Lucinda and Andrew Douglass are settling into life with their newborn baby, Delilah. Only four weeks in, much to Andrew’s dismay, Lucinda is planning her return to a high-powered job at the New York Stock Exchange, causing a major rift in their already volatile marriage.
On the bright side, Lucinda has found the perfect nanny to care for their precious baby.
Okay, so Bree Miller shows up for work two weeks early and is a little too friendly with Andrew. But on her very first day on the job, she literally saves Delilah from an attempted abduction at Central Park.
She's almost too good to be true.
Maybe it’s just a coincidence that threatening pictures are showing up anonymously at Lucinda’s apartment and a friend is poisoned at her intimate dinner party…
Or maybe not.
Is Bree really the perfect nanny? Or is she actually Lucinda’s worst nightmare?
One month ago, Lucinda Douglass, a high flying stock broker, gave birth to an adorable daughter named Delilah. Initially planning to stay home and raise her, Lucinda’s husband, Andrew, is sure to be none to happy to hear that she’s had a change of heart. Just the same, she misses the hustle and bustle of the trading floor and they can’t exactly maintain their lifestyle on Andrew’s non-existent artist salary.
When Lucinda broaches the topic, however, Andrew is less than thrilled with her decision just as she expected. After all, the last thing he wants to do is become a stay-at-home-dad. Adding fuel to the fire of their already shaky marriage, she offers an olive branch in the form of a new live-in nanny. Granted, she hasn’t found one just yet, but surely the perfect one is out there just waiting to be hired.
At the first round of interviews, the candidates seem to go from bad to worse. Until, that is, Bree Miller enters the room. Young and with a deep love for children, it’s seems Lucinda has found just the nanny to care for her baby girl. Not five hours later, however, she’s alarmed to find Bree on her doorstep with suitcases in hand. Even more concerning is how friendly the attractive young woman becomes with Andrew in no time at all. Should Lucinda reconsider her quick hire?
Within twenty-four hours, however, all doubts are quenched when Bree literally stops a wannabe abductor of Delilah in his tracks. So why does Lucinda still have a bad feeling? One that only gets worse when anonymous threatening photos show up and a near fatal “accident” occurs at a dinner party. Could Bree be behind these sinister acts? And if so, what does she want?
Wow. A gripping and twisted tale, The Perfect Nanny took me on quite the ride. From the dual POVs and timelines to the dynamite characters, my attention never wavered from the page. The first book by Fisher that I’ve read, I can now guarantee that it won’t be my last. After all, the mind-boggling twists had me on the edge of my seat as the growing suspense kept my fingers flying through the pages. Quite frankly, this is one story I won’t forget anytime soon.
As for the characters, while not exactly fully fleshed out, they were absolutely captivating nonethelesspersonas that ranged the gamut from sweetly naïve to wickedly manipulative, they acted out the classic mix of behaviors necessary for the best kind of domestic suspense novel. Page after page, I had no idea who to trust and believe me, that was nothing but pure bliss.
Then there was the plot. While much of the book was a slow burn that required some patience on my part, once I reached the adrenaline-pumping climaxdecidedly over-the-top? Well, yes—but it fit into the rest of the storyline just right. As for those aforementioned twists (including one doozy in the very last sentence), let me just say that I couldn’t, for the life of me, guess even a single one—regardless of how hard I tried.
I do have to mention that the language did seem a bit stilted at times, with the dialogue not exactly true-to-life. At the same time, it was easy to overlook and didn’t detract from the plot even the tiniest bit. The one flaw that did bug me, however, was how far I had to suspend my disbelief to buy this plot. Granted, once I did, it was a joy to behold, but still, it was a bit much to swallow at first.
All in all, between the two timelines—including one that had a mysterious narrator—and the red herrings aplenty, I was left happily in the dark throughout this quick, easy read. Add in the short chapters and growing unease and this was a hole in one for this new-to-me author. All I know is, if you haven’t happened upon D.L. Fisher before, she’s not one to be missed, so grab a copy of The Perfect Nanny as soon as it comes out on December 5th. Or, if you can’t wait that long, try her debut novel Win, Lose, or Die, which is one I’m now planning to add to my own TBR. Rating of 4 stars.
Thank you to D.L. Fisher for my complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
PUB DATE: December 5, 2023
Trigger warning: attempted child abduction, gaslighting, anaphylactic allergic reaction, child abuse, getting drugged, mention of: infidelity, mother’s death due to problem pregnancy, bullying
Not very imaginative and I lost respect when she left her phone in the cab, but then texted her friend a few minutes later. This story needs a lot if work.
3.5 ⭐️ | This story took me on a wild ride, mainly because the FMC infuriated me with her nonstop poor decision-making. I trusted absolutely no one in this book, which actually added to the suspense and kept me on edge the entire time. The “years before” POV was a great touch and brought an extra layer of mystery that I really enjoyed.
I listened to the audiobook, and the narration was solid, bringing the tension and shifting perspectives to life. Lucinda definitely let Bre get away with far too much for far too long & I lost count of how many times I yelled at her.
Overall, a twisty, unsettling story with that I enjoyed & kept me intrigued!
Ah yes another thriller. The book starts off fast-paced, which I loved. I was strapped in, ready for some mind-twisting suspense. And then... it tripped over its own plot threads.
