Mystery and fantasy author Shawn McGuire loves creating characters and places her fans want to return to again and again. She started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that's episode IV) as a kid. She couldn't wait for the next installment to come out so wrote her own. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to tell a tale is as strong now as it was then. She lives in Wisconsin near the beautiful Mississippi River and when not writing or reading, she might be baking, crafting, going for a long walk, or nibbling really dark chocolate. Very interesting story about a Wish being granted by Desiree, who has to spend 50 years of her life helping people find the right path to make their dream come true. In this story she is assigned to Chrissy, who wants a better life path than her mother and sister.

I really connected with this book in so many ways. Chrissy has been forced to grow up before her time due to her mother and older sister not wanting to take responsibility. Chrissy has become mother to her baby sister, infant nephew, older sister and mother. No wonder she fell into an abusive relationship with Brad. She took all the abuse because her mother and sister seemed to support the relationship and turned a blind eye to the reality and at one point her sister told her to do everything she could to not make him mad. Her mother told him he was family because she was wanting him to bring his paycheck into the household. Chrissy made a wish to take her life down a different path other than the one her mother and sister were on. I fully supported her during this story because as her wish was on track she grew in confidence and started standing up for herself and then her baby sister and nephew. I was amazed and in aw to watch how she grew with each step of confidence she gained. I was provided this book free of charge in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Sticks and Stones #1 - A surprising, intense novel. Not knowing what to expect from this new-to-me author, I started reading a book that turned out to be mesmerizing. I couldn't stop reading this well written, thought out book with its interesting characters and storyline full of twists, even thought the age group doesn't interest me. I've had this book a while and am glad I finally got around to reading it. My next read is Family Secrets. 5*

Break My Bones #2 - Another intense novel by a very good writer. While there is humor, there is a lot of darkness for the young main character and her family. Well written and well planned, the storyline keeps the reader glued to the pages as the lives of this family is in turmoil and suffering. From her mother's drunkenness to her own rapes, the teenager takes care of her younger sibling and nephew the best she can and makes a wish for a better life. Desiree, the Wish Mistress, helps set the wish for success while making discoveries of her own. A good story that I would allow my grandchildren to read. 5*

Reviewed for my blog, Becky on Books.

Who hasn't made a wish or two (or two million) sometime in their lives?

Crissy Sheets's life is pretty miserable. Her mother's an alcoholic, and probably a drug addict as well. She and her two sisters all have different fathers, none of whom stuck around to help raise them OR saw fit to remove their daughters from the more than questionable parenting that their mother offered. Her older sister, Vanessa, at the age of nineteen is already the mother of ten-month-old Oliver, and Crissy's spending her summer babysitting him, her youngest sister Corona, and Corona's best friend and neighbor Jayden. She's only getting paid to watch one of the three--any guesses as to which one that is?

Her other major summer activity? Trying to keep her boyfriend Brad placated so he won't give her more bruises. Or worse.

Can you blame her for making a wish?

Shawn McGuire has created an interesting world here. Desiree, a former sixties flower child, is now a Wish Mistress; she facilitates people having the possibility of getting what they wished for by placing the tools they need to put themselves on the right path within their grasp. It's definitely not a fairy-godmother-like situation; no magic wands or helpful forest animals offer assistance to these heroines.

Crissy wants a better future. At the beginning of the book, she's afraid her life is on the same path as her mother and older sister--waiting around to be rescued by a man, settling in the meantime for dead-end jobs and Mr. Right Nows. (Or Mr. Tonight. Or Mr. Next Five Minutes. You get the idea.)
“All you gotta do is find that right man to take care of you and life is golden,” Mom had told me since I was Corona’s age.
Crissy's dated a bunch of losers--much like her mother and Van--but Brad seemed different at first. He was kind. He listened. He had a job. He bought her stuff. And then he got...intense.

