They have liberated the Detainment camp and now the military is ordered to incarcerate the DHS and allow the rest of the camp to leave. But there is no where to go for many of the formerly detained. Many expect the fragile military to continue to sustain them. Some are former DHS members that chose to infiltrate the population rather than be arrested.
An unexpected forest fire is now threatening Morgan’s camp and friends. This is pushing more people towards them that are desolate and dangerous. It does not seem possible to maintain a home with this threat and past events still a fresh memory. Morgan’s group along with Sarge’s followers are resourceful but is that enough?
This writing has just enough action mixed with conflict resolution to keep most reader’s attention. 4/5 is a fair rating.

If the current challenges were not enough, a massive fire threatens what is left of everyone's way of life.

Recently read all five books in this series. Basically each is a how-to of tips for post-apocalyptic survival woven together into storylines about a man (Morgan) and his family (wife and three daughters); a man (Thad) and a young girl (Jess) whose families have all died/been murdered; and a gnarly old ex-soldier (Sarge) with a small crew of other ex-soldiers.

The titles really tell the essence of each book. In the first, Going Home, the country is subjected to the collapse of the entire power grid and Morgan has to travel 250 miles, mostly on foot, to return to his home and family. Along the way, he meets Thad and Jess and Sarge. In the second, Surviving Home, the great difficulties of post-apocalyptic life become more and more real. In the third, Escaping Home, they decide they have to leave their very well-appointed refuge/bunker/home for another location that is more isolated and, they hope, more secure. In the fourth, Forsaking Home, all four friends are reunited and form a new community with few resources but strong personal ties and good potential for the future, whatever it may hold. In Resurrecting Home, a huge, intense wildfire threatens the community and its welfare is further endangered by marauding bands fleeing the fire.

The writer seems a bit of an amateur and could have used additional editorial assistance, but the vast extent of his research into survival skills shines through. "Mr. American" is to be congratulated for sharing his knowledge through this series. I enjoyed hearing the stories of the main characters in a sort of a tales-around-the-campfire way. I did come to care about Morgan and Thad and Jess and (even hard-ass Sarge) and wanted to hear about what happened to them, how they made out. Not great literature but definitely fun (and interesting) to read. And probably the most enjoyable survival manual ever written. Listened to all five audiobooks narrated by Duke Fontaine.

This was my least favorite out of the series so far.
It was military heavy and that’s been my least favorite part of the story line so far.
All the women are so weak. Kay- “I can cook and clean” great join the other seven women there they do absolutely nothing except cook sometimes. Because Thad does most of the cooking. I’m really not sure what the women do.
The one “bad ass” woman gets taken down by some woman That has no combat training!
I did not agree with the nepotistic choice of deputies.
Also, let’s not being “judge jury and executioner” but at the same time let’s just kill people if we think they’ll be a threat.
Also, what kind of prepper does not prep their family for an event your daughters literally can’t do anything except for the seven year old that catches squirrels for food.
The fire? Pfft- ok

This is the fifth book in the Survivalist series so it obviously has a following. I received an advance copy through Penguin's First to Read program.

This was the first book I have read in this series and I felt a bit lost at the beginning. I had no knowledge of what went before and perhaps there should have been a forward or short synopsis for those who couldn't remember or started in the middle.

The characters are well drawn and interesting. I liked the writing style but because I hadn't read the earlier books can't give it more than a three because I had a hard time relating to the people.

This is a great book for people that enjoy dystopian futures and serial books. If you realize there is never going to be an ending until the books no longer sell or the author dies.

Of the first five books this is the most full of action volume. Its crazy there are so many happenings but it never seems to feel rushed. The overall plot of fighting the fire takes the entire book but in between there are a ton of characters introduced and or dealt with. Also Duke Fontaine is such a great narrator.

This survivalist series was a bit annoying as it based most of conspiratorial plot on the government getting people dependant on the state. After people needed welfare, food stamps, assistance in any form they were somehow not as worthy to freedom and would blindly comply with the government. This political philosophy is wrong in my eyes, but there are some that believe this. This is just a story and I enjoy the DHS jokes. The book has spelling errors and is not a mainstream published book. I like that about it and the story is good. The is good for me because it follows a few people and their adventures while imparting some prepping knowledge. This book does not have a lot of surprises but it is an easy and good read.

I finished books 4 and 5 of A. American's series, "Forsaking Home" and "Resurrecting Home", respectively. In book 4 the main antagonists in the neighborhood, the DHS, get dealt with and in book 5 the new opponent is nature, in the form of a large forest fire. The last time I read this series must have been before 2020, or else I would have remembered seeing the parallels between the fire in the book and the Cameron Peak wildfire last time I read it. Both books are well-written, entertaining, and very easy to read.

Although not my favorite so far (#5 in the series), the story gets better towards the end. The book really starts out slow and doesn't get better (if you can say that) until nearly halfway through.

It's nice to see this group have some stability in their lives considering the situation they are in. But I wonder if that will last.

I read some of the "negative" comments and cannot agree with them. Once I start a series, I try to follow it through. This is not a bad read, it's just not the best.

Number 5 was a little uninspiring although it is good to see some stability in the daily lives of the merry band of survivors.

The family/neighborhood will always have problems cropping up, but with the addition of Sarge and his crew, security should become more consistent.

This is a good stopping point for me. The big question still remains: what caused the problem - a natural occurrence or a sinister conspiracy?

So I'm WAY into this series and enjoying them, however, Just like the first three, I loved them for the general concept and education I received. The writing of the story was good too, but the dialogue is awful. There were a lot of typos.

Book 5 of the Going home series, and it is still going strong. The story line is a medium paced plot, but does not bog down. New challenges await the group of preppers as well as the military types. Enough going on to keep the interest up, and the series going

Book #1 is mainly about him getting home. Book #2 is mainly about them surviving their neighborhood. Book #3 is mainly about them surviving in the woods. Book #4 is about them surviving the DHS camp nearby. This one is mainly about them surviving a huge forest fire.

Exciting read

I like how there's survival tips in here- random stuff, like how to prepare a hog, making four from kudzu ... AND the action lasts all throughout the book! Looking forward to the next installment!

A great book

Ok,ok... maybe this was the slowest of the series so far. I am sure I am not the first to say it. The book ended on a high note. I am sure the next will be crazy.
