This magical little novella follows the romance between a costume designing witch and a socially awkward Hollywood hunk, as they make a romantic connection on a top-secret NZ film set and find themselves searching for a magical saboteur, who seems to be hell bent on ruining the film production with accidents and mishaps.
Although fairly short in length, this cozy fantasy romance packed a lot in, featuring two MCs over 40, a bisexual, plus-size heroine, great ensemble characters, subtle magical elements, a cutesy mystery arc, and a gorgeous New Zealand setting to get lost within. All of which added nicely to the very sweet, smile-inducing romance that was at the stories centre.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Bespoke & Bespelled. It's the first story in the new Movie Magic series by NZ author Healy and a must for M/F lovers of cozy fantasy reads.

This novella is just deliciously fun, fast-paced and full of magic that's just as tingly and delightful as the stitch-witchery practised by its practical heroine - who uses her secret powers to help her as as a costume designer/supervisor in TV and film productions. Unfortunately, when she comes back to New Zealand to join the set of a new fantasy film adaptation, she finds herself up against a different kind of magic-worker - one who's determined to make the production fail - and also discombobulated by falling in love with the secretly dorky, inarticulate-but-sweet (and muscled) star of the film. Luckily, Marnie is very, very good at magically sorting things into place...and it's so much fun to watch it all happen!
(Also, I want every single f/sf TV or film production mentioned in this story to become real. Hire Karen Healey to write your scripts, Hollywood! I am HERE as a would-be paying audience for them. ;) )
Highly recommended! I always enjoyed Karen Healey's YA novels, but I enjoyed this adult novella even more, and I can't wait for her next one.

this book is a quick and sweet read. despite being a short book, the mystery was well written and intriguing. i liked the setting and the characters a lot. thank you so much to the publisher for an arc!

Bespoke & Bespelled is one I got through Netgalley a while ago. And when I was looking for a quick paranormal read I got reminded of it and decided this was the perfect time to pick up this witchy paranormal romance book. I had such a fun time reading this one. The main characters are likable and I liked the unique magic types, like the main character Marnie who is a stitch witch.
I liked this book and had a lot of fun reading it. It's a pretty quick read, but I still felt like everything got enough time to develop, although the ending did feel a bit fast. I liked reading about Marnie who is a stitch witch and she quits her stable job at a movie studio to return to New Zealand and help there on a movie adaptation of her favorite fantasy series as customer supervisor. She meets Rider on the plane there, not realizing he is the main star of the this movie. Their attraction is instant and throughout the book they grow closer. Their romance did develop a bit quickly seeing as this is a shorter read, but I thought their connection was clear and I liked reading about them. There are some interesting side characters as well.
My favorite part of this was probably the unique magic. I just loved reading about Marnie's stitch witch magic worked, the way she could communicate with fabric, mend rips without stitches or make a fabric softer or more rain proof. It was just very cool and fun to read about. There are a few more unusual magic types that are revealed later.
I also liked the movie set type plot line and seeing a bit about how that worked. It also made for an unusual backdrop for a book and I liked that. There's also a plot line about some sabotage that's going on and I liked seeing how that got resolved and finding out what happened and why the person acted that way.
To summarize: This was a fun quick witchy paranormal romance read. I enjoyed reading this one and seeing Marnie and Rider fall in love while working together on the set for a new fantasy movie. The romance does progress a bit quickly, but I could feel their connection and liked reading about them. There are some fun side characters as well. I especially liked the unique magic and reading about Marnie's stitch witch magic and how that worked was so fun. The movie set made for an interesting backdrop for the story and the sabotage plot line was interesting and I liked how that got resolved.

Nothing makes me happier than reading a book set in the country I grew up in and not just that, a main character who is also plus size!
This was such a lovely quick read, and the grumpy x sunshine trope was done so well!
Healey really knows how to draw you into her story! I knew it was a novella when I started reading it, but part of me was wishing for more!

