Detective Casey White #13

Shadow on Her Grave

Rate this book
The beads of saltwater caught on her cracked lips glitter in the moonlight, her long brown hair floating in the tide. But this beautiful girl is lost forever. And Casey’s biggest fears are realised. Someone is copying the worst of her previous following her like a shadow. And they’ll stop at nothing to make sure she pays for her own mistakes…

As her soon-to-be-husband, Jericho Flynn, goes back to work as town sheriff, Detective Casey White is left juggling her work alongside her growing family. And when a spate of troubling murders hit the Outer Banks, the happy couple are stopped in their tracks…

Casey is called to a crime scene with eerie echoes to a killing she solved years ago. A young woman has been anchored to a boulder and drowned, just like in the Saltwater Graves murders.

Then a handwritten poem is delivered to Casey at the station. She immediately recognises the writing as that of a previous victim she couldn’t save. The killer is pointing them to yet another crime scene from Casey’s past. Only someone with knowledge of the original cases could recreate these murders with terrible accuracy. And the only link is Casey herself.

The team chase the lead to a now-derelict beach house, way out on an abandoned island. Casey is totally devastated when they discover the lifeless body of Jericho’s late wife, Jessie Flynn, posed in one of the upstairs rooms.

This is her most personal challenge yet. As they chase down a killer that could be closer than they ever imagined, will Casey and Jericho both make it out alive?

Shadow on Her Grave is a book that you won't be able to put down! The book starts off at a frantic pace and continues on throughout. I finished Shadow on Her Grave in one day and I hadn't planned on that. This is book 13 in the Detective Casey White series by B.R. Spangler, This series is becoming one of my very faves to read. I can't wait for book 14 so I hope B.R. is busy writing! Jericho Flynn, the sheriff, is engaged to Detective Casey Flynn and they are in the middle of wedding planning. Casey goes to a crime scene on the beach in the Outer Banks. A young woman has been anchored to a boulder and killed by drowning. It's a horrific way to die and reminds Casey of another case.

The killer is toying with Casey when she receives a poem at the station. It's handwritten and linked to another victim that Casey couldn't save. The killer is giving her clues about where her next crime scene will be. The person doing this seems to have inside knowledge of Casey's cases because some of these things weren't released publicly. Is the killer someone she knows? How else could they get this information about Casey's other cases?

When the team follows clues to a broken down beach house, they discover another body. This time Jericho knows the victim as it's his late wife. This killer has dug up Jericho's wife from the graveyard and placed her here. Why would someone do such a horrible thing? How could they do this without anyone noticing at the cemetery? Jericho is visibly shaken and emotions are all over his face. They've got to find this killer before he strikes again, but how? He always seems to be one step ahead of them. As the investigation proceeds, the team is in danger at every turn. Will Jericho, Casey, and the team make it through this case alive? This book is amazing and one of the best thrillers I've read this year. I rate Shadow on Her Grave 5 stars with my very highest recommendation. The book is out on July 18 and can be enjoyed as a standalone or by readers invested in the series. Will the wedding actually take place? Will Jericho and Casey solve the case without losing each other? You'll have to read it to find out! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Shadows on Her Grave in exchange for a fair review. #ShadowOnHerGrave

My thoughts:
B.R. Spangler always shares a twisty, intense story….Shadow on Her Grave is right up there with an action packed, thriller read.
Multiple murders
Copycat murders
Bomb threats
You will be kept on the edge of your seat reading Shadow on Her Grave.
This is book #13 in the Detective Casey White series. I highly recommend reading the books in order as there is so much backstory you need to know about Casey, Jericho and her team of investigators.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I’ve been a long time fan of the series, and this was one of my favorite detective Casey White books yet! So many twists, turns and ghosts from the past that had me speeding through to the conclusion. I loved seeing old characters, old thrilling cases, and a whole lot of adrenaline inducing scenes. Already can’t wait for the next case!

Detective Casey White returns in a gripping new story as she prepares to make significant changes in her life. Just as she is about to marry Jericho and retire from the department to focus on raising her new family, Casey is faced with a case that could prove to be the most challenging of her career, which is significant given her history.

