La Joie de Vivre is Pauline, a young orphan with cousins who casually work to pluck her. It spends all her fortune there, or almost, but not her joy of living. Yet, even faced with impossible love for her cousin, with the permanent sacrifice of her time and life in the service of the sick and suffering, Pauline forces herself to keep this good humor so essential to the house's smooth running.
I wonder how Zola could have the courage to push so hard on such an endearing character, so positive in all respects! Yet, everything, absolutely everything, ends up turning against her, and she stays standing. The meanness and selfishness of the people around her don't affect her.
I will also remember a few pages of a barely sustainable anthology for the young mother: complicated childbirth, very tricky. Incredibly realistic and detailed pages amaze me, given the time and gender of the author.
In short, Zola never ceases to amaze me. Another extremely successful novel, flawlessly sharp, and breathtaking literary beauty!

ثالث لقاء لي مع أعمال هذا الكاتب الرائع " إميل زولا " و كتاباته الواقعية و شخوصه المستمدة من الحياة العادية و تناقضاتها المثيرة .

قصة الفتاة " بولين " الملاك الطاهر النقي و البريء، و التي أدخلت بسبب ظروف الحياة إلى جحر الأفاعي و إلى عرين من مصاصي الدماء، أين قاموا بمص دمها قطرة قطرة حتى آخر نقطة فيه . بولين هي ابنة تاجر ثري تيتمت بموت والدها ووالدتها فانتقلت إلى أسرة " شانتو ". هذه الأسرة التي أصبحت وصية على الفتاة، إنتقلت و هي تحمل بين يديها ثروة ضخمة كميراث لها من والدها التاجر، إنتقلت إليهم و هي صغيرة لا تعرف شيئا في الحياة إسمه الخديعة و المكر أو الإستغلال، إنتقلت و كلها أمل في أن تجد أسرة حنونة تضمها و تواسيها و الأهم من ذلك أن تجد السعادة التي طالما إعتبرتها عنوانا لحياتها و دربا لآمالها بل و هدفا وجب عليها إعطاءه للفقراء و المساكين .

في ليلة عاصفة.. شديدة الرياح أين راح البحر يضرب الشواطئ بكل قوة مستعرضا عضلاته الفتاكة بدأت قصة من الألم و المعاناة .. قصة عنونت بخط واضح جلي " التضحية ".. في هذه الليلة بدأت علاقة الحب بين بولين و إبن عمها لازار إبن عائلة شانتو الوصية .. لازار هذه الشخص الذي يعد مضربا للمثل في الفشل .. فهو و الفشل قرينان متلازمان .. صديقان مقربان . بدأت في هذه علاقة إنتهت بتضحية إنتهت بدورها بمأساة .

بعيدا عن أحداث القصة .. تظهر لنا عبقرية هذا الكاتب الذي مزج بين غضب الطبيعة و شهوة الإنسان للحياة، و كأن هذه الشهوة ما هي إلا جزء من الطبيعة تبدأ بهدوء تليه عاصفة هوجاء مدمرة و تنتهي بسكينة مصحوبة بدمار و خراب فهي شهوة زائلة لا تدوم .. هي ضعف الإنسان الأبدي .. الهوة التي لطالما عانى منها الإنسان و تصارع معها .

لقد صور لنا إميل زولا في هذه الرواية صراعا فلسفيا كبيرا و بطريقة رائعة جدا .. صراع تحت عنوان الحب، الصراع بين بولين التي تحاول أن تعيش لغيرها و تستمد سعادتها من سعادة الآخرين حولها .. و لازار الذي يعيش في قوقعة من الأنانية و الإنفرادية و السلبية .

رواية جميلة تستحق القراءة و التأمل ..لأن أمثال بولين في حياتنا اليومية و على قلتهم يعانون من أمثال لازار الذين كثروا و انتشروا .

J'adore! 😍

Apparently this was van Gogh's favorite novel, prominently featured in two of his paintings. To me, this book is an understated masterpiece. While the scope seems more personal and less ambitious than many of Zola's other entries in the Rougon-Macquart cycle, the emotional impact is huge.

In reflection, this novel seems to me like an adult version of "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein in terms of both its emotional impact and philosophical implications. Highly recommended.

بعيدا عن الأعمال الاجتماعية وروايات التشويق التي اشتهر بها أميل زولا، يقدم هنا رواية إنسانية من الطراز الفريد
هي واحدة من تلك الأعمال التي تدور حول شخصية واحدة بشكل كبير حيث يتغلل الكاتب في أعماقها ويستغرق في رسم ملامحها بنوع من التفصيل فلا يمكنك في النهاية أن تقف موقف المحايد منها، أما أن تتتعاطف معها أو تبغضها، أو تتعاطف معها وتلعن حماقتها كما هو الحال معي بعد قراءة العمل
بولين تلك الفتاة اليتيمة شديدة البراءة والغيرة تقع في فخ محكم لعائلة تمتص كل ما تملكه، ليس فقط من أموال بل مشاعر أيضا، لكنها تقف على قدميها بعد كل صدمة بشكل عجيب لتواصل رسالتها في الحياة، وتترك للقراء الدهشة والاعجاب لقوتها، ومشاعر الغيظ لتضحياتها التي تبلغ حد الحماقة أحيانا
الرواية جيدة والترجمة مميزة، النهاية فقط كانت باهتة إلى حد كبير وافسدت العمل من وجهة نظري

شور زندگی یا لذت زندگی، دوازدهمین کتاب از مجموعه بیست جلدی روگن ماکاره و دنباله مستقیم کتاب شکم پاریس محسوب میشه.
البته عنوان کتاب کنایه آمیزه و هیچ لذت و شوری در این کتاب وجود نداره بلکه داستان درباره بیماری های جسم و روانه که چطوری باعث تشدید فقر و رذیلت در انسان میشن و قربانی هایی که مستحق این سرنوشت نیستن.
مثل همیشه، زولا شخصیت‌ها رو در تضاد با همدیگه قرار می‌ده تا تاثیرات محیط و وراثت بر ذات انسان رو نشون بده. در یک طرف پائولین فوکو قرار داره که انسانی تقریباً خوب و مهربانه و لذت زیادی از جلب رضایت دیگران می‌بره. خوشبختی در نظر پائولین کاملا وابسته به مادیات و بقیه انسان ها نیست بلکه در کمک به مردم برای بهبود زندگیشون خلاصه میشه حتی اگه منابع زیادی هم برای کمک در دسترس نباشه. در طرف دیگه خانواده شانتو ( Chanteau ) قرار داره که پائولین پیش اونا زندگی می‌کنه. این خانواده شدیداً درگیر بیماری و مشکلات مالیه و تنها امیدشون برای پیشرفت و آینده بهتر روی دوش پسر نوزده سالشون لازاره که شدیداً لوس و حق به جانب و خودخواهه. برخلاف خوشبینی و مهربانی بی حد و مرز پائولین، لازار به شکل ترسناکی بدبین و پوچ گرائه و معتقده زندگی بیهوده هست و هیچ دلیلی برای ادامه دادن و ساختن آینده بهتر وجود نداره. بقیه اعضای خانواده هم در حال سو استفاده از مهربانی و محبت پائولین هستن و ذره ذره ارثیه پائولین رو می‌بلعن
داشتن دید مثبت به زندگی خیلی خوبه ولی لزوماً باعث بهتر شدن زندگی نمیشه اما بدبینی بی انتها هم آدم رو به جایی نمی رسونه. در واقعیت، زندگی جلوی پای هر دو گروه به قدر کافی سنگ و مانع میندازه و در پایان داستان هم با وجود اینکه با واقعیت زندگی طرفیم اما همچنان کورسوی امیدی ته تونل بدبختی پائولین وجود داره.
پ.ن: انگار این کتاب جزو کتاب های محبوب ون گوگ بوده و یکی از نقاشی هاش با این کتاب ارتباط داره.

And Pauline was still rocking the child, laughing bravely as she stood in the middle of the terrace, now blue with shadows, between her despairing cousin and her groaning uncle. She had given away all she had, but happiness rang out in her clear laugh.

While this is certainly not one of Zola's major works, it's an interesting 'debate novel' written in the shadow of Zola's mother's death. Pessimism is confronted with optimism but, being Zola, this is not about extremes but calibrates positions along a spectrum from the morbid, neurotic Lazare who cannot find any way to live knowing that some day he will die, to his father M.Chanteau crippled with agonising gout and yet clinging stubbornly to life ('And that wretched creature without hands or feet, who needed to be put to bed and fed like a child, that pitiable relic of humanity whose shrinking life was just one long howl of pain, exclaimed in furious indignation: 'Only a damn fool would kill themselves!' ').

At the heart of the book is Pauline Quenu, a personification, I think, of the joie de vivre of the title: 'she was, indeed, the incarnation of renunciation, love for others, and a goodness extending to the whole of errant humanity'. Being a Zola character, Pauline is no saint: she's jealous, she loses her temper, she desires a married man but she finds a way of being not just content but actively happy despite all that life throws at her.

In the end, it's debatable what Zola is saying and how we should react. For me, while the title is partly ironic, it's also on the side of life - even if this is a book packed with visceral descriptions of human bodies in states of agony from M. Chanteau to his wife, to *that* childbirth scene (which, I understand, was cut from Victorian translations!). Powerful writing: 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Holy crap. This was very good in general, certainly deserving to be much better known and very much not a minor work in the sequence. The issue has been that it is only now we have a good, complete translation. However, what pushes it into the realms of the exceptional is, without giving any spoilers, the way he deals with both female puberty and then childbirth. There is a 20 pages description of a difficult premature birth towards the end of the novel which made my jaw drop in astonishment and admiration. For a 19thc novel, and one written by a man no less, to have such powerful, graphic, sympathetic description of this (and I do mean graphic!) is simply extraordinary.

