Inspired by the indomitable spirit of Audrey Hepburn, this gripping story follows two extraordinary sisters as they reunite after World War II, embarking on a journey of justice, survival, and secrets amid the backdrop of the Red Scare in Hollywood.

A new name, a new country, and a coveted title as Hollywood's newest rising by 1946, actress Ada Worthington-Fox has discarded the life she left in war-torn Arnhem, where she worked for the Dutch resistance before Gestapo imprisonment prompted her to flee after release. But that life is thrust back into the spotlight when Ingrid--the sister she believed dead--shows up on her doorstep.

Politically-minded Ingrid escaped the Nazi invasion of Arnhem and fled to Washington, DC, where she became a private investigator. Now, she has been sent to root out Communist influences in Hollywood. Her Ada Worthington-Fox, the sister she long thought lost to her. Ingrid must hide her true purpose as she shields Ada from sneaky reporters, damaging rumors, and increasing threats, all while fighting to uncover which side her sister is truly on before Ingrid's efforts to help her are too late.

Yet, Ada has her own locating the Gestapo agent who terrorized her hometown and bringing him to justice. But delving into her past would risk alerting the press to a life too personal to expose. As the rising fear of Communism threatens everyone, she turns to her sister, believing Ingrid's ties to Washington may be her only hope for success.

But the connections between Ada's elusive Nazi and Ingrid's Communist witch hunt might be stronger than they realize. Both sisters share the darkest secret of all, one that risks their very lives if ever exposed. As they come closer to identifying Ada's target and as Ingrid's investigation intensifies, they will need to decide what is more justice or safety, keeping silent or taking a stand, and, above all, if their loyalty to one another is worth risking the post-war lives they've fought to build.

A thrilling historical novel that transports readers from the shadows of the Dutch resistance to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

This book was brilliant. Heartbreaking…but brilliant. I can’t recall a book that left such an impact on me and had me thinking about it for hours on end. The tale of two sisters and their journey through war and after…I am speechless. I adored Ada and Ingrid and both their voices. The author was gentle, yet the strength of this story is remarkable. I ate it up and cried at the end.

“When a ballerina takes center stage, she dances with levity and elegance, defying the way her body burns and bleeds, enduring the pain. Masking everything that must remain hidden. Every step and turn influences what the audience perceives and what they conclude,” (p. 1).

“Words are never just talk, never just noise, never just gossip; words hold meaning, sway opinions, prompt action,” (p. 60).

Arnhem in 1940 changes for the worse when it becomes occupied by soldiers. Every citizen is forced to forget their way of life for conformity. Ingrid and Aleida are twin sisters who each end up fleeing the country, but take different paths doing so. Ingrid flees first, leaving Aleida behind. Aleida helps with the resistance before making her own escape.

Now both are living in America and thriving. Both thinking the other sister had not made it out. Not escaped the hell that became their homeland. But both sisters hold secrets and if the wrong people find out - everything they’ve built here is in danger. Should they trust each other?

Aleida now goes by Ada and is a famous actress. Ingrid now reports to a handler and works for the government. And they’re about to reunite.

The story is told through the sister’s POVs and shifts between the 1940’s in Arnhem to 1946 in America. A sweeping, heart-crushing, yet beautiful story of survival, sisterly bonds, and loss.

🎧: Also listened to the audio and recommend it. It was a great listen.

I loved this book. The writing, characters, setting - everything was literally just perfect. A solid read. A fascinating exploration of the Red Scare and Hollywood.

This book was inspired by Audrey Hepburn, whom the author says was her favorite actress growing up. While the story is definitely not about her, some of Audrey's life experiences were used in the story. Twin sisters, Ada (the character inspired by Audrey) & Ingrid live in the Netherlands during WWII and the German Occupation. Ingrid flees to the United States during this time and Ada stays and aids the Dutch resistance. Years after the war and not having heard from each other, Ingrid is assigned to gather information on an up-and-coming Hollywood starlet as to her political views and whether she is part of the Communist party that has infiltrated Hollywood. Ingrid realizes that it is her very sister that she will be investigating. She is ecstatic to know that her sister is alive and can't wait for the reunion between the two sisters, all the while having to stay true to her assignment. While together, she learns of what Ada went through and the atrocities she faced in the hands of a Gestapo SS and police leader (whom their mother brought into their home). This brings in the element of the postwar Nazis who escaped punishment, some at the very hands of the American government giving them immunity for helping to combat communism or aiding in the Space Race. This story had a lot of interesting elements of that time period in history, and I found it to be very enjoyable and full of enlightening information.