As a young girl has been found murdered, and the scene and evidence seem eerily familiar to Casey. And soon after, a handwritten poem is delivered to the station, and Casey immediately recognizes the writing as belonging to a previous victim she couldn't save. This leads them to another crime scene, leaving Casey convinced that someone is toying with her and Jericho by using past cases to commit new crimes— with unnerving accuracy.

And as Casey and her team dig deeper, they unearth a lead that takes them to a long-abandoned island and a now-derelict beach house, where they discover the lifeless body of Jericho's first wife, Jessie, posed in an upstairs bedroom. So now more determined than ever to catch this killer, Casey and Jericho pull out all the stops.

However, this killer may be closer than they ever imagined.

And with perfect pacing and plenty of twists, Shadow on Her Grave kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! I would happily recommend to all.

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy of Shadow on Her Grave. All thoughts expressed are my own. 😊

Shadow on Her Grave is the latest in the Detective Casey White series, an excellent police procedural collection. Casey is a detective in the Outer Banks, who uprooted her life in Philadelphia in pursuit of her kidnapped daughter, several years before. The book can be read as a standalone as the author gives enough background material to a new reader.

In this latest, Casey is contemplating retirement and is likely working her last case. However, it becomes complicated as a series of killings appears to be related to previous cases solved by Casey in the past. The book is fast-paced and I found myself tearing through the chapters. What I always enjoy about this series is the character development and how the personal life of Casey is instrumental to the story and the series. I can’t wait to read the next one!

Thanks to the author, NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.

This was a good ending to this series. It was full of suspense and drama. I felt the tension throughout the whole book. I completely forgot about Paige, and then boom she was back with all the tension the story had when she first was introduced to the story. I actually thought she was the one behind the new murders. Turns out it was another one of her victims trying to get justice for his family who were also effected by Paige. The story ended with Casey and Jericho getting married. Casey also is pregnant. It wrapped the series up pretty neatly.

Pulse Pounding Harrowing Mystery. This is one of those books that feels like it could be a series finale even through the beginning of the epilogue. Spangler has already shown earlier in this series that he isn't afraid to kill team members off, and that knowledge feeds the tension of oh so many scenes throughout this book. But there *is* a lot of prior series history baked into this book, in more than just the obvious ways, and so for that reason it is better for long time fans of this series rather than those potentially looking to jump in. (For those wanting to jump in, I recommend going back to either the *very* beginning, Book 1 - Where Lost Girls Go, or at minimum where I personally joined the series, with Book 4 - The Crying House. I've loved every book since, and I think many who find books due to my reviews will as well. :D) But for those of us who *have* been around this series for a while... wow. What a ride. Spangler has been known to have some creepy killers throughout this book, but with these he is beginning to cross into Thomas Harris (he of The Silence Of The Lambs fame and creator of Hannibal Lecter) territory, though some might argue that Spangler has been at least at that level for several books now, he just doesn't insist on going *that* far with *every* book the way Harris does. :) So whether you're reading this for the coastal Carolina family vibes (and to be clear, those play nearly as much a role deep in this series as the mysteries of each book do) or whether you're coming for the mystery and in particular because I just called out Harris, know that Spangler does a tremendous job of marrying both together, and indeed, as with Without Remorse by Tom Clancy, it is the familial bonds and the comfort there that makes the sheer utter depravity of our killer here balance so well in this book.

Again, long time fans, you're gonna love this - and have probably already read it by the time I write this review for my spot in the publisher's blog tour the Monday after the book released on Friday. For those just coming in, you're going to be glad this book is already here... and you're going to want the next one in your hand immediately too. Which means Spangler should probably get a jump on writing it. ;)

Very much recommended.

Shadow on her grave by B.R. Spangler.
Detective Casey White Book 13.
This was a really good read. This is my 3rd book by this author. I got into it straight away. I read this in a few days. I did like Casey character. I liked the writing style and the story. I did have a theory of who it was. But I was wrong. I was surprised by who it was. I did like the ending. I do hope there is more to come. I would recommend this book.

Sometimes, I’m sad to come to the end of a book because then, I have to leave characters who feel like friends. This is how I felt when Shadow on Her Grace (Detective Casey White Book 13) ended. B. R. Spangler created a thrilling and suspenseful story. I’ve read most of the Casey White series, and this new story is a great addition.

The first chapter was quite poignant, with a description of Violet drowning, which was scary and sad. The duality of Casey’s life as both a detective and a soon-to-be bride adds depth to her character.

