Bitter Burn

Rate this book
I think it’s important that you know this about me, that you understand I’m not sorry.

I’d do it again.

After my husband died eight years ago, I made vengeance my only purpose, my religion, my destiny. But to get to my enemy, I had to make myself like him. He had a kingdom of secrets? Then I would make an empire. He had blood on his hands? Then I would bathe in it.

But Tristan and Isolde changed everything. I hadn’t counted on wanting them, needing them; I hadn’t counted on how it felt to watch the two of them fall in love. I’d thought I had everything under control—I’d thought I was safe from my own long-dead heart. I’d never imagined that the wronged husband, the jealous king from my childhood fairy tales, would be played by none other than me.

It no longer matters what I used to believe. My enemy is ready to finish the game, and for the first time in eight years, I have pieces on the board I can’t afford to lose. I’ll burn the entire world to keep Tristan and Isolde safe, I’ll scorch the earth—but as any good assassin will tell you, fire will only get a man so far, because there’s always something left in the ashes. And for the three of us, it’s the cold, bitter bones of the truth: their story begins and ends with me.

And every story needs a villain…

Full review to come. I need a cold shower, someone to pet me while crooning what a brave, good girl I was, and to gather my thoughts.

Never mind me, but the more I think about it the ANGRIER I get at Mark. I don’t think this trilogy really hit the mark for me in the romance, it did it in the plot/story but the romance makes me angry every time I think about it. So I am here to lower my rate instead, so 4⭐️ it’s more fitting since I complain so much about stupid Mark. I honestly don’t even understand myself why he makes me so angry but I have a weird jealousy that’s it’s funny to me because in all my years of reading dark DARK romances, it is the first time a character makes me annoyed and angry without being even close to the villains I am use to it. But alas here we are 😂

Okay now that I sat on for a little I can write a review about it.
This is the third and final book of the Lioness trilogy but I would highly suggest not to skip the prequel novela Salt in the Wound because that book shows how Mark met Isolde and I actually really like that little novela.
The thing is, I am extremely conflicted in this trilogy….. I liked the novela prequel, hated the first book even though its most people’s favorite and loved the second book and this last one wasn’t my favorite but I had to give it 5⭐️ because of the geniality of Sierra Simone in tying the trilogy together. There are many things I absolutely LOVE IT about this trilogy and many that I hate with all my being. And that makes me the biggest hypocrite ever because when I explain, people will think like : “but you love the darkest most depraved books ever” …. So in comparison my complaints about this trilogy are actually ridiculous, but I can’t help it what irks me and what not and I am a very feel based type of reader.
So to begin with, Sierra Simone is a devil genius in her writing. Her books are normally very thought provoking and extremely spicy, she has crazy plots and I love that about this trilogy here. This trilogy has a very complicated plot that goes around corrupted priests, politicians and ex CIA agents all mixed with the most sensual spicy and lust filled story. It truly makes you think if some of those things are actually reality somehow…..
My conflicted feelings with this trilogy actually comes around the fact that I don’t and I do love the throuple in here. And now you will see the hypocrisy…. It’s because contrary to most people beliefs I DO IN FACT LOVE a throuple situation but ONLY and I mean ONLY when the woman is the absolute queen and adored, worshipped and loved by both men. I don’t care if it is MMF or MFM I just care about the woman. And this trilogy made me question the guys feelings towards Isolde wayyyyyy too many times for my liking. To be fair, to question Mark’s feelings because Tristan was equally in love with both and honestly even a little more soulmate in love with Isolde and that I like it a lot. Mark on the other hand was so lost in his manipulation and revenge and since we don’t have his POV for the first 2 books we don’t truly know what’s going on in his mind, a lot times I HATED the way he was harsh and cold towards Isolde but soft and tender towards Tristan, and it did NOT help when I learned why he picked Tristan in the first place, because in my mind that would’ve make him act colder towards Tristan instead of Isolde, Isolde was the one with more of an unfair situation since she was roped into this mess in a very young age by her uncle without having knowledge of anything, she was groomed and it was obvious how hard things were for her. How lonely she always felt, she had no one on her side and no love in her life .
Mark is the type of character that should’ve been my favorite, exactly because he IS the villain and darker one, but in this case here I love and hated him throughout the trilogy and the reason is simply because of Isolde… I’ve seen many reviews here and the majority of people loveeeeeee Mark, a lot people love Tristan and again true to our own self destructive nature, we women tear Isolde apart and she is scrutinized by most people. I FUCKING HATE how we turn on our fellow women even in fiction. I absolutely LOVE Isolde for the reasons people don’t like her. I love her because she is strong, a killer, a fighter, smart, not easily fooled (she was by her uncle and Mark because they were professionals at it and had their plans for years), but Isolde is one of those characters that doesn’t want to show vulnerability, softness or feelings because in her world and as a woman she knows it will be used against her. And that again was proven here because after the events of the end of book 2 , she was the only one judge and scorned by everyone at Lioness’s, not Tristan and not Mark. Only SHE had to prove herself and that’s fucked because again women lose no matter what.
So I was here throughout this trilogy in love with the 3 of them but also jealous and angry at some situations that I can’t explain because I don’t want to spoil the book. But one thing is for sure, this trilogy has an amazing plot and I loved that. I don’t like that all Mark did was to avenge his dead husband who wasn’t even a loyal one, I didnt like at all every time he showed more affection towards Tristan then Isolde even though it became very clear he was completely, undoubtedly, unequivocally, head over heels, obsessed to the point of insanity in love with Isolde, I would go to the extreme to say he did love her more than he loved Tristan, but the not showing enough because whatever the fuck the reason was at the moment always without a fail managed to make me SO angry and jealous. 😂 also I didn’t like how he did not grovel at her feet in the end, it was nice that he gave her freedom back and it was nice to see him falling apart and crying when she left. But the book skips his suffering for her …… it doesn’t show him withering like it was fast mentioned….. Tristan stayed with him and that also didn’t sit well with me because Mark in his thoughts mentions how he was getting lost on Tristan and leaving marks allover his body because he was suffering and missing Isolde so much. BITCH GO SUFFER THE FUCK ALONE AND ATONE FOR YOUR MISTAKES! GO THE FUCK GROVEL AT HER FEET ! I wanted to SEE his suffering and I wanted to see the penance, the groveling, the begging and I didn’t because it didn’t happen…. Again she was the one coming back and even though was nice cause she saved him being the baddest bitch she was, still too little from him because I NEEDED HIM TO GO AFTER HER and prove to her he deserved another chance. URGH just writing this makes me angry allover again. Don’t get me wrong you will see throughout how much he actually loves her , and Tristan always shows regardless. But I guess this is one of those stories that I didn’t like that was 3 people. I guess I would much prefer a story between Mark and Isolde only OR between Tristan and Isolde. The 3 of them together even though it was THE HOTTEST THING EVER, it made me more angry then happy. I still can’t rate less than 5⭐️ because of the insanely good amazing plot ! Hands down, flowers at Sierra Simone’s feet for creating this complex story. Also the second book had me more on the edge of my seat that this one, this one was a little too slow. Still, If you are looking for drama, revenge plot, betrayals out of the wazoo, complex characters, all the emotions and delicious spice, look no further, this is DEFINITELY the trilogy for you . In case you are wondering YES the 3 of them end up together HEA !