He gives her a phone with a built in GPS unit, so he won't ever have to worry about where she is. (Crissy calls it the "Girlfriend Pinpointing System", but never to his face.) He texts her constantly, wanting to know who's she's with and what she's doing. He shows up, with little or no warning, expecting her to drop whatever she's doing to be with him. And he expects sex when, where, and how he wants it. And when he's having a bad day? Crissy just might end up paying the price.

She spends a 90+ degree summer in long sleeves to hide the hand-shaped bruises on her arms. But it's okay, right? Because Brad loves her. He says so. And he's sorry to hurt her, but if she'd only understand what he's going through and be a better girlfriend, he wouldn't have to.

Shawn McGuire does an excellent job of showing how a person can delude themselves into thinking that abuse is their fault. (It isn't--EVER. That's one of the best messages of this book, and Crissy eventually does get it, thank goodness.) Crissy starts her journey by making a wish, but ultimately she's the one who has to make the conscious decision to change. Her journey is empowering and inspiring, and though parts of the ending are a bit simplistic, overall I really like what Ms. Maguire did with her character.

Break My Bones is the second book in Shawn McGuire's Wish Makers series, though it works just fine as a standalone. Events from book one (Sticks and Stones) are mentioned, knowing the details of that book is not important for understanding the events of this one. I'm definitely intrigued by book three (will it be Desiree's book? I can't find a lot of information on it yet, other than a Pinterest picture of Desiree's bus on Shawn's website) and am not at all adverse to going back and reading book one sometime in the future.

May contain spoilers.

Break My Bones is about the main protagonist, a seventeen year old girl named Crissy Sheets. Crissy has no hopes for the foreseeable future. She is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend Brad, who is five years her senior. She stays with him because he treats her like a princess, yet is also physically abusive and a controlling douche. She doesn't want to leave him because he "loves her..."

...and, well, she doesn't have anyone like that.

Crissy has no father in her life because of her alcoholic mom, who got pregnant with her older sister at seventeen. That said older sister turned out to be exactly like their mother, and guess what, got pregnant at the ripe age of seventeen too. Messed up family? Yep.

Her older sister works a minimum-wage job, and parties. Who does that sound like? Oh, right! Their mother. Great.
So, that leaves Crissy to be the responsible one in the family. Yay! Oh, wait, no, probably not. She has to take care of her younger half-sister, and her older sister's baby.
This is not a win-win situation...

But don't worry, things change!
Late one lonely night, Crissy makes a wish - to not have a life similar to her mother, and older sister. It comes true!-ish

Desiree, the wish giver, comes to Crissy, and grants her wish...but there's a catch. The wish will come true and change Crissy's life only through hardship. So like the saying goes, things will only get worse before they can get better.

Crissy will need to resolve her issues, needs, and wants, in order to break free from the chains that bind her.

Annoyances
I absolutely hate it when a mother or father is addicted to alcohol, drugs, or gambling, and ceases to care about his/her children. The children grow up in an unstable environment, and sometimes have no clue as to what's right or wrong because they have a horrible role model. That being said, I also don't like it when their children follow the same path because that's all they know. I feel like the child needs to make better decisions and follow an alternative route, which could lead to a better life. Complaining about life, or expecting it to get better all on it's own doesn't happen. Like, ever.
That said, I really dislike Crissy's mother, and older sister, who gave up on trying to make life better. They affect their children, and lay all the responsibility on Crissy, who seemed to be a promising girl (education wise) in the beginning of the book.

I was given an ARC book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.

CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS

In Break My Bones, Shawn McGuire deals with an abusive relationship. ANOTHER trigger if this is you please proceed with caution. I almost wish I had known this going into this book, however the way she broached this subject and handled the outcome I give her high praises. I wish I had known self defense when the same situation had happened to me, however I did not. Shawn McGuire put that all women should have self defense class and I believe that so much, esp when/if they ever need to get away from any kind of attacker. I can not stress this enough that this book is not about a damsel in distress but about someone who did not believe they were worthy of being in a good relationship.

