came, and utter chaos reigned free.
"A nightmare had unfolded. Ash fell like rain. When she lifted her chin to the sky, she coughed until she felt her lungs splintering."
Heart-poundingly captivating! Secrets, lies, deep soul-shattering betrayals. Unhinged. Morally Black 🖤. Brutal, malicious, and ruthless. Addicting. Left me in a daze... and wanting more!
"It made her bones tremble in fear at what was to come."
This world is incredible dark, intricate, and utterly addictive. Every book in this series just gets more layered, and The Serpent Prince took it to a whole new level. The politics, betrayals, and magic were woven together so flawlessly that I couldn’t look away for a second.
Imani is such a powerhouse of a character fierce, complex, and constantly walking that fine line between vengeance and vulnerability. I loved how her journey pushed her to question everything she thought she knew. And Kiran… chaos, charm, and danger all rolled into one. Their chemistry? Off. The. Charts. The tension between them had me grinning, gasping, and absolutely glued to the page.
The writing is lush and cinematic, the worldbuilding vast and beautifully detailed. Every twist hit harder than the last, and that ending? I’m still recovering. This series is bold, ruthless, and completely unforgettable. I need book three yesterday. Thanks to the author for the gifted ARC.
My mind is still reeling and my heart is still pounding as I write this. This book was EPIC! So many twists and turns, betrayals, shocking discoveries, lies and truths uncovered. I am utterly in awe.
The author has created a truly magnificent world of magic and two incredibly unique main characters. We dive further into the magic and lore of this world in this book and I devoured every detail. Its complex and vast and absolutely shocking new discoveries are revealed in this book. The layers and depth of the main characters is unlike anything I have ever read before. Imani, the FMC, is creeping on the edge of being completely morally black but has just the smallest touch of light in her still. Kiran, the MMC, is utterly unhinged and as morally black as I have ever read of a main character in a fantasy. And yet…
Dark, immersive fantasy unlike anything I’ve ever read. An absolute must for anyone who loves fantasy, villains, and insane plot twists. I want to scream it from the rooftops, “go read this series!”.
Tropes: heartmates magic witches/elves/shifters enemies to lovers morally black mcs shadow mommy fake engagement secrets
Where. Do. I. Begin? The Serpent Prince came in hot, filled with secrets, magic, shadows, blood, and power. Oh and it picked up where book 1 left off lol. Imani is headed into the Niflheim Kingdom with the Serpent Prince, Kiran, with the plans to spy for Tanyl of the Essenheim Kingdom. However, the longer she's in Niflehim and the longer she's bound to Kiran, the darker Imani seems to become. Will Imani cave into the darkness and side with Kiran, or has she been playing everyone all along?
First, thank you Jacquelyn for the beginning book 1 summary before the start of this book and the glossary. That was so super helpful as it had been months since I read The Elf Witch! Books need more of this, especially fantasy books lol.
Next... Imani. Girl..... I really liked Imani more this book. I found her character stronger and while our favorite Shadow Mommy 100% has some questionable morals, I think the fact that she proves she's out here playing the game- and learning as she goes- for her people, really made me respect her more. Which brings me to that questionable relationship with Kiran....
Kiran, Kiran, Kiran. The Serpent Prince. I have a love hate feeling for you. One breath, you stress me the heck out and I truly hate you. The next, I find your black soul to be sexy and I'm rooting for you. What does that say about me? Probably the same thing I think about Imani's choices when it comes to you lol. Seriously though, you can be a real prick but when you were in the Dwarves domain, I saw potential in you that I'm hoping we really get to see and dive into in next books.
There are so many secrets, betrayals, politics, twists to this story that I couldn't put the book down. That cliffhanger ending has me screaming and I can only imagine the journey Jacquelyn is going to take us on in book 3. Am I ready? Probably not but I'm excited lol
There’s just NO WAY. There’s absolutely no way things ended this way?!!!?! Guys I literally tossed my kindle! Wow what a freaking RIDE!!?
Okay sooooo couple things comparing both books, book 2 is WAYYY “quicker”. -Book one started slower to build the plot and build the world… book 2?!! Nope right into it! So that’s a huge plus for some. -Book 2 has a huge glossary in the beginning which is super helpful if you need to go back and reference different places, people, or species and terms. -And the final difference… IF YOU THOUGHT THE WAY BOOK ONE ENDED WAS SOMETHING.. THINK AGAIN!! Get ready for the cliffhanger of the year!! My goodness I’m speechless. Get ready for insane and shocking secrets and events. And full transparency here.. I cried 😅
So starting with how things left off at the end of Book One, I found myself so angry and upset with how everyone hurt Imani. And as more secrets and lies were revealed I found myself getting utterly annoyed with her naivety. Like girl STAND UP!! Get it together?!! -and then she did. My gods she DID!! She needed all of those events, all that heartbreak and betrayal to turn into the absolute badass she is!
Now that we know more about both her and Kiran’s true selves and species after so many shocking revelations… we uncovered more cards in the deck here.