What a journey. A very angsty, kinky, queer one.

Let’s get the rough bits out of the way: The final book in the trilogy suffers from some pacing issues and a meandering plot in sections of the novel. It seemed like something Simone, in the weaker moments, struggled to wrangle together. I was surprised to hear her actually confirm this struggle in the bonus interview tacked onto the end of the audiobook.

None of that truly impaired my ability to enjoy the hell out of this book.

I’ll keep saying this until my dying breath: I don’t know a single other romance author who writes like Sierra Simone. Her prose is magnificent. Her stop-you-in-your-tracks turn of phrases ignite all your senses, further strengthening the emotionality of the narrative.

Mark, Tristan, and Isolde, the saucy murderers that they are, are so well matched. It’s such a pleasure to inhabit their heads in the shifting POVs. There’s character growth where there needs to be, and that growth occurs without nerfing of what makes each of them quintessentially themselves.

I don’t want to say much more until others have a chance to read it for themselves. But after you do, let’s discuss the cameos, two in particular because !!!!!*squeals*

Key takeaway:This trilogy is absolutely worth your time. Especially if you love an erotic thriller, morally grey characters, stunning writing, and kink. Please do yourself a favour and do not skip the free prequel novella, Salt in the Wound. It’s up there as one of the most intense, hottest reads I’ve ever sweat through.

Many thanks to Lyric Audio for the ALC

Sierra Simone continues to distinguish herself as the premier author of angsty erotic romance. Even that sounds too paltry to fully express what type of story this is, but that is how I see her. The way her characters explore revenge, pain, religion, love, hope, anguish, self-sacrifice, and devotion through their intimate moments... very few other authors can even touch the work she does.

I knew Mark Trevena was my favorite dominant she's written, and that was BEFORE I finally got into his head. We've been teased and held back from him for 2.5 books now. We've seen his sadism and twisted love on full display, but we haven't seen his heart and mind behind it, until now.

I love a complex character with oodles of aspects to mull over and chew on, and Mark is one of the best. I adore Tristan and Isolde as well, but they wouldn't shine the way they do without Mark to push, and pull, and spank them into shape. Then to be tender and loving and spoil them as well. I just... love this thruple so much!

