Starstruck #2

Before He Was Gone

Rate this book
Lights. Camera. Survival. Falling for him wasn’t part of the script.

From the bestselling HarperCollins and Harlequin author. "Becky does it again, delivering a searingly hot, emotionally intense and brilliantly written love story.”

When Alyssa’s rockstar boyfriend dumps her out of the blue, she makes a wild, impulsive decision—she applies to Deserted, the hottest reality survival show on TV. And she gets in.

Soon, she’s whisked away to a remote island, stripped of every luxury she’s used to, and thrown into a high-stakes game where only the strongest make it through.

Enter Joshua—brooding, mysterious, and completely unlike anyone Alyssa has ever met. A traveler with no roots, no plan, and no interest in fame, he’s a stark contrast to the life she left behind.

As gruelling challenges push them to their limits, sparks fly. But in a game built to tear people down, trust is a dangerous thing. And Joshua is hiding something—something that could change everything.

The cameras roll. The world watches, and Alyssa must decide: return to the glittering life that wants her back, or risk everything for a new reality that might not even last beyond the final episode.

*This standalone book features some characters from book 1, Before He Was Famous, but can be read without reading book 1. It contains graphic language, sex and mature situations.

Ok, I'll be totally honest, I'm not a fan of the multiple perspectives in my reading. Especially when it jumps back and forth frequently. The author risks losing that voice that is unique to each individual character. I started the book a little pessimistic with the back and forth but I'm so glad I stuck to it. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself getting more and more into the story. It was nice to see Alyssa and Joshua grow and develop individually through their mutual support. The build up was good. The supporting characters unique. I couldn't put it down til I was done!

3 Emotional Drifter Stars

Alyssa Joannou, Noah and Chloe's childhood best friend from Before He Was Famous , has been dating drummer Sebastian Moreno (from Noah's band) for about a year, when he decides he needs some space so he can focus on the music. Not sure if she's devastated from the breakup or embarrassed that her breakup is playing out in the public eye, she makes a rash decision to apply to be a contested on the reality series Deserted.

Joshua Brenner has been running away for the past few years. Going from extreme job to extreme job. He's taken part in everything from Zombie apocalypse training weekends and hiking through remote villages. He's known as a survivalist trainer. When he notices the possible reward money for the reality show, he's determined to enter and gain a spot on the show. But he's hiding something from everyone in his life.

Once both Alyssa and Joshua are on the island in Indonesia with the other contestants, their attraction is undeniable. Alyssa will do anything to keep Joshua on the island as well and figure out his secret. Even when he pushes her away. Even when her ex, Sebastian, shows up the throw a wrench in her relationship with Joshua.

What's a girl to do, when she falls in love on a tropical island so far away from home, reality and everything or everyone she knows...? She learns who she is and what she wants and goes after it.

I though Alyssa and Joshua's story was so sweet. I knew right away that Joshua's extreme behavior was that of someone who thought he had limited time. I just wasn't sure in what context that time was. It was sad what they both went through in different ways. I loved how they had the same birthday and were both judged each other very wrong based on first impressions but soon realized they had a lot in common. I loved how strong Alyssa was for him and how she held her integrity throughout the competition.

My only problem is that the 90% of the book was about the competition and I wanted more real world time with the two. I got a little annoyed with the challenges. I know the author wants to give us the full effect of what happens like watching a season of a reality show like that. But, it just got to be too much for me. I was getting a little bored by they end of that part of the story.

Don't get me wrong, I really like this series and would definitely read more from this author. I like how each books theme is around a reality show competition and how it could change someones life. I just liked the first book much better.

This is a PERFECT summer read!

Becky Wicks is a hidden gem in this world full of authors. This is my second book by her and I’m very impressed with her ability to create a story that really pulls the reader in from the start. Before He Was Gone is written from dual POVs which is something that I’m in love with these days. I feel like it gives the reader a more in-depth look into what is actually going on with the characters. I talk a lot about flat writers in my reviews, writers that don’t have the ability to catapult me from my busy life into the pages of their story. Beck Wicks IS NOT a flat writer. At about 5% I was hooked with the story and I wanted to see how Alyssa was going to grow as a women and how she was going to overcome the problem all of us can relate too.

Before He Was gone is centered around a unique story line that hasn’t been done in a book (not one that I’ve read). Yes, we have all watched this type of story unfold on TV but to actually read about people on a deserted island and to feel like I was one of them was a new feeling to me. I was living on that island with all of the contestants from the show. I was part of their group trying to figure out how to find food. I can’t decide if I want to go eat a yummy Greek meal or if I want to go swimming in a waterfall. This is a testament to Becky Wicks writing style and story development.

When I had about 10% left of the book I actually took a break from reading it because I didn’t want to leave the characters behind. I wasn’t ready to let them go and I’m still not ready to let them go.

I am a fan of anything and everything Becky Wicks and I will be waiting for the next book of this series.

Time to go stalk the author………

Becky does it again, delivering a searingly hot, emotionally intense and brilliantly written book. I loved it. Like Before He Was Famous which took us behind the scenes of the music industry, this book gives us a fascinating behind the scenes insight into reality TV. It's a hugely entertaining love story with heart.

Set on a tropical island where contestants of a Survivor style show have to fight it out for the grand prize (all with very different agendas for winning) we're given not just a great backdrop for a book but a fantastic cast of supporting characters. I loved them all (well most of them). Some scenes will have you giggling out loud but mainly you'll be invested in the love story as two of the contestants start to fall for each other. But given they have to hide their growing attraction from the others and both are competing to win it's not an easy ride.

