Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
This volume sees the rebirth of Majin Boo, but not before a chunk of character development for Vegeta, who allows himself to be "corrupted" by Babidi to make use of the power boost Spopovich and Yamu received. Vegeta is now able to go Super Saiyan 2, and only needed to kill a couple hundred Budokai spectators to do it! The plan was to become "evil" again so Son Goku will be forced to fight seriously, but Goku ends up being more concerned about Boo, so the fight is postponed. Majin Vegeta tries to take matters into his own hands by killing Boo (possibly out of regret for what he's just done), but he fails, Boo revives himself, then heals Babidi (whom Piccolo "killed" earlier), and the two set about destroying the cities of the world, out of revenge against Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks.
This volume is mostly cool because of the battle between SS2 Goku and SS2 Majin Vegeta, but it's also important to see more development for Vegeta. In the future (GT and Super), Vegeta will end up being a far better husband and father than Goku, who just wants to wakuwaku all day. Vegeta goes on a bit of a rampage, but then he has a somewhat heartwarming goodbye with his son before the classic Dragon Ball trope of "killing yourself to stop a bad guy who isn't actually inconvenienced by your sacrifice," an event that happens all to frequently, but it pretty much always nice to see anyway (well, maybe Goku teleporting Fat Cell was a bit pointless...).
Vegeta fans should enjoy this volume's contents, as it's basically the last time Vegeta gets to do anything cool on his own for over twenty years (he's just fusion material for Vegetto and Gogeta for the next while, then Fukkatsu no 'F' undoes his big moments, then he keeps playing second-fiddle to Goku in Super until SSB Evolved and his new Hakai-based form move him away from Goku's style). Power-level wankers should be excited for SS3 and Fusion soon!

*"Satan Miracle Special Ultra Super Megaton Punch!!" *Goten: "That sounds interesting!" & Trunks: "You're right!," so the little kids fly in the direction of Babidi's spaceship where they'll risk getting killed (and do end up drawing Babidi's ire), making them both closer to Kid Goku than Kid Gohan *I remember having a CCG card of Super Saiyan Son Gohan catching Dabra's sword with his hands. Relevant to me because I don't remember ever actually watching the episodes when Dabra was alive. *Dabra fucks off when he realizes it would be way easier to just have his boss possess Vegeta's edgelord ass *Bejita is forced into Super Saiyan by Babidi's evil magic mind-jacking power, suggesting either that the SS form is tied to Vegeta's "evil," or otherwise that his body has a self-defense mechanism whereby it activates SS to protect itself (similar to how the Super manga would stupidly have Son Goku get knocked out of SSG into SS3, which I likewise attempted to justify as Goku reflexively turning SS3 when his God Ki dissipates) *Babidi: "This is great! He's already under our control. I'll release his hidden powers and allow him to overcome his limits!" Walking right into Vegeta's plan.... **Majin Vegeta: "Shut up! My only target is Kakarrot! I don't care about the rest." **Son Goku: "Vegeta, did you... let yourself get possessed on purpose?" *I also remember a CCG card of Majin Vegeta shooting a blast to his right side, hitting the people in the stands. I had a lot of fuckin' Babidi Saga cards.... *Bejita: "'Stupid'?! You think this is a stupid reason? This is everything to me! I don't care about this Majin Boo!" My dude, there are better ways to become SS2! Just let yourself die, and train in the afterlife! Or become friends with a robot two minutes before he's killed by another robot! Uh... wait... maybe Vegeta's plan isn't too zany...? *Goku seemingly willing to kill Kaioshin to get him out of the way of the fight between trve Saiyans *Kaioshin: "If the shock awakens Boo, there's nothing we could have done to prevent it at this point. It's better we do it this way, instead of waiting for him to reach full power." Too bad this way allows him to reach full power! *Vegeta has some SS2 sparks around his body when rebelling against Babidi's power, drawing him closer to achieving the new form *Goku, to Gohan, about his anger power: "If you do that again, no one can beat you. No one!" Unfortunately for Gohan, SS3, Super Vegetto, and the Super Genki-Dama are all more useful than an angry Gohan.... *SS2 Goku has a notable hair-style change, with more of his bangs being slicked back through ki-based hair-gel(!?) *SS2 Vegeta... might have more detailed lines in his hair(?). It's hard to tell how different his hair-style is between SS1 and 2, so it's easier to just use the electricity as visual cue to signify SS2.... *Chapter 458 ends with Goku and Vegeta's dueling smirk-nods, like that funny .gif from some video game *Bejita: "I wanted to be the way that I used to be! A cruel and a cold-blood Saiyan! I wanted to fight you without holding back, and without having to worry about anything else! Your influence softened my heart. I even started a family, and began living a normal earthling life! I needed to find my past self, even if it required the help of someone like Babidi... And now, I feel so much better." *Boo is a smiling, chubby genie *GODgeta 2-0 against JOBku *Babidi: "Ha! Ha! Good for you, Kaioshin! Are you resting now? That's not very good posture for the ruler of the universe!!" *Kaioshin's glare blast thing is neat **Boo stealing the attack is neat also *Trunks accidentally breaking the petrified Piccolo is funny, especially since Piccolo has to train the kids later *Bejita: "I'm sorry, Gohan. This is my fault." Between this and Vegeta aiding against Cell, seems like he's actually pretty nice to Gohan. Maybe because he's afraid to get his ass beat by a giant monkey again...? *Dabra turned into a giant cookie *Majin Vegeta's Atomic Blast *Fat Boo's Angry Explosion *Boo taking a chunk of fat, stretching it like taffy, and using it as rope to bind Vegeta so he can't dodge the ass-slam attack *Goten and Kid Trunks bursting with anger and beating Boo a bit *Piccolo cutting Babidi in half *Vegeta: "Trunks... take good care of your mother." *Chapter 467 using the original Saiyan armor with long pauldrons for Vegeta's send-off... even though that's his costume from when he was clearly evil *Vegeta: "Trunks, I've never hugged you before, have I?... Take care of yourself, Trunks." *Vegeta wanting to face Goku in battle in the afterlife *Piccolo: "For the first time in his life, Vegeta is fighting for someone other than himself. He plans to sacrifice himself." *Vegeta: "Goodbye, Bulma, Trunks, and yes... even you, Kakarrot." **Final Explosion ***Boo's tongue flapping back from the force of the blast (which also partially disintegrates his antenna) *Bulma seemingly sensing Vegeta's death *Vegeta turning to a person-sized dust-bunny *the mini-Boos *Boo's healing power, which will be important later on as well *Piccolo: "They're our last hope...!! As small as it is." Because... Gotenks is short? :^) *Kuririn: "Goku! It's Goku! He's alive!!" Except, you know, that halo on his head. Remember? *Goku: "That's not what I meant. I was talking about Fusion..." **Funimation always referred to the planet as "Metamoru," which was just enough that I just now realized it's named after "metamorphosis." That damned "U" throwing me off! *Popo has the idea to fuse the kids, showing that he's still useful beyond making me laugh at his face *"Kai-kai!!" *Bulma crying for Vegeta, even after he killed a couple hundred people not too long ago. In fairness, they were all revived from the Dragon Balls. *Boo levitating city folk, turning them into Skittles, and SUCCing them up

Including "absurd" tag because of Boo's wacky gag-manga skillset. Including "manhood" and "selfhood" tags because of Vegeta's fast-paced character-development.
Fuck Budokai 2 for making it hard to transform into Majin Vegeta if you're decent at playing the game!