There are so many layers to this story and Sierra Simone is truly the Grand Maestro and weaves magic with her keyboard. I truly wish more people appreciated the skill it takes to write this level of an erotic romance. Because she does SO MUCH more than titillate and tease. The emotion is raw, real, and basic at a fundamental level. It's quite unique.

She does make her characters EARN their HEAs and so this path hurts and we lose some people along the way. We also get some cameos that are deeply satisfying if you are familiar with her backlist. Though it is unnecessary to start way back there. You can dive in with this trilogy and start a journey unlike many others.

Buckle up and prepare for the bumpy ride, but know the HEA will be waiting for you at the end.

I listen to an ALC and it was narrated by Jacob Morgan, Oscar Reyes and Isabelle Ruther. Absolutely stunning and I could not stop listening. Cheeks burning and heart racing through it all.

5 Stars
4.5 on the spice scale

🖤 A Great Ending to a Great Reimagined Retelling

I honestly don’t have much to say beyond how beautifully Sierra ties this story together: from plot, to characters (with an s) development, to the lyricism and mysticism that run through every page.

Do not read the Author’s Note before finishing the book, BUT definitely stop there afterward to appreciate the sheer research, planning, and thought poured into this series. It’s rare, it’s intentional, it’s brilliant.

And of course, shoutout to the King of Angst and Yearning himself, Mark brought to aching, magnetic life by Jacob Morgan.👑

4.5 ✨

4.5/5 - Oh, Mark…What an epic conclusion to a new favorite series of mine. It was a spicy and twisty end to the series. I didn’t see the reveals coming at the 80% mark. I thought Sierra wrapped up the series very swell.

Sierra Simone is QUEEN. I would kneel before her like our good puppy sub Tristan 😆

Book 3, the final in the trilogy - DEFINITELY recommend reading the American Queen trilogy and Lyonesse prequel novella first!

Also did I read a character with the surname ‘Bell’?! 🤯

This will be interconnected with the Priest Series 🫢 the 4th Priest book due for publication mid 2026 AND I CAN NOT WAIT 👏

This book is plot heavy. But when it hits, the smut smuts 🤌
It is Sierra Simone after all 😏

Beautiful writing, as usual 👌

This one picks up from where book 2 left off…
Mark’s plans for revenge…

They killed what I loved. So I would kill all of them.

His tools for revenge have left him…

I want them. I hate them. I love them.

I am livid with distrust and spite.

I am mortally wounded by them holding hands.

BITTER BURN indeed… 🔥

Very murdery, political… the plot ALL comes together here. Some reveals definitely had me shook!

The American Queen series starts a bit mystical, which I remember thinking never seemed to go anywhere… but this series ends on a mystical note which was a nice touch I thought, bringing the two series together in that way too ✨

Overall I loved this series! I want to go back and read the first books again so I can see the clues … there were definitely clues!

4.5⭐️
3-4🌶️

The series as a whole -> 5⭐️

Unfortunately this third installment of the Lyonesse series suffered from a convoluted plot and what I saw as I struggle to really get into Mark's head the way we as the reader were wanting/needing. The plot twist SERIOUSLY improved things at the 75% ish mark, but by then, I had honestly lost the bulk of my patience.

I do want to emphasize though, the plot twist is GOOD!!! For me it begged the question, did we really need three books here? I feel like the second book could've continued pretty much at that 75% mark of the third book and it would packed SUCH a bigger bunch of a story as a duet.

Also, a lot of this author's series are starting to sound the same when you get to the back halves. I definitely appreciate and recognize the vast amount of knowledge she has on the history of the Catholic church and theology in general, but does it need to be worked in to every series?

Finally, I was given an ALC of the book. I loved the narrators for both Mark and Isolde. I did not really like the narrator for Tristan.

Still loved this series overall.

I was given an ALC of this book in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Some books you enjoy, some books you love, some steal pieces of your soul and entrench themselves in the cracks left behind, thus changing you on a cellular level. This book, this series did the latter for me.

ARC read. Full RTC coming soon once I add a semblance of coherence to my ramblings

***

I’ve gone about 7 years with the same Sierra Simone series as my fave, heck, in my top 5 series of all time. Now don’t tell my New Camelot babies this, but Lyonesse may have just usurped the top spot? Gasp. I know I know, I need a minute too. But this trilogy (+ Salt in the Wound) is utterly perfect? Don’t get me wrong, New Camelot is always and forever going to have a special place in my heart, but damn Lyonesse came in like a wrecking ball from Sierra’s big beautiful brain and completely stole my soul. That was a very Mark thing to do, actually.