Many thanks to NetGalley & Harper Muse for the opportunity to read an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.

The Star Society is a dazzling, powerful historical novel that captures both the shadows of war and the glitter of Hollywood with unforgettable depth. Gabriella Saab brings us the story of Ada and Ingrid—two sisters reunited after believing the other lost to World War II—whose lives collide against the backdrop of the Red Scare, Hollywood glamour, and lingering wartime trauma.

What struck me most was the duality at the heart of this book: the contrast between Ada’s reinvention as a rising starlet and Ingrid’s undercover work as a D.C. investigator sent to uncover communist influence. Their bond is complicated, tender, and unshakably human, even as secrets, suspicion, and danger press in from every side. Saab handles themes of justice, survival, and loyalty with nuance, weaving suspense, emotion, and history into every chapter.

The prose is elegant and immersive, the pacing sharp, and the twists—particularly around the sisters’ shared secret—had me breathless. This is not just a story of Hollywood glitz or postwar politics; it’s about the resilience of women who refuse to be silenced, no matter the cost.

A stunning, cinematic novel that feels both intimate and epic—The Star Society belongs on the shelf of every historical fiction lover.

World War II seems to be a recurring topic in my reading list right now. When I came across The Star Society I was delighted to see that this book also touched on life post WWII with a bonus that it was loosely based on Audrey Hepburn.

I enjoyed learning more about the Red Scare and life through the eyes of these characters.

many thanks and gratitude to NetGalley and Harper Muse Audiobooks for providing me with an early audiobook copy of The Star Society by Gabriella Saab in exchange for my thoughts and honest review.

Ada Worthington-Fox is an actress and rising Hollywood star who has built a new life after escaping the Dutch Resistance and being imprisoned by the Gestapo. however, she is confronted by her past when her sister, Ingrid, whom she had believed to be dead, unexpectedly appears on her doorstep…

this novel is nothing short of captivating! from the plot to the characters, this novel is perfect for readers of historical fiction, romance, political spy thrillers, and family drama. there are so many themes woven within this book that kept me listening and i couldn’t get enough! Saskia Maarleveld is one of my favorite narrators and her narration beautifully captures the emotions and tension between Ada, her sister, and the various other characters within this book; she does a great job distinguishing between various ages and genders, thoughtful of accents and cadence appropriate for each scene.

this is such a a stunning and beautifully written story. i know about the history of old Hollywood and the Red Scare, including the trials, but i didn’t know that the plot of this book would include it. i was pleasantly surprised! i also had little knowledge about its characters, but from the first chapter i couldn’t help but notice Ada’s description and life experiences sounded a lot like Audrey Hepburn. after a quick internet search, it was confirmed that yes, some of Audrey’s biography inspired the author’s creation of Ada and her background. i love that the author note at the end dives a bit deeper into the way the story and characters were written. there’s a lot of history and real-life events that helped shape this novel!

i cannot recommend reading this enough when it’s released. if you can listen, the audiobook is amazing!

The Star Society will be published January 6, 2026.

This was truly an unputdownable book - yet, it was so good I wanted to savor every page, so I forced myself to read it slowly. Simply, I didn’t want it to end.

When WWII breaks out in Europe and the Nazis raid The Netherlands, twins Ingrid and Aleida find themselves at a crossroads. Ingrid decides to risk it all to flee with her fiancée via the resistance and try to escape to America. Aleida, chooses to stay in Holland, Ingrid promises to write when she makes it safely, but a letter never came. Aleida lives under Nazi occupation secretly helping the Dutch Resistance- until her mother decides to start seeing a Nazi and he moves in - Aleida knows she must run. Fast forward to two years after the war, Aleida, now known as Hollywood’s most desired actress Ada Worthington-Fox, is making it big. Meanwhile, Ingrid has settled into her new life in America and works for the government in Washington DC - investigating Communist supporters. Her next assignment: Hollywood. Her target: Ada Worthington Fox - the sister she thought was dead.