Add it to your TBR pile now! It's the perfect summer read. I think it's also on netgalley at the moment.

Wow! This was a super, spectacular read. It was comprehensive in such a cool way. I loved that it was funny, cute, sweet, and conflicted right up until the end. I believe I have sniffled for two days...no kidding. What Alyssa and Joshua had was special. I cheered for them and that says a lot.

I don't think I have ever read a book quite like this one, but I am so glad that I took a chance on this. Excellent!

I absolutely loved Before He Was Gone, even more than Before He Was Famous which I thoroughly enjoyed. Think C4's Shipwrecked meets 50 Shades, this is a sexy, fun, behind the scenes look at the world of a reality TV show, with a dramatic love story between 2 great characters.

Set on a deserted island during the 8 weeks of a TV game show, Becky Wicks again gives us brilliantly real characters and attention to detail that really brings the whole book to life. I was drawn in from the first page and especially loved the tantalizing hint of the secret that threatens Alyssa and Joshua and was desperate to find out more!

Very steamy, but not fluffy, this is a real page turner, beautifully written - I can't wait for more from the Starstruck Series!

Step inside a different world and get an inside look of what it’s really like to take part of a reality show. Think of Survivor—heading to a remote island to complete for 1 million dollars by taking part in some crazy challenges. You’d escape the life you live—have a chance to run from things you’d like to leave behind.

That’s what Alyssa does. After the breakup with her famous boyfriend, she applies for the hit TV show, ‘Deserted,’ and to her shock is chosen as one of the contestants. She leaves her job, her best friend, and all the drama of seeing her name all over the tabloids, to take on the challenge of surviving in the wild. A little drastic—yes, but she likes the idea of a new start.

Joshua is an adventurist. He is known for looking a challenge in the eye and seizing it by the balls. Applying to “Deserted’ is a no-brainer for him. With no real home, no cell phone, no regular job, he travels on expeditions and leads an adventurous, yet lonely life.

Alyssa and Joshua meet, and sparks fly. Their attraction and undeniable connection to each other can’t be pushed aside. They try to fight it, but can’t seem to succeed.
“We shouldn’t,” she says again, gripping my hand.

“I know,” I say…

I hoist her up around my waist. We shouldn’t, it’s all wrong, but I need her. I need Alyssa more than I can stand.

And so it goes on. They can’t deny it. Can’t stay away from each other. Their scenes together were hot! The sneaking away to spend hours worshiping each other’s bodies—really, really smoking! You can feel their desires in your bones.

Before He Was Gone Teaser

Alyssa is trying to heal her heart from her failed relationship with Sebastian. Joshua has a past and troubles he won’t reveal, but neither of them can seem to stay away from the other. They both contribute their own strengths on the show and often times work together to survive. But in reality, they are competing against each other.

I really liked Joshua and Alyssa’s chemistry and their characters, but not as much as loved Chloe and Noah from Before He Was Famous. There was just a little something missing, but I did enjoy the story.

I loved getting a look at what it is really like behind the scenes of a reality TV show. Lots of scenes are misconstrued and twisted to create drama and necessary angst to keep viewers tuned in. We see how the contestants change and how going without certain luxuries make them learn and grow. They begin to value what’s important, what’s real and who is a necessity in their lives. I loved the secondary characters as well and was excited to learn that Stephanie is getting her own book!

I did like Before He Was Gone, definitely not as much as Before He Was Famous, but it was a fun read just the same. Becky Wicks is a wonderful writer and definitely had a different concept, one that had me laughing in some parts and emotional in others. It was fun, fresh and different and I’m really looking forward to the 3rd book in the series!

Becky Wicks wowed me with the first book in this series, and I was thrilled to get my hands on an early copy of this follow-up! One part Survivor and another part tender budding romance, Alyssa and Joshua’s island escapades made my pulse race and my heart happy as they wormed their way into each other’s souls!

I wasn’t sure what to make of these two when we first meet them. They are in very different places in their lives but at the same time both at that crossroads where something huge could really shake them into the right direction. Something like a hefty prize on a reality show called Deserted, where they'll be stranded and forced to rely on their own wits and wilderness know-how. The question was, could they tough it out? Joshua seemed to be living his life as a reckless nomad, and Alyssa was in a Hollywood daze over her crumbling high-profile relationship. But once Alyssa started really thinking about herself beyond all of the glitz and glam, she really began to shine and proved without a doubt that she had what it took...and I loved her! And Joshua, well he won me over quickly with his immediate fall into Tarzan mode when the filming for the show started rolling! He shines as the nature boy who can handle anything thrown at him, and Alyssa didn’t fail to impress as she held her own at every turn. Together they were like the perfect jungle couple, and they gravitated to each other as a result. I loved their sweet moments under the stars, their stolen hot-hot-hot visits to the water, and the way they just seemed to complete each other like some kind of unexpected game show puzzle!

There’s a big twist that is hinted throughout but not fully revealed until late in the story, and I loved it even though it was a bit far-fetched in its delivery. There is more at stake here than just the money for Alyssa and Joshua, and it’s a heartwarming journey that left me smiling. Definitely another awesome story by the talented Becky Wicks, and a perfect end-of-summer read that’s sure to please!

Maybe it’s selfish of me but I want to know it all. I want to engrave it on my skull, never to be erased; the feel of her curves, the taste of her lips, the passion raging through me like a tsunami. I want her; her wit, her humor, her body, her laughter. ~Loc 2276

Review Copy from the Author

Before he was gone is my first Becky Wicks, a self published author. It’s the second volume in a New Adult series titled Starstruck. I don’t plan to read the first volume, Before he was famous. The two books turn around a famous band.