⚠️this is where my possible spoilers will be⚠️ 1. The trip to the Under left me with still so many questions. Like did she actually see Ara again.. is her soul still with us, hiding, or part of Imani?? Idk but the wretched witch’s advice was all truth.
2. I STILL do not trust Esa.. at all. Even though she stood up for Imani, and Imani stood up for her when she was literally going to die, I still just don’t know.
3. Idk how Jacquelyn did it… but I literally feel like I’m Imani outside of the pages because how did I fall in love with Kiran just for him to shatter my heart? And the worst part is?? After what he did, I STILL cried the very next chapter for him.. from the very consequences of his actions!! And my little soul still wants them together. And all I can think about is the vision of his death. I really hope it doesn’t end with her being the other in the vision. And if so, I’m holding out for some insane theory that they’ll meet in the under and rule together. Idk somebody shake me, slap my face like he did her or throw on some shackles to WAKE TF UP!

The Serpent Prince by Jacquelyn Gilmore The Plot of the Six Saints book 2 Release date 10/28!
Thank you to Jacquelyn for entrusting me with an early copy!
Dark fantasy, everyone is morally black, enemies to lovers, spicy, shadow mommy, feminine rage, fated mates, witches/elves/shifters/more, angst, fake engagement, touch her and find out, plot twists, lies, magical bonds, secrets and hidden magic, so many plots, betrayal, more lies, did I mention morally black?
Tad bit spoilery for book 1 Book 2 picks up where we left off with Imani under the Niflheim princes' control and traveling to their kingdom. Kiran, the youngest and most ruthless of the princes, has her under a binding spell that can force her to do as he wishes. And he has lots of plans. Though, unfortunately, his tyrant father also desires to have her under his thumb. But as plots progress, Imani ends up being presented as Kiran's fated mate with Kiran sure he can fake their bond to make everyone believe it. But while she finds herself absolutely attracted to him, she keeps trying to remind herself that he is using her and isn't capable of love.
I could not put this book down! And oooof that ending!! Our morally black characters are back and at it again as they plot and struggle for power in this dark world. I spent a lot of time wondering if certain characters were going to be trustworthy and I will leave it to you reading to see what happens! I liked how Imani was making questionable decisions but she did recognize them for what they were and she definitely has a goal to get back home and protect her people! I also love a good summary - seriously I'm so glad more authors are doing this! And there is a glossary and key characters section at the beginning that is a nice reference! I am really looking forward to the next book after that ending - I can't wait to see what happens next!!
Thank you to the Nerdfam and the author for this advance reader copy. I loved the Elf Witch and was excited to delve into the pages of the Serpent Prince. I connected with Imani in the first book and wanted to see her evolve and develop as a character. The Serpent Prince was a story of complex betrayals and a deep dive into the political elements of the series. The magic system anchored by tattooed brands is genius and the author does a tremendous job of weaving it into her story. Imani continued to fascinate me as her character struggled with right and wrong, good vs evil. She is a deeply layered character, flawed and organic. I have never read another main character like her. This book’s pages take on a questing element, and the tension is well done. The pacing was an issue for me, and the author sometimes felt stuck on one idea and struggled with moving on to the next piece of the story. This was a high stakes plot, and the writing just fell short of the mark. Interesting though, the ending fell apart for me. The dark elements of this book shifted into depravity, and the story took an unnecessary turn in the final pages. Given that the story was about deep betrayals and plot twists, it did not surprise me that as a reader I felt betrayed by the ending and how Imani’s character developed. However, I was disappointed in the path that was chosen and my frustration at the ending outweighed my love for the characters and the series.
I’m so grateful to be part of the Beta team for the second book in her Six Saints series, The Serpent Prince. This series has me completely hooked, especially now with the addition of more from Kiran, the toxic & Morally Black, yet fascinating Serpent Prince.
The Serpent Prince is packed with betrayal, strategic power plays, fierce feminine rage, enemies-to-lovers tension, fated mates (heartmates), and a powerful journey of self-discovery. It masterfully blends various elf breeds, magic, shifters, pixies, dark angels, and unique magical abilities into a rich, immersive world.
The story follows an orphaned elf thrown into a complex web of royal intrigue and betrayal after her grandmother’s death. As she navigates a dangerous world filled with ruthless players, she begins to uncover hidden powers within herself, including a mysterious wand called the Drasil that promises to help her control these newfound abilities. She also learns she’s a High-bred Norn Elf (amongst other things 🫣) which draws her into the schemes of royal families eager to exploit her beauty and power.
In a twist, she becomes “fake mated” to the enigmatic Mad Prince/Serpent Prince, as part of his long-planned scheme. Along the way, secrets unravel, power is unlocked, and she gains a deeper understanding of who she truly is.
This book was captivating from start to finish, with just the right amount of spice to keep things sizzling. The ending left me eagerly anticipating Book 3. Overall, I’m giving this a solid 4-star rating. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️
I was so fortunate to be given an early copy of this a book as a beta read. When I finished the first book in the series, the Elf Witch I was hooked on this universe and after finishing the Serpent Prince, am actually frothing at the mouth for the next book in the series even though this one hasn’t even actually been released yet.
