Get ready for a high-stakes game. The players include billionaires, royals, spies, athletes, and criminals. Money, love, and life are on the line. And the winner is …
Blake I’m laser-focused on my goal. No one will stop me this time. At least that’s what I thought before Brianna showed up. Her body is toned to perfection. Her beauty is effervescent. Her allure is undeniable. I’ll never forget the glorious night we spent together two years ago. Afterward, we agreed to never cross that line again. It would make our lives too complicated. But now that she’s here, I’m consumed with the need to pull her against me and recreate those passionate, steamy nights. She’s a distraction I don’t need, but I crave her. If I’m not careful, she’s going to ruin everything.
Briana When I trained to spy for my country, I never dreamed my first real mission would target the hot, handsome man who cherished my body for a blissful night. I knew we only had the one time. But even if I’d dreamed of a repeat, that’s impossible now. Blake is suspected of an international crime, so he’s completely off limits to a titled billionaire like me. The problem? My body didn’t get the message. When we’re near each other, a magnetic pull draws me to him, and an almost uncontrollable desire pulses through me. I’m screwed.
Welcome to the world of Royal Spies where intrigue and unexpected turns lead to happily-ever-afters.
When not consumed by her job as an attorney, J.D. Carothers loves to cook for her family and friends, read murder mysteries and romance novels, eat chocolate, and sip wine watching the sunset in Southern California.
Late at night or early on weekend mornings, she tries to find a quiet place to write her next novel and trade the stress of real life for a fantasy world where murder and romance are on the menu, along with the food she loves.
She just wishes there were more hours in each day!
This was such a fun little suspenseful sports romance! I loved that it was taking place outside the US AND it was about tennis, highlighting a different sport and culture than I am used to. Add in the Royal element and I was hooked.
This was a quick read and I really enjoyed the chemistry between Blake & Briana. They were a one night stand but went their separate ways 2 years ago, only to now be forced together to play Doubles Tennis at Wimbledon. It's not what either of them want. Blake because his sponsor is strong-arming him into the pairing and Blake because she has a secret royal spy mission. A mission where Blake is her focus. So, he's not only forbidden because it could be bad for their matches, but he could also be a criminal! The intrigue was top notch.
They are now living, training, and flirting in close quarters, all while Briana is trying to resist Blake's allure as she tries to uncover any crimes he may be committing. She needs him close but if he's too close, she may lose her heart.
The critique I have for this one is about how Blake reacts in multiple situations in this novel. I know he is struggling with panic attacks, but even when he's not having one, he kinda throws tantrums like a diva. I mean, Briana is a princess and she doesn't whine as much as Blake!
Overall, this was a fun, quick listen and I enjoyed myself. Even if, I did roll my eyes at Blake a few times.
This was narrated in the Dual style by James Joseph & Stephanie Nemeth-Parker. They were wonderful to listen to.
• Tennis romance • Romantic suspense • Royal romance • Grumpy x sunshine • Yearning after years apart • Panic attack reps
The opening to this book instantly had me hooked! The chemistry between these two characters was immediate, and I absolutely loved the way he spoke to her and worshipped her the first night they were together. This man was as hooked on Brianna as I was on J.D.’s writing! The two year time jump couldn’t have been done any better. The yearning that came with the time they spent apart was so perfectly written, and I loved the way J.D. brought these two back into each other’s lives.
Tennis isn’t a sport we often get to see in romance, and having both characters become partners while going after the same goal was so well done, all while J.D. wove a little bit of romantic suspense into the story.
I can’t wait to read more from J.D. I loved her writing so much. It was the perfect balance of romance with mild suspense sprinkled in!
🎧Audiobook Review🎧 Dual narration Narrated by James Joseph & Stephanie Nemeth-Parker
I have been a long time fan of both of these narrators, so when I saw they were doing this book together, I ran for the opportunity to listen as quickly as I could. Stephanie always nails every performance she does, but my favorites are always when she gets to narrate strong FMCs, and Brianna was definitely that. Given a task she had to follow through on, even with her growing connection to Blake, Stephanie brought her character to life so perfectly. I run to every book James does, and that’s not me exaggerating. His performance as Blake was incredible; he captured every grumpy, yearning part of Blake’s character. I loved every second. And the way these two sound together couldn’t have been more perfect for Brianna and Blake!