Alyssa, our heroine, is involved with one of the guy in the band at the beginning of the book. She is dumped by the latter and she must face the blogs and journalist because everybody knows her. To avoid the media hype, she decides to take part in a reality TV game, Deserted, where she must survive on a deserted island with nine other candidates.

I already read a book with this theme : Barbara Boswell with All in the game, published in 2002. So, when I read the synopsis of this book, I was intrigued and wanted to see how another author would write this kind of story. The two novels are the same with candidates, the attraction and the pacts between some of them, cameras everywhere and the fact that the reader never sees what is broadcasted on television.

Even if the author’s style is fluent and I read the book in one go, I’m very reserved with the novel, especially the end. When I read the synopsis, I didn’t know that the heroine would still be involved with her ex. I don’t like this thread. Because, in my opinion, the heroine doesn’t have enough distance to be sure she wants to live happily ever after with the real hero of the book. In Before he was gone, she has been dumped only a month ago before she meets Joshua, our hero. Besides, I had another problem: the lack of trust from the hero for his heroine. I can’t explain here because of spoilers but if you want to talk about it, feel free to do so.
Because of what I said, when I closed the book, I didn’t believe in Alyssa and Joshua’s love story nor their HEA. And that’s a pity because everything else in the book was good and the setting is so well exploited that we tend to believe that the author was a candidate in this kind of reality TV game. LOL

Anyway, I don’t recommend this book to traditional romance readers. But if you want to read a good adaptation of a reality TV game in words, go on.

Going into this book I wasn't sure how much I was really going to like it since it has a Survivor feel to it and personally I can't stand that show. I should totally know better, this was a wonderful story, and fun too. :)

I really enjoyed the first book in this series so I was definitely going to give this one a chance, even with my preconceived notions and all, as wrong as they might have been.

You don't need to read book one to read this one, but if you do you will meet Alyssa already and know her a little bit before you begin. If not, no worries, because you will have no problem loving her from the very start.

When Alyssa is dumped by her rock star boyfriend she decides she needs a change of scenery, something to totally take her out of the tabloids as the girl who got dumped by the hot rock star. What better way than to audition for a reality TV show on a desert island, right? When Alyssa wins a spot, her only goal is to win the million dollar prize to go to culinary school and start her own restaurant. Soooo....let the games begin, right?

Next we meet Joshua, who has a whole other reason for heading off to the island to compete for the prize money. We don't get to know what Joshua wants or needs the money for just that he does, so yeah, a little mystery in there as well! Of course this island has the most delicious cast of characters - the celebrity, the jock, the nerd, the hippie and the hilariously great gay man to name just a few.

As you can imagine, Joshua and Alyssa have an immediate connection, but they are also both really amazing at the survival portion of the game they have to play for the show. We spend pretty much the whole book on the island as one by one the players are eliminated. What fun that was. But as time goes on, with the manipulation of the characters by the shows creators, things get kind of serious and it was incredibly entertaining to watch this story play out!

Really nothing like book one in the series at all, Before He Was Gone was just as good and I highly recommend both books to anyone who enjoys a really good, entertaining story with a HEA.

I loved Becky’s Before he was Famous so was really pleased to see this. Noah and Chloe make brief appearances, but its Chloe’s friend Alyssa who’s the main lead. She’s just been dumped by band member Sebastian, and looking at her life and dreams, trying to keep out of the media firestorm that's descended, she applies for and is accepted on the TV programmer Deserted. That reminds me so much of a book I read when I first got my kindle Wicked Games Jill Myles which I just loved. Though they’re both game shows novels set on islands and follow the usual format of challenges and vote outs etc, they are two very different novels but I loved this one just as much. I also read another recently with same base but that was so-so, in fact I can’t even recall title or author...so its not that the format is a success, but the authors talent in using it to create a fabulous story. I love Becky’s writing style, she made me laugh at times, and cry at others, and a book that can do that has to be a five star read for me. Becky makes them all feel so real, and their emotions come across really genuinely. There was a really disparate group of contestants, and I felt as if I was on the island with them. Of course not everyone is what they seem and as we get to know them better opinions change from those first gut feelings about them. Special star for me was Shan, he was great with his GAYfronts and his over the top camp style. He was so cheery, and really kept spirits up – he provided lots of the laughs. I loved the connection between Alyssa and Joshua, and it was clear from very early that he was hiding something but what? And I did not expect it was that...and was surprised too at who ultimately won. I kept making up scenarios where different contestants could win, but didn’t guess what actually happened. The challenges too were excellent especially given some of the fears people had. Overall its a well balanced, easy to read story and a beautiful moving romance. Stars: One again Becky gets a five from me :-)

My review of: “Before He Was Gone” by Becky Wicks

I didn’t read the first book in the series, so I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t be able to understand parts of this book. That wasn’t the case. This is a standalone. It has references to the first book, but nothing that would confuse or irritate a reader.

I enjoy Ms. Wicks’s writing style. It was clear and concise. The pace throughout the book was excellent. There wasn’t a point when I was bored. I didn’t find myself doing housework while I was reading, which is a very good thing since I hate doing house work.

The characters were vibrant and alive. Relatable, likeable for the most part, and written well. I thought Wicks did an extremely good job in character development. Especially Joshua…yeah. I liked him. Anyway, back on track.

