Two years ago, I read the first book in this tremendous trilogy and I noted: “We have barely scratched the surface when it comes to the history of the Artezans and most of what we are told here has been twisted through different strands of folklore. I’m looking forward to learning more about how the past is influencing the present in the subsequent books.” It’s safe to say Lapinski has done a sterling job subsequently of knitting everything together as expertly as Nyx might.
I’m very conscious of book 2 spoilers when talking about this one; so, I’ll just say that Elodie and Ed spend much of this book apart and everything seems impossible. Their only hope is finding the last Spellbreaker, but powerful forces have it in their interests to stop them.
Also, Mr Biscuits goes on a quest & becomes the hero he was destined to be.
There’s loads of positive messaging. Particularly strong is the idea of being your authentic self and allowing others to do the same. If you don’t you might become bitter, twisted and alienated from reality. (No idea where LD got that idea from.)
I’m sad to finish, but I’ve really loved this series. I’ll post my previous reviews in stories for anyone who hasn’t started this journey yet.
Did I read this book pretty much in two sittings because I couldn’t put it down? Maybe. Okay yes, I did.
It hits the ground running and you’re immediately drawn into a high stakes adventure! After the events of the last book, our trio of characters have their challenges to face and a race against time to find the Last Spellbreaker. With foes on their heels, a journey to embark upon and the small matter of the fate of magic in their hands- they have a lot to navigate.
When each character has your heart like this, you feel so invested and can’t help but scream for delight and frustration for them all! It definitely felt like the final boss battle was looming in this and it was the cultivation of the past few books all heading to this finale. It was so gripping and I honestly had no trouble eating this book whole.
What a truly wonderful series it’s been, from a fantastic author who not only writes engaging stories so well, but in a way to delight and inspire in such an inclusive way. I really enjoyed!
Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.
The Last Spellbreaker sees Elodie, Ed and Laurie thrown in different directions as they come into their birthright as two of the three Artezan Masters. Ed's brush with death leaves him far away from his twin, who has issues of her own to deal with in the search for the Last Spellbreaker; a near-mythical Artezan who they believe holds the key to restoring their parents' memories and saving the Artezan world.
LD Lapinski has done it again, a fast-paced,beautifully written with realistic characters and fantastic representation. The Artezans trilogy deserves its place, along with the Strangeworlds series, among the best of middle-grade literature being written today.