🎙️The dual narration by 🎤James Joseph & Stephanie Nemeth-Parker🎤 was incredibly delightful! Their voices worked seamlessly together, and both have incredible range and versatility in their voices! 👏👏Excellent listening experience!👏👏 I got the chance to *read* this story just last September (2025) and I loved this story very much and listening to it made me love it even more! So much so, that I felt like this was the very first time I’d experienced the story! When narrators work as well as these two did, it’s a whole other level of experience. This audiobook is one I can say with certainty that if you get the chance to pick your format, this is the way to go! #trust
📚STORY REVIEW📚
I love reading “sports” romances that are “off the beaten path” such as this one. You don’t see a whole lot of books where the sport is tennis so that was much appreciated by me and added freshness to the story for me.
I love that the main characters had an instant connection, but their romance was not insta. It allowed the story to be captivating from the start but also keeps you invested throughout. I loved that the main characters were opposites, of sorts, but exactly what each needed. I loved their meet-cute & re meet-cute very much and set-up the story really well. It was pure kismet!
The flow and progression of the story felt very much like it would happen in real life. I mean it’s not like I’m royalty or have ever been part of a high stakes sports match, but it all read very natural and relatable. Sometimes, with stories involving royals and celebrities, it can get a bit OTT, but everything I’ve read by this author has yet to be that way and I really enjoy it.
The ”mystery” behind the story ran seamlessly along the “romance” neither really outshining the other in the end. I like a well-balanced story, and Risky Match was that and so much more. I cannot wait to find out who will be narrating this story and have it in my ears ASAP!
Risky Match is the 1st book in the Royal Spies series. This was my first tennis romance, and I really enjoyed reading a different sports romance. This is a perfect mix of tennis, billionaires, royalty, and spies.
Briana is a princess, who also plays pro tennis when her royal duties don’t get in the way. She is thrilled to finally be playing at Wimbledon, but the only way she can is if she plays doubles with Blake. Blake is hoping this year he will finally bring home the win, so he is not happy about the distraction. He has a lot of pressure to win, but he can't say no to Brianna. They shared an amazing night together 2 years ago and he never forgot her.
Briana is there on a mission as a spy for her country and she has to get close to Blake because he is the main suspect. She can't believe he is responsible for the crime and feels guilty as she investigates him. The closer she gets to him the more she falls for him.
I loved how Blake and Briana really bonded over their sport and supported each other. I saw some of the twists coming, but it was still enjoyable.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
🎤Dual narration by James Joseph & Stephanie Nemeth-Parker
James Joseph and Stephanie Nemeth-Parker did a great job voicing all the characters. I love listening to British accents. Stephanie was amazing at speaking Italian too. I listened to this in one sitting and would definitely recommend the audio.
Thank you to Must Love Audio for providing the ALC and the author for sending me a copy of the book.
Risky Match is my first read by JD Carothers and definitely won’t be my last! I am excited to read more books, as they release, in this series.
Tennis romance Secrets and spies Second chance Secret identity Grumpy x sunshine
Blake is an all star tennis player just waiting for the moment where he finally wins his first Wimbledon. Brianna is a princess, but also a tennis player, who is dying for her shot to play at Wimbledon. The stars align for them when they are paired together for mixed doubles. And after not seeing one another for two years, the sparks start flying once again.
This book was totally unexpected in the best way! Blake was a lot grumpier than I had expected, but the depth of his character totally explains why he is the way he is. And I loved him so much for it.
Brianna’s position starts as a job, but I really enjoyed seeing her fall for Blake, even when she knew that it wouldn’t end up great for her.
Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and James Joseph did a great job narrating! I loved both of their accents in this one and it totally had me hooked!
This book was such a fun story with quite the mix of tropes! From a royal romance, to sports, a secret identity, and suspense, this book really had it all! I loved the tension between the MCs, it was really off the pages! The plot was so creative and unlike anything I’ve read before which was so fun! The organization the royals created for any child that wasn’t the “heir” was fantastic and such a cool idea! I’m really wondering if this is true…. 😂 the FMC may be a royal and a princess but she wants to be a world class tennis player and refuses to allow her name or status influence it. I loved watching her put in the work and doing everything she could to earn everything she won while also being a badass spy on the side!
