"Independent Study" is a 2013 short story by Andrew C. Piazza. It is available for purchase on its own, and is also included in Piazza's short story collection "Strange Days." The story is about 30 pages long, depending on your ebook device settings.

The short story introduces us to a nameless graduate student who enjoys snooping around places he shouldn't, and collecting stories that are not supposed to see the light of day. After encountering some suspicious behavior in his university's library, the graduate student is pulled into some snooping the likes of which he has never seen before, and discovers something that could potentially spell doom for the world as we know it.

If you enjoy science fiction horror, or stories written in the style of H.P. Lovecraft, then "Independent Study" is sure to please. Piazza begins the story by arousing simple curiosity, but within the span of 30 pages quickly brings you to a place of abject terror. The story is told in the first person, and it is interesting to hear the thoughts of the protagonist as his snooping experience becomes creepier and creepier. There is an interesting combination of science and the occult, and if you have read anything else by Piazza, this will seem familiar. Whether you have read much else by the author or not, this is a fantastic little story, and a great place to start if you are looking for a small but potent look into the mind of the fantastic Andrew Piazza.

I received this short story through a very generous offer he made on Facebook. He sent this title, along with a couple others, for free. This being said, Piazza sent some fantastic short stories! He does not disappoint! This was such a fun and well put together short. Part of it reminded me of Stranger Things in a way and a mix of Re-Animator/From Beyond. I highly recommend this title.

Ok

It was ok, I'm finding that the short horror story or novella isn't very scary or exciting for me. Might have two give them up.