Speaking of, this review is likely to be just a series of incoherent ramblings of a girl losing her shit over Mark Trevena, our dark depraved diabolical Devil. No you don’t understand, I’m so obsessed with him I’m gonna sound deranged, I’m warning you right now. I also have a thing for spies and CIA type shit (fictional, although the real world could use several Mark type operatives) and Mark just really fed that beast. My favorite animal is Sierra Simone writing about kingship in all its forms and life stages through the Doms in each of her series. So what happens when the king isn’t a noble warrior or scholar, but the king of the underworld, the devil himself? She makes him more sinful and more depraved and morally dark grey and still responsible and imposing and you somehow fall deeply in love with all of it.

Mark Trevena hasn’t done a single thing wrong in his entire life. Murder, what murder? Crimes where? Manipulation and blackmail? Never heard of her. Lying to his subs? It’s for their own good. Controlling and cruel? We gotta do what we gotta do. Being in Mark’s head is a trip, you get to meet the vengeful God, but you also meet the very human, very vulnerable man. This man had me sobbing for him on page 2. Yes, cruel sinful manipulative Mark is a favorite, but playful Mark? Soft Mark? Sad desperate obsessive Mark? Funny Mark? That’s my kryptonite. Seriously his internal monologue is so drily funny I was basically a giggling schoolgirl with a crush. Mark is the definition of my type: charming, cocky, snootily well dressed, witty, and morally flexible. And he COOKS?! Shut upp. I wanted to crawl into his brain and stay there (not to get weird). Which is why him breaking the fourth wall was everything to me. Wdym Daddy Mark is speaking directly to us? I could barely cope. Anyway as I was saying, Mark could tell me all the pretty lies while stomping on my heart with his designer shoes and I would literally say I need more please and thank you.

No wonder his little puppy and knife wife are absolutely powerless against his charms. Even running away after trying to unalive him won’t curb their obsession with their Dark God. Relatable honestly. Heck, it’s not like Mark can stay away either, murder attempts be damned. Isolde growing into her formidable self (outside of her saint identity) and finding her way as more than just a masochistic sub is so sexy, the shadows and glass girl become the queen at last. And I don’t blame Mark for wanting to hoard her, and lil puppy Tristan for being putty in her hands. And feet. Our stabby king and queen are more possessive and protective than ever over our lil golden retriever. And his hair (serious business, that hair). As they should be, bcs sweet baby Tristan is too good and pure for this world, the sad golden boi just wanting to be told what to do. And they’re so hot doing it.

Speaking of hot, calling a Sierra Simone book hot is like calling the sun hot. Obvious and an understatement. The woman makes erotic scenes into art and science and religion and there is little more holy to me than sexuality detailed so lovingly, and love wrapped around it so masterfully. And there’s never a shortage of yearning. Mark yearning for Tristan and Isolde even as he tries to stay away, Tristan yearning to be the puppy at his masters’ feet (okay that metaphor got odd), Isolde yearning to be truly loved, to just not be alone.

Of course, we also have a high stakes plot to resolve, involving wars and churches and families and so many secrets. And this series is wildly successfully with the balancing act of the plot and character. The action is both thrilling and clever, the pieces slowly coming together to form a shocking complete picture. And if you’re looking for a gentle but thorough critique of the military industrial complex and organized religion, this series provides that too. I really liked the new characters introduced and I’m so happy with all the cameos; and the inhuman noise that came out of me when we got a glimpse into certain future things cannot be described. And getting to spend some time with our trio during their HEA left my heart full to bursting. Hashtag blessed 🥹

This series is Ms Simone at her deadliest; fast paced and action packed but with her usual detours into history and literature, and the writing of an angel poet. I rarely gather more obscure knowledge (and happily) than I do from a Sierra Simone book. I could just keep writing odes to Sierra and Mark and this series, so I’m gonna stop and go stare at a wall, mourn the end of my new favorite series, and wait for whatever’s next from the house of Simone. Or until I can listen to it again on audio next week.

Things I said out loud while reading Bitter Burn: “Ohmigod!” “Holy Shit!” “What?!?!” “I knew it!!!!” “I can’t f***ing believe it!” and “Thank god!” This masterpiece is an epic conclusion to the Lyonesse Trilogy, beyond anything I could have imagined and everything I didn't know I needed. There are cameos from her other books that made me squeal. Sierra knew what she was doing. I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read it again.

Of course, it's impossible to talk about the story with any detail because so much happens and most of it is a surprise so I’ll keep this general and without spoilers. Bitter Burn is a WILD RIDE, incredibly romantic and suspenseful and has the most satisfying ending. If you were dying from the cliffhanger of Honey Cut, you will not be disappointed.

We find out what happened to Mark’s husband that gives context to his motivations, then a tangle of other surprises are slowly revealed. It’s incredible to hear Mark’s thoughts and watch his meticulous and savvy spycraft in action. There are parts of the story that are so thrilling they feel like a Jason Bourne movie. Mark is playing 3D chess and I loved getting the behind the scenes of his evil revenge plans. We experience them for the first time along with Tristan and Isolde and are just as shocked as they are. It’s so fun!