• THOUGHTS: I enjoyed this story! I really enjoyed the suspense aspect that JD puts in her books. I loved that this was about a sport I knew nothing about. Blake was an absolute grump, but it totally worked for his character as you dive farther into the story. Bri is a freaking sweet and salty, but I loved her. and her salty is a good thing. lol Her patience with Blake, while he works through his issues, really highlights how good of a person she is but also how well those two fit. They have chemistry right off the bat and have an unspoken connection that is a treat to read. The only flaw that I struggled with was how quickly everything wrapped up. I would have loved more drama. Not with the .In characters but with the suspense part of the book. but aside from this, I really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to more of this series.
Narrator Thoughts: Dual Narration at 1.7x Narrators: Stephanie Nemeth-Parker & James Joseph Oh these two are fantastic narrators!!! they both did an amazing job and bringing Bri and Blake to life! I loved their performances and the pairing so much! Reading Rusky Match was a treat! but listening was a whole experience! i am so looking forward to the reat of this series.
Risky Match by J.D. Carothers is the first book in the royal spies series and one of my first tennis romances! This was such a fun read that truly had it all: tennis scenes, undercover spies, royalty characters, billionaires, and more. We follow Briana, a princess who plays pro tennis. her dream is to be able to play at Wimbledon and when her moment arrives, it comes with a catch. She has to play mixed doubles with Blake, the world's #2 tennis player who is hoping to find Wimbledon in singles after many failed years. Forced into this partnership, Blake is very reluctant but he can't say no to Briana, who he has an intimate past with.
Tasked with her spy mission during the tournament, Briana has to get closer to Blake as he is one of the suspects and is assigned to investigate him. As Briana and Blake begin practicing together, walls begin to crumble and they fall head over heels for each other. The spy scenes kept me filled with anticipation and I loved the relationship that Briana and Blake formed based on vulnerability. James Joseph and Stephanie Nemeth-Parker narrate the audiobook and do a phenomenal job! Their British accents were perfect and just elevated the entire listening experience!
Thank you to Must Love Audio for the ALC and to J.D. Carothers for sending me a finished copy of the book! I can't wait to see what happens next in Flawed Match, coming soon! 🎾🪻💜
5 Star Review Risky Match (Royal Spies #1) by J D Carothers
eBook/Audio This is Blake and Brianna’s second chance at love story and one that ticked all the boxes for me.
From the first chapter to the last I was drawn into their story. This book was an entertaining read with a good balance of suspense and romance. In fact I was on the edge of my seat whilst reading.
I liked the characters both separately and especially as a couple and the story was engaging.
The narration by Stephanie Nemeth-Parker & James Joseph brought the characters to life for me. Their voices were easy to listen too and they brought all the passion, drama, romance and suspense to their performances.
I voluntarily listened and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“You’re the sunshine in my day even when it’s raining. You make me a better person.”
A royal. A spy. A tennis pro. A mission. This high stakes game is worth more than a trophy. Move over 007, Princess Brianna has arrived. Her dream has always been to play Wimbledon and now she gets the chance. The only problem? It’s for a job, pairing her with a man she has sizzling chemistry with, who she spent one glorious night with two years ago. Blake has another chance to complete that long awaited goal, but it may not be the way he envisioned. These two will embark on a journey neither saw coming. One full of mystery, intriguing, and passion. This was a fun and different take on sports romance.
Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and James Joseph perform in dual narration and let me tell you, I’m a sucker for those accents.
4.5 Stars! Fun and suspenseful sports-royalty-spy romance!
I’ve never read a sports romance that featured tennis before so this was a nice, fun change. The fact that the story had a mix of romance, sports (tennis), billionaires, royalty, and spies made for an interesting read!
Risky Match is book #1 in the Royal Spies series. Blake is a star tennis player waiting for his big moment at Wimbledon. Briana is a princess, but also a tennis player when not attending to her royal duties.
Our two MCs originally met 2 years previously where they had a one-night stand. Afterwards, they both went their separate ways, never intending to see each other again. Two years later and they are pushed together to play Doubles at Wimbledon. To make matters even more complicated, Bri is tasked to spy for her country. Her next target, Blake of course 🤭 as he is a suspect of an international crime. In order to do her job, she has to get super close to Blake. Trying to resist Blake may be harder than Briana thought!
