Being Heard is Only the Beginning

Korvo, Merin, Bryce, and Tiernan have permission to open a school for Magics in Kaybrum, but the work is only beginning. The right to learn didn’t come with books or teachers or funding, and putting a school where a correctional facility used to be brings its own challenges and trauma.

The more they learn about the Refuge, the more atrocities they discover. When Bryce finds a grave on the property, Korvo is pushed to his limits. Aer is gone, and the man behind it all, the General, is still out there. Craving justice and revenge, Korvo leaves to hunt down the General. Without Korvo to lead the school, Bryce and Merin must step up and care for all the students still grappling with their newly tolerated magic.

As their found family spreads across the continent, they’ll have to learn to be as strong individually as they are together before the progress they’ve made slips away. But the continent has been fighting for years, and all-out-war is one misstep away.

A powerful and poignant continuation of In the Cards, Out of Fire picks up in the aftermath of tragedy, where grief and responsibility weigh heavily on our favourite characters. The emotional fallout from Aer’s death hangs like a shadow—especially over Korvo, whose pain runs deeper than he lets on. She wasn’t just a friend. She was everything.

Now, with the Refuge closed and countless children left orphaned, the dream of building a school for magics begins to take shape—but it’s no easy task. The land itself is haunted by its past, and the truth buried there is darker than anyone expected. Kor’s slow spiral, Bryce and Merin’s growth, the emergence of new allies, and the ever-looming threat of old enemies—it all makes for an emotionally layered and gripping read.

What stands out most is the storytelling. Bray masterfully blends action, introspection, and world-building in a way that feels immersive and weighty. The stakes are high—not just for the continent on the brink of war, but for this found family trying to hold everything together.

Out of Fire is thought-provoking and character-driven, with moments of hope woven through the heartbreak. It doesn’t shy away from difficult questions about justice, trauma, and healing, and that’s exactly what makes it such a rewarding read.

Fans of the first book will be swept right back into this rich, complex world. And if you weren’t already in love with Kor… this one might just break you a little.

Out of Fire is the second book of the The Kaybrum Chronicles series.
The story continues on from In The Cards ended.
The chapters are told from the perspective of the different characters: Korvo, Merin, Bryce, Hayden and Tiernan.
The Refuge where state sanctioned experimentations were performed on Magics is to be turned into a School.
For years, the authorities tried to find ways to control magical abilities, to find the on-off switch.
The inhumane experiments themselves left indelible marked on those who survived the treatments.
The Magics were not looked upon as humans.
In a landmark court case, the only way to determine if a Magic was human was to see if he reacted like humans did. To see if he bled and died like humans did. A Magic consented to this test and thereafter the law was enacted that being human superseded the ability to use magic. Only then did it become law that people could only be punished for acts done rather than abilities or identities.

I found the story-telling poignant albeit morose and foreboding.
The book is long and at times the massage is lost in the unwieldy narrative.
The message is strong and is pertinent & relevant to our own situation & reality.

Fundamentally the book is about the fight for equality, and freedom from persecution.

Out of Fire instantly became one of my favourite books and I absolutely loved diving more into the story with Emily's vivid world and character building, leaving me completely immersed. I curled up on the couch and ended up reading for hours without realising it. The story was more played out like a film in my head, making the reading experience that extra step special.

While In the Cards did a great job of introducing the characters and the world of Kaybrum, I found myself enjoying the 2nd book a lot more. The pacing and character/story development really pulled me in from the start. From subtle hints of possible connections between two characters, and tension/clashing between others, just added another layer of depth to the story.

Overall, Out of Fire was such an immersive and captivating read, great for anyone who enjoys fantasy books, with great character and world-building elements. I can't wait to see what Emily writes next!

A thrilling continuation of *In the Cards*, *Out of Fire* picks up right where the first book leaves off, pulling readers back into its emotional and action-packed world. With the same great characters, epic journeys, and fierce battles, this sequel delivers a captivating mix of heart and adventure. If you loved the first book, this one won’t disappoint!

So much drama and intrigue is going on in the second book as everyone is dealing with what happened in the last book and finally getting their school. But of course things are not exactly good for the magic users in town and there is a lot going on. Plus there is the General issue too. Liked the story.