Πριν αρκετούς μήνες μπήκα στην Πολιτεία να δω αν υπάρχει τίποτα καινούργιο, ή κάποια επανέκδοση. Εκεί που χάζευα, βρήκα αυτό το βιβλίο. Παρότι θα απέρριπτα, όπως και ανέκαθεν απέρριπτα το Ζολά, διότι δε με εκφράζει το νατουραλιστικό ρεύμα, μου έκανε εντύπωση πως προερχόταν από εκδόσεις Οξύ. Οι συγκεκριμένες εκδόσεις δεν ασχολούνται με την κλασική λογοτεχνία, ειδικεύονται μάλλον στη λογοτεχνία τρόμου, επομένως σκέφτηκα πως ενδέχεται να υπάρχει κάποια σκοτεινή πτυχή στο μυθιστόρημα και αποφάσισα να το πάρω. Ωστόσο τελικά ήταν εξαντλημένο. Επειδή όμως το έβαλα κατά νου, έψαξα να το βρω στα παλαιοβιβλιοπωλεία. Όταν τελικά το βρήκα και επειδή είχα αποφασίσει να το διαβάσω, παρότι βρήκα και τις δυο εκδόσεις, εντούτοις τελικά και ενδεχομένως η προκατάληψη μου να είναι λανθασμένη επειδή δεν εκτιμώ την επιμέλεια, το αμπαλάζ αν θέλετε των συγκεκριμένων εκδόσεων και αφού είχα επιλογή προτίμησα τις εκδόσεις Στάχυ.

Όταν το παρέλαβα μαζί με άλλα βιβλία που περίμενα με μεγάλη προσμονή, η αλήθεια είναι πως μου ξαναήρθε η δυσθυμία σχετικά με το νατουραλισμό και το σκέπασα με άλλα βιβλία αφήνοντας το για κάποια στιγμή. Πριν λίγο καιρό που ξεσκόνιζα, το βιβλίο έπεσε κάτω κι όπως το σήκωσα είδα που έγραφε στο οπισθόφυλλο αντί για περίληψη ένα σχόλιο που είχε κάνει για το μυθιστόρημα αυτό, ένας συγγραφέας που εκτιμώ, ο Μωπασάν: << Στην πικρή ειρωνεία της Χαράς της ζωής ο Εμίλ Ζολά περικλείει μ’ ένα θαυματουργό τρόπο όλη την ανθρωπότητα. Στη Χαρά της ζωής γράφει με μεγαλείο την ιστορία μιας συνηθισμένης αστικής οικογένειας που οι δυστυχίες της ζωής έχουν ως σκηνικό τη θάλασσα, την άγρια θάλασσα, όπως η ζωή ανελέητη, σαν κι εκείνη ακούραστη, που ροκανίζει σιγά σιγά ένα μικρό ψαροχώρι χτισμένο στην καρδιά κάποιας απόκρημνης ακτής. Και πάνω απ’ όλη αυτή την ιστορία πλανάται το μαύρο πουλί με τ΄απλωμένα φτερά: ο θάνατος >>.

Στη συνέχεια άρχισα να διαβάζω τον πρόλογο. Μέχρι που καθώς διάβαζα και πήγε το μάτι παρακάτω είδα το όνομα Σοπενάουερ –ένα φιλόσοφο τον οποίο εκτιμώ ιδιαίτερα- όπου γράφει πως ο γιος της οικογένειας επηρεάζεται απ’ τις θεωρίες του Σοπενάουερ. Σ’ εκείνο το σημείο σχεδόν έχω πειστεί να το διαβάσω. Θυμήθηκα τη φράση που προσπέρασα και γυρίζω να την ξαναδιαβάσω: ο πατέρας της οικογένειας πάσχει από αρθρίτιδα. Η απόφαση πάρθηκε, το ξεκίνησα αμέσως.

Θα ήθελα να πω σ’ αυτό το σημείο και το θεωρώ μεγάλη πρόοδο πως έχω φτάσει στο σημείο να το παραδέχομαι ανοιχτά, είμαι η τρίτη γενιά που κληρονομώ την αρθρίτιδα. Ξεκίνησε με τον παππού μου το 1903. Το 1903 είναι κοντά χρονικά με την περίοδο που γράφτηκε το μυθιστόρημα μα ωστόσο στην Ελλάδα δεν ήταν τόσο διαδεδομένα τα πράγματα σχετικά με το τι προκαλεί η αρθρίτιδα. Ήθελα λοιπόν να δω αν σε αυτό το βιβλίο θα γινόταν μια απλή αναφορά ή αν θα έπαιζε ενεργό ρόλο η αρθρίτιδα. Και έπαιζε. Όχι μόνο έπαιζε, αλλά οι περιγραφές των καταστάσεων, των συναισθημάτων του Σαντό, ακόμη και η τάση για το αμαρτωλό φαγητό που όποιος πάσχει από αρθρίτιδα μπορεί να καταλάβει και γιατί υπάρχει και ποιες οι συνέπειες, ήταν όλα εκεί. Επίσης, στο τελείωμα του βιβλίου που κλείνει με μια φράση του Σαντό, είναι χαρακτηριστικό πως στην αρθρίτιδα οι πόνοι είναι ανεξάντλητοι, όσο και η αίσθηση να πέφτουν πράγματα, να χάνεται η αφή, αυτό το να νιώθεις άχρηστος και ωστόσο αν ρωτήσετε οποιονδήποτε πάσχει από ρευματοπάθειες θα σας πει αυτό που λέει κι ο Σαντό, πως πρέπει να ‘σαι χαζός για να μη θες τη ζωή. Έκλαψα με τις αναφορές στην αρθρίτιδα, γιατί είναι κομμάτι της ζωής μου, τόσο με τους ανθρώπους που μεγάλωσα, όσο και που σε ‘μενα εμφανίστηκαν τα συμπτώματα σε πολύ νεαρή ηλικία. Γι’ αυτό και θα ήθελα όσοι θα το διαβάσετε, ή το έχετε ήδη διαβάσει να μην κρίνετε πολύ αυστηρά τη μητέρα Σαντό για τη φαινομενική αναλγησία της. Έχω υπάρξει στο ρόλο του συμπαραστάτη, όσο και στη θέση του πάσχοντα. Είναι δύσκολο να καταλάβουν οι άλλοι το μυρμήγκιασμα, την αγκύλωση, την ακινητοποιήση, τον πόνο που είναι σα να ζεις με ένα βόμβο μέσα στ’ αυτιά και που όταν παύει, αποσυντονίζεσαι, δεν το πιστεύεις. Οι άλλοι, δε σημαίνει πως ποτέ δεν προσπάθησαν, αλλά ο αρθριτικός είναι δύσκολος άρρωστος. Ευτυχώς τώρα πια υπάρχουν φάρμακα που κάνουν τη ζωή πολύ ευκολότερη, παρότι πάντοτε η χημεία έχει τις απώτερες συνέπειες της.

Θα περίμενε κανείς πως ο τρόπος που αντιμετωπίζει ο Ζολά το Σοπενάουερ θα με ξένιζε, ή θα με ενοχλούσε. Το θέμα όμως είναι πως αντιμετωπίζει το Φιλοσοφικό σύστημα του Σοπενάουερ με πολύ μεγάλο σεβασμό και είναι σαφές ότι υπάρχει γνώση του έργου του. Τονίζει όμως ένα πολύ σημαντικό θέμα και προσωπικά του βγάζω το καπέλο: Ακόμα και ένα μολύβι στα λάθος χέρια μπορεί να γίνει φονικό όπλο. Έχουμε λοιπόν τον νεαρό Λάζαρο Σαντό όπου τον μεγάλωσε η μάνα του με ένα πατέρα απών στην αρχή λόγω υποτονικού χαρακτήρα που βολεύτηκε στη γυναίκα του και στα ύστερα χρόνια λόγω της αρθρίτιδας και που είχε ένα διαρκή φόβο πως το παιδί αυτό είναι σαν τον παππού του, δηλαδή μια ευμετάβλητη φύση που κάνει πολλά πράγματα πρόχειρα και φαίνεται πως τον μεγάλωσε με το φόβο αυτό κάνοντας του τα χατίρια και δημιουργώντας φιλοδοξίες για ανώτερες θέσεις, απ’ τις οποίες κράτησε μόνο τη δίψα για μεγαλείο ή αναγνώριση και όχι την ιδέα του σκοπού, του σαφή στόχου. Σε όλα αυτά η οικογένεια ξέπεσε οικονομικά και μετακόμισε σε ένα ψαροχώρι όπου δεν υπάρχει καμιά πιθανότητα για ανέλιξη σε τοπικό επίπεδο και για την ακρίβεια υπάρχει μόνο θάλασσα. Θάλασσα που σε κάθε φούσκωμα της ‘’τρώει’’ το μισό χωριό.