I was worried when I started reading that the book would be a knock-off of a certain television show. While I think the idea probably started there, the story was different enough that I didn’t think of the television show (much) while I was reading. There were similarities, but not enough to take away from my enjoyment of the book. I think Wicks’s did a good job of taking an idea and running with it.

Bottom line: I enjoyed “Before He Was Gone” a lot. I would recommend it to a friend for a light summer read or just a fun escape. It was easy to get sucked into the story and invested in the characters’ lives. This was the first book I’ve read of Beck Wicks, and I was quite impressed. I will be watching for her name circling in the writing community!

An easy Five Stars.

And Joshua gets my Five book boyfriend Stars.

**Copy Provided by Netgalley and Becky Wicks for an honest review**

It took me a couple of pages to get into this story and just like with the previous book in the story I could not put the book down once I had picked it up.

Again it focuses on another reality show, this time instead of a talent competition the group are deserted on a desert island with a few needed items and have to compete to in the $1,000,000 prize.

Alyssa is Chloe's best friend (the female star of book one) and things have not been going well for her and her boyfriend so he dumps her.

After seeing the flyer for the show she gets accepted and wants to put herself out there to be famous for being her.

Josh is a survivor teacher and has all sorts of crazy life surviving skills under his belt, but he also has a secret.

There is instant attraction between the pair and they have many things in common and really get on well.

Firm friendships form, games are played and life lessons learned on an island cut off from everything. All the competitors, apart from one or two grow as people, learn who they are again and some even face fears.

Our main characters really show a strong sense of self and you feel them grow, you feel there sadness and their happiness.

The author really has a way of sucking you in and taking you there, right with the characters.

I know that I will be following this author and I really hope there is another book in the series.

I was lucky enough to get my paws on a pre-release copy of Before He Was Gone and it accompanied me on what should have been a long train journey. The journey flew by, in a wave of sand, sea and sunshine thanks to this great summer story.

Perfectly paced to keep me turning pages (or clicking Kindle buttons, ahem), Before He Was Gone developed the character of Alyssa from Before He Was Famous with the style and vivacity I have come to expect from the author.

Quick-witted and unassumingly beautiful, Alyssa chooses to leave behind heartbreak for a desert island adventure that promises a life changing sum of money for the winner - not to mention madcap challenges, new friendships and a whirlwind romance along the way!

The description of a reality TV series was right on the ball, with both the highs and lows framed perfectly as well as showing evidence of Becky Wicks great research into the industry.

I loved Alyssa and Joshua's romance. Joshua's emotional unavailability made for a great mystery to puzzle over during dark train tunnels and their relationship evolved at a good pace instead of the popular 'insta-love' situation.

With an extra bonus chapter on the author's website, Before He Was Gone is a fantastically fun read and very much recommended.

SO I'm so glad I read this! I loved Before He was Famous, and I especially loves Alyssa in that book so her story definitely didn't disappoint!

I'm going to give the briefest synopsis because I think if I say to much I'll spoil something, it was that jam packed!

So Alyssa signed up for a reality surveyor show with nine other people, this is where she meets the super mysterious Joshua aka Tarzan. Literally dude is spearing fish and climbing palm trees. (The only thing I wish was that it was in the American metric system. I am so bad at the rest of the worlds metric system so 30 meters, I have no clue how tall that is to be completely honest, I went with 30 feet … But hey that was just me.) Anyway I loved all the characters, seriously Sham was my favorite. I wish the next book was about him and Marty! Gah.

The descriptions of this island were seriously phenomenal, Becky I'd like to know if you've ever been on a reality show on a deserted island because wow I seriously felt like I was there, so that was a big plus!

This book has a little bit of everything and a whole lot of surprises! I was really happy that it wasn't so predictable as most books can sometimes be. I love the premiss of the whole reality show, I've never read a book focused on that and it definitely didn't disappoint!

I definitely recommend :)

I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for this one and I enjoyed it from start to finish. If you’re a Survivor fan you’ll recognise the basic format in that a cast of sometimes hilarious characters have to face all kinds of challenges and fight for their survival on an island as they try to win a million dollars. But Before He Was Gone is a love story at heart, and a very funny, moving one that lets us see into both main character’s minds as they go through the eight week show and slowly, in some cases change their thoughts and ideals about the real world. We follow Joshua and Alyssa (who’s Chloe’s best friend from Before He Was Famous) as they fall in love, but it’s not always easy with all those cameras in their face and some people who are just out to sabotage everything. The scene with the goat had me laughing out loud - just read it and you’ll know what I mean. This is shaping up to be a fantastic series and there’s also some mention of the characters from the first book, although you definitely don’t need to have read that to enjoy this. I’d recommend the romance to all, just be prepared for the steamy sex scenes, especially the one in the cave! P.S Can I have a friend like Shan please?

My main problem with Becky Wicks first novel (Before He Was Famous) was that I got so into it I was late for work. Twice. No such problems with this, her latest in the Starstruck series as I read it in one go, straight off. Becky has absolutely mastered the art of page turning, racy, pacy love stories.

Set against the backdrop of a 'Survivor' style reality programme we follow the fate of the contestants through their time on an island. There are some great characters, funny incidents and of course plenty of romance.

A great summer read, rainy day read or stay-in-bed-on-a-Sunday read. Before He Was Gone is a bit like a packet of Hobnobs - sweet, indulgent and you have to finish them all in one go!