I have so many thoughts about this book and can say 1 million things about it that I love, but I of course want to wait until the full book has been sent out justttt in case anything changes (it better not bc I’m in love with it as is) as Jacquelyn continues her ingenious writing process. But I will leave a few surface level thoughts in case anyone sees this before its release and is questioning if this one of for them or not.
Let me just say if you’ve read the previous book and thought hmmm this is deliciously unhinged and dark you’re going to LOVE this one. It follows our same beloved main characters with a few new faces but carries with it just as much depravity, death, and disturbing romance (that I love) as the first book if not MORE. I am obsessed with this read and genuinely feel like the chosen one to have been granted access from the Gods themselves (Jacquelyn) to this early.
Imani needs to find the Drasil wand. She needs to learn to control her shadows so she doesn't kill anyone else. She is a pawn, playing a political game, while helping men in two realms. Unfortunately for Imani, she is bound to Kiran and must do what he commands.
Kiran and Imani need to help each other. They hold each other's secrets. Imani is definitely bolder in this book with her magic. When you think you can trust someone, don't. Jacqueline sucks you into the magical world and you feel as if you are in the story with the characters. You get so involved with the story, you realize you have read lots of chapters and don't realize it!!
There are some interesting revelations that keep you wanting more and you don't see them coming!! The story flows smoothly and plays as a movie in your head. What an amazing continuation of book 1 and I can't wait until book 3!!
Thank you Jacqueline and Book Funnel for the ARC. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
This world is dark, intricate, and completely addictive. The Serpent Prince builds on everything The Elf Witch started and takes it to another level. The mix of politics, betrayal, and magic is executed so seamlessly that I couldn’t look away.
Imani is fierce, layered, and constantly caught between vengeance and vulnerability. Kiran is pure chaos and charm wrapped in danger, and their chemistry is unreal. What begins as a fake fated-mate bond spirals into a battle of power, trust, and undeniable tension.
The worldbuilding is vivid and cinematic, packed with elves, witches, shifters, and royal intrigue. Every twist hits harder than the last, and that ending completely wrecked me. This series is deliciously dark, full of betrayal, morally gray characters, and the slowest, most addictive enemies-to-lovers burn.
With rich writing, shocking twists, and characters you can’t help but root for, this book has it all. The Elf Witch crawled so The Serpent Prince could RUN, and I’m obsessed.
I devoured the audio of book one, so I’m crossing my fingers I can get my hands on the audiobook for this one too! 😩
This sequel is crazy with the emotions I felt while reading it. I have never wanted to throw my kindle more but I am HOOKED. The tattoo-based magic system is genius and still one of my favorite parts.
Imani continues to be such a layered, fascinating and sometimes frustrating character. She’s bolder and darker here, struggling with power, loyalty, and right versus wrong in ways that kept me hooked. And Kiran… 🤯🤬. The tension, secrets, and morally gray energy between them definitely had me flipping pages fast.
That said, the pacing in a few sections felt a bit uneven, this world is rich but complex! Still, the story is packed with emotion, power plays, and shocking reveals that made it impossible to put down.
Overall, The Serpent Prince is a dark, twisty continuation full of betrayal, forbidden magic, and slow-burn tension. The ending definitely left me reeling and a little heartbroken, but I’m already counting down to book three to see where Imani’s story goes next.
If you love dark romantasy with intricate magic systems, going completely insane at times, and a fierce heroine fighting her fate this one’s for you.
First off — a HUGE thank you to the author for giving me the chance to read and review this ARC!
I devoured The Elf Witch and The Serpent Prince in just a few days… and wow, these books did not disappoint! Jacquelyn Gilmore knows how to keep her readers hooked — full of twists, turns, and constant action. There’s always something happening, and I loved every minute of it. Both books have definitely earned a spot among my favorites this year!
The Serpent Prince is darker, bloodier, and even more action-packed than the first book. Kiran, our MMC, goes completely off the rails, while Imani fights to survive his wrath and stay true to her mission. I absolutely adore Imani — she’s fierce, loyal, and determined, with a strong survival instinct and a heart that still tries to find the good in Kiran, even when there’s barely any left.
And Kiran? He’s the perfect villain — dangerously beautiful, wicked to the core, and impossible to forget. This story is filled with surprises that keep you guessing (and gasping) until the very end. I couldn’t put it down!
Jacquelyn, please keep writing masterpieces like this — I was sooo happy to see that final page announcing book three… but honestly, I needed it like yesterday!
This sequel did not disappoint! I'm obsessed with this series, its darkness, its characters, and the chaotic feeling of it all. Nothing is expected. I was completely amazed as the secrets revealed themselves, proving that this series and its plot will continue keeping us on our toes.
Imani, oh, Imani, my favorite FMC. She's so incredibly strong and smart, I loved her even more in this book than in the first one. She's growing so much, and watching her trying to care for and trust Kiran was lovely. Imani is now so powerful and always seems so unhinged; I just want her to win everything.
My relationship with Kiran is so complicated (LOL), I want to kill him and love him at the same time. I loved watching him descend into madness, but he needs to be clever or our girl will end him.