As the murders unfold, the stakes become increasingly personal, and the emotional weight of Casey’s previous cases weighs heavily on her, making her journey not just one of solving crimes but also of confronting her own demons. The author’s skillful plotting is on full display as the mystery unfolds. Every twist and turn feels carefully crafted, leading to a shocking and satisfying climax. The killer’s taunting gestures link back to Casey’s past and are executed quite well.

Shadow on Her Grave is a haunting tale that delivers thrills and suspense. I feel it’s a must-read for fans of the genre. I would highly recommend this book and this series because of the well-developed characters and their journeys, as well as the crisp writing of the author.

When the first case in this story was described, I immediately had a sense of déjà vu. And not long after, it turned out I was completely right—Casey felt exactly the same.
What’s more chilling than someone digging up old murder cases and recreating them? What is the purpose of this? It seems like someone is targeting her for some still-unclear reason, but as the story progresses, it becomes more and more apparent that she isn’t the only one in the killer’s sights.

When Casey has a hunch about the identity of the killer, it seems like everyone on her team thinks she’s lost her mind—but she insists on following her instincts. Was she right all along, or are they chasing the wrong lead?

And then there’s that final chapter, especially the first sentence… I think I stopped breathing for a moment.
This is book 13, a number many consider unlucky. Luckily, Casey and Jericho aren’t superstitious, and fortune is on their side.

This is one of my favorite series—not only because of the amazing main characters, but also because of the author’s creativity and storytelling talent. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment and am eagerly and impatiently awaiting the next book. 5 stars.

Thank you.

The thirteenth installment in the Casey White series delivers exactly what fans have come to love—familiar characters, gripping suspense, and emotionally charged storytelling. Casey, Jericho, and their blended family bring a warmth and continuity that makes each return to the Outer Banks feel like catching up with old friends.
The novel opens with a chilling scene: a young woman found drowned, her foot shackled to a rock. Spangler weaves in grounded, day-to-day details like the police station refurbishment that anchor the narrative and offer moments of normalcy amidst the chaos.
High-stakes scenes, such as the pulse-pounding bomb disposal sequence, are masterfully written and stand out as highlights of the book. Yet for all its thrills, I couldn't shake a feeling of déjà vu as past cases resurfaced. While it adds layers of personal investment, I’m hoping future installments let the team face fresh horrors without the shadow of their old investigations.
A compelling and well-crafted mystery with plenty of heart—but perhaps time to draw a line under the past and step into new ground.

Turbocharged emotions: heart-pounding moments that grip you to your core!

Spangler truly delivered in book 13, Shadow on her grave. As Detective Casey White prepares to leave her role as detective and switch to being the primary caregiver to her and Jericho’s adopted children, she is faced with a final case that will have you wondering who will be left standing at the end.

Working with Casey, Emanuel Wilson has returned, stepping into the lead role, and set to take Casey’s position when she leaves. Tracey has started her new role as Investigator with the DA’s office but works closely with the team on this latest case along with Jericho, back in the role of Sheriff, in this emotionally charged case.

Someone has started recreating old cases - some of the worst serial killer cases the team have worked. There are flashbacks throughout, with the team struggling to understand who could be behind these brutal and senseless murders, their motive, and their end game.

The final scenes will have you gripped: an emotional rollercoaster that at one point had me shaking my head, saying out loud, “No, no, no, NO! Thankfully, I could breathe again with a beautiful, heartfelt ending.

This is #13 in this series abut I have only read a few. I live in Southern California but was born and raised in a small Appalachian town. Vacation at the Outer Banks many times and still have many wonderful memories. I truly enjoy stories when the Outer Banks is the setting.

This series features recurring characters Detective White and her soon to be husband Sheriff Jericho Flynn, as well as their blended family.

Story opens with a chilling scene: missing person Violet Jones is found drowned on the ocean’s edge with her foot chained to a cinderblock.
After some initial investigation Casey has a hunch about the identity of the killer, it seems like everyone on her team thinks she’s lost her mind.
There was so much going on in this story I had to remind myself to ‘breathe’!!

Book 13 in the fantastic Detective Casey White series. I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive reading this after how the previous book ended. But I needn't have worried. It was as wonderful as the previous books. I loved going back to the old cases and I was totally blindsided when the killer was revealed. Loved and and can't wait to read more.