There is so much more to this story then what I shared - so many twists and turns, and the book is so well-written and Ada and Ingrid’s story is told perfectly. The perfect mix of history, lies, betrayal, mystery, suspense, drama and excitement. 100% recommend this book to any historical fiction lover.

An Audry Hepburn inspired Hitchchokian historical thriller? Yes, please! THE STAR SOCIETY is an unputdownable dual timeline story of sisterhood, love and how the past comes to haunt us in the most unexpected ways. This sweeping, deeply human, intricate story weaves the themes of loss, betrayal, deadly secrets and the beauty of love. It is an exploration of humanity at its worst and at its best. Saab's prose is deeply atmospheric, nuanced and devastatingly beautiful. While twists keep on coming--and some of them are heartbreaking--you'll fall in love with the sisters and cheer for them until the very last page. And, seriously, who doesn't like old Hollywood glamour even when it's overshadowed by the Red Scare? This book will hold you captive until the end. THE STAR SOCIETY is releasing on January 6, 2026. Pre-order now and start 2026 on the right note.

Listening to The Star Society was my first experience with Gabriella Saab’s work, and I was immediately drawn in by how naturally she blends history, emotion, and character depth. Her atmospheric writing paired with the narrator’s beautiful, perfectly suited delivery made the opening chapters especially captivating.

Saab’s storytelling is immersive and emotionally layered, with rich historical detail and character-driven tension that feels both accessible and deeply affecting. Her writing is thoughtful and grounded in research without ever feeling heavy—she builds the world through both setting and emotion.

I loved the dual threads of sisterhood, secrecy, and post-war reinvention. Ada’s journey was especially compelling—a mix of glamour and danger as she seeks justice for her hometown while concealing the pieces of her past. She embodies resilience, identity-shifting, and the true costs of reinvention. The characters as a whole feel fully realized, carrying their trauma, hope, and complicated loyalties in ways that give the story real emotional pull. The Hollywood backdrop adds a glamorous yet shadowy tone that complemented the narrative well.

There were a few moments where the pacing slowed, particularly in sections heavy on background detail. I found myself wanting certain plot points to move forward a bit quicker, and a few transitions between Europe and America felt slightly abrupt.

The audiobook narrator was absolutely wonderful—her voice was a perfect fit with the tone of the dialogue, and her intonation adds a warmth and emotional clarity that fits the novel effortlessly. She brings out the fear, hope, and resilience in the characters without ever overdramatizing it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Muse Audiobooks for the advance listening copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Star Society by Gabriella Saab
4.25 stars
Publisher: Harper Muse

Plot: In 1946, Ada Worthington-Fox has successfully shed her previous name, but not the memories nor scars from her previous life as a Dutch resistance fighter who escaped war-torn Arnhem after Gestapo imprisonment. She has made a name for herself as a Hollywood star on the big screen. But as questions and investigations hone in on Hollywood and its underground Communist allegiances amid the Red Scare, her sister Ingrid (whom she believed dead) shows up at her doorstep and brings back all that she escaped from.
Ingrid escaped the Nazi invasion of Arnhem years before the horror that Ada had to endure and has been working as a private investigator to smoke out communist influences in Hollywood, when she’s assigned her sister to investigate.

Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book and found it to be similar in writing style to Beatriz Williams and Kate Quinn and those that loved The Goddess Warsaw would love this book. Personally, I would have loved the past timeline to go further in depth and to hear more about what transpired after Ada was forced to give up her fellow resistance fighters as well as how she ended up in Hollywood. However, I still enjoyed this book and am intrigued enough to read more of Gabriella Saab’s backlist and future novels.

Audio: I did try to tandem read between ebook and audiobook (thank you to the publishers for both) and unfortunately, the formatting didn’t allow for the back and forth on formats so I stuck with the audio as I love Saskia’s narrating so much. The audiobook for this novel was phenomenal. But do you expect any different when Saskia Maarleveld is narrating? She is my absolute favourite narrator and lived up to all expectations. I requested this book entirely because of genre and Saskia. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Thanks to my favorite narrator, Saskia Maarleveld, I listened to The Last CheckMate, by Gabriella Saab earlier this year. Chess and historical fiction novels are two of my favorite things, so naturally, I fell in love with that novel. When I saw The Star Society was another book by the same author, and read by Saskia on audio, it rose to the top of my TBR.

