Rate this book
A wickedly comic feminist mystery about the dark side of a hopeless romantic's seemingly perfect love story. A must-read for fans of The Cheerleaders!

"Whip-smart… A thrilling romp from start to finish."—Jessica Goodman New York Times bestselling author of They Wish They Were Us

Alyson is a romantic, and sometimes it gets her into trouble. Like last summer, she thought her co-worker was into her, when in reality he found her flirting pathetic.

Then she meets Brenton Riggs Jr., and right away she knows that their connection isn’t just in her head. When he swoops in to save her one night from a less than savory party encounter, she falls head-over-heels. Finally, someone Alyson likes who likes her back!

But when she finds out about the King’s Cup—a competition the guys at their boarding school started to see who has the most sexual prowess—she’s put on edge. Does Brenton really want to be with her, or is he just trying to win? Then Alyson and the other girls at the school start a competition of their The Queen’s Cup. It’s all about reclaiming their power. But as the competition heats up, Alyson’s relationship begins to fall apart—and it isn’t long before the cracks in her perfect love story start to show through.

Jordyn Taylor' s "Revenge Game" in question offers an absolutely fast-paced, entertaining, and engaging reading experience that keeps you hooked from start to finish, ensuring you never feel bored and maintaining your unwavering interest throughout. While it leans towards a lighter and somewhat predictable side as a YA thriller, its incorporation of romantic vibes paints a realistic portrayal of the predicaments faced by young adults. Moreover, it fearlessly delves into important and sensitive subjects, including LGBTQ themes, sex positivity, feminism, mutual consent, and harassment.

Centered around Allyson, a protagonist seeking true love despite her past heartbreaks, the story takes an intriguing turn when she encounters her ideal match made in heaven, Brenton Riggs Jr. However, Allyson soon discovers that there's a high-stakes competition at her boarding school, known as the King's Cup, where guys compete to seduce girls and score points. Suspicion arises as she realizes she might be just another pawn in her so-called lover's game.

Not to be outdone, the girls at her boarding school devise their own version of the game, titled the "Queen's Cup," proving that power dynamics and rising sexual tension are not confined to one gender. As the power game escalates, the characters are propelled into an unexpected and dangerous world they never knew existed.

Without revealing too much, it can be said with confidence that this book is riveting, highly enjoyable, and perfect for a night of quality escapism. While the final twist may be somewhat foreseeable, it still earns a solid 4 stars for its well-paced narrative and its daring exploration of sensitive issues that sets it apart from other books in the same genre.

yall what did i just read?! like truly I need someone to tell me rn what is this?! im flabbergasted at this book. I started this off thinking it was gonna be some fun preppy romance book and somehow I managed to misread the whole book summary 🤦‍♀️ like yall what is wrong with me bc I wasn't expecting this to be a crazy mystery book with a whole bunch of wild mess

like for starters the game…yall why you gotta have this game to see who can “score” the most points in the kings cup game to see who has the most sexual prowess  like whatever happened to NORMAL relationships just you know the cutesy cheesy stuff is that too hard to ask?....apparently so!! thats disgusting and literally let me just say there is a me before this book and a me after and a me in between like halfway through I was like the game is so stupid and disgusting like WHY? what possessive the male population to be so gross and crazy like why can't yall just be normal like at least one guy..BUT NO…they gotta do stupid stuff but like ive heard before “you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes” aka the prize is you being dumped and embarrassed so I don't want to hear it 🤚

the game thing bothered me a lot in the beginning but I was sitting here listening praying to God like briggs better not be in this game or someone is about to a crazy person like I was hoping so bad it took to like the prom parts for me to be like okay he isn't bad he isn't a part of it like he wouldn't do all that craziness in the game he wouldn't say the l-word just all willy nilly he wouldn't ask her to be his girlfriend just cause he wouldn't just bump into her at a party to just to prey on her he wouldnt ask her to prom and buy her stuff and take her to her prom and be a complete jerk

*ME WHEN IM IN DENIAL!!!!!!!*

2-1/2 Stars, rounded up to 3

The Revenge Game has everything that should have made it an awesome choice for me . . . it’s billed as a YA mystery/thriller, wickedly comic, with a feminist theme. However, somewhere along the line it didn’t deliver.