This series has blown me away, it needs to be said. How the author thinks of half of the things that occur in these books is incredible. This particular one, he has pulled out all the stops and there were many scenarios where I caught my breath!

Casey is investigating a body that is chained to some cinder blocks. Why did someone do that to this young woman and why are there echoes of a previous case that Casey and her team solved? She is about to quit her job and become a full-time mum as her fiance is back being the Sheriff and their children need one of them to be at home. However, as the bodies start to pile up, including a really shocking one from Jericho's past, Casey figures out the connection. And the revelation is shocking. Can she really leave her career behind when there are cases to be solved?

This was a tautly written thriller and I loved it!

I am also enjoying the little snippets of Casey and Jericho's life that the author blends into the story, it really gives it heart.

4.5 stars from me.

Another gripping addition to the Casey White series!

“Shadow on Her Grave” delivers everything I’ve come to expect from B.R. Spangler suspense, emotion, and a mystery that keeps you turning pages late into the night. By book 13, you’d think the formula might start to wear thin, but this one still feels fresh.

Casey White continues to be a complex and compelling protagonist. Her dedication to justice, even when it puts her in danger, remains one of the strongest parts of the series. The case in this installment is dark and chilling, but handled with the kind of depth and sensitivity Spangler does well.

The pacing was solid, and while I had a few guesses about the ending, it still managed to surprise me. I especially appreciated the character development not just with Casey, but with her team as well.

Why not five stars? A couple of minor plot points felt a bit convenient, and I wanted just a little more emotional payoff in the final chapter. But overall, this was a satisfying, tension-filled read that fans of the series will definitely enjoy.

B. R. Spangler has a great way of weaving a story and his latest book in the Detective Casey White series does not disappoint at all. I've always enjoyed this series and Shadow on Her Grave has the best start and I was pulled into the story quickly and it held my attention and interest all the way through. Casey investigates a murder similar to an old case and has to face her past in order to solve it. I loved the return of an old character, and hope to see more from them again. The authors writing is good and engaging and the plot is very well thought out. The story is fast paced and full of thrills, mystery and suspense that had me needing to know more and in my opinion makes this book a cracker of a read. I loved the ending, it gives good closure and I look forward to reading the next book. If you like police procedurals I'd recommend this although if you're new to this series read the books in order to know the characters from the start.

Detective Casey White is thinking in a short time her life will forever change. She's getting married to now Sheriff Jericho Flynn, finally, and she's retiring form her job as a detective. But all that is now all but forgotten. A young girl is found murdered and the evidence seems familiar to Casey. When a second young girl is found murdered, her evidence familiar as well, Casey is sure that someone is toying with them, using past cases for new murders. As Casey and the team dig further, she is sure that a woman thought long dead is not so dead after all. Paige Kotes did the unthinkable; she murdered several people, most importantly, Jericho's first wife, and nearly Jericho as well. Now it seems, however unlikely, Paige is back for more. When the police finally get a break it leads them to more than they could ever imagine and they only hope they will all come out alive and no more people will die.

My head is spinning in a good way!! “Shadow on Her Grave” by B.R. Spangler starts off with a BANG and the action doesn’t stop. This is Book 13 in the Detective Casey White series. This is the first book I’m reading and it can be read as a stand alone. But I do want to go back to read them all because I really liked this and one.
While Detective Casey White is planning her wedding she she comes across a murder similar to one she dealt with in the past. The killer starts toying with her and her fiancee and it’s a rush to catch the killer.
Loved this un-put-downable fast paced story. I also enjoyed the relationship with Casey and Jericho. I’m so glad I found this series! Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Shadow on her Grave by B.R. Spangler
I will have to read this series from the beginning, because this book sucked me and and endeared these characters to me. But I need to know the history and details leading to this plot.

I enjoyed Spangler’s writing and how the story was told. Jumping into a series at book 13 is risky, but the backstory was covered with enough detail to keep me reading.

I think I would appreciate the plot more if I understood the reference to past cases and mentions of characters. But I was impressed at how easily I could get lost in this storyline, despite jumping in so late.

I enjoyed this book. The writing was excellent, and the pacing was controlled and choreographed beautifully. I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning.