Crissy is in high school and makes a wish to have her life better and not end up like her mom or her sister's. Crissy is also Mandy's best friend. We met Mandy in Stick and Stones. Crissy's boyfriend tells her he loves her and then proceeds to harm her because he thinks this keeps her in line. She thinks this is one way of him, however no one see's the sweet caring side of him. Crissy is a summer babysitter and takes care of her younger sister, nephew and a neighbor boy. Everyone see's what's going on, even the self defense guy, except Crissy.

When will the beatings be enough for Crissy? Does Crissy take enough self defense classes to help her out when she needs it? How does her wish play out? Does she come out of this wish unscathed? Desiree is never, NEVER supposed to interfere with a wish. Does Desiree cross a line this wish?

I loved how Shawn took the subject of an abusive relationship used it to shine the light on what many people in an abusive relationship feel. Sometimes it is not easy to get out of. There is a number at the end of the book to call if you need help. If you do not get a chance to read the book, but read this review please contact the blog or the author for the number. What a remarkable book for the topic and how it was handled. I recommend this book hands down. Please remember it is a trigger book.

Shawn McGuire sure does know how to write an unputdownable book. Her writing draws me in and keeps me in until I'm done.

We pick up this with Mandy (from Sticks and Stones) and her friend Crissy. Now in the first book I felt like Crissy's problems and her relationship with Mandy were shoehorned in. When I learned book two was about her, I understood why. I still feel like it was a bit random in book one and book two holds its own as a standalone.

So I like that the McGuire doesn't shy away from the subject matter and Crissy pretty much has to go to hell and back in order to become who she knows she can be. She's slow to realize her worth and her toxic relationship, but when she does she makes the decision to make it better. Kudos to Crissy for teaching herself photography and taking self-defense courses and standing up for herself.

Now on to my big problem with this book and really what prevented me from giving it five stars. At times Crissy's home life was a bit too much like a Lifetime movie. I am referring to her older sister and mom. It seemed like a bit much for a book already dealing with something so heavy. I suppose the contrast of what could be and what was was so stark it fit into the story, but I could not abide by the slut shaming. Crissy had nice things to say about Vanessa and her mom, but it was often layered with things about how they dressed and acted and judgment upon judgment. I did try to give Crissy some leeway given her life and why she would think that way, but I still didn't like her attitude about it.

This book is certainly darker than Sticks and Stones. The subject matter is important and even made me uncomfortable at times, like it should. It was an excellent read.

I have won Break My Bones in a giveaway over at Kat's Indie Reads and because it's the second book of a series I read Sticks and Stones first (click HERE for the review).
Like the first book, Break My Bones is a very serious read, it's topic being domestic violence, the results of alcoholism, and addiction in general.
But thankfully the author didn't get stuck in the very real depiction of the above mentioned tragedies but tells us what is needed to break out. Besides a Wish Mistress, that is.
Crissy is abused by Brad, stuck in baby sitting duty and one day, she makes a wish - for a better future. And things take their course.

What is so amazing about this book is the story is told without any moral judgment; it just shows how to break out of a vicious circle by accepting help from friends and changing your self-perception. Shawn McGuire did an excellent job showing the reader that finding your inner strength and having faith in one self is all you need to create a better future, all by yourself. No one is too weak or too worthless to not make his dreams come true and start anew.

SUM TOTAL:4 STARS

Break My Bones was another 4 star read gifted to us by Shawn McGuire. It's serious, it's hard on your emotions at times, you may even find yourself in there sometimes, but it's great. And hopeful.
No fifth star because again, no Shakespeare. Otherwise, an excellent sequel.
Keep them coming, Miss McGuire!

All Crissy wants is a new life and one that will have her not turn out like her mother or her sister Vanessa. Her mother is a drunk who brings random guys home and is a druggie/alcoholic and her sister Vanessa is the same and has a kid to who knows who the father is. Crissy thought she had met the guy of her dreams - Brad but it turns out he is just like her mother's and sisters types of guys. He is controlling and abusive and physically abuses Crissy. With her best friend off to University , Crissy is not sure how much she can take before the relationship will actually kill her. So one night, she makes a wish or two on a shooting star, little does Crissy know that someone out there is a Wish Maker and it is her job to help Crissy grant her wish, but its not going to be an easy task. Is Crissy prepared to put in the hard yards and stand up for herself and help Desiree - her wish maker grant her wish or will Crissy find herself sliding back into her old ways and the wish gets put on the maybe later pile ? If Crissy does stand up to Brad , what will the consequences be ? Is she able to stand up to him and come out alive or will Brad show Crissy that nobody leaves him EVER.