Ο Λάζαρος λοιπόν δοκιμάζει τη μια αποτυχία μετά την άλλη με τη μάνα πάντα να διατηρεί μια στάση του τύπου ‘’δεν πειράζει θα προσπαθήσεις πάλι, ή έφταιγαν οι συνθήκες, ή έφταιγαν άλλοι’’ ακόμη κι αν οι άλλοι είναι εκείνοι που του έδωσαν την ευκαιρία. Παράλληλα πάσχει από κατάθλιψη, το υπαρξιακό άγχος είναι διαρκές. Προσελκύεται στο Σοπενάουερ επειδή τον τραβάει η λέξη πλήξη. Ναι σε μια τέτοια περίπτωση ο Σοπενάουερ είναι καταστροφικός. Το ίδιο όμως καταστροφικά αποδεικνύονται στα χέρια του τα βιβλία της Ιατρικής. Και αυτό είναι το σημείο που θα κάνω μια υπέρβαση γιατί ο Λάζαρος αφήνεται να ζει έτσι με τη διαρκή εντύπωση πως κάποιος συγγενής ήταν έτσι και αυτό δεν αλλάζει. Το ίδιο λέγεται και για τις ζήλιες της Πολίν. Ωστόσο το έργο στην πραγματικότητα δεν είναι νατουραλιστικό, αλλά ρεαλιστικό. Το αποδεικνύει η προσπάθεια της Πολίν, το αποδεικνύουν τα λόγια της Πολίν προς το τέλος του βιβλίου σε Σαντό πατέρα και γιο, ότι όχι το παιδί του ενός και εγγόνι του άλλου, ακόμα κι αν μοιάζει σ’ αυτούς τους δύο, εκείνη θα το μεγαλώσει και δε θα επιτρέψει να γίνει έτσι. Και για να κλείσω το θέμα με το Σοπενάουερ, παρότι δεν είναι πολύ ορατό η ίδια η Πολίν τελικά αντιλαμβάνεται το λόγο του Σοπενάουερ, πως ποτέ και πουθενά δεν ανέφερε το Μάταιο. Άλλο Μηδαμινότητα, άλλο Ματαιότητα. Το ένα φέρνει στο νου αυτό το ως προς τι να ζήσω που αναφωνεί ο Λάζαρος και το άλλο σου λέει να προτάξεις το στήθος μπροστά και να ζήσεις.

Η μητέρα Σαντό λοιπόν είναι δεσποτική, ισχυρή, εκείνη που καθορίζει κι οι άλλοι ακολουθούν. Είναι έρμαιο ενός παρηκμασμένου ‘’ντε’’ στην οικογένεια της και ενός συζύγου άρρωστου με ένα γιο που ψυχανεμίζεται την ευαισθησία και τη μεταβλητή φύση του και που τελικά χαντακώνεται σε ένα χωριό και σαν από μηχανής θεό αποφασίζει να αξιοποιήσει τα χρήματα που κληρονομεί η ανηψιά της και σιγά σιγά προχωράει και σε μεγαλύτερες ηθικές εκπτώσεις που οδηγούν και στην απώλεια της συμπόνιας και της αγάπης για το ορφανό.

Η Πολίν όπως και η Σαντό τελικά είναι η φωνή του Ζολά που προστίθεται στη φωνή άλλων πως η γυναίκα είναι ίση και όμοια με τον άντρα και δικαιούται την ίδια ευκαιρία στη ζωή.

Η Πολίν όμως είναι κάτι πολύ περισσότερο, είναι η αδερφή της Λαμιέλ απ’ το ομώνυμο μυθιστόρημα του Στεντάλ, είναι η αδερφή της κυρίας Γκρασλέν απ’ τον Εφημέριο του χωριού του Μπαλζάκ, είναι η αδερφή της Σαρλότε απ’ τις Εκλεκτικές συγγένειες του Γκαίτε. Γυναίκες που ζητούν τη γνώση, τη μάθηση, τη δραστηριότητα και τη ηθική αναγνώριση, την ικανότητα, το δικαίωμα να χαρακτηρίζονται άνθρωποι στην πράξη και όχι μόνο στα χαρτιά. Απλόχερες, γενναίες, μαχήτριες σε μια πάλη με τα μειονεκτήματα τους. Στην περίπτωση του Ζολά, ενός νατουραλιστή, είναι η ρεαλιστική θεά, η λογική, όχι η τέλεια, αλλά αυτή που προσπαθεί. Η Πολίν είναι η προσωποποίηση της μάχης με το καραμελάκι πως κανένας δε μπορεί να ξεπεράσει το γενετικό υλικό του, με τη νίκη πάνω στην έμφυτη ζήλια και τη φιλαργυρία με όπλο την αγάπη, τη λογική και τη συμπόνια, με πίστη πως ο άνθρωπος καθορίζει ποιος θέλει να ‘ναι. Πολίν: τέλεια ελλιπής και έξοχα ολοκληρωμένη.

Το ψαροχώρι. Τι υπέροχη φράση που αναφωνεί κάπου η Πολίν στο Λάζαρο, να μη γίνεται άδικος, να μη γίνεται κακός, μόνο οι φτωχοί έχουν αυτό το δικαίωμα. Οι κάτοικοι του χωριού έρμαια της εξαθλίωσης τους που όμως κι αυτό είναι πικρά διαχρονικό δε θέλουν ο ξένος, το βουτυρόπαιδο να αποδειχτεί πως θα τους σώσει με μια ιδέα, παίρνουν το μέρος της θάλασσας, τη στιγμή που θα τους συντρίψει εύχονται να διαλύσει την κατασκευή του ξένου. Μα παράλληλα δέχονται την ελεημοσύνη, δείχνουν το χειρότερο τους εαυτό προκειμένου να την έχουν κι η Πολίν ακούραστη να βοηθήσει, όχι για ‘κεινη, γι’ αυτούς. Κι ας μην το καταλαβαίνει ποτέ ο Λάζαρος.

293 – 299 το ψυχορράγημα του Ματιέ νομίζω είναι απ’ τις ωραιότερες και πιο σπαραχτικές στιγμές σε βιβλίο.

340 – 342 άφωνος! Λαμπρή, εκτυφλωτικά βίαιη, στιγμή. Συγκλονιστική κι ανθρώπινη.

421 – 423 Η στιγμή που η Πολίν δίνει πνοή στο μωρό, εκεί που λες πόσο ακόμα να το απογειώσει;

5 αστέρια γι’ αυτό το εκπληκτικό βιβλίο, για την καθαρότητα του.

«Ma vivete! Non è già abbastanza vivere?
La gioia sta nell’azione.»

E’ probabile che accenderò anche la quinta stella per celebrare con un giudizio visivo questo dodicesimo libro del ciclo Rougon- Macquart.
Quattro stelle sono, per me, una valutazione piena;
cinque definiscono qualcosa che va oltre il piacere della lettura e rientra nella personale sfera emotiva.
Mi sono immersa in queste pagine soffrendo assieme a questi personaggi così dilatati dalla penna di Zola; enfatizzati nei caratteri che definiscono ossessioni diametralmente opposte.

Siamo in piccolo villaggio della costa, questa volta.
Abbandoniamo Parigi e il quartiere di Les Halles per recarci al mare.
Bonneville non è affatto un luogo ridente come il suo nome potrebbe far pensare.
E’, al contrario, un piccolo paese di pescatori dove la cecità umana ha edificato in barba alla natura. Una scommessa sistematicamente persa che, ad ogni alta marea, trascina con sé tutto ciò che gli sbarra la strada.

La piccola Pauline (che ne Il ventre di Parigi viveva felice con la sua “grassa” famiglia) è rimasta orfana e viene accolta dagli Chanteau.
Sono parenti mai visti prima eppure da subito si stabilisce tra loro un’intimità affettuosa.
Tutto, forse, andrebbe bene se di mezzo non ci fossero i soldi che infiammano le avide mani di M.me Chanteau.
Pauline, di fatti, arriva con una grossa eredità lasciata dagli avari genitori commercianti...

Una storia che viaggia rasente al confine tra vita e morte e che mette in campo un’apoteosi di caratteri opposti.
Lei, Pauline, si consacra ad un eterno sacrificio di sé pur di far vivere ad altri una felicità che non ha il coraggio di trattenere;
lui, il cugino Lazare vive nel suo fantasioso mondo egocentrico sofferente di un male esistenziale di cui solo lei può guarirlo.
Così ogni gioia troppo accesa rivela una pena nascosta.

Su tutto domina lui: il mare.
Non elenchi descrittivi ma dense rappresentazioni di una natura viva a cui m'inchino:


”Calava la notte dal cielo livido dove i venti infuriati fustigavano il galoppo convulso delle nubi. Non si distingueva più, nel caotico addensarsi delle tenebre, che il pallore dei flutti che si gonfiavano.
Era una bianca schiuma sempre più diffusa, una processione di coltri che si dispiegavano inondando le distese di alghe, ricoprendo le rocce levigate in uno sciabordio dolce e cullante, così vicino ormai da sembrare una carezza.
Ma al largo cresceva il clamore dei marosi, creste enormi biancheggiavano, e un crepuscolo di morte gravava ai piedi delle scogliere su Bonneville deserta, sbarrata dietro le porte; mentre le barche, abbandonate in cima al greto, giacevano come cadaveri di grossi pesci arenati.
La pioggia avviluppava il villaggio in una bruma fumosa, la sola chiesa si distingueva ancora netta, in un angolo cinereo di nubi.”

After writing Nana, Zola had the urge to write something more cheerful, a story about a good person, a contrast to the eponymous figure of Nana. It was to be set outside of Paris, in the countryside, and have fewer characters. A new approach to that written before. He had trouble writing it. His mother died. He had difficulty coping both with her death and his own fear of death. He wrote two other books of the series instead, Pot Luck and The Ladies' Paradise, before he could get back to this. When Zola finally succeeded in completing The Bright Side of Life in 1883, the theme of death, reflecting his own inner turmoil at the time, had come to influence his original plans.