I need to find out how this story is going to continue. I have a feeling we just started to get to know the characters, and now everything is going to explode. Thank you, Jacquelyn Gilmore, for the advanced copy.
The Elf Witch walked so The Serpent Prince could soar! I ARC read The Elf Witch as well and I wholly believed that book had been setting the stage for something larger as we became immersed into this new world, the Mesial Realm. Keep this in mind as you’re reading both books for the first time, which I think you should because they’re amazing!
This book truly is like none other I’ve read in terms of plot, deities, magical abilities, hierarchical system, world building, and honestly so much more. There’s plenty of diversity not only in species but also character personalities that adds so much depth to this story. Not to mention we have TRULY morally black characters that are willing to sacrifice everything. This book was incredibly hard to put down!
I love when book 2 lives up to book 1. This was amazing.
I was so hyped for this one. I love a good morally gray character and this book is absolutely filled with them. Everyone has their own motivations and secrets and are putting themselves first, and it makes for such a fun story. When reading I’m never even sure if I know all the narrators secrets, and while I can usually figure out one or two of the twists by this author I can never get them all…
Imani is such a wild FMC to follow. She’s sharp and secretive and dangerous, but also has a softer side that rarely comes out. I love her as the main character.
Overall, I just love this series. It feels like there might be a book 3 to follow this and damn I’m excited for it!
Wow! Wow! Wow!!!!! This book continued from the Elf Witch and what an incredible journey Imani takes into Nieflheim. She finds herself is more compromising situations while also still keeping her search for the Drasil in mind. This book was gripping, intriguing, complex in places and kept me on the edge of each and every single chapter. The cliffhanger has me very much in my feelings and now with new questions I have, I look forward to book 3. ✨️📚✨️
The Serpent Prince is the second book in The Plot of the Six Saints series. It picks up where the first one (The Elf Witch) leaves off. This isn’t your typical slow burn romantasy. These characters are ALL morally black! There’s so many twists and turns, betrayals, and schemes that you question everyone! Brace yourself for the ending!! Can’t wait to read the next one! 🪄One Bed 🪄Enemies to Lovers 🪄Morally Black 🪄Dark Curses 🪄Feminine rage 🪄Fake engagement
OH. MY. GOD. 😭🔥💀✨ Let me just scream about The Serpent Prince for a hot sec because I am STILL emotionally unwell 😵💫 and I have zero regrets!! 😅📚(can you tell by how MANY emojis I’ve used?) If you thought the first book was dark, unhinged, and delicious… THIS ONE? Takes it to a whole new level of chaos 💣🖤 We’ve got more betrayal 🤯 more tension 🧨 more spice 🌶️ and characters that are morally black AF and I LOVE IT HERE 😈🖤
We’re back with our fave disaster main characters (Imani & Kiran 🫠) plus some spicy new faces 👀 and it’s just nonstop mayhem from start to finish. Betrayals? ✔️ Power plays? ✔️ Enemies-to-lovers slow burn that makes you scream into your pillow?? ✔️✔️✔️
The worldbuilding? INSANE. We’re talking elves 🧝♀️, shifters 🐺, dark angels 👼🏽, pixies 🧚♂️, magic 💫 and wild magical powers I didn’t even know I needed but now can’t live without 😩
Let’s talk IMANI. My chaotic QUEEN 👑💥 She’s powerful, raw, messy, caring underneath the armor and soooo real. Watching her grow and own her magic? Literal chills 🥶👏 She's the anti-hero I would 100% follow into battle ⚔️
AND THEN. Kiran. The Serpent Prince himself 🐍🖤 Toxic? Absolutely. Manipulative? For sure. Addictive? YOU BET. Their “fake mating” scheme had me screaming at the book and kicking my feet like a teenager 😭🫶 Their chemistry is explosive 💥, the tension is unbearable, and the SPICE? Whew 😮💨🔥 deliciously twisted.
It’s enemies to lovers at its PEAK. Slow burn hell 😩⏳ but worth every agonizing second. You think you’ve figured it out? HA. Plot twist. You think you know who to trust? LOL NOPE 🙃 The rug gets pulled out from under you over and over and you’ll love every second of it 💔
That ending though? How DARE it stop there??? 😤🧃 I have NEVER been so devastated to finish a book 😭 I needed book 3 yesterday!
If you’re into: 💔 Morally grey disasters 🧨 Enemies-to-lovers chaos 🔥 Spice with emotional damage 💀 Dark, gritty romantasy 🧝♀️🧚♂️ Magical worldbuilding 🐍 Toxic love interests you’ll still simp for
Then run, don’t walk to read this. It’s a full-blown emotional rollercoaster 🎢 and I am OBSESSED. 😩✨
Thank you to Jacquelyn Gilmore for the opportunity to read an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This installment in The Plot of the Six Saints series is a roller coaster! With all the betrayal Imani had happen to her at the end of The Elf Witch, you have to wonder how much more this poor girl can take. Apparently, quite a bit more.
I loved the focus during this book on Imani and Kiran, Imani's training and getting stronger, and their relationship. We get SO MANY HINTS that they are more to each other than what they know, and that pays off in the end! While Kiran can be such an arrogant jerk to Imani, he is also so so sweet to her. I loved their softer moments, and I can completely understand Imani thinking there is something more than just a transactional relationship between them.