The triple POV allows you to feel each of their thoughts and feelings, worries and desires. Mark is so mean, yet graceful and smart and drops a lot of religious and poetic references that I found myself looking up. Tristan is not only beautiful, but turns out to have a dry wit. Isolde goes through the wringer emotionally, but finds herself so like Mark in her murdering prowess that she can more than hold her own. And the insatiable heat and kink scenes between them is off the charts. 🥵

But it's the actual WRITING that I was most impressed with. It’s so creative, atmospheric and beautiful. I don't know how Sierra does it, but she has woven some magic spell into her perfectly crafted paragraphs that finds you completely hooked. The Lyonesse Trilogy is without a doubt my favorite series in the Sierraverse.

Thank you SO MUCH to the Sierra Simone Influencer Team for the ARC>

A solid end for Mark, Tristan, and Isolde. And we finally get so much from Mark’s POV in this one! Still my favorite series overall from this author and these characters were so much fun to follow throughout the books.

I think overall I enjoyed the first books in the series more, or maybe my reading taste has changed since starting the series vs finishing it. But that is on my reading taste changing and nothing against the writing or story here.

I love pathetic lovers.

Okay but seriously what a trilogy!! The yearning and tension was unmatched. It’s so dramatic for no reason but I loved every second of it. All three of these books hooked me from the beginning and had me on the edge of my seat. This one in particular picked up the plot and I just loved the mix of plot and internal suffering and torture these poor characters put themselves through.

Also, very spicy. Like next level spicy I never want to look anyone in the eye again.

I will miss these characters dearly and can’t wait to read more from Sierra Simone

Bitter Burn: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Sierra Simone (Lyonesse, #3)

"We weren’t real in the dark, but now we’re more than real in the light. We’re doomed in it."

Mark is on a mission: get his bodyguard back. Get his wife back. Despite the knife they drove into his back, he can't help but still want them. He's still determined to get revenge for the man who killed his husband eight years ago, and Isolde and Tristan are making it a little complicated...

Tropes:
– MMF Romance
– Bodyguard/boss/wife
– Kink club
– Romantic Suspense
– Revenge

There’s a singular, indescribable feeling that comes with finishing a Sierra Simone series. She is, without question, my favorite author (one of the very few whose entire backlist I’ve devoured because every single one is better than the last). Her writing is at once profound and unpretentious, lyrical and devastatingly beautiful, capable of making your heart ache with every emotion under the sun. Bitter Burn embodies all of this: a whirlwind of hurt, longing, revenge, angst, and yes—plenty of spice.

Reading a Sierra Simone book is always an experience, but finishing one of her series is something else entirely: incomparable, unforgettable, impossible to replicate. I adored this book. I adored this series. It’s the perfect conclusion to Mark, Tristan and Isolde's story: not only tying together this story, but also offering tantalizing glimpses into other worlds, both finished and still to come.

Lyonesse is everything I crave in a romance novel: charged with emotion, brimming with love and angst, thrumming with tension and suspense. And above all, it is the work of a true master of the craft: Sierra Simone.

Thank you endlessly to Sierra for the early, early copy of this book. And thank you to Flavia for holding my hand through FaceTime for basically 90% of it.

Mark + Isolde + Tristan

The final book - Mark's book.
Tristan and Isolde have run away to Ireland.
Mark knows where they are at all times, obviously. And he can't help 'visiting' them - without them knowing.
But he's also busy traveling the world trying to find out ... things.
Back home in D.C. things have to look as if the 'affair' is over. They all need to survive until Isolde's uncle can be stopped - so they send Tristan to work in Montreal for a bit.
But they all miss each other so much.

Will we finally get a happy end for our three darlings?
READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT!

Well.

I liked it but just like with the first two books...
I'm so not a fan of that super kinky BDSMy submissive stuff. And I hate religion so much - so... no idea why I keep reading these books!? But I love them anyway.
We get some really erotic moments, adorable and sweet moments and some very dangerous and mysterious and secret and whatnot moments.
We so hope that this will end with a happily ever after for our three darlings - together! Which doesn't seem likely for most of the trilogy. Lol.

I wanted the book to be a bit shorter - it was way too long - especially the first half. Sierra writes beautifully, but it was just too much.

I loved all the little cameos we got. And I loved Isolde's present!

This trilogy is perfect for fans of super erotic kink, mystery, suspense and you should be into religion (and folklore) - because it's a lot!

BITTER BURN was the perfect final book in this super erotic, mysterious, secretive and dangerous trilogy!

I feel vindicated!! But I didn't know the depths of his plans or how it would all affect him. Good gravy, Sierra Simone's mind is astounding.