As for my thoughts on The Star Society-I loved it! So full of emotion, character development, depth, detail, intrigue, suspense, romance, and heart. I will be eager to read all future books by this author.

This was such an interesting and lovely story. I really liked that it was mostly about post WWII but also acknowledged what happened to the two sisters during the war.

This book was just entertaining to me. I really liked how the story progresses - moving forward with a few flashbacks.

This one is historical fiction with a bit of a mystery element which kept me so engage.

I like hearing about where the inspiration came from.

New favourite author and narrator! I chose this book as I love historical fiction set in Hollywood and I absolutely loved it! The characters are well-developed and complex, the story is well-researched, thought-provoking, entertaining and informative. There are many historical events mentioned, including WWII experiences in Arnhem, Netherlands, and the threat of communism growing in America. Societal expectations and beliefs of the time are also addressed through the characters. You'll want to add this to your list if you enjoy WWII historical fiction, scandal, crime, romance, betrayal - this book has it all! The narration is excellent, and it was easy to keep track of all the characters.

Read this if you love…
🌟 political intrigue
💙 stories about sisters
🎬 Hollywood glamour

Dutch sisters Ada and Ingrid were separated during the war and reunite years later in America. Ada now works as a glamorous Hollywood actress while Ingrid secretly investigates her for Communist ties during the Red Scare!

These stakes were so high and I LOVED the tension! This is probably the closest I’ll get to reading a thriller. While I am a sensitive reader, there was just enough intrigue for me. There is some violence that I would consider a spoiler, so please message me for specific content warnings!

At its core, The Star Society is about sisters. Ada and Ingrid’s relationship felt authentic, and I enjoyed reading from both of their perspectives. This is also a dual timeline novel, so we go back-and-forth between Ada and Ingrid‘s perspectives in the past and the present. I found it easy to follow along. If you like family dramas, you will probably like this.

The romances were clearly not the focus, but I did enjoy the small snippets we got. I do wish some of these romantic side characters were more fleshed out. There is a short fade to black scene towards the end.

All in all, I enjoyed The Star Society and would read other books by this author!

The Star Society delivers a compelling blend of post-WWII grit, sisterhood, and the relentless pursuit of justice. After years of separation, the sisters reunite with one shared mission: track down a fleeing Nazi responsible for devastating war crimes and finally clear their own names.

What makes this story shine is the unexpected—and powerful—support behind them. With Hollywood’s influence and the FBI’s resources, these women step into a dangerous world still reeling from the war. Being a woman in that era means every door is heavier, every truth harder to prove, but their determination never wavers. Their courage, resilience, and loyalty to each other drive the entire novel.

A gripping, emotionally charged read that blends history, suspense, and the unbreakable bond of sisterhood.

I liked this book, but kept getting confused about who was who considering the main characters are twins with multiple names and nicknames. Not that this couldn’t be deciphered, but it would take me out of the storyline more frequently than I liked.

The historical pieces of the plot were interesting and entertaining. As a lover of classic films, I already knew a great deal about this period, the red scare, the Audrey Hepburn crossover, etc. The author did a great job of weaving the facts into her actual narrative.

I listened to this one on audio and thought that it was very well-done. The reader’s male voices always give me a bit of cringe, but I think that’s pretty standard. lol

Renowned author Gabriella Saab, celebrated for her mesmerizing historical fiction, unveils her latest dazzling masterpiece, THE STAR SOCIETY.

Drawing inspiration from the indomitable spirit of Audrey Hepburn, this enthralling narrative unfolds the poignant tale of twin sisters who find themselves reunited in the vibrant yet turbulent landscape of post-World War II Hollywood.

As they navigate a world of glittering allure of fame and the shadowy depths of past traumas, their gripping journey is one of survival, buried secrets, and the relentless pursuit of justice. Each sister embarks on her own intertwining mission, challenging the darkness of their history while contending with the pervasive paranoia of the Red Scare.