This was such a fun and quick read. Blake and Briana had great chemistry. Their connection was instant, though I enjoyed how the romance still had build up. I also enjoyed the suspenseful, ‘spy-filled’ moments throughout the book. My favourite part of the book was definitely Bri and Blake and how well they supported each other. Overall, a well thought out and executed book.
Duet narration provided by Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and James Joseph, both did amazing work. They worked very well together, and their voice blended so well together. Joseph was excellent with capturing the grumpiness but still endearing nature of Blake. Whilst Nemeth-Parker was just wonderful with her portrayal of the strong but sweet personality that Briana had. I had such a great listening experience!
Thanks to the author, J.D. Carothers, and the team at HomeCooked Books for providing me with an advanced audio review copy of this book. All opinions provided in this review are entirely my own.
*Audiobook Review* This one was fun. Royal Spies, insta-like, and professional tennis players. Nothing like I've ever read before. Dual narration by Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and James Joseph. Great job.
I previously read and loved this story. The audiobook is fantastic and creates a whole new experience to enjoy the story.
Stephanie Nemeth Parker and Jen’s Joseph were fabulous as narrators. They brought the characters to life with their voices filled with emotion and personality. Great Listen!
Another fantastic suspense filled, romance from JD Carothers! So many amazing tropes - sports, suspense, royals, billionaire and many more. Bri and Blake are quite the pair…they have more in common than they realized during a quick fling they had a couple of years ago. They didn’t expect to cross paths again…or at least in the way they do. Bri’s strong, fiesty and determined to do things her way. Blake is a little more laid back but also is determined to get what he wants. They work together to try to resolve the mystery around them. Their banter, chemistry and overall relationship is fantastic…full of laughs, tender moments and a great HEA. Looking forward to the other books in this series.
Excellent Story Narration🎧Intriguing New Series! 4.5 Stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Risky Match Royal Spies, Book 1 By: J.D. Carothers Narrated by: Stephanie Nemeth-Parker, James Joseph
J.D. Carothers pens another intriguing story and start to her new “Royal Spies” series, a fast-moving story that captures your attention right from the start and holds it captive straight to the end. Blake is a professional tennis player whose biggest goal is to win at Wimbledon. He gets invited to a party held for the winners, despite not winning, and he meets Brianna, a royal princess who also plays tennis, and would love to play at Wimbledon one day. The two hit it off that night and wind up spending the night together, a steamy night. Several years later, they are paired together to play doubles at Wimbledon, even though Blake is a singles player, but his pairing with a princess will make him look good for his sponsors. Brianna finally gets to play at Wimbledon, but under different circumstances than she ever imagined, working a case and putting all her training as a royal spy to use. Brianna is trying to solve the case while trying to figure out what Blake’s involvement is in it. This is a cleverly plotted story with the perfect balance of drama, angst, mystery, romantic suspense, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. Carothers keeps you guessing at what is going on and who is behind it, laying down pieces of the puzzle as the story goes on. I love the whole concept of the Royal Spies, it is unique and original, and I am looking forward to what comes next for them. Thank you for this wonderful story and wild ride.
🎧📚🎧 Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and James Joseph are a perfect pairing and cast to bring these characters to life, and they did an amazing job voicing each one. I loved how they owned their roles, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. Both nailed it in the two lead roles, embodying their character’s personality completely, and they were just as fantastic performing the roles of the secondary/side characters too. Shout out to Stephanie Nemeth-Parker’s English accent and nailing it as Princess Brianna, fierce and confident. Joseph was just as fabulous as Blake, playing the ideal grump that he was. They set the right tone for the story, conveyed all the characters’ emotions in their performance and had you feeling each one. These talented voice artists are entertaining storytellers, and their captivating performance rivets you to the story.
I haven’t read many tennis romances, so this one felt fresh and fun! 🎾
Blake has a long-running curse at Wimbledon—something always goes wrong. After losing in the finals, he reluctantly attends the after-party… where he runs into Princess Brianna of Catalinius. Bri also plays tennis, but royal duties keep her from competing the way she wants, including ever qualifying for Wimbledon. Sparks fly instantly, one dance turns into hours of flirting, and the night ends with gelato, champagne, and some unforgettable heat. But it’s only meant to be one night.
