Rate this book

Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling is a globally recognized coach, consultant, and bestselling author—renowned for his expertise in the fields of personal, professional, and social development, as well as holistic enhancement and renewal of coherent expression and perception experiences. With a background in engineering and communication sciences and decades of anthropological studies, the author draws on his vast perspectives regarding general human interactions and authentic, holistic forms of a genuinely positive and fulfilling way of life. As a globally recognized consultant, mediator, and troubleshooter, his reach on social networks has now grown to tens of millions. Although it represents only a smaller aspect of his many activities, KFH also became globally known for his unique, revolutionary, completely peaceful approach to working with horses—where he refers to the primal principles of non-verbal communication in terms of personal character and holistic growth. By helping people continuously develop their heightened awareness of body, senses, and mind, his approach is fundamentally different from other well-known systems. His childhood in the seclusion of the forests of his homeland gave KFH, as an author, a unique life perspective, enabling him today to articulate the subtleties of human experiences and the natural world with rare clarity. Born in Germany, the author has lived in Denmark for the past two decades, where he also runs his consulting organization.

"Personality typing for horses"

A bit gimicky, but then I'm also skeptical of personality typing for people too. This book has a lot of beautiful pictures and does provide a starting point for understanding Hempfling's approach to horses (which is quite compatible with my own).

As with all frameworks, there is a tendancy to want to make an individual fit into a box and once that happens, there is a tendency to funnel your observations and experiences through the lens you've just created.

Proceed with caution: Jung founded personality typing for people and prefixed it with a note that he could have described hundreds of discrete personality types, not just the 15 you hear thrown around today. Same thing here. This book will be most valuable to you if you use it as another piece in the toolkit and think of the 'types' as more like moods, i.e. transient in nature. This book will be least valuable if you go through the checklist, try to make a classification of your animal and then proceed on the assumption that the box you've placed him in is correct.

As always, remain present with your mind and aware of your own agendas and motivations as they impact your horses.

26 possible personality types for horses? No, I do not believe this hypothesis to be true, but I sure enjoyed Hempfling's arguments for it. And either way, he's someone I'd trust with horses, so he gets to come up with and argue ideas as much as he likes as far as I'm concerned.

So much information - i am sorry to say I have a prejudice against Hempfling (even though I completely admire him) because he basically says that Quarter horses are deformed and their personalities are to be pitied. BUT! He knows horses and his personality break down is terribly interesting.
