I started this book on a random Tuesday evening thinking I’d read two chapters. I ended up finishing it before sunrise. That’s the kind of grip Beyond Boundaries had on me.
Milo’s imaginary friend, Henry, doesn’t feel like a gimmick. He’s almost too real, to the point where you forget there’s supposed to be something “supernatural” about him.
Carter makes their connection so believable that you want Henry to be there — for Milo, and for yourself.
The scenes with Seth, the stepdad, made me clench my jaw. He’s not loud or obvious; he’s the kind of toxic that’s quiet, calculated, and suffocating. I’ve seen people like that in real life, and Carter nails it.
The biggest win for me? The unpredictability. Every time I thought I knew where the plot was headed, the book zigzagged into something entirely different. And the final reveal about Henry’s origins? I literally sat up in bed.
It’s part mystery, part emotional gut-punch, and part late-night fever dream. And it works.

I could not put this book down! I read it in just a few hours, and I was so hooked I even found myself reading while eating dinner 😂.
The story follows Milo and his imaginary friend, Henry. Henry is written so vividly that you almost forget he isn’t real — I loved how natural and believable his presence felt.
Milo’s childhood chapters were tough to read at times, but that’s a testament to Carter’s writing. It pulled me in emotionally and made me really feel for the characters.
I had absolutely no idea where this story was going. Without giving away spoilers, the ending completely blindsided me — especially the truth about Henry. It was such a powerful twist.

I related to Milo more than I expected. Growing up, I often escaped into daydreams when reality felt too heavy, so when he clung to Henry as his safe place, I understood. The difference is for him, the safe place came back years later, as a living, breathing person. That idea alone fascinated me.
Carter’s descriptions are vivid without being overdone. The fear in the scenes with Seth made me uneasy, almost like I was the one sitting at that tense dinner table. The warmth of Frank and Elizabeth’s pub felt like stepping into a place where bad things couldn’t follow you. The sadness in Henry’s search for his own identity stayed with me long after I finished reading.

I don’t often read psychological thrillers. However, the blurb for this short novel stole my attention. From page one I was absolutely hooked on the storyline, the characters and the fast pacing of the book. I finished this book in one sitting and had to spend a moment staring at the ceiling afterwards.
George Carter has a fantastic way of drawing your attention in quickly and holding it there, providing the reader with plot twists that feel natural and fluid.
Albeit a short story, this doesn’t stop you from falling into the lives of each character and enjoying the bonds made along the way. This was a fantastic blur of childhood fantasies mixed in with real life. I truly enjoyed this read and I would recommend it to anyone. But, make sure you bring tissues!

I don’t think I’ve ever been this caught off guard by a book. Beyond Boundaries was supposed to be a casual weekend read. Instead, it pulled me into Milo’s life so intensely that I forgot I wasn’t actually part of the story.
What I loved most was the emotional honesty. Milo’s childhood isn’t painted in extremes but it’s quiet, lonely, and heavy with moments that made me remember my own rough teenage years. When Henry appeared, first as an imaginary friend, then as something far more tangible, I felt the same relief Milo did. Henry didn’t just protect him; he gave him something to believe in.
George Carter understands suspense, but he also understands restraint. He doesn’t give everything away, and that’s what made me read “just one more chapter” until there were no chapters left. The twists weren’t just plot devices, they felt like emotional detonations.
By the final page, I had tears in my eyes, not because the ending was sad, but because it was satisfying in the way a deep breath after a storm is satisfying.

This tiny book definitely packs a punch! In 52 pages A LOT happens, and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked. It difficult to say too much about the plot without giving anything away!
Milo goes from being an innocent kid who's had a tough childhood, to someone who finds himself embroiled with the wrong guys. How will he get himself out of the mess? And how does his imaginary friend from his childhood come into it?
I thoroughly enjoyed the concept of this. I did foresee the first twist, but didn't see the rest coming and was blown away by the rest. The story is quite tragic in places, and honestly is just packed full of action.
My negatives: I actually feel like this could have been LONGER. So much happens, some of the story could have been built up a bit more to make it even more impactful. Also, there were quite a few grammatical/spelling errors in it, which are unfortunately a bug bear of mine. Though saying that, it didn't detract from the story.
Overall, a great little read, full of action that won't leave you bored for a second! 3.5 stars.

So I wasn’t even planning to read tonight but I opened page one and BOOM three hours gone. My chai went cold. my brain went into “must protect Milo” mode instantly.
The psychology in this?? scary accurate. Like, Milo’s mind creating Henry as a shield? Textbook survival strategy. But then Henry showing up in the real world later?? My brain’s still trying to process.