Things just go off the wall bonkers when it comes time to cash in the favor Kiran needs, and the main reason they did their binding at the end of The Elf Witch. Imani finds out more about who she really is and why she has brands from the Under, Kiran is able to accomplish his main goal of being crowned king of Niflheim (quite a feat considering he is the sixth brother), and Imani discovers who Kiran really is to her. I felt her pain at seeing Kiran regard her so flippantly, despite actually needing her. And when we get a little more insight into his mind in the epilogue, we can see how much he regrets some of the choices he's made. But, because he was an idiot, he's now made an enemy of Imani, and it really seems like this will become another regret of his.
I truly wonder, given both of their feelings, how the rest of this series will go. But, both Imani and Kiran are also highly motivated to do anything it takes to get what they want, and it seems at the expense of their feelings. They both also seemingly accomplished their goals from book 1, at the expense of their affection. The Nymph Prince cannot come soon enough!
Some favorite quotes: If ignorance was a fruit, then for years, Imani had eaten only the ripe, perfect ones. Imani dressed with purpose, repeating the mantra that worries, jealousy, and heartbreak were worthless. Truly, some thoughts were a waste of time. Turning something living to the opposite was a thrill she'd forever revel in if someone deserved death. "Morals are for better people. Each of us here has blackened our soul in some way, and we will blacken it further before Niflheim welcomes us." "So, eventually, when you treat me like an object, a belonging, and a slave, I'm going to lash out. This is your warning." "I'd adore that, my bloodthirsty elf." How did he always do this to her? She wanted to punch him and kiss him at the same time. "You want me... more than you've wanted anyone else. And that scares you." "You want me just as much... and it scares you, too." There was that sense of rightness again. That feeling of being complete, as though she'd been half a person all this time. (one of MANY instances where it is alluded that they are heartmates!) Hopefully, someday, people would learn that making deals with her or imposing threats didn't end well for them. A vile, despicable creature. A monster. There was freedom in accepting what she had become. Most of the time, she wanted to be known as an intelligent, cunning female rather than pretty... "I don't want to risk anyone seeing your true feeding draw. Because I would have to kill them." Kiran rarely gave her real smiles... even small ones. She liked it immensely when he did. He didn't let her enjoy it, grabbing her wrist and stalking off the train with her in tow. "Will you be threatening to murder people the whole weekend?" "If you keep looking around with those perfect blue eyes... and glowing and glittering like an actual fvcking diamond, then yes, probably." "Believe me... I'm the only thing standing between you and a vicious murder at my mate's magic. She is small and lovely, but truly, she's a nasty piece of work. One of the many things I love so much about her." Something always felt right when they were together, like it was meant to be, a temporary star gleaming in the darkness. That light sparkled just for her because Kiran and Imani were connected by something mystical. Dark and darker still, they were the two sides of the same coin, one that could not be complete without the other. Trepidation slipped through her that Kiran would have to start considering her an equal when he learned about the Drasil. An equal meant a threat, and Kiran didn't take well to threats. Ara had taught her that freedom and dignity came before anything else, and if anyone tried to tarnish either of those things, Imani should lash out. Instead, she steeled herself, thankful for his treachery--it was the last time she'd fall for Kiran's lies. It dawned on Imani then just how much she had been willing to give up for Kiran. But she couldn't help feeling that Kiran had truly played her more than anyone else. Like a foolish idiot, she actually didn't want to take advantage of him. She wanted to protect him, help him... She loved him... and hadn't even know he was [redacted]. He had kept it from her, made her think he loved her back, tricked her into thinking he felt the same. He didn't. He never had. He had only used their bond against her without her knowing. "Days ago, you said you wanted me to trust you. This isn't the way to do it." "And for months, you've been saying you'll never trust me, so why should I keep on trying?" "I... could have considered it, but you keep taking away my choice--and I hate you for it." "You already hated me, so that more or less has no meaning." She got it, and she'd been such a fool... a fool in love. Ara had told her explicitly that he'd feel this way. Imani just had yet to fully comprehend the weight of the warning. "Let us be monsters together. What is wrong with being a monster, Imani?" Imani fought tears as she ignored the strange twist in her gut at the thought of leaving Kiran. The feelings were intense, but they were lies, too. She didn't need Kiran in her life--she just felt like she did. There would always be that slight tinge of terror at how dangerous he was and how monstrous he could get to ensure his goals were met. She knew he would stop at nothing to gt what he wanted--those shackles had proven that much. "You threw me away just now, and you're never getting me back." "We could have done great things together if we had been more honest. But... this is over. I have my own plans, and they don't include you anymore." "Whatever the lies and secrets between us, we are real. Both of us together is the most real thing I've ever known." "You won't get away with shackling me to your side, and next time, I won't just hate you. I will make you wish you'd kill me today. I will gut you with a smile. I will find out what matters to you and set it on fire." They both stared, a thousand broken promises within their eyes. "You're... the most brilliant, beautiful elf the realm has seen in a thousand years--and mine. My [redacted]. I won't lose you. I was given something precious, I know this now. And yes, I am the monarch on the opposing side of this war, but you belong here, with me." Somewhere in the depths of that unending dark wickedness inside him, Kiran loved her, too. But they were never meant to be together like one of Meira's fairy tales. Imani would seek out her vengeance wherever she could get it, even if it meant destroying everyone she was supposed to love. Yes, he needed Imani here with him. Yes, he desperately wished she were somewhere in the vast rooms of their palace where Zadie could simply fetch her and he could hold her in his arms. And no, he no longer wanted her chained up. That idea had been a colossal fvck-up on his part. He had panicked. He needed to keep her here any way he could--her magic and connection to his magic were too powerful to give up to the other side, no matter what he truly wanted. But he had acted like a king, not a [redacted]. "This world will tremble in her presence." If Imani had been here, he might have been inclined to show more restraint. But he was fresh out. A monarch needs to get their hands dirty sometimes, Kiran thought, and he knew his would be a mess before it all ended.