There's a lot happening as we wrap up the trilogy: the deepening Ys conspiracy, cameos from Priest, New Camelot, and Thornchapel, past lives, and, most importantly, a thoughtful exploration of sacrifice and mercy. What do we deny ourselves? That question turns out to be at the heart of this Tristan and Isolde retelling.

Mark, Tristan, and Isolde have been shaped by their worst actions and each has a different response to it and, in turn, a different response to their burgeoning relationship. Not to mention how they approach sex and kink. They have to work through Tristan and Isolde's infidelity while continuing Mark's plan to end Ys, including Isolde's emotionally abusive Uncle Cashel.

This all worked overwhelmingly well for me. I could have done without the and sometimes the dialogue felt unlikely, like Dawson's Creek except about religion. But I loved these three characters and how they ultimately came together. Pun intended.

Yeah so, this happened. Apparently. I feel like I’m dreaming. Was it all a dream? I don’t know. Off to stare at a wall for 10 years, then I’ll update this. Somehow. I DON’T WANT TO LEAVE 😭😭

————————————

Hi. You’ve reached the voicemail of Cee. She can’t come to the phone right now because she’s been emotionally wrecked and simultaneously put back together by yet another Sierra Simone book. Please leave a message 🙃

So I know I’m not here to try to convince you to read this book. If you’ve read the others, loved them, and have (like me) been on the edge of your seat waiting for the conclusion to the Lyonesse trilogy.. absolutely nothing I say here is going to convince you to pick it up. All I’m here to say is the following:

I absolutely loved, devoured, savoured, ate up, didn’t put down, left zero crumbs, LIVED & BREATHED this book. In just a few short days. And now I fear I will never be the same person I was.

If you’ve (again, like me) been dying to read Daddy Marks POV, and get a look inside his head, you get to see it ALL in this book. It’s got multiple POVs but Mark is a complicated man. He’s got complicated feelings. Complicated personas, and with the way Honey Cut ended? A complicated ”love” life.

This was like watching a movie unfold. A giant, big, beautiful, sexy movie. Yes, sexy. The Sierra Spice™️ is of course, off the charts HOT. And I mean, I’ll be replaying those scenes in my head for years to come HOT. The standard of HOTNESS. The way spice should be written. Always.

But don’t come for the spice, come for the story. Because truly, the plot is heavy, necessary. With multiple moving parts, many people, many places, and MANY factors, the plot is where this story truly shines. I was fully invested. Absolutely enamoured with every secret Mark holds, every emotion Tristan goes though, and every piece of growth that Isolde experiences.

This is truly a book with magic powers. Unlike anything you’ll ever read again or before it. The settings, the scenes, the description, and the LOVE. All of it comes together in a beautiful Shibari bow for you to enjoy. Savour it. Every word. Make notes, stay hydrated, bring snacks (and maybe a BOB 👀) because you’re in it for the long haul. Mark has a lot to get off his chest, and the conclusion to the Lyonesse empire is here.

Heat Index: 10/10

—Tristan and Isolde (and Mark) retelling

—you guys went and cheated without me???

—throuple in trouble (varied meaning)

—MALE TEARS

The Basics:

Mark Trevena has been plotting and building toward his ultimate revenge for eight years. And his scheme was pretty airtight, actually—except for the part where he fell in love with his bodyguard Tristan, and his wife, Isolde, two key pawns. And, perhaps more significantly, the part where they fell in love with each other… and that actually hurt. Now they know the truth (or they think do) and have fled the scene. Mark won’t stop until he gets what he’s been working for; and that includes Tristan and Isolde, exactly where he wants them.

The Review:

Aaaah, we’re finally here! If you’re new to the Lyonesse series, just know—none of these books stand alone. Start with prequel novella Salt in the Wound (which is currently free on Sierra Simone’s website) and go from there. Trust me.

With that out of the way… Yes. It’s everything I wanted. Yes. It’s a pretty flawless ending to one of my favorite series ever (don’t ask me if it’s my favorite Sierra Simone series; it might be, but New Camelot is lodged quite deeply in my heart). Yes, we finally get Mark’s point of view, and yes, it’s a little deranged and a lot funny. He has the soul of a lover, to his own horror.

What is it about romance and identifying a certain type of blond hero and uniquely bad and hilarious? Mark begins this book like “And they said I was a cuck… and I guess am…” and just spins out from there. This is the second MMF dynamic in a Sierra Simone novel that’s added in each POV sequentially, ending on the dom (or in this case, the Dom of Doms, because Isolde doesn’t completely skip on the dominating) and she does it so well. Tristan and Isolde worship Mark and fear him and just can’t quite crack him throughout the preceding books. And honestly? That’s partially because Mark is fully upfront with himself and who he is to the extent that he knows. But then pesky emotions like love and heartbreak get in the way, completely throwing off his self-perception. No matter what, he stays blithely hilarious, the perfect foil to Isolde’s steely self-possession (perhaps disguising the fact that, deep down, she’s still a young woman in love) and Tristan’s lovely pining.