As soon as I started reading Before He Was Gone, I was immediately reminded of what a fun, fresh concept Becky Wicks created with this series... seemingly ordinary young adults catapulted into the spotlight of Hollywood fame. In Before He Was Famous, we met Noah Lockton and the girl next door, Chloe, who tried to manage their blooming relationship in the public eye after Noah wins a reality tv music competition that kick starts his music career. Before He Was Gone introduces us to Joshua and Alyssa, two completely different personalities who are trying to escape their own realities by becoming contestants on the survivalist reality tv show, Deserted.

I like this book because it's different. NA romances of late can be a bit cliche, a bit mundane. Becky Wicks' series feels refreshing. Her writing is wonderful, in my opinion... clean, polished, real. The dialogue is genuine, I believe in it. I can see it, feel it. There's nothing fluffy or flowery or cheesy. It's all just so believable and I'm a reader that loves believability, even in my fiction. And it's just so fun! The "reality" of fame and stardom might be much less exciting than its cracked up to be, but for a reader far removed from the lifestyles of the rich and famous, it's a really fun escape jumping into this series.

I really liked Alyssa and Joshua. I liked all of the characters and their quirks and their interesting contributions to life on the island and to this story. I loved the concept that Alyssa and Joshua find themselves on this island both running from realities they don't want to face.... for Alyssa, it's her public breakup with Sebastian, for Joshua, it's a secret he's yet to divulge. I thought it was so unique and well written. But, I didn't feel their growing attraction quite as strongly as I wanted to. I felt their superficial attraction, but I was missing the depth of their emotional connection. Still, I enjoyed their dialogue, the sexual tension between them... the giving in to the draw just to step back all too quickly. I just wished I could have felt their magnetism the way I felt it with Chloe and Noah in book one.

This story is really so much more than a romance. Deserted, this reality show, is such a contradiction of sorts... tweaking what really went on on the island for the sake of entertainment, yet at the same time allowing these characters to discover so much about their own reality than they ever knew. The scene at the end where Alyssa is cleaning out her office is so poignant in the scheme of things. In the beginning, we see Alyssa's internal struggle with public image, worried over what outfit the crew of Deserted will find her in when they come to whisk her away. Now, as she cleanses her life of all of the superficial things she held so dear at the beginning of the book, it's so demonstrative of how far she's come, how much she's grown and changed and discovered herself. This story is so much more than discovering a soul mate in the bizarre setting of a reality show, it's really about self discovery.

I can't say I loved this second story quite as much as I loved the first. But I certainly liked it and enjoyed it. Noah and Chloe's traverse through the proverbial rough terrain of their love story felt much different than Joshua and Alyssa's literal navigating of the jungle of theirs. Two completely different stories, yet similar in their plights to find what's real amidst the illusion and projection of the artificial lights of Hollywood.

There is something about a brooding hero that I love. Be it that quiet way of communicating, the emotions hidden within or the fact that they all tend to carry themselves with an air of arrogance--I don't know. All I know is that Joshua had it all.

Joshua is a loner. A drifter who spends his time from adventure to adventure, taking risks for Joshua is part of the norm. But behind all that bravado is a scared man who's looking for an answer to his problems. He needs money--a lot of it. So when the opportunity to win big comes along, he jumps right in. What he wasn't expecting was to find the one woman who would make him desire to tear down all the walls he has built around himself.

Alyssa is ready for a change--now more than ever. Having led a semi-public life in the arm of her celebrity boyfriend, Alyssa wants no part of that circus now that she's been dumped. Her solution: to participate in a reality show where she will need to shed her celebrity status and survive by any means necessary. Finding herself in a different environment and surrounded by a diverse group of people, Alyssa's comes to realize that she hasn't been true to herself in a while.

With new-found determination she sets to win the show. She makes friends, some enemies and finds the one man who accepts her as she is but keeps her at a distance that she can't help but want to erase.

What I loved about this story was how well the author mixed the romance with the rest of the story. I've read books about TV shows where a romance takes place but they were all lacking in one aspect or another--be it an underdeveloped connection between the main characters, the lack of a realistic set of events or an abundance of sex scenes that added nothing to the story. I can say with certainty that Before He Was Gone doesn't suffer from the previously mentioned characteristics.

From the moment Joshua and Alyssa met you could feel the undercurrent effects of their attraction. And as the story progressed and their interactions became more frequent you could see their initial connection gaining strength. I admit that there were moments when I wished I would have been more showing than telling in regards to their interactions. But in the end I still got that sense that their connection had deepened into something more, which is what's important to me in a romance.

Of course, it helped that they had great chemistry. And yes, as you probably guessed there were sex scenes. Hot, passionate ones. Quick, convenient ones. As well as intense and emotional ones. And I enjoyed them all! ;-)

As for the secondary characters, I have to tell you there were great too. The nerd, the gay, the mole, the mother figure and the stud--they all added something to the story. They brought about funny moments, hysterical ones and emotional ones too. And all of them served to move the story along.

All in all, a fabulous romance with a bit of adventure, a bit humor and lots of emotions.

You know when you fall in love with a book and then find out it's going to be a part of a series, but you know that another book can't possibly compare or exceed the love you felt for the first one, but then you read the next book and half way through you realize that it's possible you might just like it better than the first? Then you start to feel guilty because you feel like you should be more loyal to your love for the first book? Yeah, me too. I really thought that I couldn't love a story more than Noah and Chloe's in Before He Was Famous, but I have to say this is a really tight competition.
I liked Alyssa in BHWF but I fell in love with her in this story. She was everything you could want in a book heroine; smart, funny, beautiful, strong and full of heart. Throw in Shan and his crazy antics and inappropriate comments and you have quite possibly the most hilarious friendship ever. Seriously, everyone needs a friend like Shan.