Fast-forward two years: Blake arrives early in London to prepare for another shot at the trophy, determined and supported by his doctor who helps manage his anxiety. Just when everything feels on track, he’s told his sponsors are requiring him to play in mixed doubles—no choice unless he wants to risk losing the sponsorship. He refuses to ask who his partner is, terrified of losing focus on singles.
Meanwhile, Brianna learns she was finally accepted into mixed doubles at Wimbledon—her lifelong dream. That excitement shatters when she’s assigned a partner… Blake. On top of that, there’s a scandal brewing: someone is stealing and illegally selling coins from different nations, and Blake is a suspect. The suspense part adds the drama of Bri into it because she’s helping spy on Blake to see if she connect him to the coins. Bri wants to believe the best, but the betrayal stings when she remembers the night they shared.
When she arrives, Blake is stunned—he had no idea Bri was his partner. Despite the distraction, he promises to give his all to help her win.
I did figure out the coin-heist mystery pretty early, but JD Carothers still managed to shock me with a major twist at the end. And the audiobook? SO good. James Joseph’s British accent was perfection, and Stephanie Nemeth-Parker brought every side character to life.
Tropes • Royals • Sports (Tennis) • Suspense / light mystery • Forced proximity • One-night stand → Second chance
✨ A huge thank you to J.D. Carothers and Home Cooked Books Promotion for the early audio copy in exchange for honest review! ✨
I did not know how much I needed a second-chance, royal-spy romance until I listened to this! This book is pure ADDICTION. Blake and Brianna are total fire, and the high-stakes plot had me white-knuckling my earbuds! They had one unforgettable, passionate night two years ago, and now, they are thrust back together in the middle of an international incident. Blake is a skilled operative, but he's also suspect... making him completely OFF LIMITS to Brianna, the titled billionaire he can't stop craving.
The tension of them fighting their magnetic pull while trying to navigate crime, secrets, and an undeniable attraction is delicious. Every touch, every guarded glance, every forbidden moment was just chef's kiss perfection. 🤌🏻💋 If you love a hero who is rugged, focused, and utterly undone by the one woman he shouldn't touch, GET THIS BOOK! 💯
🎙️ THE NARRATION IS AUDIO GOLD! This is why we listen to audiobooks, people! Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and James Joseph are an A-LIST DREAM TEAM for this pair.
James Joseph delivers that perfect, deep, controlled voice that makes Blake the ultimate broody, sexy operative. Seriously, his voice should come with a warning label! 🥵
Stephanie Nemeth-Parker perfectly nails Brianna’s elegance as a royal figure while injecting that desperate, needy vulnerability she hides beneath the surface.
They keeps the pace flying, and their combined performance brings the intensity and chemistry to life in your headphones. Their voices fit the forbidden, high-stakes vibe perfectly!
If you need a fast-paced, action-packed, steamy romance with a royal twist and a truly irresistible hero, this is your next listen. Highly, highly recommend! 👑🖤
This is the first book in JD Carother’s new Royal Spies series and it was really great! I can’t wait for the future books!! I read the description for this book and I was like “cool, spies and suspense!” And then the first several chapters were about tennis and I was like “what? I thought this was about spies!” and then went back to Amazon to read the description. I like sports romance and have only ever read one other tennis based story so I wasn’t opposed to it, I just thought it was something different. In the end it was about spies and it was a great story!
MMC Blake and FMC Briana, who is a real life princess, are both tennis pros who meet at a gala event at Wimbledon and have an amazing night together. Until they met each other neither wanted to be at the gala and was looking for the first opportunity to exit the event. The story then skips a ahead a bit and we find out that not only is Briana a princess, she is also a trained royal operative. Briana has been trying to make it to Wimbledon as a player for years, and Blake has played at Wimbledon, but something tragic always happens and he either doesn’t get to play or doesn’t make it far. This time he’s not letting anything stop him and he’s got a team of psychologists, trainers, and coaches to get him to the championship. Briana has never been invited to Wimbledon, because while she’s a good tennis player, due to her royal duties she is unable to play as many tournaments as are required to secure an invitation. She finally gets her invitation, but it is for mixed doubles, not singles, and it comes with a mission. She finds out she did get invited for singles, but due to her job with the royal spies, they change her invite to doubles so she can be paired with Blake and investigate a coin smuggling operation. This was a terrific story! I was anxious to get time when I could listen to it. James Joseph and Stephanie Nemeth Parker did an exceptional job with the narration. Both voiced multiple characters with distinctive voices and personalities. I can’t say that I guessed the bad guy, but I knew all along it wasn’t Blake!