In this richly woven saga, the sisters must confront not only their personal demons but also the societal upheavals of their time, making for a riveting exploration of resilience, identity, sisterhood, and the unwavering bonds of family.

About...

THE STAR SOCIETY follows the dual timelines and converging missions of two Dutch sisters, Ada and Ingrid, in the aftermath of WWII.

Inspired by Audrey Hepburn's life with a focus on themes of survival, justice, and the unbreakable bond of sisterhood amid the Red Scare in Hollywood.

Characters:

Ada Worthington-Fox: A former Dutch Resistance member who, after imprisonment by the Gestapo, assumes a new identity and becomes a rising actress in post-war Hollywood.

Ingrid: Ada's politically-minded twin sister, who flees to Washington, D.C. during the war and becomes a private investigator.

The twins reunite in 1946 Hollywood after years of separation, each having believed the other dead.

Ada has reinvented herself as a rising Hollywood star to escape her past as a member of the Dutch Resistance in Arnhem, which included a traumatic Gestapo imprisonment.

Ingrid, who fled to Washington D.C. and became a private investigator, arrives in Hollywood with a secret assignment to root out communist influences, and her primary target is her own sister, Ada, who has become a rising actress under the name Ada Worthington-Fox.

Ada becomes a part of a secret group of friends called "The Star Society," which is named by a gossip columnist who covers their exclusive parties. Both sisters share a dark secret from their time in the war that, if exposed, could destroy their new lives.

As the plot unfolds, the two sisters must navigate the political and social pressures of the Red Scare era while trying to uncover the truth and trust one another, while also fighting corruption.

My Thoughts...

THE STAR SOCIETY is a masterfully crafted work of historical novel that immerses readers in a meticulously researched world, emotionally gripping, brimming with intricately layered characters and vibrant settings. Heartbreaking, an utterly riveting tale of courage, loss, and overcoming impossible odds,

Gabriella Saab cleverly spins a creative retelling that is not only filled with rich historical detail but also interspersed with glamour, danger, intrigue, and sheer courage. The narrative glimmers with entertaining Easter eggs to discover and subtle nods to the iconic Audrey Hepburn and the myriad characters she brought to life on screen.

As the plot progresses, the tension mounts, drawing readers into a suspenseful dance as the sisters hone in on Ada's elusive target. Ingrid's investigation intensifies the stakes, forcing them into a poignant struggle between the pursuit of justice, the desire to safeguard their own lives, the option of remaining silent, or the heartbreaking decision to jeopardize everything for the unbreakable bond of sisterhood.

With its dual timelines, this compelling novel eloquently navigates themes of survival, reinvention, the haunting legacy of war, unwavering loyalty, and the sacrifices made in love—set against the backdrop of post-war Hollywood during the turbulent Red Scare. Each page reveals a world rife with suspicion, where shadows of past secrets linger, creating an atmosphere thick with tension, intrigue, and fear.

The title ultimately functions as a powerful metaphor for the duality of the era: the sparkling veneer of post-war Hollywood contrasted with the dangerous, shadowy world of secrets, survival, and espionage that lies just beneath the surface.

Inspired by the extraordinary life of Audrey Hepburn—whose journey you can delve deeper into within the fascinating Author's Notes—this work elegantly intertwines elements of Hollywood glamour, espionage, and deeply buried family secrets.

The Audiobook...

I had the immense pleasure of not only reading this gripping tale but also listening to the audiobook version narrated by the exceptionally talented, acclaimed Saskia Maarleveld (a favorite). Her performance is nothing short of mesmerizing, as she deftly captures the essence of this dual-timeline historical thriller. Through her voice, the story comes alive, painting a vivid picture of the time, place, and characters while echoing the lingering shadows of war that loom over the glittering expanse of 1940s Hollywood.

I highly recommend the audiobook, as it truly elevates, transforming it into an engaging and immersive listening experience. The skilled narration breathes life into the characters, enhancing the emotional depth and nuances of the plot. Each carefully chosen tone and inflection draws you deeper into the narrative, making it impossible to put down. This format allows for a multi-sensory enjoyment that adds a rich layer to the storytelling, inviting listeners to fully appreciate the author's craft.