The story does still portray a good, kind, generous and even self-sacrificing central character, Pauline, and it is not set in Paris but instead on the coast of Normandy. The strength and destructive power of the sea, symbolizing the impact of nature, is a central element of the story. Naturalism and realism are, as always, underlying elements of Zola’s writing.

Pauline is an orphan of ten when we meet her. She is neither destitute nor forlorn. She has a substantial inheritance and relatives, a married couple willing to take her in. They live in a fictional, coastal town in Normandy. The inheritance is of course an enticement, and they have a son, Lazare, a few years older than Pauline. We follow Pauline and the family for about fifteen years. There is an outspoken maid and a cat and a dog. The cat and the dog are characters, ever present in the daily life of the family. Forever a naturalist, through these two pets Zola takes the opportunity to contrast feline and canine behavior. A triangle love affair arises. Zola contrasts different personality types, through Lazare's parents and the three lovers--Pauline, Lazare and Louise.

Zola’s difficulty in collecting his thoughts, in getting the story out in words, does however remain. Sections are long and drawn out. The story has strength in parts, but the parts don’t properly hold together. I feel the plot line should have been tightened.

The last quarter of the book gains momentum and is more cohesive. The author’s message takes shape, rising up from the earlier fog. The book draws human behavior realistically. Zola shows how we do behave contrasts with how we logically, philosophically, morally should behave.

This is not a happy book. The title is misleading. What is drawn is by no means the “bright side of life”. The title is to be viewed with irony. The realities of life are not on the side of the novel’s happy, kind, generous person. Nevertheless, living life with a “joie de vivre” attitude has benefits. Living life in this spirit is how life should be lived, despite that having such an attitude will not make life easier. We will not be rewarded, stumbling blocks will be put in our paths, but in this way inner happiness, self-confidence and satisfaction may be attained. This is the message that comes across. There is, however, a heavy dose of pessimism too. I do not wish to mislead you. What is drawn is by no means a sweet, happily ended fairy tale! We are given a picture of reality where, embedded within, are glimmers of hope.

I like Zola’s magnificent portrayal of the sea. The sea represents the majestic, powerful and destructive forces of nature. It is to be viewed as a character, a character that must be contended with.

There is a lengthy episode depicting a difficult childbirth. This stands out for me as a high point of the novel. It is movingly told and packed with in-depth, accurate, deftly interwoven details. Has Zola actually observed a difficult birth? Reading this, one is left with the impression that he has. After completing this review, I have been informed (here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... // message 48) that the Victorian version of the book lacks this episode!

The audiobook begins with a lengthy introduction written by Andrew Rothwell, the translator. It gives both background information, which is interesting, but then goes on to analyze, dissect and interpret plot events. The latter was less to my liking.

Elizabeth Jasicki narrates the audiobook. I could hear her words. It Is not hard to guess at the French words spoken. The speed is fine. Her performance neither adds to nor takes away from the reading experience. I have given the narration three stars.

This isn’t my favorite by the author, but it has some excellent parts. I do not regret reading it. Below I have listed the books of the series in order of preference. Although a series, they can be read in whatever order you like. Each one stands on its own. Pick one where the topic appeals to you.

Ovo jeste roman koji nam kazuje o radosti života samo iz jedne drugačije perpektive, onako suptilno kroz asketsku prizmu glavne junakinje, Poline, koja je kao siroče ostavljena na odgajanje porodici, bližim rođacima njenog oca, u pustom seocetu na obali mora, gdje odrasta prepuštena milosti i nemilosti isfrustrirane tetke, bolesnog strica i anksioznog rođaka, koji joj crpe sve snage, novac i životne sokove, a ipak ta radost opstaje, u tako nemogućim uslovima kao prkosana opomena sve do zadnje stranice. Suštinski, to jeste to. Ovde je to pogotovo iskazano u maestralno poglavlju u kojem je opisan jedan težak porođaj mlade žene pa na dvadesetak stranica pratimo kako se život gasi ali i pali pred prirodnim nagonom za opstanak, zdravim razumom i čistom dušom. Mada isto poglavlje možda i jeste malo netaktično s piščeve strane pa ako ga čitaju mlade buduće majke može izazvati malo zabune i straha :)

Εξαιρετικό…
Καταρχήν ποσό υπέροχο το σύμπαν του Ζολά ενός διανοούμενου της εποχής του με γνώσεις ιατρικής βοτανικής και με εξαιρετική αντίληψη και ανάλυση της ανθρώπινης συμπεριφοράς, με αγάπη για τα παιδιά τα ζώα την φιλανθρωπία και κάθε άλλη πτυχή της ζωής .
Μια οικογένεια από την αφετηρία όπου μπηκε στο σπιτι τους η ορφανή πια ανήψια τους Πολιν μέχρι και την μητρότητα και τη νέα πνοή που μπαίνει στο σπιτι. Θάνατος, αρρώστιες , ανησυχία , διψα για ζωή , απληστία , όραμα και αποτυχίες νομίζω ότι αυτο το βιβλιο έχει τα παντα . Και δεν θα απογοητεύσει τους λάτρεις της ψυχολογίας .
Φοβερή περιγραφή και ζωή στον τοκετό …

Ίσως το μόνο αρνητικο πέρα από το ότι είναι λιγάκι παλιό το βιβλιο και σίγουρα αυτο φαίνεται είναι ότι σε πολλα σημεία ενοιωθα ότι η ερμηνεία των σκέψεων και των δράσεων στερούσε την πνοή και την ζωή της στιγμης στην αφήγηση αλλά επειδή συνολικά με κέρδισαν πολλα δεν θα το λάβω υπόψιν μου στην βαθμολογία .

Ανυπομονώ για τον επόμενο Ζολα που θα διαβάσω ήδη…

Zola begeistert mich zunehmend ob seiner Vielseitigkeit. Die Grundintensität ist allen seinen Romanen eigen. Darüber hinaus scheint jeder Roman ein eigenes Labor, eine Versuchsanordnung zu sein, in der Menschen in ihrem sozialen und ökonomischen Gefüge agieren, strampeln oder passiv dem Ruin entgegen driften.

Die Lebensfreude setzt auf Naturgewalten, Wetter und das Meer, um ein stetiges Hintergrundraunen und Pulsieren zu erzeugen.

"Die rauhe Meeresluft wusch ihm die Gerüche des Studentenviertels ab, er ward wieder Kind bei diesem so gesunden Kinde mit der schallenden Heiterkeit. Alles wurde wiederaufgenommen, alles begann von neuem, die Spiele um den großen Tisch, das Herumjagen in Gemeinschaft von Mathieu und Minouche im Gemüsegarten, die Ausflüge bis zur Schatzbucht und die unschuldigen Bäder unter der Sonne bei dem frischen Winde, der ihnen die Hemden wie Fahnen um die Beine flattern ließ."

Parallel dazu erzählt er in einem zarten Ton, voller Empathie, was für mich völlig neu aus seiner Feder ist.

Wir begleiten Pauline von ihrer Kindheit ins Erwachsenenalter: Wie sie ihre erste Periode bekommt und mit Hilfe eines Physiologiebuches von Lazare aus dem Medizinstudium erfährt, was es damit auf sich hat. Wir begleiten sie auf Abenteuern im Meer, bei Eifersuchtsanfällen, ihrer Liebe zu Lazare, wissenschaftlichen Versuchen, musikalischen Ausflügen und ihrem Aufgehen in einer selbstlosen Opferrolle. Stets ist sie eine große Stütze der Familie, ohne an sich selbst zu denken, die lieber an der Ente spart, als den Armen des Dorfes nicht eine milde Gabe zukommen zu lassen.

Es wird hässlich gestorben, blutreich ein Kind geboren und brutal Krankheiten erlegen. Selbst der Hund schleppt sich lang und leidend in den Tod. Zola wütet wieder dort, wo es weh tut. Lässt Kinder besoffen von der Bank kullern, die nichts im Leben zu erwarten haben. Und am Ende wird das Buch mit einem Selbstmord gekrönt.

Und immer wieder spendet Pauline durch ihr moralisches Handeln und ihre Empathie eine kurzfristige Linderung des Leides. Sie hält Lazare aufrecht, der sich in seinem Pessimismus der Welt gegenüber einrichtet und nichts im Leben zu Ende bringt. Nur das Geld rinnt hinfort. Pauline ist Lebensfreude, und dennoch zeigt Zola knallhart die Grenzen ihres Altruismus auf. Auch sie fixiert die Leidenden in ihrer Situation, ohne den Gedanken an ein systemisches „Darüber hinaus“. Auch sie kann nicht allen helfen, die am Leid der Welt, an der Realität zerschellen.

"Welches Elend! Böses tun, während man das Gute will, das Leben so schlecht kennen, daß man die Leute vernichte, deren Heil man im Auge hat! Sie hatte sicher geglaubt, gut zu sein, ihr Werk der Barmherzigkeit dauerhaft zu machen, an dem Tage, an dem sie deren Freude mit so heißen Tränen erkauft hatte. Sie fühlte eine große Verachtung vor ihrer Güte, weil die Güte nicht immer das Glück ausmachte.... Man hört also nicht auf zu leiden."

Zola ist grandios in der Verdichtung von Szenen. Allerdings gelingt ihm im ersten Drittel keine kohärente Langzeitentwicklung. Die Zeitsprünge sind zu hart und zu groß. Es ergeben sich an ein bis zwei Stellen seltsame Verhaltensmuster der Figuren, die nicht plausibel abgebildet werden. Daher einen Stern Abzug.