Rating: 4.5/5 I received an eARC for my honest opinion
This book was so much fun! I didn’t get the chance to post on release day, but now, I can’t wait to share my thoughts on this fast-paced sports romance filled with royals, spies, high-stakes drama, and sizzling chemistry.
We meet Blake, a driven tennis player with his eyes set on winning the Wimpleton Tournament in singles. He has no interest in doubles—until his manager tells him he’ll be playing both. To his shock, his doubles partner turns out to be none other than Princess Brianna. Two years earlier, Blake and Brianna shared one unforgettable night together at a tournament afterparty, but parted ways without looking back.
Now Brianna is not only a princess and talented tennis player, but also a royal spy with an assignment that puts Blake in her crosshairs. The problem? She can’t reconcile her mission with the man she knows Blake to be—and her heart keeps pulling her closer to him.
I devoured this book in one sitting. Brianna is the kind of heroine I wish were real—I’d want her as a friend. She’s loyal, kind, hardworking, and fearless, balancing her duties as both a royal and an athlete while questioning everything that doesn’t add up. Blake completely won me over too—he’s determined, thoughtful, and vulnerable, with moments that show his struggles with anxiety in such a real way. Their chemistry? Absolute fire. That hot tub scene had me on the edge of my seat—they’re not just attracted to each other, they’re magnetic.
The spy elements were woven in seamlessly, adding intrigue without overshadowing the romance. Expect twists, betrayal, danger, and a romance that keeps you hooked all the way through. By the end, I was wishing the next book in the series was already out.
Thank you to Literary Media Tours and the author for the opportunity to review this book.
Brianna is the royal princess that happens to be a professional tennis player. The dream of making it into Wimbledon was always there and when she finds out that she qualified to play in the doubles match, she is ecstatic. But finding out that her time in Wimbledon will come with strings and a royal assignment she was anticipating, her motives are doubled. When she learns that she has to secretly investigate Blake, her doubles partner and her past fling, it only complicates things further as she navigates how to handle her feelings mixed with her duties. Blake is one of the best professional tennis players in the league so this is not his first run in Wimbledon, but finding out that he also is signed up for doubles is not in his plan. When he discovers that his doubles partner is Brianna, he decides to give in for her sake. Their past chemistry is still as bright as ever, fielding a barrage of conflicting emotions between desire and duty. As the investigation intensifies so do their feelings, and when secrets are revealed it puts their budding relationship to the test in ways neither of them imagined. I enjoyed this story and getting back into these characters and this world was fun! Seeing a romance based around spies, suspense, mystery and professional tennis is unique and a great change of pace from some of the same storylines we see time and again. JD Carothers always seems to write unique storylines that keep things interesting and I am excited to see where this series takes us! Stephanie and James delivered wonderful performances that captured the story and characters so well. Both have been in the game for a while and I love both of them, but together was a fantastic experience as well!
If you love suspense, excitement, sizzling chemistry and competitive tennis then this book is it. This was another well written book by J.D Carothers, the plot was interesting and definitely captured my attention. Brianna was the ultimate cool FMC, a tennis playing princess who was also a secret royal spy, I mean can it get better than that. Brianna was excited to be on her first major mission, however, when she realised her target was someone she had had a past one night stand with, things got complicated. She had handled herself wonderfully as an undercover agent, she was smart , poise and got the job done. Blake, the tennis star, was struggling with issues which had been affecting his game. When he is forced to play doubles with Brianna at Wimbledon, he is surprised how much he is still attracted to her and how much she calms him and helps center him to play better. The chemistry between these two is sizzling and as much as they tried to keep it professional it was hard. The first half of the book was a bit slow for me but definitely picked up in the second half. I honestly did not appreciate Blake's character, I understood he was going through a hard time however his rudeness and gruff attitude towards everyone, especially Brianna was a bit too much and unnecessary. Also, I found the ending was abrupt and I would have liked some more action, as everything was resolved so easily and quickly. Overrall it was an enjoyable book and I am looking forward to the others in the series.