In some ways, this book is about the characters taking apart the lies they’ve told themselves, the myths they’ve constructed about who they and their lovers are. At the same, there are a few fabulous nods to the original myth, which I as an Arthuriana fan have to love. (The take on the white and black sails? Absolutely genius.) There’s no doubt that these characters love each other, and Mark isn’t even really in a “I can’t love” mode, like many alpha alpha alpha romance heroes get into. But do they have the resolve to choose to be with each other as all that they are, with all they’ve done? That’s another question.

The plotting is tight—there’s a lot Simone set up over the course of the previous books that needs to be paid off—but never at the expense of character. I feel like this book really sees her hammer into the beats of the myth in many ways; but where New Camelot’s retelling had to dial into some heavy time jumps to pull it off, here she gets to expand the world as the fallout of Tristan and Isolde’s affair unravels. You get a few new characters and the expansion of one who’s been around for a while—which I found rather delightful. And it allows her to challenge all three of our leads, not just Mark. Isolde has to make decisions about her own autonomy and what it means, who she actually is. Tristan gets a glimpse at an alternative, simpler ending to his story—and I feel that’s so important for him, as the least stabby of the trio.

One thing that makes this series so good—and Bitter Burn really underscores it—is how complete the triad’s bond feels. There is plenty of jealousy; Lyonesse has always been the most jealousy-driven of Simone’s poly romance series. But Mark and Isolde and Tristan feel utterly devoted to each other. You really believe these people couldn’t live without one another, and at the same time, the way in which they sort of wriggle on the hook of love is delightfully decadent. They kind of all rescue one another, metaphorically and literally, in this one. They put themselves to their limits for each other.

For all the angst, there’s a lot of fun—and it’s not all in the jokes! You get some spy fun, some “and now! We take on! The POPE!” fun (Sierra Simone/Conclave synergy what up), the expected sexy fun times, the cameos! Oh, God. The cameos. My heart. I mean, we’ve already had Embry Moore show up in this series, and I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that President Failboat (except for when it counts) is back in action. And I just. Love him so much. Wave at your underlings in an irritated manner, babe!

The very last cameo (cameos), though? Yeah. Y'all aren’t ready.

I didn’t really doubt that the ending to this series would be satisfactory, but I don’t think I fully realized how hard it would hit. Like, yeah, it gave me all the moral ambiguity and insane sex scenes a girl could want. But it also had me clutching at my heart. And the very end? The very, very end? I’m just so glad these three got that.

The Sex:

This woman writes the best sex scenes in the biz, we know this, they’re great, I was thrilled. But she really honed in on what the people wanted with this one, I think. There were two things on my “sex scene wish list” for this book, and both of them happened. And one thing I didn’t think to put on my wish list but should have ALSO happened.

Look, this series isn’t going to be for those who want everything to be cuddly and soft and not a bit tortuous. But I would say this book has perhaps? The least torturous takes on it? Of all the series? Perhaps there’s even…. tenderness. (Please. Of course there’s tenderness. Mark is, in fact, a massive simp for these two.)

I also love how much Isolde’s dominant side came out? Not with Mark—never with Mark, ha—but with Tristan, of course. I’ve seen a reader or two dismiss Tristan as an Embry knockoff, and it’s like. What? Because he cries and bottoms a lot? COME ON. They couldn’t be more different! And very frankly, while I think this triad is very different from the New Camelot triad, if you’re going to compare anyone’s dynamic to Ash and Embry… It’s Mark and Isolde. The only reason why you wouldn’t see it is because Isolde is a woman and romance has weird gender issues, but WHATEVER. I was right, the book proves me right, and Isolde’s little switch-y side only proves me RIGHTER.

And it’s funny, because like—it’s all hot and everything? But it also adds to how unique she is as a heroine. I feel that in romance, heroines often get put into a (more often) “submissive” bucket, or a “total domme” bucket. Not so much in between. Isolde really can’t be put in a box. But she’ll probably help Mark lock Tristan in one. If they feel like it.

The Conclusion:

I really don’t have anything negative to say about this book. It answers your questions, it gives the people what they want, and it does put Mark Trevena in a harrowing situation he has to be slutty to get out of. Which is kind of what I wanted ever since the line about him being able to dominate someone in a grocery store. I’m a happy camper. I think you will be, too. What a finish.

