Saw the cover of this book and immediately grabbed it off the library shelf. I assumed, and this is completely my bad, that it was about one of the OG creators of classic kaiju monsters. Something celebrating the costume designers, makeup artists, and special effects people who brought us those classic 60's films. But, no. This is basically the fawning corporate biography of a guy who owns a toy company that sells their own 'homages' to classic kaiju creations. It's a brief skim through his life that closes with a few "Here's some of the stuff you can buy from us!" catalog pages. It feels like something you would buy at the gift shop after the factory tour. All in all, a disappointment. I would love to see a children's picture book about those real kaiju creators.
When 9yo Mark received a box of Japanese monster toys from his relatives in Japan, his perception of action figures changed. He watched Ultraman with friends on TV and drew lots and lots of pictures. As an adult, he made his own job, and started a toy company with his own original action figures. For kids who are collectors or who love action figures, particularly those familiar with kaiju, this is a great introduction to the creator. I hope the Japanese American National Museum has copies of this book on hand. Includes a nice author's note. Mark is Japanese American.
What a super fun biography of an artist and toy maker!! Young readers will love following Mark Nagata's journey, and of course be inspired to make monsters and toys of their own! This seems like a perfect book for classroom and club activities. Highly recommend!