And the cutest pet names! Wild girl, my darling, my silly pretty thing, aomagho ruya (maybe?).
If you love dark fantasy with all the angst, fake engagement, slow burn romance, REAL enemies to lovers, love triangle, shadow mama and fire daddy, fated mates, and shocking plot twists, you NEED to read The Serpent Prince!
I received an advanced review copy from the author. This review contains my honest opinion and is being left voluntarily.

This series has me in a choke-hold! I am obsessed! I have physical, audio, and ebook copies of the first book and will be doing the same with this one! 😍
I have never been so devastated to finish a book. And that ending! I need more immediately..
I loved the world building in the first book, and it continued in the second. It is so complex, graphic, and immersive. I get totally inveted in the story, places, magic system, and characters. It is so atmospheric. It is beautifully written, not repetitive, with just the right amount of world building. The story and magic system are unique and clever. Jacqueline knows how to write a story and grip the audience instantly!
This is a dark romantasy series, which I think has become my new favourite genre. The characters are complex, morally black, infuriating, and totally lovable at the same time! There is so much angst, tension, and betrayal in this series, and I am so here for it! Just when I think I can see what is coming, curveball! Just when I think I have a character figured out, NOPE! It's an absolute rollercoaster of emotions, and I love it!
As this is a dark story, with complex anti-hero MCs, there is no insta-love or immediate HEA. This is gritty and tense. It is true enemies to lovers with the slowest of slow burns that will have you screaming and kicking your feet in both frustration and excitement.
Imani is discovering more of herself and her power. She's a badass anti-hero, but she still cares underneath and has a softer side that we get to see occasionally. She doesn't always make the wisest decisions, but she always does what she feels right. I loved her journey and character growth.
Just when I think I have Kiran figured out and start to get excited, I end up annoyed at him all over again 😅. He is brilliant and mad. I absolutely LOVE he protective and caring side. Is it real? Who knows! Kiran gives me some of my favourite tropes, and villain or not, I love him!
Miera & Tanyl make me so mad, and I can't wait to find out what is going on with them!
Tropes & Themes: 🖤 Dark Romantasy 🚩 Anti-heroes & Villains 💚 True Enemies To Lovers 🔥 Slooooow Burn 🔺️ Love Triangle 😫Angst, Betrayal & Tension 👤 Badass Shadow FMC 🔪 Feminist Rage 💀 Morally Black Characters 😱 Shocking Plot Twists ⚔️ Epic Quests 💍 Fake Engagement 🔮 Magic, Spells, and Curses 🧝♀️ Elves, Witches, and Shifters 🌶 Spice and Plot
As I was reading, I was so torn between wanting to know what was going to happen and never wanting it to end. I was honestly so sad to leave this world, and I can't wait to return.
Jacqueline has become an auto-buy for me, and I know we are gonna see big things.
If you like romantasy, fantasy, and dark anti-hero stories, you NEED to read this series immediately. You can thank me later!
Imani left her home as wanted murder. Betrayed, she sought revenge for those who went against her. She will spare no one who stands in her way. She is being used by everyone she knows, and she is burrowing herself deeper into their lives, pretending to be innocent to uncover each of their secrets. Dark secret precisely which will become power in her bloody hands.
Suddenly came turbulence, an unstoppable threat, orchestrated by people who, beyond her imagination, came to the surface to face the realms. The clock is ticking for Imani’s malicious, wicked plans, and she must face the choice; leash her true beast self or sacrifice herself for her beloved poisonous Serpent Prince.
The Serpent Prince is the second book of The Plot of the Six Saints series. This time, the story is darker and feistier than the first book. Yes, this book is darker than the first one. As for world building, it is expanded and there is also a glossary for it which is really nice and very helpful to understand what is going on in the story. Magical creatures and elements got exploration and expanded too, bringing a new era in the story. With the current level of world building combined with dark elements, it transforms this book into a high fantasy genre.
Actually, the tension and suspense level is higher than in the first book, but with more dark secrets, mystery, world building, magical creature and element exploration, it is properly good and I can still enjoy it.