This unabridged recording spans an enchanting seven hours and is available for pre-order, set to be released on January 6, 2026.

Recommendations...

4/5 Stars - Captivating
Read December 2025 - ARC

The Star Society is a novel about redemption, forgiveness, and how the past always finds a way to resurface…even if you think you’ve pushed it down far enough.

Positive messages: 3/5
Characters acknowledge the importance words can have; they can heal or break, restore or destroy. Major themes include forgiveness, reconciliation of relationships, and overcoming fear or trauma as a result of past events. Characters lean on each other for support.

Characters
Positive role models: 3/5
Ada is a Hollywood star with a haunting past that she is afraid will resurface. She’s loved by her fans, but does anyone truly know her? Throughout the book she struggles with forgiveness, understanding, and moving past traumatic incidents that have a hold on her.
Ingrid is an investigator, and a good one. She’s smart, bold, and not afraid to speak her mind. She’s overlooked since she’s a woman in a “man’s world” so she has to work twice as hard to get what she wants. Despite this, she speaks out about politics and has strong opinions.
Lars, Ingrid’s husband, is sweet and supportive despite being kept in the dark (by policy) about Ingrid’s work. He trusts her and loves her with everything in him.
Aleida is a ballerina in Arnhem during the war. Ingrid is her twin sister, who she loves dearly and will do anything to keep safe. She, like her sister, is bold (although more forgiving and knows when to keep her mouth shut). She stands up for what is right…even if that means putting her life on the line.
Madame Bellamy is Aleida’s Jewish dance teacher. She is encouraging and uplifting, always willing to put her life and well-being on the line for others’ sake.
Hattie is Ingrid and Aleida’s dear friend from boarding school. She works in the FBI, and is able to help Ingrid out when she needs to find information on those she’s investigating.
Vince is Ada’s past love. When he comes back into her life for a film, their relationship is strained. He doesn’t understand why she left him and blames himself for the breakup. When readers get to know him, they fall in love with his kind, tender, protective heart.
“Mother” (we aren’t given her name as far as I know) is Ingrid and Aleida’s mom. At times it feels like she’s trying to do better—trying to love her girls…but in the end readers will see that she is a very selfish person.
Gordon, Ada’s agent, cares for her very much in a brotherly way.

Wow. Okay.
Ada tries to silence the voices of her past that are creeping up on her. From the beginning readers await the past to resurface and reveal its identity. What was in her past that broke her so badly?
For the first 100 or so pages, this book was fine. I was slightly confused by the different characters and how they related…but that got cleared up. Once the book started to make sense, I was hooked 👌The plot was unique, the characters’ personalities were relatable, and the story as a whole was captivating and intriguing.
For content, there is a very intense act of violence that leaves a character in paralyzing fear of the person who invoked the violence. The plot revolves around this fear. Along with this, there’s a few intimate scenes, one sexual scene, and some sexual assault.
I 100% recommend it for older teens and adults. Get this as soon as it comes out! Hang in there for the first 100 pages because what comes after will be worth the slow start.
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this book or any others that I have rated/reviewed, feel free to reach out to me in the comments section below this review or through my profile! 💗

Apparently this is the first I’ve read from this author, but I will be keeping my eyes open for more from her!

This was wonderful!
It was also… scary, sad, enlightening, empowering, cringe-worthy, beautiful, delicate, spectacular, bright and sweet!
So yes, it hit pretty much every emotion… and brought me to my knees on several occasions.

Aleida and Ingrid are twins in Holland. WWII is brewing. There is a lot of talk going on, but things are not terrible yet…
‘Yet’ being the key word here.
As things start to heat up, Ingrid is worried that her boyfriend is going to have to fight in the war… for the Germans… something he does not want to do.
Meanwhile, Aleida is concerned for her beloved Ballet Dance Instructor who is Jewish. She is worried that she will be in trouble as they start hearing about the Jews being rounded up.
And… their mother is of no use. She actually seems to be ‘entertaining’ one of the German leaders! 😮😳

So, Aleida covers for Ingrid as she attempts to flee Holland. And she stays behind with her mother… until the Nazi she is with actually hurts Aleida. And then she needs to escape too.

