I could not put this book down! I read it in just a few hours, and I was so hooked I even found myself reading while eating dinner 😂.
The story follows Milo and his imaginary friend, Henry. Henry is written so vividly that you almost forget he isn’t real — I loved how natural and believable his presence felt.
Milo’s childhood chapters were tough to read at times, but that’s a testament to Carter’s writing. It pulled me in emotionally and made me really feel for the characters.
I had absolutely no idea where this story was going. Without giving away spoilers, the ending completely blindsided me — especially the truth about Henry. It was such a powerful twist.

I related to Milo more than I expected. Growing up, I often escaped into daydreams when reality felt too heavy, so when he clung to Henry as his safe place, I understood. The difference is for him, the safe place came back years later, as a living, breathing person. That idea alone fascinated me.
Carter’s descriptions are vivid without being overdone. The fear in the scenes with Seth made me uneasy, almost like I was the one sitting at that tense dinner table. The warmth of Frank and Elizabeth’s pub felt like stepping into a place where bad things couldn’t follow you. The sadness in Henry’s search for his own identity stayed with me long after I finished reading.

I don’t often read psychological thrillers. However, the blurb for this short novel stole my attention. From page one I was absolutely hooked on the storyline, the characters and the fast pacing of the book. I finished this book in one sitting and had to spend a moment staring at the ceiling afterwards.
George Carter has a fantastic way of drawing your attention in quickly and holding it there, providing the reader with plot twists that feel natural and fluid.
Albeit a short story, this doesn’t stop you from falling into the lives of each character and enjoying the bonds made along the way. This was a fantastic blur of childhood fantasies mixed in with real life. I truly enjoyed this read and I would recommend it to anyone. But, make sure you bring tissues!

The twist was absolutely brilliant. I didn't see it coming at all, and when the truth was revealed, everything clicked into place.