Das Besondere dieses Buches liegt für mich darin, dass es trotz seiner düsteren Perspektive immer wieder Nuancen von Hoffnung aufzeigt und eigenartig wärmt, wo nichts zu erwarten sein sollte.

La Joie de vivre a, très provisoirement, les accents d’une belle histoire, un conte de fées.

En effet, en 1880, Zola a quarante ans. Il écrit l’ébauche d’un roman sur « l’idée de bonté et de douleur », mais la mort de sa mère, et celle de Flaubert cette même année lui font interrompre ce projet qu’il reprendra trois ans plus tard.

Pauline Quenu, la fille de Lisa Macquart et de son mari Quenu– dont nous avions fait connaissance dans Le Ventre de Paris, est désormais orpheline. Elle n’a que dix ans, et le conseil de famille, sous la direction d’Aristide Saccard la confie à ses oncle et tante paternels, qui résident à Bonneville, une petite localité côtière du Calvados (peut-être Vierville sur Mer), un village battu des vents et des tempêtes. D’ailleurs, Emile Zola conseillait à ses lecteurs de lire La Joie de vivre après Le Ventre de Paris.

Fascinée par la mer, Pauline s’acclimate très rapidement, et, par sa joie de vivre naturelle, égaye les jours de son oncle Chanteau, accablé par des crises de goutte fort douloureuses. Sa tante Eugénie, de noble extraction, met un point d’honneur à sauvegarder scrupuleusement le patrimoine dont Pauline a hérité à la suite du décès de ses parents et la vente de la charcuterie du quartier des Halles. Tout, ou presque, semble souriant : le chien Mathieu (probablement inspiré du chien Bertrand à qui Zola était très attaché), la chatte Minouche, le cousin Lazare, 19 ans, tous accueillent Pauline, sauf la revêche et taciturne Véronique, fidèle servante du foyer.

Très vite, cette façade idyllique se fissure. Pauline n’est-elle pas, d’ailleurs, arrivée un soir de tempête, dans les ténèbres d’une mer d’encre, une mer, qui, au fil du récit, dévore une à une les modestes maisons des pêcheurs ?

M. Chanteau, progressivement pétrifié par la goutte – Zola ne nous épargne aucun détail, reste en retrait, et c’est Mme Chanteau qui gouverne le foyer. Elle adore et choie son fils Lazare, se fait la complice de ses caprices. Car Lazare est instable, il nourrit une foule de projets professionnels qui, selon l’expression de Zola, avortent les uns après les autres. A chaque projet, Pauline est sollicitée et "prête" de l’argent. Sa tante est un chef d’œuvre de manipulation puis d’inversion accusatoire et de gaslighting : elle dispose d’un pouvoir de persuasion redoutable et sait influencer Pauline jusqu’à la dépouiller de ses économies, au point de la laisser régler les factures des fournisseurs de la famille sans que quiconque ne s’interpose. Seul le médecin de famille, un ancien chirurgien naval, est totalement lucide : « Ils t’ont pris ton argent et ton cœur ». En effet, la manipulation s’exerce avec un tel art, que Pauline, même majeure, même si elle dispose désormais d’une place de gouvernante dans le Cotentin, finit par rester dans ce que le Dr Cazenove qualifie de « guêpier ».

Car Pauline est tour à tour garde-malade, pacificatrice, bienfaitrice pour les enfants du village, issus de familles, ou de restes de familles, dysfonctionnelles. Elle sait apaiser M. Chanteau, mais aussi et surtout Lazare, très affecté par la mort de sa mère qui succombe non sans avoir agoni sa nièce des pires insultes « Tu es entrée ici dans l’unique but de nous dépouiller et de nous assassiner », « la gueuse, je te hais, je te hais ! » Pauline se transforme aussi en aide sage-femme dans le chapitre 10 le plus épique du roman qui raconte, par le menu et avec le plus grand réalisme, un accouchement.

Guy de Maupassant avait lu ce roman en une nuit et avait aimé Mme Chanteau et Lazare, très humains. Je souscris totalement à ses impressions. En effet, le récit emporte le lecteur qui se prend au jeu des personnages. Zola décrit à merveille le processus de manipulation auquel est initialement soumise Pauline, qui devient ensuite l’actrice de son propre destin. Le portrait psychologique d’un Lazare instable et dépressif, hypocondriaque et hanté par la peur est très réussi. Mais il serait illusoire de voir en Pauline uniquement un personnage céleste toute dévouée aux Chanteau. Son abnégation est louable et bien décrite, mais sous cette formidable joie de vivre à toute épreuve couvent des conflits intérieurs autrement plus complexes, faits de jalousie et d’une violence palpable – ancestrale, précise le texte - qui éclatent aux yeux de tous à deux reprises dans le récit. Devenue adulte, Pauline sait dissimuler ses passions auxquelles elle donne libre cours dans le secret.

Nel 1880, infatti, Zola ha quarant'anni. Inizia a scrivere la bozza di un romanzo sull'«idea di bontà e dolore», ma la morte della madre e quella di Flaubert nello stesso anno lo costringono a interrompere il progetto, che riprenderà tre anni dopo.

Pauline Quenu, figlia di Lisa Macquart e di suo marito Quenu, che abbiamo conosciuto ne Il ventre di Parigi, è rimasta orfana. Ha solo dieci anni e, sotto la guida di Aristide Saccard, il consiglio di famiglia la affida agli zii paterni che risiedono a Bonneville, una piccola località costiera nel Calvados che ricorda forse Vierville sur Mer, un villaggio battuto dai venti e dalle tempeste. Affascinata dal mare, Pauline si ambienta rapidamente e, con la sua naturale gioia di vivere, rallegra le giornate dello zio Chanteau, afflitto da dolorose crisi di gotta. La zia Eugénie, di nobili origini, si impegna a salvaguardare scrupolosamente il patrimonio che Pauline ha ereditato dopo la morte dei genitori e la vendita della salumeria nel quartiere delle Halles. Tutto sembra sorridere a Pauline: il cane Mathieu (probabilmente ispirato dal cane di Zola, Bertrand), la gatta Minouche, il cugino Lazare di 19 anni, tutti accolgono la bambina, tranne la scontrosa e taciturna Véronique, fedele servitrice della casa.

Ben presto, però, questa facciata idilliaca inizia a incrinarsi. Pauline, infatti, era arrivata in una notte di tempesta, nell'oscurità di un mare d'inchiostro che, nel corso della narrazione, divora una dopo l'altra le modeste case dei pescatori.

Il signor Chanteau, progressivamente paralizzato dalla gotta (Zola non ci risparmia alcun dettaglio), rimane in secondo piano, mentre è la signora Chanteau a gestire la casa. Adora e vizia il figlio Lazare, assecondandone i capricci. Lazare è infatti instabile e nutre una miriade di progetti professionali che, secondo l'espressione di Zola, falliscono uno dopo l'altro. Per ogni progetto, Pauline viene sollecitata e "presta" denaro. La zia è un capolavoro di manipolazione e di inversione accusatoria e gaslighting: ha un potere di persuasione formidabile e riesce a influenzare Pauline fino a spogliarla dei suoi risparmi, al punto da lasciarla pagare le fatture dei fornitori della famiglia senza che nessuno si intrometta. Pauline è a turno infermiera, pacificatrice e benefattrice per i bambini del villaggio, provenienti da famiglie disfunzionali. Sa calmare il signor Chanteau, ma soprattutto Lazare, molto colpito dalla morte della madre, deceduta dopo aver insultato pesantemente la nipote. « Tu es entrée ici dans l’unique but de nous dépouiller et de nous assassiner », « la gueuse, je te hais, je te hais ! » Pauline diventa anche levatrice nel capitolo 10, il più epico del romanzo, che racconta in modo dettagliato e con grande realismo un parto.

Guy de Maupassant lesse il romanzo in una sola notte e apprezzò molto i personaggi di Madame Chanteau e Lazare, che considerava molto umani. Condivido pienamente le sue impressioni. La narrazione, infatti, coinvolge il lettore che si lascia trasportare dai personaggi. Zola descrive magnificamente il processo di manipolazione a cui Pauline è inizialmente sottoposta e che poi le permette di diventare protagonista del proprio destino. Il ritratto psicologico di Lazare, instabile, depressivo, ipocondriaco e ossessionato dalla paura, è molto riuscito. Tuttavia, sarebbe illusorio vedere in Pauline solo un personaggio celestiale, completamente devoto ai Chanteau. La sua abnegazione è lodevole e ben descritta, ma sotto questa formidabile gioia di vivere a tutta prova si celano conflitti interiori più complessi, fatti di gelosia e di una violenza ancestrale che esplode agli occhi di tutti in due occasioni nel racconto. Diventata adulta, Pauline impara a nascondere le proprie passioni, alle quali dà libero sfogo in segreto.

