Rate this book
Only fifty years left before vampires rule the world.

When Dallas police detective Cami Davis joined the city's vampire unit, she planned to use the job as a stepping-stone to a better position in the department.

But she didn't know then what she knows now: there's a silent war raging between humans and vampires, and the vampires are winning.

So with the help of a disaffected vampire and an ex-cop addict, Cami is going undercover, determined to solve a series of recent murders, discover a way to overthrow the local Sanguinary government, and, in the process, help win the war for the human race.

But can she maintain her own humanity in the process? Or will Cami find herself, along with the rest of the world, pulled under a darkness she cannot oppose?

Sanguinary is the first book in a brand new series by Margo Bond Collins. Margo…you did it again. I absolutely L-O-V-E-D this book, every single page. There are no slow spots, just awesomeness from the first page until the last.

 photo margo_zpsaa51e588.jpg

Cami Davis lives in a world where vampires exist. These are not glittery friendly vegetarian vampires. These are the bad kind, the kind that like their blood fresh from the source. Cami is a police officer that works for the Dallas PD’s Sucker Squad. This is a special unit that hunts down and kills vampires. Dallas has had a string of murders, all women, all arranged carefully on a pentagram, and with strange blue light beams emitting from the wounds. The only way to infiltrate the inner vampire circles is to go under cover. Cami’s ex partner sets it all up and Cami goes in. What she hadn’t anticipated, though, was her contact being quite so sexy.

 photo gown2_zps7f224373.jpg

“I didn’t know if I could trust him, this cowboy-vampire I had been thrown together with. But something about him sang to me, like a tune just out of hearing, almost recognized-a song of protection and death. And I wanted to dance to it, almost as much as I wanted to escape it.”

 photo gown3_zps389ed78c.jpg

Reese is a Dallas native, a cowboy, and was turned into a vampire eight years ago. He knows about the murders and wants to help. It didn’t take long, though, after meeting Cami for him to realize there was something about her. The bond between them becomes something more than either of them might have anticipated or can even understand. Can Cami really trust Reese? My opinion changed a couple of times throughout the book. I’m still not completely sure. One thing I am sure about, though, is that Reese is one sexy vampire. And the connection between he and Cami is hot, hot, hot!

 photo gown_zps6a479b78.jpg

 photo gown1_zps6cb09826.jpg

Cami and Reese’s investigation take them from the seedy vampire club called the Blood House to what starts out as a Cinderella moment for Cami as they attend an exclusive Halloween Ball. But this book also contains plenty of wooden stakes, plenty of battles and plenty of gore.

 photo margo1_zpsbfc1e214.jpg

The ending, oh my gosh, yes, there is a cliff hanger. Margo, I hope you have the next book written because I need to know what happens next. So if you enjoy vampires, plenty of action, and one sexy cowboy vampire, you will love this book. I’ve said it before but it needs repeating, Margo Bond Collins, if you write it, I will read it. I have loved every single one of your books and can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

This was really good... Dark, suspenseful and unique... definitely haven't read anything like it before. Add to that a sexy cowboy vampire and well... you have a winner!
This is getting back to the type of vampires we used to know... the bad, blood thirsty kind that has you compelled to keep a stake or two hidden in your handbag... just in case...
This is a world where vampires are known to exist. Cami works for the sucker squad and investigates vampire crimes. There have been a string of mysterious murders in which the bodies have been found with strange carvings that have an eerie blue glow. On one corpse they find a word written in blood... Sanguinary. Cami agrees to go undercover as a claimed human in the hopes of finding out who is committing these murders and why.
Reese, our sexy cowboy, is a character that you want to trust but aren't really sure if you should. There is an immediate and strong connection between him and Cami that neither of them expected or can even explain.
By the time we reach the end of this book, there have been several blood baths, lots of blood and gore and a surprise ending that has me on the edge of my seat! It looks like the Sanguinary mystery really has just begun.
This is the first installment of this series and it does end on a cliffhanger but in a good place... I'm definitely curious to see what happens next.
Great book choice for vampire fans... especially if you're looking for something different. I really liked it...

Okay, this book is good...really really good. The author's world building is excellent, and spurns me to consider fan fiction, just cause I want to write a story in this vampire world - you have to read Bound by Blood, too to get a real feel for the world that the author is making. The mystery in the story is very well done. If you're looking for Dark Paranormal Fantasy, this one will be right up your alley (Content Warning: Because I read mostly clean fiction, I have to put an "R" rating on this one for Language, Graphic Violence, and Sexual Situations.)

