A review of sorts: The author(s) are very good at staying true to their characters and their characters being true to themselves, which is satisfying. The characters are people, not plot pieces. There is a plot and a story, and that story teases and plays around with the heroic progression but never fully envelops it, or denies it - instead it plays the second layer while the first and dominant layer is the characters and how they deal, reel, and feel. Another major strength is that the author(s) are good at picking and sticking to their themes. The chapter titles are fantastic! Directly following the first book, the second book's first 1/3rd or so is lots of moping and the characters reeling, but once it gets rolling it flows well. If Book 1 was Meep and Beau, Book 2 was Jessie and Kyle.
I picked this up the moment it was released, and I’m honestly kicking myself for not diving into it sooner. This sequel is a masterful continuation of the first book. Every bit as gripping, emotional, and nerve-wracking. B.D.'s storytelling is as immersive as ever, with characters so vividly written I can see the movie playing in my head.
Without giving too much away, but one character's transformation was absolutely brilliant. Even more heartwarming was how the other characters embraced that change with genuine support and positivity. It added a beautiful layer of emotional resonance to an already intense narrative.
I was bracing for a cliffhanger at the end, but I was not prepared for that. Now I'm not so patiently waiting for the next book.
I had the pleasure of reading this early and I loved it even more than book 1. It's got wild worlds and intense characters. The energy is 20/10 and you need to read it!
