4.5 stars This book was pretty engrossing for me and made me smile which I count as a big positive. The heroine is stranded in a storm and knocks on the hero's door. She intends to leave the next day but she didn't count on his adorable yet naughty four-year old daughter. The hero really comes across as very uptight at first, he is super rich and successful and a lot of people depend on him but he is also very lonely and over-worked. Our heroine has been making her way across the country for a year, to grow a tough skin, she has a habit of taking in broken birds that leave her shattered in the end. The only time the heroine sees vulnerability in the hero is when he night-walks which scares the hell out of her at first because no matter where she sleeps he finds her; creepy yet he is sweet with her. I loved how the heroine put the spark back in his life which he had forgotten assuming all responsibility for his family at 14. She does try her level best not to fall for him but fails. I found these two adorable and his daughter too.
***MINOR SPOILERS *** This book is a standalone book but it is a part of the Born in the USA series in which each book is set in a different state. This book is set in South Dakota. I have read several books by the author in the past, but it had been several years, so I thought I would see what I thought now. I read it about 30 years after the book was written and it reflects that time. The technology is out of date (phones with cords on the wall). Simon’s divorce involved his ex-wife getting primary custody. There is one tap to the bottom when Jessica, Simon’s young daughter, hides for four hours from Simon and Bree in order to get her way. Bree grew up in Louisiana in a big family, but she feels that she has made mistakes with her relationships. She has spent a year driving around the country to think about her life and to do some growing up. When she is stranded in a storm, she serendipitously finds the home of Simon and Jessica. Bree is a giving, strong woman. She has, in the past, given her all to relationships but it was not reciprocated. She is worried that she will do the same with Simon and Jessica because they both clearly need someone to care for them. Eventually, she does help them and love them but it is reciprocated as they love her back. Simon is a smart, successful businessman who has become an automaton in self defense. His family and employees want him to be successful for their benefit. When his ex-wife drops off Jessica and Bree finds him in the storm, his life takes a turn back into color and emotion and caring relationships. Simon is a sleepwalker and he comes to Bree in the night. When he first does so, Bree is understandably worried, until she realizes that he means no harm and that he is asleep. When she tells him to leave, he does. The idea of him being a sleepwalker is symbolic of how he has evolved into a person who sleepwalks through life. Bree is his night light, the person, along with Jessica, who brings light back into his life. Bree, on the other hand, is a sleepwalker too in a way. She was hurt by her last boyfriend and was afraid to trust anyone and is trying to shut her feelings down. She learns that she can trust Simon. The book was made to be a particular length for the series it was in. So, while some ideas could have been drawn out a little more, it is well done for its length. For example, they were both giving people who are burnt out. What they do with that differs but they are caretakers. The author is available to convey emotions and actions well. At times, her writing is touching. The sleepwalking reality and analogy might be unbelievable for some and as a result, they might not like the book. However, if you accept it and go with the flow, then it works. Spoiler…Also, given Simon’s business, it is unlikely that he would be able to live in the middle of nowhere back then, but hey, I like the fairytale. The house sounded interesting. The book is a quick read. I remembered why I liked this author in the past and could read another.
I enjoyed this book and would reread it so gave it a five star rating. When your caught in a storm with lightening coming down all around you any port in the storm is welcome. Expect the surly man that lets you in and gives you a room could be a problem when he shows up later sleep walking. Love how the characters come across as real people and work to solve the problems that happen. A free spirit lady and a man with too much on his plate including a imaginative child. A fun read.