One of the things I love most about YA books is that they hook you right from the off. TRG never really did it for me. It was enjoyable enough, and an easy read, but I found that could put it down and not feel a rush to pick it back up again.

As far as the mystery/thriller angle . . . well I’ll give you the mystery part (although it was predictable) but it isn’t a thriller IMO. At least not like any of the thrillers I normally read. There is a conflict that served to drive the plot to be sure, but there isn’t a number of twists or any cliff hangers between chapters. Additionally, I didn’t feel any escalating tension. Also, I must have missed the “wickedly comic” bits I guess?

What I really enjoyed was the feminist themes, the spotlight on toxic masculinity, and the honest conversations about sex and their bodies.

The Revenge Game was perfectly fine book; a weekend diversion. I liked it enough that I’d give the author another read, but I finished the book feeling like it could have been so much more than it was.

Thank you to NetGalley for the digital ARC.

Hmm. A fun, quick read that had you guessing and ultimately a horrifying look at men and toxic culture, buuuut it just wasn’t THERE? There was a lot of stuff in between that felt boring and it was already a short book so I’m not even sure what could’ve been taken out and yet. Also I did not like the ending because it just came out of nowhere! There should have at least been curiosity or some ✨lingering touches✨ to give some insight but this felt like it was tacked on because…men suck so what else will we do but date each other?

This was a FANTASTIC YA feminist revenge story featuring a romance loving teen lead who falls for the hot jock and swears he's the good guy everyone believes only to find out she's been duped. Full of great humor, biting honesty and girls bringing down the teen boys that do them wrong.

I loved EVERY second of this read and can't wait to read more of this new to me author's backlist right away. Highly recommended for fans of Margot Mertz, a Good girls' guide to murder or Veronica Mars. Many thanks to @prhaudio for a complimentary ALC in exchange for my honest review!

DNF at page 48

• I won’t even bother writing an actual review because this book is beyond a headache to read. I said i refused to DNF it but i LIED! It’s just not good. and this is the first time i’ve read a book i legitimately did not like and felt it was a PAIN to read. I hate forcing myself to read things and i hate that i just couldn’t go any further. I got the arc and well let’s just say it’s a good thing that i didn’t wait and actually buy it. This is another reason i stay away from high school ya books. The protagonist is boy crazy, the writing is excruciating annoying, and if i could pluck those 48 pages out my mind i would.

Was it good? No. Was it entertaining. Hell yeah. Probably a 2.5 ⭐.

This was mostly a romance and a bit of mystery, I don't think it's a thriller. Also, Trigger warning for sexual assault, since the book has sex and mutual consent as one of the bigger themes throughout.

I found myself yelling at Alysson, she definitely would benefit from some therapy. I also felt like the plot was not strong enough to carry the book and needed more. But I loved the setting, the drama and the funny one-liners. Kudos to Sam.

The Revenge game by Jordyn Taylor releases November 7, 2023.

Alyson is bit of an insecure girl, she loves reading and reads lots of romance books. It’s safe to say she’s a hopeless romantic. Now that her all girl private school is fusing with an all boys private school she is stoked about being around boys more and desperate to experience the things she’s been reading about.

I really enjoyed reading this books. It was a light read while also dealing with serious topics like sexism, feminism, insecurities as a teenager, setting boundaries and opening up about difficult situations.
The story has a dual timeline, one from right after the fusion and one from a few months ahead when someone from the school has gone missing after prom.
As the story evolves it becomes more and more clear how that missing case ties to Alyson and the schools merging.

It’s fast paced and the mystery elements will keep you engaged to the story from the beginning till the end.

I really liked Alyson as a maincharacter. I liked how she wasn’t mainstream, how she is a bit of a nerd and above all a hopeless romantic. Her yearning for a romantic life felt quite endearing. I remember having the same thoughts as a teenager and I think a lot of people will be able to resonate with her.
Alyson isn’t naive however, she is aware of how boys (especially around that age) can be and doesn’t want to be taken advantage of. I love how being desperate for romance doesn’t equal tolerating everything and just having boys walk all over you. Alyson is aware of her selfworth and where her boundaries lie and they aren’t up for negotiation.

