This is a charming spin-off from The Lady Darriby-Jones Mystery series. Maeve is unsure what to expect when she inherits an estate in Scotland. When the body of a professor is discovered on her first day she investigates due to the police department's incompetence. While investigating, learning her role as a countess, and dealing with insolent staff, she finds herself making allies in the most unexpected places. This is a great start to a new series. I am looking forward to the continuation of this series as Maeve becomes more secure in her role and understanding of the area she is now a part of.
Now that she has moved to Scotland can Sgt Maeve Morgan leave her police work behind and fulfill her new duties as the Countess of Baritone and Strathfulton? After encountering the dead body of a schoolteacher, she notifies the police department and is immediately arrested. As a spin-off of the Lady Darriby-Jones books it seems that the Countess will end up using her previous experience in assisting the short-handed police department, as well as taking on the responsibilities of the Countess. Looking forward to the next book in this series. A quick read filled with mystery and humor,
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest and voluntary review.
It makes more sense, when you read the stories in sequence. I like this Maeve, ex sergeant of a police force turned Countess. I think a commoner might just do better than the aristocracy, sometimes, and she is proving that point gracefully. In this adventure, the school teacher in the nearby village has been murdered and it seems up to the Countess to find his murderer, because the rural constable seems to want to call it an accident and forget about it. The killer is found and order is restored. The story is a good one, though and well worth your time and effort to read.
A great new series starter, I hope! Maeve the Police Sergeant from the Lady Darriby-Jones series has inherited a title & a large estate in the distant Scottish Highlands. On the day she arrives the local school teacher is found dead in his chair by one of his students. Countess Maeve gets arrested! Her lawyer arrives & soon gets her freed & they set about trying to sort out who did the deed and why. A fun book to read, several giggles escaped me. .
This is a fantastic spin off story for the Lady Darriby-Jones series with one of my favourite characters, Maeve, inheriting a castle in Scotland. As always, never a dull moment and lots of humour kept me enjoying the book. I recommend this book and I am looking forward to reading this series.
I read this book as part of an advance reader team and am voluntarily writing this review.
I received an ARC and this is my voluntary review. A good new cozy mystery featuring Maeve Morgan in Scotland as a countess. When she comes across a murdered teacher in her new town she becomes the main suspect in his murder. With her former background as a police officer she must delve into the people and see who could have done the murder. A truly enjoyable first book in a new series that hopefully will have many more books.
Maeve inherits a castle and lands and leaves her job as police sergeant behind. The school master is murdered and the search begins for the killer. You meet many interesting characters that work for Maeve but also become her friends. The book was slow to get started but find has an unexpected ending. I was given this book as an advanced reader copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
This is a joy to read. A spin off from this authors others series. Maeve Morgan ex police sergeant is now a Countess, complete with a crumbling estate, no staff, no support and currently prime suspect in the schoolteachers murder. A witty tale with lovely characters, excellent storyline and mystery. Loved it and I have already bought the next one. I am hooked. I received an ARC copy but then bought the book anyway.
She expects challenges, restoring the crumbling estate, gaining the trust of her wary staff, and settling into the role of Countess. What she doesn’t expect is to become the prime suspect in a murder investigation. She isn't responsible for this, but who is? I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This in no way affects my opinions of this book.
This was a great read! A fish out of water if you like. Young woman suddenly inherits a huge amount of land and a castle. Same young woman now a countess! Yes, Miss Maeve Morgan is now Lady Maeve. But she hasn't left her police instincts behind her! She finds a dead body, gets arrested for the crime but she saves the day and makes new friends along the way.
An inheritance leads to a new start. But it also leads to murder and becoming a suspect. This is a new cozy series that focus on a strong-willed female sleuth. It has potential to be a worthy series.