Fast forward to several years later, and Aleida is now Ada Worthington-Fox… an up and coming starlet in Hollywood!
She is trying desperately to make a BIG NAME for herself… and seems to be succeeding!

Until one day a letter shows up on her doorstep with her prior name. 😮

This one pulled me in and held on tight. Interesting to read how Hollywood A-listers were reacting to all that was going on with Hitler. And, how many of them were spurned in the news. Sometimes for innocent things. Other times for taking part in things they shouldn’t have been…

But wow! What an incredible ride! And what wonderful insight we gained from reading this! And, it’s mentioned that this is loosely based on Audrey Hepburn… who I love! So, a total win-win for me!!

5+ blazing, hot, intriguing-yet-scary stars for me! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

A richly researched dual-timeline historical novel with fascinating settings

The Star Society by Gabriella Saab is an intricately crafted story that moves between German-occupied Holland in the 1940s and the tension-filled atmosphere of Red Scare era Hollywood. At its center are twin sisters whose lives diverge dramatically-one fleeing to America to marry and eventually becoming a government investigator, the other joining the resistance in Europe before escaping to Hollywood, reinventing herself, and rising to stardom. Saab’s inspiration from Audrey Hepburn adds a compelling real-world layer to the novel’s Old Hollywood storyline.

What truly shines in this novel is the impeccable research. The historical detail, both in occupied Holland and in the inner workings of the film industry during a fraught political moment, feels authentic and immersive. The family dynamics between the sisters are especially well drawn, exploring loyalty, sacrifice, and the way trauma shapes identity.

I did, however, struggle a bit with the pacing early on. The exposition is slow, and it took me some time to connect emotionally with the characters. Additionally, the romantic subplots felt less developed than the rest of the narrative. Both male love interests were so steadfast, forgiving, and close to “too perfect” that their relationships lacked the tension and complexity I hoped for.

I read this in both ebook and audiobook formats, and the narrator deserves special mention. Her performance added a depth and emotional clarity to the sisters that helped pull me into the story more quickly. She differentiated their voices beautifully and brought an extra layer of nuance to their internal conflicts, making the listening experience especially engaging.

Still, the strengths, especially the atmosphere of Old Hollywood, the dual timelines, and the thoughtful exploration of how fear and ideology ripple through families, make this an engaging read for fans of meticulously researched historical fiction.

I ultimately rated The Star Society 3.75 stars and would recommend it to readers who enjoy layered historical narratives, sister stories, mid-century Hollywood settings, and well-performed audiobooks.

🌟All the Stars!🌟

Thank you to NetGalley for the prepublication Audiobook. I loved it and think you will, too. Here’s why this is going to be a big book that you don’t want to miss.

Heart. Soul. Heat. Timeliness.

Heart—

This book has heart interwoven throughout. It’s a story of sisterly love. It’s a story of survival through multiple fraught times. It’s a story of following one’s passion. It’s a story of missed opportunities. It’s a story about truth, and the juxtaposition of desires. It’s a story that had me rushing to read the history of the actress who’s life somewhat inspired the novel (while the book also stands very much on its own characters’ stories, which I think was a perfect way to do it).

The narrator provides so much heart to the delivery, too. Pitch perfect.

Soul—

There are several differing souls examined in this book. Not the least of which being the stars in the society parties hosted by our main character. Who’s good? Who’s worthy? Who’s bad? Who belongs on the black list? Who gets to be saved? So, so many souls. But also the author really poured herself into this one, in my opinion. And that makes for a captivating read.

Heat—

There are various degrees of heat applied in this romantic cat-and-mouse thriller. The passion at the heart of the love story is very moving and engaging, as our star and heartthrob dance around the will-they-won’t they trope. Exquisitely written; I was enthralled. And the other heat, that of the good guy (girl) / bad guy chase, that was equally interesting. Some flashbacks to the time of WWII helped inform the fraught times of the US McCarthy era. And all the interrogation. Well-played.

Timeliness—

Without judgment, this book basically shines a mirror on our times, also. We have to know what we’ve done before, where we’ve been before, to properly examine what we are doing now. I enjoy escape that helps me do that. Especially when offered with the pass-through of history. I don’t know where we are going, but I can still trust those who are taking the time to honestly and seriously examine what we are doing. And that includes readers of books like this.

