Alex is a Canadian artist, musician, and YA author of DEAD GIRLS DON’T SAY SORRY from Knopf BFYR and I WISH YOU WOULDN’T. When they’re not at the keyboard, you can find them hosting tabletop game night, working on illustrations, or at their other keyboard composing music.
Alex’s love of art, music, and the western Canadian landscape regularly spills into their writing, which tends to feature complex friendships, twisty romances, and explorations of queerness. They live in Calgary with their roommate, cat, and dice collection.
I found a digital copy of DEAD GIRLS DON'T SAY SORRY by Alex Ritany on Libby. All views are mine.
I felt uncomfortable with this book almost from the outset, which is the point the audience learns that one of the two fmcs, Julia, is already dead. Ritany does finally provide an explanation of Julia's death at the end of this four hundred page book, but her death has nothing to do with the plot. It barely registers in the narrative. Both are pretty much devoted to Nora's confiding through first-person POV about how terrible her friend Julia is.
At first, it's not even that clear what Nora's on about. The abusive exchanges don't seem that serious. Over the course of the book, the author escalates the abuse Nora experiences at the hands of Julia, but the development doesn't make much sense. For one thing, the abuse dynamic wouldn't play out in this way in an established relationship. Escalation is for new relationships. I shouldn't have spent the first two hundred pages wondering which of these girls needs intervention.
Also, if Julia has untreated NPD or BPD and it's affecting her and other characters' lives, she should probably at least get realistic representation. That's the author's responsibility, to prevent growing stigma attached to mental illness– not bait the audience into wanting the mentally ill character dead. Ritany reveals in her afterword that Julia is based on a past real-life friendship of the author's. Not research, which I recommend when writers are trying to manage characters with complex mental illness.
Was this one of those times a writer decided to work out revenge in their fiction? Julia's death doesn't even serve the plot. Also, this should go without saying, but here I am: mentally ill people (and characters) don't deserve to die because they're (in)convenient, difficult, or even hurtful.
Reading Notes:
Three (or more) things I loved:
1. With the exception of the constant trios of descriptor—Impulsive, charismatic, head-turning Julia p1— this is beautiful writing. Smooth and sticky, draws you right in, like warm caramel.
2. I like Julia and Nora, the fmc's dynamic. It's a little mean and untrustworthy, just the right believable amount. It both reminds me of my teenage girl friendships and makes for great story tension.
3. I often complain about alternating timelines because this technique is rarely done well, especially when combined with alternating POV. When done poorly, alternating timeline/POV creates serious clarity problems and a pile of work for the reader in the form of backtracking and rereading. In DEAD GIRLS, Ritany elegantly utilizes the alternating timeline. It was always clear whether the reader was in one timeline or the other because in one, a character was alive, and in the other, she was dead. More than time separates the two perspectives, but an entire book's worth of differences. Loved enjoying this element!
Three (or less) things I didn't love:
This section isn't only for criticisms. It's merely for items that I felt something for other than "love" or some interpretation thereof.
1. This is a pretty slow-moving plot, but it reads like a slow burn because of all the character tension.
2. I'm not a fan of how Ritany presents her central theme, toxic relationships. The first person narrator sum FMC Nora tells the reader about many abuses Julia perpetrates on all her friends. Especially Nora. But the behaviors the reader gets to actually witness from Julia are frustratingly vague. I was starting to feel my heart sink. “Are you happy for me?” “Should I be? Are you happy?” ...“Yeah. I’m really happy.” I heard running water on the other end of the line, then Julia sighed. “Then yes. Yeah. I’m happy for you.” She wasn’t. Why? Why couldn’t she let me have this? Nora tells us Julia isn't happy, but *Julia says she is.* So, which speaker is unreliable? I hope I come back to this with an edit. *edit but not the kind I hoped for. The author escalates the abuse Nora experiences at the hands of her friend, but I still hate how Julia is written. If she has untreated NPD or BPD and it's affecting her and other characters' lives, she should probably at least get realistic representation. That's the author's responsibility, to prevent growing stigma attached to mental illness– not bait the audience into wanting mentally ill characters dead. Ritany reveals in her afterword that Julia is based on a past friendship. Not research, which I recommend when writers are trying to handle characters with complex mental illness. Was this one of those times a writer decided to work out revenge in their fiction? She literally killed off a friend who hurt her feelings decades before. Julia's death doesn't even serve the plot. Also, this should go without saying, but here I am: mentally ill people (and characters) don't deserve to die because they're (in)convenient, difficult, or even hurtful.