The side characters remain a bit flat, there’s not really much that makes them stand out. I do feel like that was appropriate for the story, the focus is on Alyson and on girls in general sticking up for themselves and creating a bond of sisterhood.

All in all I can really recommend this book. It’s a great read and especially if you like contemporary, mystery, high school setting and/or stories about feminism you’ll have a great time reading this.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Says it is a YA mystery/thriller, that offers wicked comedy on a feminist theme.

It was ok, but I failed to see the wicked humor, I got the feminist theme... nothing strong on any point. I guess it wasn't really my jam.

Happy Reading!

This took me a while to get through, mainly because I wasn’t feeling like I needed to know what happens. The narrator did a wonderful job, but it was more about the story. It was a thriller/mystery where you could see the big twist coming from a mile away. I was a bit disappointed in the FMC because she chose to overlook the red flags everywhere to see the romance that she was dying to have. I know she’s in high school, but dang. the best part about this was the cover, I loved finding the crowns in the lipstick stains ❤️

Alyson is starting her junior year and this year her prep school merged with the boys equivalent. So she has a shot to get more interaction with boys. Her only interaction over the summer didn’t go well. She wants to be a romance writer, and with romances as her only clue as to how those interactions should go, the guy just thought she was weird. That all changes when she is paired up with the star lacrosse player in her advanced English class. He saved her from his bro dude teammate and actually cares about what she has to say. And is interested in her! This is her big love story unfolding, right in front of her eyes. Until other girls start finding out their boyfriends are competing in a competition to get the most points in a game called The King’s Cup where they get points for each base they get to, more points for the farther they get girls to go. But her boyfriend isn’t in that. He can’t be.

Thank you to PRH Audio and NetGalley for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

I didn't expect to like this as much as I do, but personally, I'm a bit torn on my rating.

The Revenge Game is about Alyson, a junior at her elite prep school whose big dream is to fall in love. Despite her hopeless romantic tendencies, she's never had a boyfriend until senior Brenton Riggs Jr. gets partnered with her in English and they both fall madly in love. Riggs is her first real boyfriend and everything is sunshine and rainbows until her best friends find out that the boys on campus are participants in the King's Cup: A game that originated on campus in the 80s where guys get points for how far they go with girls and whoever has the most points by the end of the year is considered the King. With the girls feeling betrayed Alyson and her friends decide to create the Queen's Cup, where girls publicly reject the men participating in a way to take back the narrative. Alyson isn't sure Riggs is in on it as he's the perfect guy: Tall, handsome, captain of the lacrosse team, and soooo romantic. But when lies and secrets surface Riggs goes missing.

On one hand, I couldn't stand this novel, but on the other, I had such a good time. To begin with the negatives, for the majority of the novel Alyson was NOT a girl's girl!!! Anytime one of her friends got betrayed by a boy she would just be like "OMG thank goodness Riggs isn't like that!" or "I wish they had a boyfriend like Riggs." If she opened her eyes for three seconds and saw that 1) Riggs is just a guy and 2) her friends needed her support, maybe I would have liked her more, but some scenes with her, especially towards the beginning, ENRAGED me. I understand that we have all lowered our standards for shitty men in the past and are blind to how AWFUL they are and we only bring it to light to our friends once we've broken up so our friends didn't hate them at the time, but GIRL.

In better news, I loved the overall positivity of this book. The girl power is so phenomenal and I often times find YA novels to shy away from topics like sex, sexual assault, and other content within this book, but I loved how sex-positive this book was along with how respectful Jordyn Taylor was about how teenagers have emotions and hormones and it's okay for that to be expressed. Not once did I feel like Alyson was slut-shamed without it pertaining to the plot for being open about sex and other sexual activities.

I also loved the friend group, the ending, and the format of this novel. To start with her friends, they are one of the BEST girl groups I've witnessed in YA contemporary. The ending was also so sweet and I was genuinely rooting for that storyline from the beginning! THANK YOU, JORDYN TAYLOR! Finally, the formatting of the novel keeps you intrigued. It's told between transcripts, social media posts, and journal reports during the present timeline, and in the past it's told in Alyson's POV.

