Icebound: A Play

Rate this book
The story follows Ben Sanford, recently released from prison, as he reluctantly accepts the conditions of his inheritance. Initially resentful and apathetic, Ben is forced to confront his estranged family members and reconcile with his troubled past. The presence of Jane Crosby, a distant cousin hired as the family housekeeper, adds complexity to the story. Jane, a hardworking and no-nonsense woman, becomes an anchor for Ben, challenging him to find purpose and face his inner conflicts. Through her influence, Ben’s resentment begins to thaw, and he gradually develops a sense of responsibility and self-worth.

Tensions escalate as family members conspire against Ben, determined to challenge the will and claim their share of the inheritance. Amidst the bitter cold of the New England winter, the Sanford family dynamics unravel, revealing deeper secrets and old grudges. The play portrays each character’s motivations, capturing the desperation and bitterness born from unmet expectations and suppressed desires. Yet, through these conflicts, Ben begins to change, ultimately finding a path to redemption and understanding.

The frozen wasteland that are some families

"Just a few folks together, day after day , and every ' little thing you don't like about the other raspin ' on your nerves ' til it almost drives you crazy ! Most folks quiet , because they've said all the things they've got to say a hundred times; other folks talkin ', talkin ', talkin ' about nothing. Sometimes somebody sort of laughs, and it scares you ; seems like laughter needs the sun, same as flowers do. Icebound , that's what we are all of us , inside and out. "

Such is the time of this play, set in rural Maine, as the pinch-faced Jordans, of old Pilgrim stock, sit Shibboleth awaiting the passing of the family matron. Youngest son Ben, a World War I vet, is one step ahead of the law and disinclined to spend time with his trust dependent siblings who are already spending the wealth not even yet in reach. This 1923 Off-Broadway play by #owendavis won the #pulitzerprizefordrama is a moral drama with a predictable outcome.