"I thought Jaxx just had a case of the old Restless Dick Syndrome in my company. Guess not, huh?"

Next, of course, we must discuss Joshua and his recluse, save-the-world, moody personality. He was hard to read at times, though you knew something was going on with him. I just wanted to know why he was holding back so much. His secret and the things he deals with on the island are heartbreaking. It was definitely a knew twist/angle that I haven't read before. When you finally know what it is that he is dealing with, it makes the way he's acted and lived make a lot more sense.
This is my favorite kind of story because while there is a bit of mystery, a cast of slightly broken characters, and some backstabbing and game playing, the story is a sweet, realistic read that stirs up just about every emotion you can think of without being completely draining.
I'm not a fan of reality TV and especially shows like Survivor, but strangely that was one of my favorite parts of the story. It was fun and interesting to read about the different ways that the whole group survived on a daily basis. The story-line was written so that I was invested in each and every one of the characters and their stories, not just on the love story between Alyssa and Joshua. Which leaves me excited to read Stephanie's story next!!
I am completely and utterly in love with Becky Wicks' writing style and the way that she creates characters that are easy to fall in love with and make we wish that they were real and we were friends in real life. Which has led to the current battle for first place couple in my head & heart between Chloe & Noah and Alyssa & Joshua. I think it's easy to say that Becky Wicks has wormed her way to my short list of authors to follow.

Can be read as a stand alone but I suggest reading the series because it's so good.

“What Stephanie said before on the beach was so right. There are people who are meant to make us run, and others who we’re meant to run right into.”—Alyssa’s thoughts

What? Is this book trying to say reality shows are manipulated for ratings and it’s not all real?! No!

Ok, ok, it might be obvious that reality shows are somewhat staged! If you’ve watched reality shows—in this particular case, think Survivor—you’ll probably get a kick out of the setting for this book. Ten lucky competitors are deserted—well, except for camera men and staff—on an tropical island and have to fend for themselves in the wild. We have all the stereotypes—purposely picked out by producers—including our two leads, the mysterious survival guy, Joshua, and the celebrity girl, Alyssa. We pretty much have all the standard reality show drama inserted in the show, some producer-caused and some because the author had to find a way to make the contestants not be fame-seeking jerks. In truth—days are pretty boring for our castaways, but there’s nothing like editing magic to make viewers see what the producers want them to see.

Well, we don’t see viewer perceptions since we’re on the island with these ten people fighting to win the million dollar prize. For Alyssa, she’s running away from a bad breakup with her famous rockstar ex-boyfriend, the same ex which is responsible for said celebrity status. Turns out, being away from everything on a tropical island makes you look at life a bit differently, and I loved how Alyssa flourished on the island (well, other than the extreme weight loss and massive collection of bug bites). Joshua is a huge mystery for most of the book since he has this secret that he’s holding back. I figured his secret couldn’t be that bad, but once it was revealed, then I was like “OH!” Yeah, it is pretty heart-breaking, and I love Alyssa for how she reacted to his secret.

I thought this would be a simple fluff and fun beach read, but it had some great thoughtful parts while still being sexy (instalust and high heat level scenes—yep, apparently it is possible to avoid cameras!)—definitely entertaining. Because of the blurb, I had expected there would be a love-triangle with her ex and her having to choose between the two. Luckily there isn’t, because I wanted to punch her ex in the face, and I would have been shaking my head at Alyssa if she wanted to go back to that jerk!

The book started slow for me, but by the end I loved it, especially the ending. The book was predictable—particularly if you’ve watched Survivor—although it did have some fun twists to keep the drama going. Overall, this is a 5 out of 5 for me!

“This is my journey—just me, myself and I. And I’ve never seen the world the way I’m looking at it now.”-Alyssa

Why I Picked It Up

I absolutely adored book one and I wanted to read Alyssa, Chloe’s best friend’s, story.

Plot

Before He Was Gone had a plot that I haven’t seen in a book thus far. It centered around a reality TV show, Deserted, where a group has to survive on a deserted island and people get voted off until the last person standing wins the one million dollar prize. I had seen commercials for tv shows like this but it was so interesting to actually read the story of the players. It definitely did not lack excitement and I was glued to the book the entire read.

Leading Lady

Alyssa was the main character in this novel. Her story doesn’t start too well, with her boyfriend (the drummer in Noah Lockton’s band) breaking things off. Alyssa decides that she needs a change and applies for Deserted. She wasn’t your typical character. She reminded me of Katniss with her strength and determination to win. She was relatable and funny and an overall appealing character to read.

Leading Male

Joshua was somewhat of an enigma in this novel. He was mysterious in all facets. He was hiding something and that kept me wondering about him until the end. He was really closed off in this novel so it was hard to form a really strong opinion on him. From what I did see, though, he was pretty tough and a good leader. I wish we would have been able to see more of his personality in the novel, though.

Romance

The attraction in between Joshua and Alyssa was instantaneous, even from before they were left on the island. However, it didn’t develop very quickly. There were stolen glances and lots of tension, but a romance between the two of them could have put their personal game at risk. In addition to that, Joshua was shut closed like a safe and that didn’t help for an emotional connection. But the connection was there and you could feel the tension. They also had a friendly relationship which, in my opinion, made their eventual romantic relationship more real.

World Building

As I mentioned before, the setting of this novel was a reality tv show set on a deserted island. The world building was great and I actually felt like I could have been watching a tv show. It was unlike anything that I’ve read before and it blew me away.

Conclusion

Before He Was Gone was just as amazing as Wick’s first novel in the series, Before He Was Famous. With great characters and a unique plot line that I’ve never seen before, this book kept me hooked from beginning to end.