This book reminded me a bit of the movie/book by Nicholas Sparks "Safe Haven".

Break my Bones by Shawn McGuire
4 of 5 stars

Crissy is 17, in an abusive relationship and hoping she doesn't end up like her mom and sister. Her mom is an alcoholic/addict, with several kids to different men and her sister has a 10 month old at 19. Enter Desiree, the Wish Mistress, she doesn't grant Crissy her wish but she does make it possible.

Chrissy has for so long put up with her boyfriend Brad controlling her every move, even putting GPS on her phone. He leaves bruises up and down her arms. Is Crissy strong enough to use the tools provided by Desiree to get out of this abusive relationship? Can she save herself from the same fate as her mom and sister? What does the sexy new neighbor Lance have to do with her wish?

I enjoyed this book. I did read the first one but like the fact it can also be read as a stand alone. I think there will be at least one more story in this series.

This is a quick enjoyable read that I recommend.

This is the second book in the Wish Makers series and tells the tale of Crissy. This book was hard to read to begin with as the emotion packs a whallop. Hearing Crissy justify what Brad was doing was hard to read about and so too were the reactions of some of those she told.

Seeing both Crissy and Desiree's journey through this book was both amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. You understand further some of the reactions that they both have and it helps to put it all together.

One of the best parts about this book was that there is no knight in shining armour (as such) who comes to rescue Crissy and lead her into a glowing sunset with a happy ever after. Lance is there to help her find her own strength and courage, to show her self-defense moves that might help save her life but he is not there to do it all for her.

This is a fantastic book which deals with a very difficult subject. Definitely recommended.

OH.MY.GOSH! LOVED this book. I don't know what it was about this book, but I loved it.
Crissy, poor Crissy. She has had such a miserable life, and she desperately wants to break the cycle the women of her family have started and perpetuated, but she is on the wrong road!
Brad is such a jerk, any guy who hits a girl deserves a whole lot worse than he got.
Crissy makes a deep down wish to change her path, and Desiree gets to help it get fulfilled. That's what I love about this series, I like the idea of looking at a wish and seeing what would happen to a life should that wish start them on a path to a new one.
We also get to know Desiree more, and she is a fascinating one. I liked this book a lot. Shawn develops the characters so well, and I am curious to see if anything happens between Kaf and Desiree!

Much more involved and exciting than the first book in the series. This earns 4.4 out of five stars from me. A word of caution to younger readers, this book explores the tough topics of domestic abuse, child neglect and drug use. It definitely has a dark tone and mood, although in the end, the wish is fulfilled (of course).
I never did understand Crissy's motivation, and why she was so different from her mother and sister. It didn't ruin the story for me but it made some things a little harder to believe than they would have been if that motive had been revealed (and supported with character experience and action).

This novel was a powerful and important story that I think everyone should read. There are many life lessons in the story and the author did a really great job of portraying these lessons in a way we all can understand and relate too. One of the main themes in this book is CHOICES. We all have choices and even doing nothing is a choice. Other themes include boyfriend abuse & rape, drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy and young mothers. Although this book has TRIGGERS, its also very thought provoking and a definite must read

Very good book. It just goes to show there is a thing called karma and it always catches up to you. I loved the plot felt like you were reading a Cinderella story. Crissy had to go through all this torture in order to have a happy ending.

This was very interesting, I started it thinking that it was going to be a pretty simple fantasy with a bit of fun but nothing to awesome. It surprised me, this entire series is all about empowerment and actually helping yourself to make a change in the world. Very much worth the read.