Overall, I thought I was going to unhaul this ARC copy afterward, but if you like a good junk-food type of read this is PERFECT! I think I'll be keeping this copy around for awhile until I feel like passing it along. :)

So, I knew this was a feminist heavy book. Maybe it isn't my cup of tea. But it is closer to 2.5 rather than a 3, but I will round up. Not necessarily for the ra, ra, ra woman, men bad. I tried to get through this by viewing the story as a myth or fable, but in the end, I just wanted it to be over. It was predictable, every single male character other than 'dads' were horrible. Every single woman was a victim or hero. There were no surprises, just pages of overwritten cliches that failed to land as serious. I think the premise deserved better and thought it would be more serious story telling. It somewhat reminded me of a Secret History but lacked the depth and complexity of its characters. I guess the word is superficial, showing all the virtues without the necessarily and serious work of earning them.

3 stars because it was entertaining enough for me to finish it in a single day, i liked the setting, and i liked that in the end, the boys got what they deserved.

i went to an all girls private high school and honestly could imagine myself in this book which was really fun. alyson, the main character, was just a little TOO boy crazy and definitely not a girls girl :/ i understand she's a teenager but CMONNNNN your boyfriend at the end of the day is still a BOY.

this book was described as "wickedly comic" and i have a question do people who write these blurbs know what humor is because i don't recall laughing at all while listening to it??

When Alyson’s all girl boarding school merges with the nearby all boy school, she learns about a contest the boys play where they receive points for sexual activity. In response orchestrates the Queens Cup, where girls set out to humiliate the boys with public rejection. Believing her boyfriend Riggs is one of the good guys, she hides her participation in the club.

I’m not a big fan of revenge or that the ends justify the means. I’m more of a two wrongs don’t make a right school of decorum. Humiliation isn’t okay, even for bad guys. I normally wouldn’t have chose a book called THE REVENGE GAME but for Jordyn Taylor being the writer and the setting being a boarding school.

Taylor’s writing and word building are the strongest part of THE REVENGE GAME. I didn’t care for Alyson because she expected others to do the heavy lifting for the Queens Cup to look innocent to her boyfriend and because she spearheaded the Cup. I loved the way Taylor set up the novel, interweaving past and present with news reports.

The ending disappointed me with the adult who was involved and the new couple at the end that came out of left field. The audible narration was very good.

I was so happy to finally be reading another Jordyn Taylor book! I don’t know why, but I find her YA books super enjoyable no matter the genre/sub-genre. This one is probably my least favorite of her 3, only because the plot was a bit predictable, but I can’t help but love the feminist themes JT includes and watching the girls get their revenge over the boys by the end of the story. If Jordyn Taylor (my name twin) keeps writing books, I’ll keep picking them up!

Found this looking for a crime mystery book but was subjected to a really cringe story about American teenagers falling in love. This was ridiculously unrealistic and infuriating with how thoughtless the main character was. The plot was so obvious the whole time and the climax was way too fast. By the time it got crime-like, the book was basically over. Do not reccomend