This was another easy read from Margo. In this new series, Cami is a detective who goes undercover with a vampire, Reese, to solve a case of ritualistic murders. The pacing was very fast, and Cami and Reese were very likable. The romance (or, what little of it existed in this novel) wasn't overdone, either.

I'll definitely keep up with this series!

Favorite Lines “This shouldn't feel so much like coming home.”

“My fear provokes Reese's desire. Add that to my list of things that terrify me.”

“The last night I truly believed I was one of the good guys.”

"Blood is life."

This was a dark, bloody, fabulous book!
Cami works for the Sucker Squad (Paranormal Victims Unit) when they come across a vampire killing humans. She goes undercover as a vampires claimed human. She meets the hot as hell cowboy vampire Reese. He's after the murders known as Sanguinary. Cami does a lot of things during this undercover mission that make her question if she's one of the good guys anymore.
This as spectacular author! I look forward to what comes next! I recommend this to any vampire lovers!

Sanguinary really starts with a bang, and carries that crazy momentum through the rest of the book. This book has violence, excitement, suspense, betrayal, love, and all kinds of crazy things going on that truly made this a great book. I read it way too fast, in one day, because I couldn’t put it down! Those are my favorite types of books though I’m always sad when they end.

Sanguinary is a great start to Collins Night Shift series. I enjoyed this book immensely. It had just the right amount of each element listed above that it was a perfect balance of activity. I didn’t find myself wanting to skim sections or wishing the end would come already. I was excited to find out what would happen at the end, but I didn’t actually want it to be finished.

Margo Bond Collins has a great sense of humor, in my opinion, as well. There is always something in each of her books that totally cracks me up. In Sanguinary, it’s the scene with the bats. You’ll know it when you read it. I can’t say I’ve read anything that happens the same was as this scene, and it was very entertaining.

The characters in Sanguinary are well done and interesting. We are given enough info to form our own opinions of who they are, but she still leaves a little bit to the imagination for later. For example, the male lead, Reece is a super sexy alpha type of male vampire. He’s also Cami’s contact for her undercover job. As good as he seems some of the time, there are other times, based on his actions and clues from other characters, where I really wonder where his loyalties lie. We never get Reece’s full story, but we get enough to make our own decision as to whether he’s a hero or a villain. I seriously hope I chose correctly!

Cami is a cop who goes undercover to try to infiltrate the local vampire government and find out exactly what is going on with them. I liked her character for the most part. She seemed to have a genuine sense of right vs wrong. She is compassionate and tends to think of things from a logical point of view before jumping to conclusions.

Essentially Sanguinary is a very good book if you like vampire action books with light romantic elements. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is into that sort of thing.

In the world created by Margo Bond Collins, the vampires are no longer the mythical creatures of the night. Vampires are now the world's reality and, while harmony exists right now, that won't always be the case. Especially when drained dead girls with weird carvings and blue lights keep popping up all over Dallas.

To get to the bottom of the murders, Cami Davis, a member of the police force's Sucker Squad, agrees to go deep undercover into the world of vampires and their human bloodgivers. Her partner, Quentin Garrett, is a vampire junkie and just the person to introduce her to the vampire scene. He has a vampire contact that is willing to work with Cami to get her the information that she requires. Except, the contact - Reese - is nothing short of a god in a Stetson. Now not only does she have to worry about what's going on in the vampire underground but she has to hold on to her convictions about "no vampires" - even ones that are smokin' hot, protective, and causes Cami to feel things she hasn't felt in a long while.

Sanguinary is action packed and full of excitement. There isn't one moment that is dull or boring. I read it in one evening - or devoured, actually, because I just didn't want to put it down. The plot flows pretty well - there are some abrupt shifts in what's going on but it's easy to shift gears and go with it. Cami is a strong heroine - you have to be to put your life on the line and jump into the shark....errr...vampire tank. Reese is very likable, for an undead guy, that is. His devotion to Cami is quickly formed but undeniable. There are secrets surrounding Reese though that are alluded to but not explained....yet. There is a statement made at the end of the book by Leah Richards that is a prime example.

I'm excited to see where Margo Bond Collins goes in the next Night Shift novel.

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Cami Davis is detective for the Dallas police department; she works on their Sucker Squad. This just means that she is a vampire hunter. Someone is going around Dallas killing women and leaving them lying out on a pentagram. Cami gets a lead that it is probably a vampire that is killing all those women. Her partner Garrett is a vampire junkie which means he likes to be bitten by vampires. But he is supposed to be on the wagon at the moment. Garrett has set Cami up with a cowboy vampire, Reese, he is the only contact he has that knows about the Sanguinary; the vampire government.

