I didn't read the first novel in the series. But, the author has given a gist of the happenings in the first novel at the beginning. It helped a lot to catch up on the backstory. The novel has good pace with well thought out subplots - it kept my interest till the end. The plot was interesting and the adventure and action kept me awake. The character building was great. You will care for most of the supporting characters too, while reading. The kids were adorable, but you can't help feeling annoyed at them for not listening to anyone and wandering off of their own, bringing another new problem.
There were some parts that I am not so fond of. Writing - it was dragging in some places. I want to skip them, because they felt less important to me with other surrounding plots. There are very less hopeful places in the novel. I wish there were some bright spots to hope for, in Jules' life. It was always filled with danger and threats from the start to end.
I had a good reading time, although didn't feel so satisfied/hopeful at the end.
Prisoner of Reign by Emma Right continues where Keeper of Reign left off. Jules has a couple of close calls and gets discouraged at times, but his will to fulfill his destiny is strong. There are many obstacles he is going to have to overcome in order to figure out the way to end the curse. I think this is a good read for young teens that enjoy fantasy. It shows that there are consequences for not following the rules, that everyone has an inner strength, and that there is nothing to big that cannot be overcome. This author uses a lot of imagination in the creation of different animals that Jules and his friends come across during their adventure. I give this book 4 stars. I stayed up late reading, just because I had to know how this book would end. There were a few minor problems with editing in the book but nothing that takes away from the story. I have already started recommending this book to my son and his friends.