In the high-stakes world of international tennis, a chance encounter at a Wimbledon awards dinner leads British champion Blake Knight and Princess Briana of Catalinus, to share a passionate one-night stand. Now two years on Briana has returned to the hallowed courts, this time as a player partnered in the mixed doubles with Blake. But what Blake doesn’t know is that Briana leads a double life as a spy, part of an elite team of royal espionage agents who are hot on the trail of a gang of international smuggling ring. But it isn’t just fate that has brought them together on the court, Blake is the prime suspect.
I enjoyed the mystery and suspense in this book, the whole the smuggling racket – no pun intended. Although elements of the plot and guilty culprits were slightly predictable, the story as a whole was engaging and easy to follow, setting a steady pace as Briana and Blake struggled to keep their relationship strictly platonic. I don't think James Bond has much to worry about, Jane Bond Brianna definitely ain’t but then again, her parents obviously wouldn’t let her participate in anything too risky, she still managed to get into some hairy situations. Meanwhile, there was a sub story involving Blake which added depth to his character with his struggles with panic attacks and the pressure to win on his home turf, which showed a less glamorous side of the sport. I did enjoy the concept of a team of Royal spies who can move about in society without arousing suspicion, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this series plays out.
Risky Match is such a fun and unexpected mix… pro tennis meets espionage with a royal twist. 🎾👑
This story follows Blake, a grumpy, determined professional tennis player laser-focused on winning Wimbledon, and Princess Brianna, a royal with a secret life as a spy. Years ago, one magical night brought them together, but duty and distance tore them apart. Now, fate throws them back onto the same court literally as mixed doubles partners at Wimbledon. Only this time, there’s more at stake than just a trophy. There are secrets, poisons, bugs, royal plots, and sparks flying in every direction.
Risky Match balanced romantic tension and high-stakes intrigue. You’ve got steamy chemistry, undercover missions, and a second-chance romance that feels both thrilling and heartfelt. The grumpy-sunshine energy between Blake and Brianna was perfection.
Now, let’s talk about the audiobook… absolutely phenomenal. Stephanie Nemeth-Parker nails Brianna’s British accent and effortlessly captures her strength, wit, and vulnerability. James Joseph embodies Blake with that perfect mix of intensity and quiet emotion, making his internal struggles especially his moments of anxiety feel real and relatable. Together, they’re a dream team. Their chemistry, pacing, and emotional delivery pull you straight into the story and don’t let go.
Risky Match is an addictive start to a new series full of secrets, passion, and unexpected twists. I’m already counting down to book two because if this is how the Royal Spies universe begins, we’re in for one wild, romantic ride.
Risky Match is the 1st book in the Royal Spies series and is a mystery/spy, royal, sports romance featuring tennis. Briana is a princess who plays pro-level tennis when she can balance it with her royal duties. Blake is a tennis pro struggling with anxiety who really hopes this will be his year at Wimbledon. Their magical night together 2 years ago notwithstanding, when they are paired up as doubles they are both determined to do their best to focus on the win. While they are fighting a very strong attraction to each other, they are gaining respect and true admiration as they progress through the tournament. Blake is fighting some demons and Bri is very patient with him while remaining focused on her duty. Even with the underlying mystery and suspicion, Bri’s undercover assignment can’t overshadow their connection entirely. I enjoyed how the author balanced all of the complexities of this story with the romance, suspense, and underlying fear of failing both in the tournament and in her assignment.
Duet narration by James Joseph and Stephanie Nemeth-Parker really made this story for me, and is the reason is chose to make this my next listen. They are both fantastic performers who really fit together in duet. They both did a wonderful job of bringing all of the characters to life while differentiating who was speaking at any given time and still driving the story and the complex emotions involved. Excellent casting!
Risky Match from JD Carothers bring us a new series of Royal Spies, and this time we combine sports and romance as Princess Briana of Catalonia tries to find the mastermind behind a series of rare coin thefts that seem to be tied to the championship tennis circuit.
Briana and Blake met years ago, and had an instant connection. But now, she finds him a the shortlist of suspects. Her dream of playing at Wimbledon is finally here, but it comes with some serious strings. Blake wants a Wimbledon win more than anything, but it has always eluded him. With Briana by his side, will that dream finally come true? And can they explore that combustible connection again?