Reese was a cop before he was turned eight years ago. So he still has a lot of his human traits. Reese wants to put a stop to all of the killing as well. Cami is going to become Reese's claimed. If a human has been claimed then another vampire cannot feed from them. Cami has to let Reese feed from her or the other vampires will not believe that she is his pet. Cami and Reese is in for a big surprise after his claiming ceremony at the Blood house. They never expected the connection that was between them afterwards. I don't think Cami was to upset about her connection with a hottie like Reese. Besides all that she gets to go to a Halloween ball and dress to the nines.

I love vampires I don't mind if they sparkle or not but they are a lot better if they are hotties like Reese though. I loved Sanguinary it was over flowing with action, vampires and a whole lot staking going on. Cami is one tough girl who knows how to use a stake on a vampire but of course she can kick butt without a stake just as well. She is one fast chic and with her and Reese working together they make one h3ll of team. I can't wait to read more about Cami and Reese and their partnership.

Sanguinary by Margo Bond Collins is a novel in her new Night Shift Series and I have to say that I really enjoyed reading it.

Cami Davis is a police detective who has joined the vampire unit. It seems a war might break out between vampires and humans, when several humans are turning up dead and a vampire might be the killer. The only way to find the truth about these murders is to go undercover and it is Cami who is thrown to the wolves. Now the only thing she needs is a vampire who can introduce her into the vampire society and have her back.

Reeves is a vampire and an ex-cop, he knows there is something strange going on in the vampire society and he is determined to find out what is going on. So he agrees to be Cami’s vampire contact and her way in with the vampires. But neither of them could have known the huge attraction between them and the rules to be accepted by the other vampires. The price might be too high for Cami.

It’s the first book I’ve read of Margo Bond Collins and when the opportunity was handed to me to read and review this book I couldn’t say no. I love reading novels where vampires are involved and mostly those vampires turn out to be good by the end of the book, but not in this novel. They are evil to the bone, but with one or two exceptions.

I love Reeves and Cami together; from the moment they meet I knew Reeves was different from the other vampires. For some reason he’s still got a heart and really want to help Cami in her journey to find the killer and bright him or her to justice. The ending of the book was a little surprise and I’m really dying to get my hands on the next book, because I really want to know what will happen next with Reeves and Cami.

Sanguinary is the first book in the Night Shift series. I’ll admit that I’m not much of a vampire fun. Okay, I’m not a vampire fan at all, but I love Collins’ writing and have found in the past that she has been able to crash through my reading prejudices. Well, Collins did that again with Sanguinary. I found the plot intriguing. I enjoy the idea that vampires have been ‘outed’, but no one knows from where they came.

I loved Cami. It’s always refreshing to have a kick-ass female lead. She also feels real because, in addition to kicking ass, she has feelings and emotions. The development of the romance between her and Reese felt very realistic. I wanted to kick his butt a few times myself, which only indicates just how realistic the romance was.

The story is full of action and intrigue, which made the novel easy and quick to read. I especially enjoyed the mystery element. Because it’s a supernatural mystery, the good guys and bad guys aren’t always easy to distinguish. I really enjoy that as with the normal mystery novel it is often all too easy to extract the clues and figure out the mystery before the book is even half over.

I can’t wait to read the next installment in the series.

This is quite a book! I love it. Action packed and full of adventure. It is a definite page turner. The story maybe about Cami and her solving the murders of some women in Dallas but, for me it was all about Reese! Dang, but that is one cowboy I would have no problem running into. Even if he is a vampire! I loved the plot and set up of this story. It was amazing. There is a big cliffy though, so you are now warned. The next book needs to be out, like today. I need it Margo Bond Collins. She has written a book that I was unable to put down and didn't want to put it down even after reading the last line. I wanted so much more. This is one heck of a read and one I think any vampire hunter lovers will love. Action, adventure, mystery, and one sexy man thrown in and you have a great book in your hands.

Sanguinary is not your normal vampire book. For starters, have you read about a sexy cowboy vampire?
This is a page turner for sure! The action does not stop from page one till the end. We first meet Cami, a police officer who is trying to solve murders in a world filled with the bad variety of vampires. She is sent undercover when several women are killed and she is set with a super fine vamp named Reese.
Together they can't describe why they feel so pulled to one another and Cami really struggles with maintaining herself in all of the events surrounding her.
You will want to read this book, especially if you like your vamps hardcore.
Not suggested for under 16.

