(Disclosure: Bob is a dear friend, a former colleague, and my 10th grade English teacher. Our connection over 40 years is what schools dream could happen more often between teacher and student... and happens far more often than many can believe!)
First, I'm giving this 4 stars because it's an attempt at an honest (if biased) review. SMALL INTENTIONS is 100 short stories - or if you prefer, prose poems, or fictional(ish) reflections - all precisely 100 words each. It's not "baby shoes" flash fiction, but it's a step-sibling of such endeavors. It's catching a scene looking out a train window, or looking through an open dining room window as you bike down the street. Glimpses from which the reader is encouraged (dared?) to fill in blanks, gaps, uncertainties.
The danger of reading this book and knowing the author is in how you know with certainty that several of these are inspired by very real events, very real people. But remember: the best fiction is reality in a funhouse mirror, especially a funhouse where some mirrors are minimally warped, almost a perfect reflection. But not quite.
One book down, Bob. I look forward to the next one, where you'll almost certainly earn that fifth star!