3. The plot really struggles. The two girls are really nonsensical sometimes, and as a result, the plot wanders. But honestly, I remember acting like this as a teenager. And I knew lots of girls who acted like Nora or Julia. We made no sense to the outside world either.
4. The denouement is confusing, in part because the author introduces new characters and expands a couple of flat characters way more than is necessary or good for the narrative at this point. It's basically fifty pages about the romance subplot, which isn't needed, but which the author was clearly invested in.

I WISH this review was biased (maybe it is, who's askin'?), but this book is actually just that good.
I... Must get my thoughts in order.
This book is so important. For people who have insecurities about friendship, for people who've had a Julia in their lives, for people who might BE a Julia, for people who value friendship deeply, and for people who don't understand how someone can care so much.
I'll write more soon, once my emotions recover. If they ever do.
"Friendship, at least for me, had never been anything but complicated. I'm always waiting for something terrible. As I think that, I realize I'm waiting with her, too, for something to go wrong, for her to say something that makes me wilt on the inside. I'm always waiting."

I really enjoyed this book, it was frustrating at times but like in the most effective way (I’ll elaborate shortly) Julia is the most toxic friend like going into this picture PLL Ally levels. My frustration came a lot from the toxic parts of the relationship between Julia and Nora but I think that’s how you’re supposed to feel bc it clearly isn’t an ideal situation. The content matter is really well handled, I’ve been in versions of this scenario when I was younger and I’ve experienced grief and Alex did a great job of letting the reader feel those emotions through the story. This was also incredibly easy to read, something about the writing style makes the words just flow off the paper. Multiple timelines were handled well and really helped enhance the story. I’m also such a sucker for romance and I loved the relationship between Nora and Dillan 💗
A meander through grief brought on not only by loss but by abuse. Heart wrenching and gripping with just enough friendship and romantic hope to sustain the tears.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t put it down. This book is set in two timelines: Before the death of Julia, and after her death.
The author gives you just enough information as the story evolves to keep you guessing about how the death occurred, and why it happened in the first place.
This is a story of friendship and all the complications surrounding it; good and bad.
I highly recommend this book, and I look forward to future books by Alex Ritany.
The before and after of a tragic accident and a complicated friendship, that felt all too real honestly. This isn’t a genre I normally reach for, which made it a struggle to finish. But mostly because of how expertly the author is able to depict this toxic yet authentic relationship between Nora and Julia. I felt like I was back in grade school again, navigating friendships and boys. It was slightly uncomfortable to read, relating to Nora so much, but I think it gave the character such depth and understanding. Also, I was not expecting the love story to be so sweet. Who knew late-night juice runs could be so romantic?
This story is told on two different timelines: before and after the death of Julia, the best friend of our main character, Nora. I loved the back and forth chapters, although I wasnt sure about it at first. Julia and Nora are fast friends in middle school after Julia moves to town. When the story opens, they are in high school and things have changed a bit.
I found Nora to be extremely naive and even blind to the actions and words of Julia. She wanted to believe in her so badly, she overlooked a million red flags (and the whole red flag parade). That's really the only bad oart to this story because so many times, I was saying, "Good lord, this kid can't be this stupid. Wake up Nora!"
Still, it's a really great story in the end and I think my students will really like this one. Hopefully they never have a BFF like Julia.

This book is very precious to me. :’) Alex has done a BRILLIANT job at capturing the voice & true essence of YA writing - this is not just a book about teens, this is a book written FOR teens.
This story will be strikingly relatable to anyone who is or has once been a young person, but I had the extra special treat of this book being set in Calgary, my own hometown!! (a rarity I have never experienced before and what a wonderful surprise!!). While reading this I genuinely felt like I had stepped into my high school life for better or for worse, and all the Big Messy emotions, nail-biting stress, exhilarating firsts, confusing friendships, major decisions, and important things that were central to teenage days. Returning to that feeling was unexpected, cathartic, and satisfyingly melancholic. I was giggling and kicking my feet one chapter and punching at air the next. Dillan and Nora are my babies!!!!!