This was a very quick, quirky and cute read. Marnie and Rider's chemistry was well written, believable and just so romcom-y. I LOVED it. It quickly grasped my attention and I devoured this. It made me laugh out loud several times and I felt like kicking my feet and giggling at majority of this lol.

Such a super cute novella. This read has just the right amount of romance and cozy mystery vibes. Set in New Zealand on the site of a movie production that is going massively wrong. Marnie is a stitch witch and in between falling for Rider, she’s trying to figure out what is causing all the bad luck on set.
This book took me about an hour to finish. A fast read and now I can’t wait to read the other books in the series coming soon!

I liked the witchy vibes and I loved the New Zealand setting bc I don't think I've ever read a book set there before. I liked the mystery aspect of the book, working out what was ruining a movie shoot but the romance fell completely flat for me. it felt like they met and then they were instantly into each other and dating? felt very random and rushed like it came out of nowhere. Overall just completely mediocre

Bespoke and Bespelled is a dual point of view starring beautiful, stitch witch Marnie, and absolute disaster but loveable actor Rider.
I loved this book. I read this is one sitting. I found the humor, laugh out loud, and I loved the point of view of Marnie who is an older protagonist— not something I see often in these ‘meet-cute’ stories. I also loved how sure she was. She is a confident, well developed character, and there were mentions of her positive image that she has of herself, which made me love her even more for being a person who loves herself first.
This book is the epitome of cozy, things are pretty low stakes and that’s what I love about it, fun. sassy, and delightful Marnie as a character is someone we can all relate to and you can’t help but root for her from the sidelines.
I really enjoyed the authors portrayal of magic. It was very easy to understand, and I enjoyed the witchy element, especially since it wasn’t necessarily the focus of the whole story, but it helped major plot points develop. This was a cute and quirky read! It was super quick and perfect for when you want a little escape on these dark winter nights. I loved both of our leads and I loved how magic was used in this universe- instead of having big sweeping powers witches are specialties. I really enjoyed the little mystery going on and the chemistry between Marnie and Rider and the setting of a film set. It was a nice change from the cozy small towns most witchy romcoms take place in.

This book was pretty decent tbh. The moment I saw the cover on NetGalley I grabbed it and I read it in one sitting. The writing was consistently great, effortlessly drawing me into its narrative. Marnie was absolutely amazing and I love how secure she was. Rider was the cutest and the fact that he didn't even hesitate when Marnie told him that she was a witch made him the perfect guy for her. This proved to be a delightful and cozy read.

Bespoke & Bespelled was a delightful, quick read. Marnie is a stitch-witch costume designer, Rider is a fantasy movie star who doesn't know magic exists. They both have sweet personalities and are actually mature in their communication with each other. It was such a treat to hear them admit their attraction and decide to go out without 100+ pages of agonizing back-and-forth that many romances serve up. I also loved that Marnie's fatness was apparent and her body appreciated by Rider, without her body being a plot point in itself. Thank you to Karen Healey for the type of representation and appreciation I've been looking for!
There was a decent explanation of the magic system, which was easy enough to understand that I felt immediately immersed. This book was a nice break from some fantasy books that are complex from the outset.
The reason I couldn't give Bespoke & Bespelled a full five stars is that the moment the culprit was discovered, the book jumped ahead two years, there was a brief epilogue-style chapter, and the book ended. I would really have loved to see the resolution take place, rather than just hear brief dialogue about it. It would also have been nice to see more of Marnie and Rider's early relationship. Even another 30 pages would have left me much more satisfied after having truly enjoyed the story until that point.
Despite my taking off a star for the reasons above, I will be recommending this book to my book groups and friends. I'm also looking forward to reading the sequel and Karen Healey's other work.

Super short story about a witchy costume designer and a Hollywood heartthrob. While this was a quick read the plot was fitting for the length of the story. Meaning it wasn't overly complicated and had the right amount of fluff and conflict for it not to feel incomplete. I enjoyed our main characters but it was hard to visualize them because there wasn't a clear description. I would have liked this one to be a lot longer but it was good for what you get.

