Rate this book
In the Mouth of the Tiger is an epic story of adventure, love, mystery and intrigue set in Malaya, in the colourful and turbulent years before and after World War 2. Nona Orlov, a young Russian refugee abandoned in colonial Penang, falls in love with an Englishman who offers escape from her tawdry hand-to-mouth existence and catapults her into a world of mansions, expensive cars, well-bred horses and luxurious yachts.

But Denis Elesmere-Elliott is much more than the urbane, wealthy man-about-town that he appears, and Nona is plunged into a dark world of treachery, violence and sudden death. As the mysteries multiply, Nona realises that, if she is to survive, her courage must match those of the tigers that frequent the jungles around her.

I absolutely loved this book and felt completely immersed in Malaya, Singapore and Australia during WW2. The story is an absolute page turner, I had to keep reading and found it difficult to put down. The research knowledge of the authors is evident in the detailed background of the characters and settings. The connection with Ian Fleming and James Bond adds to the air of glamorous intrigue. Fascinating that the story of this family is mostly completely true. It would make a gripping mini-series— I am surprised it hasn’t been filmed already!

Although this book took a long time to read due to it having 8oo pages, I was kept enthralled and captivated throughout its entirety.
The fall of Singapore became real to me for the first time ever and the lives Denis and Norma lived working as foreign agents kept me on the edge of my seat and I kept wanting to read more.
Their lives were filled with excitement, treachery and fear just to name a few.
I would recommend this book to anyone as one of my finest reads ever!

In the Mouth of the tiger by Lynette Silver, Derek Emerson Elliot. Published 2014.

Vivid, intriguing and entirely evocative love story set in Malaysia, KL, Singapore, England and Australia, from early 1900’s til end of WW2. My-oh-My, the espionage that went on…in all types of countries and levels of society…!Fascinating look at the changing politics in the Malaya region, whilst following the great love between Nona Orlov, a young Russian refugee residing in colonial Penang, and Denis, an Englishman who offers her a multi-dimensional world of espionage, stunning homes including a beachside mansion in Malaya, romantic cars, well-bred horses, yachts and fascinating dinner parties. There’s intrigue under every bush, as inch by inch, we learn that Denis Elesmere-Elliott is not always what he seems. Nona gets plunged into a dark world of treachery, violence and sudden death. Mysteries unfold and Nona realises that, if she is to survive, her courage and wisdom needs to intensify. Which it does. Big time! It rings true, probably because of the sharp writing and the characters and events have been based on real life happenings and people. Awe-inspiring research and memorable characters. Amazing and spell binding. Read it four days because I became addicted. Now I need to read it again. Why? Because I cannot say farewell!!!! Am not ready to put it to sleep. Cannot wait for the film!!!

Totally unbelievable even if parts are purported to be true. Denis was an appalling sexist snob and as for Norma or Nona or whatever she called herself - hideous! The worst kind of hooray Henry's and not even very well written. 2 stars because the background to the Second World War was interesting.