Moreover, the split timeline choices the author made were treated SO well and built tension and action perfectly between the before/after. I can’t wait to see what they write next!!!
Ooooof. This book! So well written, and it was so easy to follow the different timelines, which is hugely appreciated. The relationship between Nora and Julia is so complicated and while reading I couldn’t help but relating and empathizing to Nora’s conflicting emotions. The way this book is written just makes you feel like you’re right there in the thick of everything with her, and you’re trying to figure it all out like she is. I wanted to cry at times and I wanted to just put her and Dillan into a room together to just talk gosh darn it!!! So good. Would 10000000000% read anything by this author!!!
Parasti es šāda veida grāmatu neņemtu un šoreiz man to ieteica izlasīt bibliotekāre. Un es to nemaz nenožēloju. Patiesībā man pat ļoti patika! Autors lieliski aprasta nodevības sajūtu un sāpes pēc tam.
LOVED THIS. Took me back into the feelings of tumultuous teen friendships and the serious and big feelings that come with it. So excited to read more by Alex.
Wow. This story has made me lose my words. It was just so good. It took up all my space in my brain for 3 days. The storyline and flips between before and after, so cool. Genuinely excited to read more from Alex!
Also: - I feel like the name Julia is used so much for antagonists in books. When You Reach Me? and now this? Personally, I know a few great Julias (shout out) but I also knew one who was kind of just a brat (also for context this was when I was nine. I'm sure she's a lovely person now. imo ballet brings out the worst in us all). - I don't know if this is just me seeing this that I want to see BUT the sibling duo in this book is Simon and Nora, and the sibling duo in Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is ALSO Simon and Nora. :)
Overall, I really enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone looking for a book that handles dual timelines and a complicated friendship expertly. ☕🚗📔🧃
don’t talk to me i’m processing for five to ten business days.
the writing?? masterful. consistently felt like i was staring at a floor to ceiling tapestry and looking for the loose threads that often show up in most other tapestries and genuinely, i could not see a single one. the number of times i would read a one-liner, pause, go back to reread and think “OH. that is going to be Significant Later!” is too many to count - i’m certain there was not a single chapter that passed without it. the result was a story of grief and complicated relationships that unfolded PERFECTLY in a dual storyline in a way that i’ve never seen in any other novel - never at any point did it feel as if Alex was coyly holding onto details until an appropriate word count had been surpassed to justify a third act twist, instead it felt exactly as if i was in Nora’s head as she worked through her feelings in real time and THAT’S THE DREAM, BABY!!! while i love to appreciate the workings of fiction in its various forms, sometimes it’s a relief to sit back and have a story told TO you and be able to let go of your suspended disbelief and immerse yourself fully, no loose threads cluttering your vision.
This is one of the most captivating books I've ever read. The toxic friendship between Nora and Julia is written with such heart-wrenching realism that anyone who has ever experienced a similar dynamic will feel a deep kinship with Nora. And Nora's journey to understand that relationship, and how it has shaped her life, is deeply moving.
The romance in the book is so compelling and well-developed. One thing I cannot stand in YA books is when the main couple seems to only be together because they are a girl and boy who are in frequent contact and physically attracted to each other. With the romance in this book, I could see the unique and complementary nature of their dynamic with each other, their incredible conversational chemistry, and the fact that they just really seemed to enjoy each other's company and care about each other as people. This also makes their conflicts within the book cut so much deeper, because I got so invested in their connection so quickly.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I cannot wait to read it again!

DNF - this is one of many books I've read where there's a split timeline: before and after, and a really deserving (or perhaps not so deserving) victim. Julia was just presented so unlikeably, and Nora gave me no reason to root fo her, that I couldn't bring myself to care what happened.
"Patiesības nav. Ir tikai stāsti. Visu nosaka tas, kuram tu visvairāk tici."
Vidusskola.
This book could have been easily 1/3 the length, and there were so many instances of that tired trope of characters just not talking to each other. What I thought would be a rough and deep dive into emotional abuse between friends was honestly the B plot to the romance that took over the last half of the book.