Μια οικογένεια, η Σαντό, κατοικεί σ ένα ψαροχώρι. Δυστυχώς αυτή η οικία κατακλύζεται από μιζέρια κ στεναχώρια. Ωστόσο, ο κόσμος εκείνης της εποχής χαρακτηρίζεται από κτηνωδία, αμοραλισμό που θριαμβεύουν στη γαλλική κοινωνία αλλά η οικογένεια Σαντό αποτελεί εξαίρεση. Είναι μια τίμια, αστική οικογένεια που μαζί με τον ιερέα και το γιατρό, ξεφεύγουν από το στερέωμα της διαφθοράς και της ανηθικότητας. Ένας πατέρας ανάπηρος που όμως δεν το βάζει κάτω. Η γυναίκα του, σκληρή, ο στυλοβάτης του σπιτιού, και ένας γιος δειλός και άτυχος με ατελέσφορα όνειρα . Όμως, η άφιξη της Πολίν στο σπίτι των θείων της θα δώσει χαρά, αισιοδοξία κ νόημα στη ζωή τους.
Λάτρεψα την Πολίν! Η Πολίν είναι όντως η χαρά της ζωής, θυσιάζεται για όλους. Με την ανιδιοτελή της αγάπη κέρδισε επάξια την συμπόνοια μου. Στάθηκε σε όλους, έπνιξε τον πόνο της, τον εγωισμό της κ τη ζήλια της.
Ο Ζολά αγαπά το υγρό στοιχείο. Ο φόβος μιας πλημμύρας που καταστρέφει ένα χωριό είναι από τα αγαπημένα του θέματα. Το έχουμε δει κ στη νουβέλα του "πλημμύρα". Στα έργα του είναι συχνή η παρουσία του θανάτου, όπως κ εδώ. Η εξαφάνιση αυτού του κόσμου, η αρρώστια που τρώει τα μέλη των οικογενειών, ο χαμός αγαπημένων προσώπων..Σ' αυτόν όμως το χωρίς οίκτο θάνατο οι άνθρωποι παραμένουν αισιόδοξοι, αγωνίζονται κ θέλουν να ζήσουν. Δεν τα παρατάνε! Μηχανεύονται διάφορους τρόπους προκειμένου να επιβιώσουν.
Ένα πικρό και ταυτόχρονα γλυκό μυθιστόρημα που δίνει αξία στην κάθε στιγμή. Όσες δυσκολίες κ να αντιμετωπίζουμε η δύναμη κ η θέλη��η για ζωή τις νικά κ τις κατατροπώνει. Οι δυσκολίες μας κάνουν πιο δυνατούς. 😁👊✊

🏵️🏵️🏵️Το βιβλίο αυτό έχει έναν ειρωνικό και παραπλανητικο τίτλο, ονομάζεται η χαρά της ζωής και μόνο αυτό δεν είναι. Σκοτεινό, καταθλιπτικό και άκρως λυπητερο, αφηγείται την ιστορία της προβληματικής και οικονομικά κατεστραμενης οικογένειας Σαντω, τους οποίους βρίσκουν όλα τα κακά της μοίρας τους και της Πόλιν, της νεαρής ανιψιάς τους, που έρχεται να μείνει κόντα τους από το Παρίσι, έχοντας χάσει και τους δύο γονείς της και διαθέτοντας ένα καλό κομπόδεμα, το οποίο οι Σαντω φροντίζουν να "ξαλαφρωνουν" κάθε φορά που ο γιόκας τους, ένας ονειροπόλος, προβληματικός και φοβικος τεμπέλης έχει την ιδέα να γίνει μουσικός, γιατρός, χημικός , εργοστασιαρχης, συγγραφέας. Κάθε φορά η μαμά του,που έχει μεγάλα όνειρα και φιλοδοξίες για εκείνον, βάζει χέρι στα χρήματα της Πόλιν για να βοηθήσει τον γιο της να πραγματοποιήσει τα μεγαλεπήβολα σχέδια του, που πάντα καταλήγουν στην καταστροφή, γιατί ο Λάζαρος έχει την τάση να πλήττει για όλα, φοβάται διαρκώς τον θάνατο, ζει μες την κατάθλιψη και γενικά το συμπέρασμα που βγάζω εγώ για εκείνον είναι πως πρόκειται για έναν αδιόρθωτο κηφινα, που τα θέλει όλα χωρίς να κοπιασει και να προσφέρει τίποτα, σ'αυτον μόνο να δίνουν πρέπει και αυτός να τους ποδοπαταει όλους.
Η Πόλιν πάλι, είναι ταγμένη στο να κάνει πάντα το καλό, θυσιάζοντας πολλές φορές τον εαυτό της προς όφελος των άλλων. Αγάθη, πρόθυμη και πάντα έτοιμη να βοηθήσει.
Ο πατέρας Σαντω μια βουβή φιγούρα, ρημαγμενη από τους φρικτους πόνους της αρθρίτιδας, χωρίς να έχει λόγο μέσα στην οικογένεια. Η σύζυγος του από την άλλη φιλόδοξη και δυναμική, κρατάει τα ηνία του σπιτιού, κακομαθαινοντας τον γιο της.
"Η χαρά της ζωής" ήταν ένα βαρύ, δύσκολο και καταθλιπτικό ανάγνωσμα με πολλά μηνύματα και εξαιρετική σκιαγραφιση χαρακτήρων, κερδίζοντας ολοθερμα τα 3 αστέρια μου.

I went to bed late last night because I had to finish this book. The final chapters are incredible particularly the birth scene (it must be noted the free Vizetelly translations reduce all the pages of detail to a short paragraph that omits all the pain, anatomy and bodily fluids), it’s so intense and then the ending …. so upsetting. The contrast set up in this novel is between Pauline and Lazare. Pauline, so good, she’s tries to see the best in people, is kind to those around her, overlooks the fact her relatives are wasting her money, overlooks the misery and degradation of the poor to care for them, nurses her uncle through his gout when no one else can cope with his pain; accepts Lazare, the man she loves is in love with another and so much more. She tries to be happy and find good in everything while all around her seem to wallow in the opposite. Lazare is world weary and negative. He can’t stick to any job or study, he stuffs up every opportunity handed to him, he’s bored and constantly thinking about death (except when a nearby house is burning down, his fear disappears and he is the one to enter and rescue a child). And then the relentless sea is a constant presence bearing down on the Normandy town of Bonneville.

Ironically titled “La Joie de vivre”, this is actually one of the darkest and psychologically richest of Zola works. Whereas most of the Rougon-Macquart books have a strong social and panoramic context, “Joie” focuses almost entirely on the purely private setting of a small number of characters in a tiny village on the Normandy coast (the sea telf is a major character in the book — much as in Stephen Crane’s classic ‘Naturalist’ short story, “The Open Boat”.

As the OWC Introduction (Rothwell) puts it: “The Bright Side of Life is something of a neglected masterpiece, with a reputation in France for being one of the finest love stories of the nineteenth century, but not really fitting in with the large-scale canvas of the other Rougon-Macquart books; it sold only slowly, though it was critically well received. Mitterand stresses its significance for our understanding of Zola himself: ‘Far from being a minor novel, The Bright Side of Life stands out as the work most deeply anchored in Zola’s temperament and his private life.’”

But I would put it somewhat differently. First of all, ‘Joie’ is one of the clearest examples of Zola’s conception of ‘Naturalism’ (as opposed to Realism), as his study of Lazare and Pauline (and of the others as well) is simply a close examination or ‘dissection’ (to resort to Zola’s favorite medical-scientific analogy) of the effects of environment on hereditary dispositions — which is the underlying premise of the ‘Naturalism’ that Zola derived from the works of Hippolyte Taine.

(In this way, I would add, “Joie” begins to move away from the more usual ‘roman de moeurs’, and anticipates the ‘roman d’analyse’ of Maupassant; see my review of Alien Hearts)

Moreoever, in the case of Lazare, Zola is particularly interested in examining the way in which the Crisis of Modernity — the death of God — has created the terrible pathology that plagues Lazare throughout his life, and which leads to his particular form of ‘ressentiment’: since we are all going to die anyway, says Lazare, nothing has any value whatsever (esp. ch. 9).

The OWC translation is not bad, but it is a bit stiffer than is necessary. Too bad that Brian Nelson hadn’t done this one.

But the Introduction is sometimes interesting, as in the following passage of Zola’s working methods: “Since The Belly of Paris, Zola had set about the composition of all his novels in the same manner, starting by writing an extensive ‘preparatory dossier’ divided into four main parts: an outline Sketch (Ébauche) of the setting, plot, and main characters; then a section on ‘Characters’ containing a detailed portrait of each (including, in The Bright Side of Life, the dog Mathieu, based on Zola’s own dog, Bertrand, and the cat Minouche), with their main biographical, physical, and psychological attributes; next, a section called ‘Plans’, containing a first plan in which narrative and descriptive elements were provisionally allocated to chapters, then a definitive plan for each, often completed only shortly before the actual writing of the chapter; and finally a ‘Notes’ section containing the fieldwork jottings and other documentation he had gathered to ensure the accuracy and realism of the background information. Chantal Pierre-Gnassounou comments that this highly rational approach, of which Zola made no secret, was intended as ‘an exemplary illustration of the naturalist method’: The planning notes [preparatory dossier] seem to illustrate to perfection the two great principles of naturalist fiction enunciated in Le Roman expérimental: observation (as in the Notes) and experimentation (as in the Outline [Sketch], in which the story is invented).”

How does one come upon making a goal out of reading Zola's Rougon-Macquart cycle of 20 novels, his literary “study in a family [of] the questions of blood and environments…and the whole Second Empire” of France? Here's my story: In summer 2013 I was in San Francisco to attend a good friend's birthday party and didn't plan my reading well for the long return flight home. I had some time to rummage around the famous City Lights bookstore and decided to get something out of the ordinary for me. After an hour of lots of interesting stuff, but nothing that clicked, I thought about the books I read in college that I liked. I had a warm, fuzzy feeling of Germinal and had to place it in the top three of things I read in college (along with Native Son and many Isaiah Berlin essays). Hadn't really thought about it all since then. So I checked out Émile Zola and came across The Fortune of the Rougons , thanks in large part to the Oxford press for undertaking new translations of most, if not all, of the cycle. And thus slowly began an obsession. I didn't really make it a goal until after the fourth one. I've tried to adhere to Zola's recommended order and the next one will be fifteenth in both number and recommended order. Of the fourteen I've read, I'd reread eight of them without hesitation, would have to talk myself into two of them—but it could be done, and I'm glad I read the other four, but I'd never read them again. This novel, with a translated title evoking Eric Idle singing at the end of The Life of Brian is anything but funny. It's either the best of the ones I never would read again or the worst of those I could be cajoled into doing so in a blue moon.