I loved that their connection seemed so real and so genuine, and each of them was a port in the storm for the other. Their relationship was not one sided, and they both truly cared and truly heard and saw each other for what they offered, and not for dollar signs or royalty or connections.
The audio, narrated by James Joseph and Stefanie Nemeth-Parker, was a great way to experience this story. Stephanie really captured how torn Briana was by the mere thought of Blake being guilty, and she trusted her gut and never doubted that he was a good guy caught in the middle here. James made Blake's anxiety, his instant connection to Briana, and his desire to help her succeed feel real and heartfelt. All in all, a good listen with heart.

I really enjoyed this story. The gender reversal from traditional roles was very much appreciated. We start off hot and heavy with Blake and Briana engaging in a ONS. Fast forward a couple years and the story starts off with some forced proximity goodness. The underlying suspense is what I would consider to be on the lighter side but it also made the royal spy aspect much more believable so it fits together well.
I, honestly, could have listened to these two narrators talk for hours longer than this book was. Their accents are so beautiful and made listening to this for long stretches a breeze.they both handled the dual-style narration beautifully. I was on a road trip and this audio made it fly by as I was completely lost in the story.
Bonuses: I really enjoyed getting to check in with characters from a previous series. I love a character that’s not afraid to be vulnerable and both Briana and Blake have these very real, relatable moments.
💬 So overall this was an enjoyable, easy read, but nothing really stands out to me. It was especially nice reading a sports romance that wasn't hockey or baseball 😂 and I liked that it was a royal romance too.
The suspense aspect of the story was fairly tame, IMO, but worked well and I thought the author did a good job blending Blake and Brianna's romance in. I didn't really get the chemistry between them though.
I also enjoyed the set up to book two, which I do want to read, but... There were so many epilogues 😅. Honestly Bri and Blake's separate epilogues could have just been wrap up chapters since it was immediately after the conclusion.
Overall I had a good impression of the narrators, and they did a pretty good job of bringing the story to life, but I kinda hated the MMC's attempts at a female voice 🙈
A big thank you to @homecookedbookspromo for a free ALC of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was my first JD Carothers book and it won’t be my last! I had SO MUCH FUN reading this book! It was over the top in the best possible way.
It’s been a hot minute since I signed up for the ALC so when I received it, I read the tropes again but otherwise went in blind. I loved that the tennis star, princess was the well trained spy whose next mission was to investigate the charming tennis star Blake who she had a wild night with two years ago.
Oh Blake. One of my favorite parts of sport romance is when we learn that the overly confident athlete has hidden depth and insecurities. After what I would honestly consider a pretty mediocre night together, I wasn’t super impressed with him. But he definitely redeemed himself and I really appreciated the complexity his panic attack added to his story.
This book has it all! A billionaire, a princess, spies, smuggling, sabotage, betrayals, forced proximity, second chances and professional tennis players. It also required me to suspend all belief and just go along for the ride. And what a ride it was!
The audiobook was fantastic. Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and James Joseph were wonderful as Brianna and Blake.
What a fantastic start to a series! This is my first J.D. Carothers book and will not be my last. Briana is a princess and part time tennis professional. Blake is the number one professional player in England. They meet at an event in Wimbledon and hit it off immediately and have an amazing night together. They know it can only be one night because of her duties and his dedication to his career.
There is much more to this princess than meets the eye. She is also a spy, and they are reunited years later when Blake is the target of her mission. First, I love the fact that the FMC is the bad a$$ spy, and that the backdrop of this story is in the tennis world. It’s a fun spin on the story. The more time these two spend around each other, the more obvious their attraction hasn’t lessened. I enjoyed every bit of their journey.
Dual narration by James Joseph and Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and they were exceptional. They brought this story to a whole other level. James Joseph is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. He’s so good at voicing multiple characters very distinctly and it’s easy to distinguish between them. Stephanie delivered all facets of Bri, from her struggles when choosing between her country and her heart, to her fierce strength. Both were able to jump between accents flawlessly and their voices blended together perfectly.
Overall, this is a fun, quick, story with a mix of romance and suspense. I guessed the bad guy early, but there were still twists and turns I didn’t see coming. The story kept me riveted from start to finish and I can’t wait for the next in the series.