Sometimes, you have to get lost to find yourself...

Well, how about putting yourself on a remote island with strangers competing for a grand prize? Is that lost enough? For Alyssa, it was the perfect escape. Recently dumped by her superstar boyfriend, she was tired of being known as ‘that girl’, she was tired of her dead-end job. She just wanted to get away. When she finds out that Deserted, a hit reality show, is looking for contestants for their next season, she jumps at the chance to audition. What does she have to lose?

It’s on this island where she meets Joshua, another contestant. Joshua is the resident drifter. He never stays in one place for too long and he doesn’t have long-term relationships. Basically anything that will hold him to one place, he discards it. But he’s on the island with one goal in mind – to win. He needs the prize money desperately – although for what, we don’t find out until the end.

The Survivor-esque type background definitely fueled this book. We all know that reality TV is mostly staged and competition ones don’t always show things as they happen, but instead focus on what will get the most ratings. Before He Was Gone showed us what happens behind the scenes, what the cameras don’t show us. The island was a beautiful backdrop to watch Alyssa and Joshua get closer together.

I adored Alyssa. She knew what people thought about her – that she was the spoiled celebrity girlfriend. But boy did she prove everyone wrong. She was smart, a quick thinker, and willing to learn everything she could to survive there. Then there’s Joshua who was such a mystery. He never quite says what’s going on with him but instead his internal dialogue (mixed with other people’s observations) hinted at something big. I loved reading his scenes, he was very at one with the Island.

The side characters – aka the other contestants – rounded out this book nicely. Along with the challenges, the vote-offs and tribunal meetings, I felt like I was partaking in a reality show. You definitely do not need to read Before He Was Famous prior to reading this, what you need to know are mentioned in the story. And in my opinion, this book surpasses the first.

I received an e-copy of this novel from the publisher via Netgalley in return for an honest review.

*Before He Was Gone is the second book in a series, but each book can be read as a standalone.*

I'm a huge fan of New Adult, but many New Adult books have started to blend together, and I find myself feeling like I'm reading the same books over and over. The best part of reading is the experience and I've been in desperate need for an author to give me something new to experience. Becky Wicks does just that with her Starstruck series. She's found a way to put a twist on New Adult reads making her series fun, fresh, and original.

As a reality TV junkie, I feel like these books were made for me! In Before He Was Famous (book 1) we are introduced to Noah and Chloe during and after his stint on a reality television show similar to American Idol. In Before He Was Gone, Alyssa, Chloe's best friend, is the main lead. Following Alyssa's unexpected public and heartbreaking breakup with the famous drummer from Noah's band, she decides she needs a break from the chaos crashing down around her and auditions for a survivor-like reality show. As she begins to discover more of who she is and what she is capable of she forms a bond with another contestant. Joshua is always looking for adventure, but he was led to the show by more than just his need for adventure. He's full of secrets and looking for his own escape.

"There are people who are meant to make us run, and others who we're meant to run right into."

I really enjoyed this book, and read it in one sitting! I loved Alyssa and Joshua's relationship. It was full of two of my favorite things: sexual tension and secrecy. The secondary characters were such a bonus in this book and really stood out with their different personalities. They added so much humor and drama to the storyline.

I thought the author did a great job with the book's authenticity. From the character's dialogue and actions to the behind the scenes look and feel of the reality show it was all very believable. I found myself engrossed in the story like I had a backstage pass to the show.

Underneath the fun and excitement of an adventurous show like Deserted there was an underlying emotional story that really pulled at my heartstrings.

Although I have enjoyed both books in this series, this on is by far my favorite. I definitely recommend this fun, heartwarming, and steamy read!

You know why I like Becky’s books?

Because they are so damn original!!! Only she can manage to take us on a reality show setting and give us a beautiful love story.

This is her second book in her Starstruck series and once again she takes us on a journey of self-discovery, where we meet a bunch of amazing characters and the funny thing for me was, t even though I really loved the two main characters, I ended up being super invested in the other contestants of the show, and at the end of the reality show I had no idea who was going to win but I sure had my favorite.

In the front we have this beautiful love story between …… and …… We see them both heal and break apart time and time again, they really made me care for them really fast, getting absolutely invested in heir growing relationship and trying to guess how it was going to end. And in the backdrop we have this reality show setting where we are transported to a deserted island where contestants have to live up to 8 weeks, every week one new person leaves.

The whole reality show plot line was so interesting to me because as I said before it’s very unique and because there was a lot of drama and planning and it made me really angry to see how the production was playing with these people, how everything was planned to turn out exactly how they wanted and also the contestants, each a unique character, who knew that they were there for an specific reason or to fit a label but instead of being sad, angry or upset about it, most of them took the opportunity to really prove themselves, to prove that they are more than just a label.

I absolutely loved this book, amazing fun read!

I think I wanted to like this book more than I did. That's not to say this is a bad read, as I did enjoy this book, but I think my expectations were higher so I came away feeling a little dissatisfied. In general though, I'm glad I requested this book and gave it a chance.

I enjoyed the overall theme of being stranded on an island for reality TV. I've seen it done in real life so I was curious to see how the author translated it into a novel and I think she did a good job. I loved all the characters, they each had a strong individual personality that came across well. I especially loved Shan and his attitude. I think they dealt with the situations they were thrown into realistically and I was surprised at how fast the book moved along. I was glad that the author didn't get hung up on time between every eviction as I thought it would take forever to get down to the final. Things moved along quickly and it flowed well. Also, the challenges they face kept things interesting as the producers toyed with the contestants while a romance developed.