The political affairs and strategies are getting more and more complex than the first one, and every action, even a small one, has a deeper purpose. We really need to concentrate on reading this book. Plus, everything is happening so fast and packed, so we will miss something if we do not focus while reading it.
For romance, actually I think this story can also be categorized as a dark romance novel because of… well, just read it guys! I won’t spoil it for you. Also, the romance is pretty angst on relationship between Imani-Kiran. Kiran is absolutely a pain in the *** and he is one of my favorite MMC now. He is toxic, charming, mischievously evil. That’s all I can say ladies! I won’t ruin your imagination in the future by telling you early hahaha. Second, the Imani-Kiran interaction is just… paintful, deep and sharp emotional destroyer. Plus, the plot twist in their situation is just, baddass damnn!!! Especially for Imani.
When almost the end of the story, the plot twist is everywhere, not just in romance. YEP!! Everywhere!!! The worst is the plot twist level is the mastermind and blowing, feel like just got bombed by nuclear weapons everywhere, dangggg!!!! This book is definitely one of my top dark romance and dark fantasy lists and I can’t wait to read more of Imani’s adventure! Bring it on!!!!
The Serpent Prince was a blade sharpened with intrigue and hardened in the fires of betrayal—every page had me gasping, questioning, and utterly hooked. From the very beginning, I was pulled into Imani’s story as she fled her home as a wanted murderer, determined to carve out vengeance against those who wronged her. 💔 Her world was already one of chaos, betrayal, and manipulation, but this sequel raised the stakes tenfold.
The political intrigue in Niflheim was perfection 🏰—layered, dark, and impossible to untangle. Imani had to immerse herself in the lives of her former allies (and enemies 👀), all while unraveling dangerous secrets about them and herself. The blurred lines between good and evil, love and hate, ally and enemy left me reeling. Every time I thought I knew who to trust, the rug was pulled out from under me again.
And then… Kiran. 🐍 The Serpent Prince was toxic, manipulative, and morally black—but in the most fascinating way. His long-planned scheme to “fake mate” with Imani had me both screaming in rage and squealing in delight 😅. The chemistry between them was addictive, sizzling with enemies-to-lovers tension and just the right amount of spice. Their dynamic was twisted and deliciously complicated, keeping me turning pages late into the night. 🌙✨
The story wove together betrayal, strategic power plays, fierce feminine rage, and a powerful journey of self-discovery. 🌌 Imani discovering her true heritage as a High-bred Norn Elf and unlocking the magic of the Drasil wand was epic—I loved watching her grow into her strength, even when it came at such a cost. The blend of elf breeds, shifters, pixies, dark angels, and unique magic made this world feel vast and immersive.
💫 Tropes & Vibes for the fellow romantasy lovers 💫 🔥 Enemies-to-lovers 💍 Fake mating 🐍 Morally grey/toxic love interest 💖 Heartmates / Fated mates 🗡️ Betrayal & revenge plots 💃 Fierce feminine rage 👑 Royal intrigue & power games 🌌 Unique magical world
The pacing was breathless, with twist after twist that left me shattered in the best way. The betrayals cut deep, the passion was intoxicating, and the character growth (especially Imani’s) was chef’s kiss 👏. By the end, my jaw was on the floor. 😱 The last pages had me clawing for more—how dare it end there?! I need Book 3 immediately.
This series is truly perfect for fans of Game of Thrones-style politics, Amelia Hutchins’s dark romantasy, and anyone who loves being emotionally destroyed and begging for the next installment. 🖤
Huge thanks to Jacquelyn Gilmore and The Nerd Fam for the ARC opportunity. 🙏 This book exceeded my expectations, broke me, and made me fall even harder for this world. Counting down the days until I can dive back into the madness!
This is a heartstoppingly dark romantasy that I couldn't put down. Imani along with many other witches were successfully kidnapped by the Niflheim princes and are on their way to their dark kingdom. The journey into that kingdom proves to be difficult and fraught with danger. While not exactly part of her plan Imani needed access to Niflheim to continue her search for the Drasil wand, but the situation she finds herself in leaves little time or opportunity to complete her personal mission. To make matters worse, her possibly ill-advised agreements with Kiran, the Serpent Prince of Niflheim, will lead to an unforgiveable betrayal. The characters in this book are all fascinating, and whether you like them or not they kept me engrossed from the first page to the last. To say morally gray might be an understatement when it comes to these characters. While their motivations are clear, their methods of achieving their various goals leans towards the very dark. Imani is beautiful, intelligent, strong, and doesn't hesitate to take what she wants. Then there is Kiran, he is even more ruthless when it comes to getting what he wants, and to say these two will clash is putting it mildly. While neither Imani and Kiran are not what I would necessarily call "good" people, I loved these characters. This book has it all. A complex system of magic, political intrigue, betrayal, brutal and sometimes gruesome murders, a well-developed and intricately detailed world that I thought was very realistic, and best of all there are enough twists and turns in the plot that I was left reeling. I couldn't put this book down and I highly recommend it to other fans of dark fantasy romance. I would also like to say that readers should pay attention this fantastic author's trigger warnings.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provided by the author.