This paranormal romance novella was sweet and short. It has a sewing machine on the cover, which makes it almost unique in indie book publishing. The heroine is a costume maker in TV and film. And she has fabric magic. Not a bad combination, really. Especially, when paired with a gorgeous male film star on a set where everything goes wrong. The heroine suspects sabotage magic. But while she is looking for a villain, she works hard to fix everything she can, both with her magic and her needle.
I liked the story and the characters. I liked the unique magic system. I liked the romantic line, and the age of the heroine - slightly over 40. I liked how the author built tension. The only thing that disappointed me in this quaint tale was its ending. It seemed ... toothless. But overall, charming.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Bespoke and Bespelled on NetGalley from Karen Healey and 8th Note Press, and I am SO thankful because it was amazing. It featured some of the following:

This was such a charming read to start off the new year! Marnie is a “stitch witch” (a witch whose magic is related to the creating and repair of clothing) whose job working on a popular TV show has just ended. She gets the opportunity to work on the biggest movie of the year, and finds that 1. She has instant chemistry with the movie’s leading man, Rider, and 2. The production has most certainly been cursed. She teams up with Rider to help save the movie and find the magical saboteur… and of course they fall in love.
This story is fairly short but the pacing of the plot and relationship is perfect- I never felt like it was moving too fast or too slow. My ONE criticism is actually a compliment… I loved the side characters so much that I wished we had more scenes with them! It’s hard to make side characters feel real, and for the relationships to feel authentic when their time in the story is limited, but that was definitely present here.
Also! The relationship between Marnie and Rider was so refreshing. They COMMUNICATED! Like adults! Having a middle-aged main chapter who is secure in herself, her talents, and is able to articulate that was just so lovely. I also loved that the story’s conflict was driven by something that wasn’t just a miscommunication between characters that could have been resolved if they had a normal conversation.
I loved this, and hope that there are more stories set in this world someday!

This was a fun read for me! It's been a hot minute since I read a cozy mystery. I needed a good palette cleanser so to speak, and this was perfect.
Marnie amused me from the very beginning. I loved her determination to be the best in her job. While using that touch of magic she was gifted with to make sure that her work was exceptional when needed. Her touches of humor, creative mind, and gentle but firm nature made her more endearing to me. When things pick up on the set she's on and she's trying to figure out what's going on, I found myself following along with her and Rider, questioning things myself.
Rider was an interesting character. He for sure was a guy that was torn up by what his needs were compared to what his obligations were. I don't blame him for wanting to just have that time out. When he bumps into Marnie in the way he did the misspoken moments and rudeness make him more relatable and not untouchable like so many celebrity characters are represented. Instead, you get a glimpse of the guy beyond the persona. I love the way he fell into his attraction with Marnie instead of fighting it. It felt sweet and smooth. He was the great sleuth and addition to the whole good cop/bad cop they had going on.
Overall it was a fun read! I didn't suspect the culprit to be honest. I was looking at a few other people. I enjoyed the twist on the paranormal that I'm used to. It was fun and different. Kudos to the author too for the representation and inclusion in this book!

What a wonderful popcorn read!
I loved every moment of this book! The characters were utterly enjoyable (even the "bad guy"). The New Zealand setting was amazing too. I loved the references to real pop culture thrown into the mix, but I especially loved the fake pop culture thrown in.
I want to read Queen's Horde, which is the book series being adapted into a movie. I also want to read whatever this is: "They were currently working on a murder mystery set on a space station where everyone acted like a Regency-era member of the ton while shooting each other in the back with laser pistols."
The book (Bespoke & Bespelled) does focus on a stitch-witch who works in costuming for Hollywood. She's hit a bit of a midlife crisis and yearns to move up - and lo! A movie adaptation of her favorite book series appears. Unfortunately, it's riddled with unfortunate situations, one after the other. And it's up to Marnie to figure out what's going on.
It's such a wonderful concept that wastes no time in moving the mystery along! Even though it's under 200 pages, the book somehow packs in the mystery and a great romance without missing a beat. I'm so curious how the series of Movie Magic will unfold. I feel like this will be a companion series. If so, bring it on! I want to know all about this magical world that's mixed within our own.
...But seriously though... Can somebody please write The Queen's Horde?