We get mysterious flashbacks to “many years ago.” Many years? How many, D.L.? Five? Fifty? The dinosaurs still around? Give us a timeline before my neurons start plotting their own mystery novel.
And sure, the ending tied some things together, like using duct tape on a sinking boat. There were loopholes, but hey, who needs answers when you have vibes? We’re left wondering what exactly happened to that girl at the school, but apparently, the author decided we didn’t need closure. It’s all fine, though, because, plot twist, it was all hallucinations!
Ah, the classic “it was all in her head” move. Because nothing screams “thriller payoff” like realizing four chapters of backstory were just a fever dream. I mean, if I wanted to hallucinate confusion, I’d just reread my old PhD notes.
Still, it’s a quick read. Great for when you want to feel simultaneously intrigued and betrayed in under 300 pages. I’d recommend it if you like thrillers, but maybe lower your expectations a few floors before entering.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, it was an easy read and I was devouring it……. But then without any build up or suspense BAM there was the twist and then the book just ended 😂 very middle of the road unfortunately which is such a shame!
This book exceeded my expectations from beginning to end. I had no idea who to trust, who was the bad guy, who was the good guy, was Lucinda going crazy with mom hormones. Was there a mid life crisis and cheating scandal… then you add in the previous life. Holy moly. This is one of those books where it is hard to give a review without saying anything to give away because you need to hold on for every page. Everyone is so intertwined and it will NOT unravel until DL Fisher is ready for it to. When you think it is over… the last sentence… well damn it… Trust me. This is a must read.
I’m not leaving a star rating but I’m writing this note to the author, and other authors who may see it. I listened to this one from Audible narrated with Virtual Voice. Because of the TERRIBLE narration, lack of emotive nuance in the reading, mispronunciation of words….the whole thing was awful. Authors, don’t let your books be read by computers. It’s too difficult to figure out if the material was poorly written, or if the narration killed the story. But, sadly, I’ll be less inclined to choose this author in the future because of this negative experience.
If I’d have known this was Freida McFadden’s “The Surrogate”, aka the worst book I’ve probably ever read, I’d have never bought this. What an annoying and aggravating book. I will say this was a tiny bit better than FM version but holy hell, do authors really think we’ll believe this nonsense? That there are actual highly educated women who turn completely brain dead the minute they’re home, in their domestic environment? It’s truly offensive and I hate that word.
INSANELY GOOD! It kept me guessing up to the very last chapter. My speculations are usually right, but this didn't allow me to succeed this time.
I resonated with Lucinda's paranoia. Just enough not to leave my door unlocked as if inviting a serial killer to murder me. The back and forth chapters were not excessive.
It was a fast-paced read but didn't end abruptly. It ended with closure...so I thought 🤔
This was a fast paced audible original that I listened to in one afternoon today. I saw part of the twist coming from a mile away but still enjoyed it. I always love unreliable narrators and characters. It kept me on my toes wondering if I would be correct or not.
I wanted to like it, but was very annoyed by the main character. Has the author ever had a baby? It was very unrealistic how she was behaving and just leaving the baby with strangers. Also, a major writing inconsistency when she leaves her cell in the cab, but then texts on it moments later. Also, she said she left her water at the police station, yet when she got home she took it out of the fridge. I don’t think the ending was that surprising or a twist. I suspected it was the best friend.

This book made me feel crazy! It kept me guessing the entire way through. Fun to listen. Wild story.
3 ⭐️ Why? Great question. I was annoyed with the main character. She was acting goofy!! If I ever invite a woman (nanny) to LIVE with me, my husband, and newborn, an hour after meeting me…call someone. Sound the alarms. Raise the flags. This is a typical trope for books of this genre: a mix of an unreliable narrator and a damsel in distress…one who creates her own distress by staying in the house for a glass of wine, despite the bloodstain on the carpet and the missing kitchen knife.
Some issues with the writing. For example, the main character leaves her phone in the car, goes inside, and texts someone 🧐
Parts of the story kept my attention. However, the development of what takes place moved very quickly. Too quickly. I found the ending to be lacking the desired result for the overall storyline.
I knew how this book would end fairly early, there were so many inconstancies. At one point she states she leaves her phone in the cab for collateral (no money), goes into an apartment, talks about how she has left her phone.. a few paragraphs later she texts a friend. Like?? Who proofed this??
OMG! What did I just read? I devoured this book in a sitting, thanks to receiving an ARC from the author. I loved her first book, and this sophomore novel did not disappoint. Once again, she'll mess with what you think you know down to the very last line. I can't wait for this to be released in January so I can get the paperback version!!
This book reminded me of the Lifetime movies I used to watch with my grandmother and I mean that in the best way possible. It kept me guessing the whole time. Was Lucy losing her mind? Was Bree really trying to come between Lucy and Andrew? Or was Andrew the one pulling the strings? I really enjoyed this one; it kept me hooked from start to finish, and I definitely didn’t see that twist coming.
This was terrible! The main character is painfully dumb. The way these people talk and live is not normal or even believable. The main character lives in NY, is loaded, has a bum husband, and hires a nannny off of Facebook. Also happens to be friends with a famous rich influencer. The whole thing is preposterous and there were moments where I wanted to strangle the main character myself for her being so dumb and annoying. Also the husband is a total POS dumb story and dumb characters, two thumbs down.