Thanks to Candi Kane PR for providing me with a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Bitter Burn was everything i’d hoped for and more….so much more!
Even knowing what i knew after Honey Cut,it still took me for a hell of a ride and left me spinning….
The truths that’d been spilled already turned out to be the tip of the iceberg.
The revelations that hit me full force hurt even more, and i didn’t think that was possible.
Isolde’s uncle was even worse than i thought he was.
His plans seemed to be working, and he had to be stopped, but how?
Mark may have shared secrets until now,but the most painful ones came spilling out here.
And they hurt Isolde and Tristan….badly!
Would those secrets be too much for them in the end?
More importantly….would they even be alive to make that decision?
Because knowing Cashel was prepared to kill to reach his goal, meant their lives were on the line….even Isoldes!!

Having reached the final page, knowing the full picture,my mind’s blown.
I’m going to need time to digest…..a lot of time.
And i’m going to need to re-read a couple of times to find the clues i’m sure i missed throughout.
Right now,i’m glad Mark found Isolde and Tristan.
Because these two helped him heal as much as he did them.
These three might’ve felt they didn’t deserve a happy after, but i strongly disagree!

Well. Fucking. Done 👏👏
I loved this series. What started out as a kinky ass soap opera moved into a delicious slow(ish) burn thriller with religious drama, secret organizations and so many revelations.

The characters were fantastic. Mark Trevena. My word. Although I found him a bit of an ass in the other books, in this one I was absolutely captivated by him. Such a complex man with so many emotions and a brain that’s a millions steps ahead of everyone else. I adored the sweet puppy that was Tristan. I felt a lot of heartbreak for him in this series, but the love he felt for Isolde and Mark was so strong. Also, just so you are aware, the spice is its own character here.

There are characters from other series in here but I can honestly say that I was never confused or felt like I was missing something. Everything was well explained.

Also there is femdom and pegging if that sways you any 😅

The final book in the Lyonesse Trilogy was worth the wait!
I was so happy to be back in this world.
Sierras writing is flawless and captivating.
The Camelot and Lyonesse trilogy’s are in my top reads ever!. And with Marks book we got a spicy MMF (as always it was some of the yummiest MMF you can imagine) and finally we learned about Marks pain after his husbands death and his plans of vengeance.

But with his arranged marriage to Isolde and his relationship with Tristen, his submissive bodyguard, he finds himself choosing between revenge and love.

The plot is plotting, the secrets are delishious and the spice is spicing. These Dom/sub and threesome scenes are hotter then hot 🥵 Find a private spot to read chapter 25, 26 and 28 cause you might need the privacy 😮‍💨

I don’t know how Sierra does it but along with Ash (from Camelot) Mark is as well written as you can write a dominant man who cares deeply for his subs. There’s just something so dirty filthy sensuel about these men. Yummy 😋

A phenomenal read. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of course!

My ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. And that’s a wrap on Lyonesse! I didn’t realize until this book that it’s in the same universe as her other series so I guess that will help me with the book hangover on this one.

I have so many thoughts, so many big feelings. I could cry big fat happy tears.
Wow wow wow, just fucking wow.
Sierra has done it again.
This was a ride I did not want to get off, and quite frankly I'm living in denial, because I'd gladly hop back on.
No one can write emotion like Sierra, who makes words flow like poetry and create them into something so tangible that you're so caught up in her world, you don't know where you're left standing. I'm at a literal loss for words.
I miss Mark already. I can't believe it's over.

3.5⭐️ I just went back to read my review of the previous book in this series. And everything that I had predicted would happened, did. Because I did not know that there was another book in this series, I definitely forgot some of the characters, the backstory of these characters and the intricacies of some of the storyline. Again, I will reiterate that salt in the wound should be considered the first book in the series. I will never understand how the author has separated that book from this trilogy. Which is the reason why I thought that I would be done with the series after what the author considers the second book. There were so many characters in this book that it was a bit difficult to remember the significance of each of them in this last book. It was a somewhat long book and I have to admit that I could not focus as well as I should have been able to. The story was good, but a little bit long winded. I anticipated this book for so long that I’m not quite sure it could have lived up to my expectations after waiting almost a full year.

Can’t even count the amount of times I had to change my chonies. Absolutely obscene. I’m sending you my undie bill, Ms. Simone. How dare you make something so horny. When I wasn’t actively reading this book, I still had its absolute filth in my mind, hence forth, why you shall be known as panty demolisher. No shit, cigarettes were smoked after some scenes.

I had to immersive read because I am a full blown SLUT. But also, Spotify only gives me 15 hours listening time (boooo Spotify, boo), so you’d better believe that I finished her via my eyeballs (or did she finish me, good lord)

On the real though, if you can handle the salacious smut, the plot be THICK on this bitch too. Twists, turns, DRAMA. And the writing is downright poetic.

Sometimes compliments to the chef is not enough. I need to go in that kitchen, and fuck the chef. Sierra, consider yourself warned.