A really excellent cozy - excellent enough that I read it straight through, and I usually dislike cozies. It's not set at a con but it's about a sf/f fan working on costume designs for an sf/f movie, which is pretty close.
Basically, I loved this, but my only complaint was the "danger" wasn't very dangery or dark. Which...is kind of the point of the cozy. So this is purely a reader compatibility issue.
This author has previously written ya sf/f and epic fantasy, featuring gods, spirits, saving populations from a disaster event, gender identity, suicide, dystopia, prejudice, war, treachery, killing, and death of a parent. So if you want darker, see her other books (ex. The Shattering and The Empress of Timbra)! If you want in between, see her excellent romance series beginning with Persephone in Bloom.

When I learned that Karen Healey, who wrote some YA urban fantasy novels set in New Zealand that I read in high school had branched out to doing adult rom-coms about the behind-the-scenes drama on movie sets, aka one of my FAVORITE highly specific romance novel genres, I immediately went to get my hands on one. And I'm very pleased that I did because this was a ton of fun! I loved all of the details about costume design and the various mishaps plaguing the set of a big-budget fantasy novel, and the main characters had excellent chemistry–they get off on the wrong foot, but immediately resolve matters, and I just really enjoyed reading about the two of them bantering and trying to get to the bottom of a mystery together. Also, kind of refreshing to read a romance where both of the main characters are in their forties and happily settled in their respective careers. I think the end wrapped things up a little too quickly considering all of the problems they had left to solve (some of the script changes for the movie…oof. If it was MY favorite book series getting butchered like that, Hollywood would never hear the end) but I nevertheless had an excellent time and I'm happy to be back to reading this author.

She gets the role of a lifetime when she's asked to work on the film adaptation of her favorite book. But when supernatural forces make jackets rip, tents lift off the ground, and tires pop, Marnie takes it upon herself to find the culprit. She also didn't expect to have an undeniable draw towards the movie's male lead.
Rider was initially excited for a leading role in a high-budget movie, but instead found himself on the set of a film with a horrible script and disaster after disaster ocurring around him. At least he has the beautiful costume supervisor to look at everyday, if only he could stop acting like such a fool around her.

Basically the story is about Marnie on the film set, dealing with a) her attracting to the leading man, and b) weird occurrences that have plagued the filming since it started in NZ, and which begin to seem like they're not random or natural.
Coming to Healey off the back of the Olympus Inc books, this is exactly what I was hoping for. Cosy, comfortable, fast-paced: I read it in one evening and I have no regrets.

This was such a super cute novella! It's super fast and magical and everything I could ask for in a witchy book because the vibes were off the charts. The FMC Marnie uses her powers as a Stitch-witch to make costumes for movies and shows. She gets an offer for one of her favourite fantasy books and when she arrives on set she realizes something magical is happening that's causing everything to go wrong. She also meets the lead Rider and they both have this sort of instant attraction.
I loved both main characters, Marnie was confident in herself and Rider reminded me of myself with his social awkwardness towards her. I love how their romance blossoms and how quickly Marnie felt comfortable enough to include Rider in on her magic. Another thing I appreciated with this book was how I couldn’t figure out who was causing the other magic, I wasn’t expecting that! I’m super excited to read the next book about Kingston.

Marnie and Rider's relationship was cute, but I wanted more. I enjoyed the magical elements and the 'cozy mystery' aspect of the story. I also loved that Marnie is a plus-sized, older FMC. I didn't love this story and could not get into it. I do think it was well-written and easy to read, but overall it fell flat for me.