An entertaining albeit predictable YA thriller that’s heavy on feminism and taking down the patriarchy. It’s a breeze to read, but it made me want to scream at the naivete of the main character.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own.
I’m a sucker for a solid revenge-themed thriller, and The Revenge Game fits the bill perfectly. And I love the way it tackles serious topics, like the rape culture in elite academic settings and how the rich and powerful inevitably are protected, including an interrogation of the prevalence of the “promising young man” archetype in praise of alleged assailants (evoking creepy reminders of the coverage of the Brock Turner case, among others). Even before I fully knew the turn the story would take, I already loved the way the story set this up, opening with the first of several interstitial mixed-media interviews and news articles, discussing the missing rich white boy’s alleged perfection.
Alyson is a compelling heroine to follow, because she treads the line between being fiercely feminist and a hopeless romantic. She loves romance novels, and is very much susceptible to the romantic attentions of someone she’s also interested in. But while she does let that cloud her judgment, she also navigates the question of whether her boyfriend, Riggs, truly is “not like other guys” throughout the book. With critical distance from him as the reader, it’s somewhat easy to see that he’s a bit too good to be true, but I also couldn’t help but hold out hope that he was indeed genuine, and not pulling some long con.
In that regard, the story proceeded somewhat predictably, but it was no less gutting when the reveal happened, because of how invested I was in Alyson’s happiness, not to mention just the callous nature of the reveal. And while the “revenge” didn’t go as far as I initially thought it would, I feel the book was effective in showing that the point wasn’t to exact any real vengeance, especially if it would jeopardize the promising futures Alyson and the other girls could have. And in that respect, I appreciate that the ending wound up resolving the wider systemic issue at the school, creating a safer environment not just for them, but for future students.
One aspect I find myself confused about is the resolution for Alyson’s relationship with her friend Jess. They have a solid friendship throughout the book, and I didn’t think too much about them being anything more than that. But all of a sudden, when someone mistakes them as a couple at the end, suddenly they look at each other differently for the first time, and Alyson even says, “The thought just hit me.” I know it might be realistic for teens to fall in love fast, and given Alyson’s history, it does track, but given how long she’s know Jess, it just felt like it came out of nowhere, and I wanted a little more buildup, or just slight acknowledgment, from at least one of them!
Minor quibble aside, I really respect what this book is trying to do. I recommend this if you’re into feminist thrillers, especially those with a high school setting.

Alyson, the high school junior, protagonist of this book, is a hopeful romantic. She even wants to write romance novels someday after attending a prestigious college with a first rate literature and writing department.

Her problem? She comes across to the first boy she’s interested in as desperate and, after she overhears him talking about her not in a good way, she determines to be more cautious as she moves on from this embarrassment.

But her resolution doesn’t last long. The first day of the new school year, she finds herself attracted to a senior lacrosse superstar. To her astonishment, her teacher pairs her with him for a class project.

Before she knows it, she finds herself falling for him as they seem to hit it off immediately. He’s kind and sexy and nothing like she thought he might be as the big man on campus. They seem to have a lot in common even though she is a library nerd and he’s a sports star.

At a camping trip with other students, one of Alyson’s friends overhears a conversation with some of the boys. It seems they have a contest going called the King’s Cup. Points are awarded to the young men for various acts related to the opposite sex.

Upon learning of this, the girls set up a Queen’s Cup for dumping boys publicly because of this point system.

Alyson is sure her lacrosse player, Riggs, isn’t part of the King’s Cup. He even tells her he thinks it’s a stupid game.

She helps her friends with their plans for the Queen’s Cup and is pretty much the ringleader of the quest to expose the boys in the King’s Cup to ridicule. But she is relentless in her belief in Riggs. She feels sorry for the other girls that they can’t find a true and loyal boyfriend.

As the book progresses, the book moves from flashbacks of Alyson and Riggs during the school year to various news reports of Riggs being missing after the prom in May.

The way the author moves the story from time to time is seamless and intriguing. We as the readers know something bad may have happened to Riggs and the story keeps us turning pages to see what occurred to cause his disappearance.

Alyson is likable and funny. She’s a well-rounded character with a few blind spots but, she’s a teenager, so that’s expected. I enjoyed her and her personality. I liked she had a good family relationship and loyal friendships.

The last chapter seemed a bit off for the character to me but that’s really my only issue with the story. I didn’t think it rang true for the character we’d learned about in the rest of the story.

An enjoyable, intriguing read with a unique presentation. And it ticked a lot of boxes for our times, including feminism, family dynamics, date rape, and empowerment over misogyny in a boarding school environment.

Thank you to Random House Children’s Books/Delacorte Press and NetGalley for this ARC.

Guess I was wrong. I fucking loved this book! At first i didn’t really have high hopes because in the first 20 pages the FMC acted like the worst case of the pick-me disease i had ever seen. Plus she was delusional as fuck. Hell i even highlighted quotes, WHICH I NEVER DO!