For me the best part of this book was definitely the characters. I didn't guess what was wrong with Joshua (still not keen on the name) until it was revealed and I liked how that was kept hidden until the end. I liked how they bonded and although I would have liked to see someone else win--because they surprised me and grew on me--I can understand why the author needed to do what she did. I did feel it made the ending a bit predictable though.

As well as this the only other little niggle I had was the killing of animals. I don't know why but things like that in books really affect me, even though I know it's happens. I can handle spearfishing but killing goats and chickens ... well I didn't need to read those bit really. It's just not for me.

Overall though, Before He Was Gone was an enjoyable read. It has great characters, an intriguing plot, and I may be checking out the rest of the series.

Hey guys! Don't forget, review Before He Was Gone on Amazon too (it really helps!!). I'm scribbling on book 3 (Before He Was a Secret), but here's a taster:

I close my eyes for a moment, trying to control my heart palpitations as the memories of that day crash over me like a tsunami. ‘I just prefer the guitar,’ I stutter. Breathe.
Breathe.
It’s just a stupid instrument.
‘Ah, but the piano is a different species,’ he carries on, almost in my ear. ‘You know, someone told me once that the white keys represent happiness, all the good stuff. The laughter, right?’ Conor runs his fingers quickly up and down the white keys, stops abruptly, looks to me. ‘And the black keys? They represent the sad times, the sorrow, the pain.’ He does the same on the black keys now, slowly, a different melancholy sound that makes me shudder involuntarily. ‘But you can’t forget,’ he says, bumping my shoulder gently, ‘they all mix up together to tell your story. You’re a little bit of everything at the end of the day. You’re a song.’
‘I’m a song,’ I repeat as he jumbles a tune under his hands.
‘Yes. You need to play me your story.’
I stand up again. This is all ridiculous. I’m ridiculous. ‘I don’t want to play my story on that, or anything,’ I tell him, reaching for my purse.
He stands up after me, grabs for it. ‘Because it’s harder to write a sad song about something real sometimes, than it is to write a happy one about nothing, I know,’ he says as I wrestle with him to keep my purse on my shoulder.
‘No you don’t know,’ I say. He’s blocking my path, stopping me from walking out the door again. I flop against the wall, focus down at my feet. ‘I’m not like you Conor, I don’t have all that… history. Not the good kind, anyway.’
‘What do you mean?’
‘You can write songs about anything you want. Love, for example.’
‘Stephanie…’
‘I’ve never been in love, Conor. Not like you and Grace, anyway.’
His face is inches from mine and I catch the darkness flicker in his brown eyes at my words. ‘That’s my past, Stephanie. Who’ve you been talking to?’

First of all before I give you my review I want to say that this book made me extremely sentimental for a tv show I watched many years ago called Survivor which was cancelled here in the UK but I believe still lives on in other countries throughout the world, it was awesome I loved it and Before He Was Gone just brought it all back to me!

Anyway back to business, its dark, gloomy and I have a streaming cold whilst I write this review and the beautiful sunshiney (if that is indeed a word) cover with it gorgeous tropical setting just makes me want to dive right in!

Now this will be a short review because Before He Was Gone is a gorgeous book which just begs to be read so I will give you my best teaser!

So the story is all about Alyssa and Joshua.....

Alyssa starts off extremely badly, she is dumped by her extremely hot musician boyfriend Sebastien (V hot!) knowing she will be publicly mocked as their relationship is/was all over the gossips mags she applies to Deserted a tv show where the contestants are literally abandoned and left to face challenges, to use their brains to survive whilst being constantly watched by the cameras, of course not all of the contestants are really built for this challenge but they all have their own reasons for being there.

Alyssa meets many new people but the mysterious Joshua stands out, he is not like anyone she has met before, she is attracted to him and the feeling seems to be mutual.

As the show continues, friendships are forged and choices in some cases need to be made, Alyssa and Joshua have amazing chemistry but will they act upon it, and who will be the winner of Deserted?

Becky does a marvellous job of bringing her characters to life, you know as soon as you start reading that this is going to be a great read, her characters are not flat on the page they pop out (in some cases I wish they did!) of the page and you feel yourself immersed in the story.

Awarded 4 out of 5

This review originally written for Rolling with the Moments.

I'm feeling a bit torn about Before He Was Gone... On the one hand, I really loved the engaging writing, the characters, the plot. But on the other, I really don't like that TV show Survivor - which basically is the background and setting for the book. I think what really kept me from hating this book, like that show, is that Wicks doesn't present you with the melodramatic, out of context drama, but the actual events of the happenings and their context. It really shined a light, for me, on just how much the television industry messes with and twists things around for 'good TV', no matter the cost to people's real life.

At this point in time, I as of yet, haven't read the book which this is a companion to - Before He Was Famous. While it is not necessary to have read it in order to read and understand this novel, I feel I would have had a better understanding of Alyssa's and Sebastian's relationship and thereby a greater understand of how their breakup affected her. AND there is always the part where I want to know more about Noah and Chloe after the little snippets I got from Alyssa's story.

I think that it was a really good idea on Wicks part to have this novel written as a switching POV between Alyssa and Joshua, because essentially, Before He Was Gone is two separate stories that eventually and inevitability merge into the one. Alyssa went searching for who she is, and Joshua went looking for a way out of what he is.

Before He Was Gone is a well written and engaging novel with drama, romance, action, and a splash of danger. A book I would recommend to anyone who loves reality TV. ;)
