Taoism for Inner Peace: Ancient Philosophy for Everyday Life

Rate this book
Taoists focus on living a simple and balanced life. The ancient Taoist sages rejected societal rules that forced people to live in ways they saw as unnatural. Contrary to the majority, they didn’t see the appeal of chasing wealth and status, and cared little for other people’s opinions. Rather than becoming kings, they chose to fish in quiet mountain streams, away from the masses.

Ancient Taoist texts offer a wealth of invaluable wisdom, such as ‘wu wei’ (effortless action), the power of softness, and acceptance. Many of the ideas in these texts are so radically different from Western thought that once we understand them, we may see the world in a completely different light.

Einzelgänger studied the ancient Taoist texts, and has been creating a (growing) collection of reflections on applying Taoist wisdom in everyday life. He aimed to make Taoist philosophy accessible while preserving its depth. Most of these reflections have been published on YouTube in video format. Due to their popularity, Einzelgänger revised and compiled these essays into this book.

In an age of rampant consumerism, obsession with achievement, and global tensions, the pursuit of simplicity and tranquility is more relevant than ever. Taoist philosophy can help us worry less, go with the flow, achieve without effort, and find the positive in the darkest places.

Like his YouTube essays, these present a clear, entertaining distillation of Taoist philosophy. Great for folks just starting out and filled with fresh insight for those who believe they’ve heard it all before.

Having read all the previous books, this one got a bit repetitive in comparison to the rest. Chuang Tzu's Tree is mentioned and used as an example several times, so are many other stories.