Examples:
« Ideally, what i want is for a guy to pick ME. »
« i mean, I’d read enough enemies-to-lovers plot lines to know that guys often teased you when they secretly liked you … he still insisted on critiquing my reading material, i figured our spark was alive. »

However, despite my initial bad feeling, the story seemed interesting enough to continue reading and i don’t regret it. Especially because she completely changed her personality and became the confident feminist i was promised, but also because the story ITSELF represented feminism. It also raised awareness about rape and exposed the people protecting the aggressor instead of the victim as well as school systems who often do nothing about these things. Anyway, this is one of the best books I’ve ever read and i have to thank my bestie Marianne who got it for me on Christmas 😘

This fast-paced feminist thriller centers around romance enthusiast Alyson amidst the merging of her all-girl's private school with an all-boy's private school. After a summer of trying (and failing) to win the affections of a coworker, Alyson sees this merge as a desperate opportunity (emphasis on desperate) to live out the romance novels she loves to read.

I appreciated how Taylor addresses subjects like feminism, LGBTQIA+ inclusivity, sex positivity and consent while also driving forward the plot. There is a lot of time-hopping between each chapter; while Taylor addresses the fast-forward by dropping details, I found it a little hard to follow/the time jumps resulting in a choppy plot.

TRG was a fast-paced read, and definitely one I would recommend to my students as this is right up many of their alleys (romance, mystery), but as an adult I found myself becoming very frustrated with the nativity of the protagonist.

Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

THE REVENGE GAME is a mystery that is mostly a romance-y type book for most of the novel until closer to the end. There are snippets of the mystery folded into the story, but it’s only revealed right at the very end.

I didn’t find this one to be super fast paced as it felt like it took so long to get to the climax. But, I liked how realistic everything felt with a first love high school type of thinking that Alyson portrayed.

The girls taking revenge on boys who’d used them throughout the book in creative ways was fun to read. I also loved how incredibly supportive every single woman in this book was. Their alliance and commitment to one another made me happy.

I’d give this one a solid 3 stars. I would recommend this one for anyone who like YA mysteries and feminist literature.

Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

YA Thriller with some romance and mystery
So much heartbreak and important but super serious and sensitive subjects
heavy on the feminist theme
this book sounded like it was gonna be a good read for me but the more and more I read it I just wasn't loving it and it did not deliver for me
No w I am not saying not to read this book bc not every book is for everyone and just bc this one wasn't my cup of tea it might be yours
I like to read for fun and not on too many serious topics and there were way too many parts in this book with hot and heavy serious subjects that I just couldn't enjoy it. it was not a fun book for me.

I am glad that I got the opportunity to read this book thanks to the publisher and Net Galley. THe above is my review/opinion, which is honest and voluntary.

This was a good quick YA thriller/mystery read!
The author had me constantly questioning the characters and what was going to happen next!
The twist that concluded the mystery and the ending of book was very surprising and I enjoyed it!
The story follows Alyson Benowitz, a hopeless romantic high schooler with dreams of becoming a romance writer. She falls into her own seemingly perfect love story, but is it all too good to be true?
The girls soon find out about a game the guys at their co-Ed prep school participate in, the Kings Cup- a competition to see who has the most sexual prowess, and start to question everything & feel used. Resulting in the girls inventing their own version, the Queens Cup, and reclaiming their power.
I recommend reading to see how the girls get their revenge, it won’t disappoint!

The Revenge Game is one of those books that immediately pulls you in. It was fast paced, YA read, with thriller elements thrown in.

The FMC, Alyson was likeable enough. The story, overall, was well written and kept my attention -- making me fly through each page.

The ending, however, is where I was extremely disappointed. It didn't feel well planned out? Or maybe just not enough thrill, after all this build up.

I did enjoy the book and would recommend it. But I also hope to read an alternative ending someday!

Thank you NetGalley and Random House for this ARC!

3.5 Stars

Despite the hideously cheap looking cover, this book is fairly decent. It's nothing special, but it's much better than I thought it would be going in. It's got a touch of suspense, opening with a missing person case, and it's got just the right amount of feminist flair. The revenge isn't always that great, but hey, it's better than others written in the same vein (Revenge of the Sluts, I'm looking at you). Not a bad read by a long shot.

NOTE: I was provided with an ARC by the publisher. All thoughts here are my own.
