Gabriele Boccaccini created a fantastic work showing the different types of Judaism between 300 B.C.E. to 200 C.E. In so doing, he manages to demonstrate that Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism, were nothing else than two different sub-varieties of Judaism at the time. During the Roman and Hellenistic Period we cannot talk of judaism but of judaisms with different ideas, sects and world views. Chapter 1 alone is worth the read as he explains this new term "Middle Judaism" to explain this time and also reviews the bibliography about the period. Read it together with Daniel Boyarin books for the maximum Second Temple Judaism experience!