The shock value in this book will leave you speechless and chilled. This killer is beyond depraved.

Detective Casey White and team will have their hands full. For Casey, the stakes are also high for multiple reasons, some personal and others professional.

This tense thriller was at times electrifying, twisty, emotional and a lot of times more than a little horrifying. I always enjoy the characters in this series and their attachment to each other. It makes reading about them seem more personal as you get to know them on a professional and personal level.

The author really hit this one out of the park. When I started reading this one, time lost all meaning as I lived and breathed this book until I saw the end. Now I need to watch cartoons.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Fast paced and chillingly addictive! Fans of Detective Casey White will be thrilled to be reconnecting with Casey and her sidekicks as danger comes knocking close to home when a new case stirs up memories of past cases one after another. This series is always wrought with tension and danger and is highly entertaining as we try to piece together who is doing what. I love Casey and Jericho and can't wait to see what the future holds. Tracy/Hannah is getting on my nerves with the games she keeps playing with Casey, hopefully one day soon she will straighten up and appreciate what she has. This particular plot was exciting and emotional at the same time. I highly recommend this series as a whole to anyone who enjoys a thriller with a great core group of investigators.

This is supposed to be Casey’s last case. The killer is recreating past cases that the team has worked. When Sheriff Flynn’s past is brought into the present, Casey and Jericho know they need to put an end to it all.

It was easy to get sucked into this story. I needed to know who the latest serial killer was and why we were reliving previous murders. It’s also helpful that these books aren’t overly lengthy, it makes it easy to read them all in one day.

Detective Casey White is getting addictive to me. I definitely need to go back to the beginning of this series and catch up on the books that I haven’t read yet.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy of this book.

I love this series, it’s one of my favourites EVER. The last few chapters were a whirlwind and I loved them but I just wish that they maybe spoke to the murderer a bit longer/interviewed them.

I wanted to know why he chose those particular girls and those murders to copy, didn’t he feel bad for their parents too?

Also, I’m so happy Tracy finally called her Mom, my eyes were watering. I feel like I’ve been waiting an eternity for that.

I never wanted this series to end and wish every book was longer. I’m guessing that wasn’t the end of the series, it didn’t feel like a definitive ending anyway.

I absolutely loved this book! I was captivated from the very beginning and finished it in just two days. It would have been even faster, but unfortunately, adult responsibilities intervened....

I didn't realize this was part of a series, and now I can't wait to read the others. Filled with suspense, murder, bomb threats, and more, this fast-paced mystery kept me glued to my Kindle. It was the perfect summer read!

I am like pretty sure this is finally the last book of the series—it was actually pretty amazing and I really enjoyed it. However it was very slow at first and put me into another massive reading slump, but the storyline does it get pretty good from the other books. Not my personal favorite in the series, but I did really like how gruesome this book was from the other ones. I also like how the storyline circled back to books from quite a while ago in the series and came up with a twisty and surprising ending. Beautifully written as always!

It's supposed to be her last case. But it doesn't take long before Casey realizes this murder is eerily similar to a previous case. As more murders which are similar to previous cases happen, the horror increases. These cases hit home for Casey and Jericho and the closer they get to solving them, the more danger they will encounter. There are heart-stopping moments, lots of emotions and a surprising ending. Loved this story.

Love, love, loved it! Somebody is copying old murder cases, but why? Detective Casey White, for some unknown reason seems to be target. Her team thinks she’s crazy but as the book progresses, we know she’s right and not the only target. This was my first encounter with this author and the series. It’s definitely not my last. Shadow on Her Grave is a tense, gripping, heart stopping thriller that I found I couldn’t put down. I will absolutely be reading all of the previous books in the series.

Another very good, well written read book 13 in the Casey White series. It starts at a fast pace with the discovery of the body of a young woman. I like the plotting and the developing characterisation, especially Tracy. It is quite an intense read, full of twists and very personal for Casey, as she is soon to be married. I really enjoyed the read and recommend the series to lovers of time thrillers. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

Another fantastic story!

I got hooked on this series from the beginning, and I can't wait for the next release! There has been a lot of changes, emotional turmoil, heartbreaking situations, as well as crazy antics, humor, and so much love that has created this unconventional family. It's a fantastic series that I really hope will have many more stories.
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