This is an amazing, shocking, and absolutely not your typical vampire story. ..... The large cast of well developed characters really deliver the goods. ... Action packed from the very first page we are in a world where 10 years ago vampire only existed in books and movies......This is a whole new ballgame, where there are Blood Houses that some humans go to become live donors, or in some cases to be claimed buy one vampire exclusively. Some people become addicted to being fed off of, and Yep there are rehabs for that! This may not be ideal, but it keeps the vampire attacks low. It took some years for the world to believe, and then, there were some bloody years as they learned how to fight back. That brings us up to The Paranormal Victims Unit. These Detectives are trained to kill vampire. This is where we meet Cami Davis and her partner Quentin Garrett. Right now they are dealing with a rash of murders in the Dallas Texas area. In the last 4 weeks there have been 10, all centered in the downtown area. All with the same MO. fang marks not only on the neck, but all over with symbols also carved on the body. The strangest thing is a blue light is seen shooting out of the wound straight up into the night sky. Tangled in the hair of one victim was a small paper with a word written in blood on it. "Sanguinary". That word has been whispered as a threat, and shouted as a warning from a vamp taken down before. "The Sanguinary is coming." "The Sanguinary will kill you all."
And that's why Cami Davis is going under cover amoung the vampire. Her partner Garrett is taking her to the Blood House to meet a contact, Resse. He is a vampire that knows about this Sanguinary.... Garrett was a bite addict, but no one mentions his relapse. He is known at the Blood house and gets them in to meet Reese, and oh yeah, Reese? he is just beautiful! .. bright green eyes and dark hair. He has on cowboy boots and wears a cowboy hat. So.... Cami & Reese go into one of the curtained off alcove's there to talk, and she finds out that Garrett was only allowed back into the Blood House because he told the Administrator that he had someone who wanted to be claimed. Holy hell, now she has to let Reese feed off her just enough so the other vamps can "smell" that he fed. This will allow them to meet in publiic. So, o.k., she is now set up as his blood tramp. Reese tells her that Sanguinary is a contingent of vampire, small but powerful, and growing. They don't want to integrate with humans, that is to say, any integration should be in the form of changing humans into vampire or for food. Reese believes them to be behind the recent murders..........This whole story branches off in different directions, the who's the what's and even the why of it all keeps changing as we move deeper and learn more about the world we thought we knew. You just have to read for your self all that Cami, Garrett and Reese go through.....It's darn near impossable to try and tell you, except to say that I know I was absolutely knocked sideways.
I was gifted this book in return for my honest review.

Well this one good book. I am intrigued by the detective Cami, she goes undercover as well lets just say the vampire's food supply. Only she did not know that when she signed up for the job. Seems her Partner Garret is an addict and will do about anything to be bitten, it's a drug to humans and very addictive. I truly love this new take on vampires and that they have made themselves known to humans. Who of course are afraid of them, and most believe they should all be killed. The vampires are split some think they should have never let society know they existed. Some of the vampires are good and Hot. Cami thinks Reese is really good looking, too bad he is a vamp. Now I have said entirely to much, as to not spoil it I will leave it at this get the book it was great.

I hope you enjoy this book as Much as I did.

Vampires, magic, and alternate dimensions. This is a fun read that introduces us to vampires who have entered this realm through portals instead of using the usual historical origin stories, which is interesting. I hope a next installment will tell us a little more of this old new world.

I read this as part of an 11 book deal from Amazon and this vampire book was a little different than the others in it and had a little bit of a Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) feel to it. Cami appears to be a "normal" human, but when working with a vampire to take down other vampires something strange happens which seems to make her more desirable, kind of like Sookie other than the fact that we know why Sookie is desirable to her vampires.

As with most vampire stories, chaos ensues and things so sideways. We are left on a bit of a cliffhanger, but it doesn't look like the next book covers her story (there's only 2 out), so I'm not sure if there are more to come in this series or if that's it.

Wow!

It seems that I cannot get enough of this writer. Usually when you cross series of an author, you find similarities in the storyline and evolvement of characters. But I find this not to be the case. Another Texas story...vampires and those who police the powerful...undercover ops...love, could it be?