The translator, in his introductory essay, thought this novel to be Zola’s most personal of the twenty. But for me, by reading this, the reader sees Zola the technician at work, with few if any of the heart-rending, often frenetic, emotional climaxes or the descriptive crescendos that tends to be more memorable. He assembles characters who represent the ideas of misery and suffering, and I guess they do, but to me they were embodiments of varying degrees of maturity and immaturity, mostly found in the two main characters. Pauline Quenu, the newly-orphaned 10 year old daughter of the protagonists of The Belly of Paris is brought to the ironically named village of Bonneville on the coast of Normandy to be cared for by a family of distant relatives. They are also entrusted to protect her substantial inheritance. The idyllic opening doesn’t last long, however long it might take the reader to believe in the changes Zola lets play out.

Pauline is another of Zola’s saint-like, young female characters, also found in The Dream and The Sin of Abbé Mouret , who straddles lines between piety and carnality of various shades, with more emphasis on the former. Every week she has an audience with the “urchins” of the town and doles out advice, comfort, and small amounts of money. Unlike the false motives found in Christopher Hitchens’ characterization of Mother Theresa, Pauline’s focus was on the poor as such, as individuals, not as newly or likely-to-be converted. The most complex and destructive relationship is, of course, with her elder cousin of ten years, Lazare. As their relationship evolves from childhood friends toward potential marriage, she keeps her childish adoration for him despite his many failings and weak character even though his “dreams” robbed her financial security. Although “from morning till night he talked bitterly of money squandered, with the insufferable insistence of a practical man who had been right all along”, he rarely was. Characters cling to Pauline throughout because she seems to be the most secure and adult of them all. Knowledge that she had money—although only she and the family knew how much—surely helped. In reality, her innermost fears and misconceptions reveal her to be devout to certain ideas and outlooks are mixed with an odd immaturity.

Zola actually creates an affable priest as one of the minor characters. Abbé Horteur’s “indifference to other people’s salvation passed for tolerance” was about as charitable as Zola could get with the church, especially considering his views of the clergy in The Conquest of Plassans . Each character, like the confined patriarch of the family who constantly suffers in loud pain or a third love interest, Louise, whose vanity and materialism serve as a foil to Pauline, seem to play a point-of-view or attitude to make them less real. At times I had the same feelings as watching a Bergman movie with Liv Ullman. Kind of interested, kind of confused, but for some reason I continued on. And fittingly, it has a Bergman-like ending.

One of the more ironic book titles you will find. The only character that seems to have any joy is the cat Minouche - who doesn't even seem to mind when litter after litter of her kittens are drowned in the sea. It's interesting how Zola almost alternates his focus through the Rougon-Macquart... from tales depicting larger movements within society (Money, Pot Luck, The Fortune of the Rougons) to a laser focus on the miserable, everyday lives of a few (A Love Episode, Abbe Mouret's Transgression)...as in this novel.

Удивительно, что по-настоящему хорошие люди влюбляются в совершеннейших ничтожеств, мучимых депрессией и страхами и не способных удержать свой интерес на чем-то сколь-нибудь значительное время. Другие простым упорством достигают успеха в том же самом проекте. Ради счастья любимого своими собственными руками она похоронила свою любовь, сведя его с Луизой, а впоследствии самоотверженно помогая сохранить их брак. С точки зрения «разумного» человека она поступает опрометчиво, глупо и лишает себя будущего. Но только она действительно счастлива из всех персонажей романа.

The Bright Side of Life is quite different to the other seven Rougon-Macquart novels I've read so far. All of those were concerned with socioeconomic phenomena, historical events, or both and the majority were set in Paris. I read The Bright Side of Life while visiting Paris, and should perhaps have chosen a more appropriate Zola novel. No matter. This one is set in a fictional hamlet on the Normandy coast and focuses on the individual and philosophical level. It is largely concerned with the messy physical realities of birth, sexual maturity, illness, and death. The protagonist Pauline begins the book at the age of ten by moving away from Paris after the death of her parents, to live with her aunt and uncle in Bonneville. (A literal translation would be Goodtown.) They have a son, Lazare, who Pauline grows close to, as well as a housekeeper named Véronique, a dog named Mathieu, and a cat named Minouche. All have a powerful presence in the household and thus the narrative, which follows them over perhaps twenty years.

I was fascinated to learn from the translator's note that The Bright Side of Life had a very lukewarm reception in Britain, because the initial English translation prudishly removed everything that makes the book striking and vibrant. It depicts Pauline's horror at starting her period without knowing what it is, a slow death by congestive heart failure, the excruciating pain of chronic gout, and the debilitation of obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms. Towards the end, there is an extended scene of childbirth that is perhaps the most detailed, evocative, and gruesome depiction I've ever read. None of this is pleasant for the reader, but Zola is such an exceptional writer (and the new translation does him sufficient justice) that I could not put the book down.

For all that the experiences depicted are near-universal (birth, adolescence, pain, death), the narrative is not as simple as it might seem. I found The Bright Side of Life a dialectic sort of novel, that asks whether life is worth living despite the inevitability of suffering, what death can teach us about life, and how different personalities deal with life's challenges. Zola provides no straightforward answers, because these are questions that have been debated forever and will no doubt continue to be. He cleverly shows the perspectives that were conventional in the time and setting he depicts, while also calling them into question. Pauline and Lazare are placed in contrast, as are the pets and the people, and the impoverished villagers and the household. Pauline provides a strong focus for events; she is emotionally strong with a powerful sense of duty, without being any kind of martyr.

The 2018 Oxford World Classics edition of The Bright Side of Life has a notably informative and thought-provoking introduction, as always to be read after the novel itself. Among other interesting points, it mentions that this was an unusually personal novel for Zola; Lazare's symptoms of mental illness were apparently his own. Seemingly, writing it enabled him to process his grief at the death of his mother. I hadn't realised that this novel popularised the phrase 'joie de vivre', another thing to thank Zola for. The translated title was explicitly chosen to echo the similarly mordant irony in the song concluding The Life of Brian. I think it fits very well.

A pessimistic book but maybe not. From the first to the last page things go from bad to worse but its heroine is another of the women we meet in this circle, who without showing any heroic quality never give up and continue to fight, whatever if fate throws them in their path. So she too, having been orphaned from a young age, finds herself with a family that from the first moment exploits her kindness, making her the victim of their strange characters. She, however, is not disappointed and continues to offer her help unselfishly, extending her charity to the afflicted. Fate, combined with wrong choices, brings misery to the family at a time when nature is mercilessly hitting their small town and then sees people around it being overwhelmed by growing despair that leads them to immorality. The temptation to follow them is great and until the end we wonder if he will bow down and become like them.

A book where the weight of the inevitable and the shadow of death cover everything, bringing thoughts about the meaning of life, about whether all this effort is worth it. The author brings the feeling of this weight to the reader in a way of writing so powerful that it is impossible to leave him unmoved, with staggering descriptions of events and feelings, emphasizing the urgency of these questions. So we, like our heroine, are faced with this storm and are called to decide. A book that could only be the product of a literary genius.

Ένα απαισιόδοξο βιβλίο αλλά μπορεί και όχι. Από την πρώτη ως την τελευταία σελίδα τα πράγματα πάνε από το κακό στο χειρότερο αλλά η ηρωίδα του είναι άλλη μία από τις γυναίκες που συναντάμε σε αυτό τον κύκλο, οι οποίες χωρίς να δείχνει κάποια ηρωική ιδιότητα δεν παραδίδονται ποτέ και συνεχίζουν να αγωνίζονται, ότι και αν τους ρίχνει η μοίρα στο δρόμο τους.

Έτσι και αυτή, έχοντας μείνει ορφανή από μικρή ηλικία, βρίσκεται με μία οικογένεια που από την πρώτη στιγμή εκμεταλλεύεται την καλοσύνη της, κάνοντας την θύμα των αλλοπρόσαλλων χαρακτήρων τους. Εκείνη, όμως, δεν απογοητεύεται και συνεχίζει να προσφέρει τη βοήθεια της ανιδιοτελώς, επεκτείνοντας τη φιλανθρωπία της στους αναξιοπαθούντες, χωρίς ούτε από εκεί.

Η μοίρα, σε συνδυασμό με λάθος επιλογές, φέρνει δυστυχία στην οικογένεια την ώρα που η φύση χτυπάει ανελέητα την μικρή τους πόλη και τότε βλέπει γύρω της τους ανθρώπους να καταλαμβάνονται από μία όλο και περισσότερο αυξανόμενη απελπισία. Ο πειρασμός να τους ακολουθήσει είναι μεγάλος και μέχρι το τέλος αναρωτιόμαστε αν θα υποκύψει και θα γίνει σαν αυτούς.