This review is for the second book in the Plot of the Six Saints series and will contain spoilers for book one.
Imani is traveling to the kingdom of Niflheim with other witches from Essenheim and the two princes of Niflheim as the results of the trials from the first book. The night before they were to cross the border into Niflheim, Imani has a vision of her sister, Meira, in intense pain. Despite Meira's betrayal of Imani, it still seems that they are connected. Shortly after her vision, Imani overhears that the queen of Essenheim has passed away and her son, Tanyl is claiming to be the rightful king.
Imani and her group pass into Niflehima dn Imani is informed that she will be given to the king. When she meets him, the king declares that she will work with the Council of Royal Magic as an emissary to other elves. Imani, Kiran, and a few others leave shortly after. Imani becomes very sick during the journey from being unable to feed. She learns that Kiran has also been struggling, so they agree to help each other.
This book was full of twists and turns and when I thought I had things figured out, I was proven wrong. I love Imani and how she continues to grow into her magic, while also growing closer to Kiran. She no longer feels as lonely as she did in the first book, but her previous experiences make her refuse to compromise on certain things. Kiran continues to plot and concoct convoluted plans, but he is not the only one. This book was a wild ride from beginning to end. I loved the brief glimpse we got into Kiran's mind at the end and I can't wait to see if we get more in the next book!
Thank you to @jacquelyngilmore_books and @thenerdfam for the gifted eARC. I wanted to read this ARC so much, I applied everywhere I could!

Summary: A beautifully built world with a fascinating magic system, but The Serpent Prince fell flat for me emotionally. I struggled to connect with the characters—Imani feels distant, and Kiran’s actions (especially that ending) were hard to stomach. While the lore and tension kept me intrigued, the lack of clarity around the magic and relationships left me frustrated.
Full Review: After finishing The Serpent Prince, I’m feeling pretty conflicted. The magic system and world remain fascinating, and the stakes are higher than ever...but I struggled to connect with the characters this time around.
Imani continues to be a strong, capable heroine with impressive power, but she feels distant, and it’s hard to relate to her emotionally. Kiran, on the other hand, frustrated me to no end. His disregard for Imani’s feelings (especially that final scene) was a real breaking point for me. I understand that intimacy works differently in their culture, but the betrayal still hit wrong.
The lore and mythology of this world have so much potential, yet parts of the magic system still feel murky or under-explained. I did suspect but even that thread didn’t quite land the emotional impact I hoped for.
At this point, I’m undecided about continuing the series. I may wait for reviews on the next installment before deciding if I’m ready to return to this world. Many of the early reviews of this book are 5-star, so maybe it just isn't for me!
Oh my gosh, I TORE through this book and now I’m reeling that it’s over. I haven’t read a book this fast since Fourth Wing and Silversmith. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.
The Serpent Prince is the exciting (and excellently written) sequel to The Elf Witch. And it was *chef’s kiss*
I said this about the first, but Jacquelyn’s writing style is effortlessly evocative and so beautifully flowing I feel like I’m falling into a dream while I’m reading. And since we already powered through the heavy-lifting of world building in book 1, I feel like we were able to just hit the ground running in book 2. And not just running…straight up sprinting. From page one, this story did not let up, and I had to force myself (or life had to force me) to take breaks.
I think what I loved most about this book is that even though it stayed true to the darkness we started the series with, there seemed to be so much more hope and redemption simmering in the background than in the first book, and that kept me rooted to my seat and reading well into the night, even with eyes burning for sleep.
While the unraveling and riveting relationship between Imani and Kiran had me on my toes, it was the mysterious secrets the duplicitous Kiran kept close to the chest that kept me tearing through this book.
And when it was all said and done, I don’t even have words for the absolute emotional rollercoaster this book and its ending put me through. This was one of those ‘just one more chapter’ and ‘finish the book and stare at the wall to come to terms with what I just experienced’ stories.
Bravo, Jacquelyn. Since book 3 isn’t out yet, I guess I’ll have to start my reread.
As an ARC reader, I was excited to dive into The Serpent Prince, especially since I enjoy morally gray characters and slow-burn romantasy. This sequel is filled with political intrigue, layered betrayals, and a unique magic system that definitely stands out in the genre. Imani is a fascinating protagonist! She is driven by vengeance and constantly questioning the shifting lines between good and evil. I appreciated how complex and flawed she was; she never felt like a cookie-cutter heroine, and her choices kept me guessing. The Niflheim setting is richly drawn and dripping with tension, especially as secrets and lies unravel around every corner. The writing style itself has a lyrical, almost gothic quality that fits the story’s darker themes. That said, the pacing was a challenge for me. The story leans heavily into politics and slow-burn intrigue, which will absolutely appeal to readers who love tangled court dynamics. For me, though, it sometimes felt dense, and I found myself struggling to stay engaged with the story. I also struggled to fully connect with the emotional beats, even though the stakes were undeniably high. Overall, The Serpent Prince is a well-crafted, ambitious sequel that fans of dark romantasy will likely devour. While it wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, I can absolutely see why readers who thrive on villainous characters, high-stakes politics, and morally complex worlds will love it.