I enjoyed this so much more than I was anticipating! I mean, it's Margo Bond Collins, so you know it's going to be written well, but a small part of me always expects Twilight when I open up a vampire novel. I couldn't have been more wrong! First of all, it is SO NOT a teen novel! This contains language, sex, violence, blood and gore... pretty much exactly what I'm looking for from a horror novel. I wouldn't necessarily classify it as horror, though. It had it's tense moments, but it wasn't giving me nightmares either. It was almost like a season of True Blood, but in Texas... with a cop and a cowboy.

And can I take this opportunity to suggest that Canada needs more cowboys?

When there's sex, there's romance... but not always.  Sanguinary wasn't heavy with the romance, and with its characters came a lot of mistrust. It added a really interesting component to the sexual tension. How much of it is real, how much is strategy, and how much is just a blood connection? I love not knowing who to trust! There was also a science fiction aspect. Overall, it was a really creative melding of genres, and I am so excited for more! There's a novella, Bound by Blood, to keep me satisfied for a little longer, but book two needs to happen. Now, please.

Mixed

The beginning of this story we see a hardness in Cami because of the cases she has seen. We see her trying to help mankind without knowing how deep the danger goes. When she see the murders taking place the only way she can solve it is with the help of vampire Reese. Reese is an unknown character and even through the story we don't really get to know him. The author gives us some background but with Cami's doubts we don't fully trust him. I think that's the start of my mixed feelings on this story. I so wanted to believe in Reese even when we saw him doing good I never really got over that bump. The romance came and gone with the claiming and that left a hole to especially with me being a fan of Reese. The epilogue left so many things hanging that it didn't endear the story to me at all. Sorry for me though 3 is all I can muster to give.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I was very impressed. The characters were so real in this book that I truly felt as if I was right there with them.

Cami and Reese make a great team. I loved following their story as they got to know each other better and the circumstances they got into. This book has tons of action and I was sucked in right at the beginning. This book held my attention all the way through and I could not believe the ending. The author totally left us hanging ready for the next book.

I love cliffhanger books like this. The action in this book was intense; the connection between Reese and Cami was super hot, and once they got together…watch out. I can’t wait to read the next book to find out what happens to them now.

I highly recommend this book to vampire lovers everywhere. It’s great and I should mention there are a lot of funny parts as well. Cami is a real butt-kicker of a character and that is awesome!

This book gets 5***** from this reviewer all the way around.

Pretty exciting vampire story

Was much better than I expected after reading some of the other reviews. I can see how not everyone would like this book thou ghost. You don't really get too deep into how Cami is as a person, just that she hates vampires.and had been bitten by one. We never really find out exactly what happened there, and we really don't find out anything about the good vampire and what little we do I won't say so I don't ruin it for anyone, but still it all worked for me. It was a really fast read and a fast moving book. I thought it as written pretty well actually. I did find one typo but it was just a missing letter so much better than a lot of the books out in kindle nowadays. I probably will read book two if there is one because I want to know more about where they went! So all in all an exciting fast read if you don't want to get into a really involved book and want action and a bit of mystery too. Worth reading if you like voice stories.

I love reading books that take place in cities close to where I live. I feel like I can connect with the story better.

Sanguinary is a very different approach to vampires. It’s one I haven’t really seen before, but I liked it. You have an idea of who is behind the murders, but you don’t get a full grasp of how big the situation is until it’s right there in front of you.

I really like Cami has a character. She’s tough, and does whatever she needs to in order to get the job done. She also proceeds because of gut instincts and I think that’s what allows her to be a better cop in this book.

The ending can be considered a “sort of” cliffhanger. It doesn’t mention there are more, but maybe there is a possibility.

There is definitely some gore, so if you aren’t a fan of that, some areas may be a little difficult to read.

Disappointing.

I read Legally Undead: Vampirarchy, Book 1 yesterday and loved it, so I quickly purchased another book by the same author. Unfortunately, Sanguinary was disjointed, overly simple, with one-dimensional characters. Worst is the main character, one of those silly women who tosses aside at various times a) her good friend/partner/former mentor; b) her career; and c) her principles, all for -you guessed it- an attractive man that she knows nothing about. Readers deserve better than this.

Yup, vampire book. I gave it a four star rating because it's actually a pretty good book. However, I won't read anymore in the series. Why? I don't like vampire stories. Honestly, I don't mind vampires in the stories but I don't like stories about vampires. I don't have an aversion to any other supernatural creatures, just vampires. This is a horrible review. I'll give myself one star and cease writing

Not at all what I expected (in a good way). Fast-paced, full of twists and turns, and you still feel like you don't know just who the good and bad guys are. Looking forward to the next in the series!