Ένα βιβλίο όπου το βάρος του αναπόφευκτου και η σκιά του θανάτου καλύπτει τα πάντα, φέρνοντας σκέψεις για το νόημα της ζωής, για το αν αξίζει όλη αυτή η προσπάθεια. Ο συγγραφέας φέρνει την αίσθηση αυτού του βάρους στον αναγνώστη με έναν τρόπο γραφής τόσο δυνατό που είναι αδύνατον να τον αφήσει ασυγκίνητο, με συγκλονιστικές περιγραφές γεγονότων και συναισθημάτων, τονίζοντας τον επείγον χαρακτήρα αυτών των ερωτημάτων. Έτσι και εμείς, σαν την ηρωίδα μας, ερχόμαστε αντιμέτωποι με αυτήν την καταιγίδα και καλούμαστε να αποφασίσουμε. Ένα βιβλίο που θα μπορούσε μόνο να είναι προϊόν μιας λογοτεχνικής ιδιοφυΐας.

The town of Bonneville is little more than a few dozen shacks resting precariously close to a rising, angry sea, and Pauline's relatives are the only people of breeding in town - although their wealth has rapidly declined. The gout-ridden father, his nervous and immaculate wife, their spiteful servant and gloomy son, a devotee of Arthur Schopenhauer, find their world unsettled by the arrival of this optimistic but moody prepubescent girl with a handy fortune kept in an upstairs room. As the years go by, the Chanteau family must navigate a delicate balance between love and freedom, hope and despair, and kindness and deceit.

Zola's 12th novel in the Rougon-Macquart cycle, first published in 1883, has had a rough critical time in English. Translated with the usual lack of élan and the expected delight for censorship by prudish Victorians, the complexities of the narrative were lost without Zola's monstrous set pieces and his investigations of the earthier sides of human nature. In Andrew Rothwell's note-perfect 2018 translation, hope is regained. And what an intense, philosophical novel is revealed!

The Bright Side of Life (the title is somewhat ironic, but I think some readers overstate that fact) takes place entirely within the confines of Bonneville. Zola's novels are so often explorations of "spirit of place", and so it is here. Although we follow Pauline's life for a decade (or more?) the surrounding world of Bonneville feels smaller and smaller with time. The insularity stands in stark contrast to the perpetual motion machine that was The Ladies' Paradise 's department store, or the sordid parties attended by Nana . Instead, the author charts with pinprick-precision the emotional and philosophical development of Pauline and her cousin Lazare, watched over by the half-dozen other characters who inhabit their lives (not to mention the fantastic duo of Mathieu the dog and Minouche the cat, who exude as much complexity as any of Zola's creations!)

"I'm not worried about the unknown, it's bound to be something logical, so it's best to wait for it as calmly as possible."

Lazare's Schopenhauerian despair is pitted against Pauline's optimism - or at least idealistic pragmatism - but the novel never feels like a mere cage in which to act out philosophical experiments. Lazare is a portrait of the individual reduced to nihilism by a combination of society and circumstances (maybe my intermittent Millennial Climate Change Depression[TM] may be what draws me to him?). Doctors and thinkers of the time located the source of high rates of "neurosis" in the decadence of the Second Empire, and Lazare here is a generation at risk of being trampled under the wheel of what his forebears have done to the country around him - and its sense of intellectual self-worth. Pauline is an expansive portrayal of the growth of a mind from childhood to adulthood. She is one of the most fascinating characters Zola had yet written, certainly his most interesting female character yet, which is a feat all impressive when one considers she could easily have become a kind of modern Candide - or even the engaging but perpetually "good" Denise Baudu in The Ladies' Paradise. Quietly determined to educate herself in a world where girls are not required to have such knowledge, Pauline sets about remaking the house in her own image. Zola finds the small moments of honest in her determination, her discovery of sexuality, and her moods - a victim of her circumstances yet one who refuses to question them.

In his introduction, Rothwell quotes a letter from Zola in which the author says: "This is the novel I want to write...Not my usual symphony. A simple straightforward story...The style direct, correct, forceful, without romantic flourishes. The kind of classical language I dream of writing. In a word, honesty in everything, nothing dressed up." One gets the sense he achieved his goal.

By now in his 40s, Zola had complete command of the French reading public - although he was apparently plagued by doubts that he would die before completing his 20-volume masterpiece (mercifully for all concerned, he did not). And the novel's quiet elegance is on display throughout. Each character remains both humorous and truthfully-drawn, with the narrator's perspective shifting between them. The delicate ironies are still there - Madame Chanteau, in particular, makes a grand show of how she would never ever take any of Pauline's fortune without asking, but then must navigate to a place where she can justify the question, justify convincing Pauline to agree, and do all of this without ever truly believing she herself may be acting with ethical murkiness. The literary tours de force have rarely been stronger, notably in the 'childbirth' chapter, where the family pass a truly horrific night re-enacted in macabre, heart-pounding detail. This is the first novel in the series to be set neither in Paris (the centre of the Empire) or Plassans (a fictional Aix-en-Provence and the ancestral home of the distantly related characters who tie the series together). The removal to the Norman coast is at first discombobulating, but here Zola finds as much cause for his social soapbox as ever, in the lives of the groundlings, forgotten - never, indeed, heard of - by the city folk and out to destroy themselves as much as anyone else. Pauline's compassion for the impoverished children is tempered by a determined pragmatism; she knows that many of them will never amount to anything, and that they lie and cheat to gain more charity, but she also acknowledges that, in a choice between helping someone or not helping, one with the means to help only has one ethical option. Lazare and the Chanteau family, meanwhile, are more concerned with their individual needs, even perhaps a solipsistic view of the world. What Lazare gains that his parents do not is that sense, fearfully just out of sight but not quite out of mind, that all life is emptiness without perhaps engaging in some of this meaningful behaviour. Whether the startling ending supports Pauline's view or Lazare's is up to the reader, and I'm not sure I feel ready to make that choice.

And behind all of this, forever visible in the distance, lies the sea. In A Love Story, Zola interspersed his narrative with five impressionist views of Paris from above, each mirroring the changing emotions of that book's heroine. Here, he takes this conceit further, interweaving the sounds and smells and sights of the Channel (or, under the circumstances I suppose, la Manche) throughout the life of Pauline Quenu. She seems from first glance to be at one with the sea. She brings with her this natural force, and its salt and spray revive her. It is the site of love and discovery, and her reactions to the water - and, indeed, the reactions of others to her precious jewel - tell us much about them. But, like everything in this novel, there is murkiness. The sea is the great life-giver and a source of endless potential (Lazare's get-rich-quick scheme involves finding revolutionary uses for seaweed) but to the people of Bonneville, it is an assassin, creeping in by night and approaching their homes ever more closely, with malicious intent. The sea is that which takes away too, the harbinger of oblivion.

Somewhere between these two views lies La Joie de vivre.

Zola ne manque jamais de me surprendre, d'abord il utilise un titre débordant d'ironie, et puis il nous donne une fin qui me laisse bouche béante. Pourquoi? Bon, parce qu'il peut le faire tout simplement.

Pauline, la fille de Lisa et de Quenu, qu'on rencontre au troisième tome de la série : Le Ventre de Paris; elle donne l'impression qu'elle serait plutôt comme sa mère, mais ici, je dois avouer qu'elle est aussi différente que possible d'elle. Et je m'adresse à cette Pauline chérie, je n'ai cessé de la sermonner tout au long du livre: Et toi petite? Qui te soignera? Où est ta joie? Où est passée ta vie à toi? Si tu trouves ton bonheur à soigner les autres et à les rendre heureux, alors tu es libre à te gâcher la vie. On dit bien qui trop embrasse, mal étreint.

J'étais surprise par la quantité d'émotions présentes dans ce livre, plus que tous les autres tomes de la série. Il y avait des parties où les larmes me montaient aux yeux, tellement c'était chargé d'émotions. Il y avait surtout un contraste terrible entre la personnalité de Pauline et celle de Mme Chanteau et Lazare, Pauline tout simplement ne pouvait faire partie du ménage, elle était l'ultime manifestation de bonté et d'amour propre, et Lazare était un jeune homme lourd à porter comme a dit Dr. Cazenove, il s'ennuyait de tout nouveau projet qu'il venait avec, de toute sensation, et de l'existence elle même. Comment Pauline aurait elle pu vivre avec lui?

Ne kadar korkunç bir kitaptı böyle.
Normalde sevmediğim/sıkıldığım bir kitabı asla devam ettirmem. Ama bu kitabın nereye bağlanacağını merak ettiğim için okumayı sürdürdüm. Okurken beni deli ediyordu ama yine de bırakma huyuma direndim ve okudum. Hiçbir yere bağlanamadı maalesef ki. Sizi sinir edecek bir kitap arıyorsanız bu kitap bunu kesinlikle başarıyor. Hayatımda böyle salak bir baş karakter görmedim desem yeridir. İyi niyetli olmanın da bir sınırı vardır ama bu kız sınır mınır tanımıyor. Adının aksine yaşama sevincimi alıp süpürdü bu kitap.

Yazarın diğer kitabı olan Germinal'i çok sürükleyici bulup hayran kalarak okumuştum ama belli ki ikinci kitap olarak çok yanlış bir kitap seçmişim. Tavsiye etmiyorum.

This is the first English translation for many years. (Oxford University Press seem to be re-translating all twenty volumes of the Rougon Macquart sequence, which is long overdue for many of them.) There are a few memorable characters here ... Lazare, selfish, full of bad business ideas and a squanderer of money that is not his; his helicopter mother, Madame Chanteau; Pauline, a martyr to the family with a saintly level of patience, who represents Le Joie de vivre. Zola seems to have done his research when it comes to health - his description of a breach birth is relentless, as are his descriptions of Chanteau’s gout. Four stars!