Well done! Get your copy now!

If you're a fan of historical fiction with a strong emotional core, The Star Society, is a must-read. Set against the glittering yet paranoid backdrop of 1946 Hollywood, this novel masterfully weaves together espionage, post-war trauma, and most compellingly, the complex relationship between two sisters who thought they'd lost each other forever.

Ada Worthington-Fox is a rising star in Hollywood, but behind the glamour lies a past steeped in resistance work, Gestapo imprisonment, and a desperate escape from war-torn Arnhem. When Ingrid, her politically sharp and fiercely loyal sister, shows up unexpectedly, the story takes off. Ingrid, now a private investigator in D.C., is tasked with rooting out communist influences in Hollywood. Ironically, with Ada as her target.
What makes this book shine is the emotional tension between the sisters. Their reunion is anything but simple. Both carry secrets, both are on missions that could destroy the other, and yet their bond anchors the entire narrative. Their loyalty is tested in ways they couldn't imagine.

The historical details are rich and fascinating. From the Dutch resistance to the early days of the Red Scare, the author paints a vivid picture of a world still reeling from war while teetering on the edge of a new kind of conflict. The inclusion of real fears about communism, the role of women in post-war society, and the lingering trauma of Nazi occupation adds depth without ever feeling heavy-handed.

While the pacing occasionally slows in the middle, the payoff is worth it. The final chapters are tense, emotional, and deeply satisfying. The question of justice versus safety, and whether silence is ever truly protective, lingers long after the last page.
Highly recommended for readers who love historical fiction with heart, suspense, and a powerful portrayal of sisterhood.

*This is an outlier rating*

Many readers will love this, especially if you enjoy WW2 historical fiction. But it didn't work for me.

Plot summary: Ada and Ingrid are twins in WW2 Holland. They have sympathies for the Jews and help the resistance, while their mother is in with the Germans. Ingrid escapes with her husband, while Ada gets captured, but eventually manages to run away.

Five years later, the twins reunite when Ada, now a famous movie star in Hollywood, ends up on the FBI's list to investigate for communism. But someone else may be watching - the Nazi whose evidence Ada stole. Will he find them before they can expose him?

I loved the premise. Ada hosts glamorous Hollywood parties, the timeline is mixed with flashbacks to WW2, and there's the communist witchhunt arc.

However, it fell flat for me for several reasons.

First is the slow pacing. I felt the setup was too long and I couldn't really get into the story. Next was that it felt convenient, like everyone thought the other people were dead, but they all show up at the same, right time, quite alive. On top of that, the story was entirely predictable.
Most annoying was that I figured out the big twist the moment the relevant players were introduced. Then I had to wait the whole story for our main characters to figure it out.
But mostly, I think there were missing details that could have brought it up a notch. For example, when a starlet is sent to jail for three months, she emerges as if nothing happened. No details about how horrible it was behind bars, no trauma.

I am glad other readers are loving this, though, and you might, too.

2.5 stars

Star Society by Gabriella Saab is an engaging and thoughtfully crafted work of historical fiction that blends rich atmosphere with an intriguing speculative edge.

One of the strongest elements of the novel is the bond between the sisters at its core. Their relationship feels authentic and emotionally grounded, shaped by loyalty, tension, and shared history. The way Gabriella Saab explores sisterhood—especially under pressure—adds real depth to the story and gives the narrative an emotional anchor beyond the plot itself.

The political climate of the time is another standout. Power, influence, and societal expectations are woven naturally into the story, creating a sense of unease and momentum that mirrors the characters’ internal struggles. Rather than feeling heavy-handed, the politics enhance the stakes and help explain the difficult choices the characters are forced to make.

The historical setting is well researched and immersive, and the concept of the Star Society is genuinely compelling. While a few sections moved a bit more slowly and could have benefited from deeper emotional exploration, the overall pacing and storytelling remained engaging.

As an advanced reader, I found Star Society to be a strong and promising novel. It was creative, atmospheric, and emotionally resonant. Readers who enjoy historical fiction that examines family bonds within a charged political landscape will find much to appreciate here.
