The "Scriptores Historiae Augustae, " or "Historia Augusta, " is a collection of biographies of Roman emperors, heirs, and claimants from Hadrian to Numerianus (117- 284 CE). The work, which is modeled on Suetonius, purports to be written by six different authors and quotes documents and public records extensively. Since we possess no continuous account of the emperors of the second and third centuries, the "Historia Augusta" has naturally attracted keen attention. In the last century it has also generated the gravest suspicions. Present opinion holds that the whole is the work of a single author (who lived in the time of Theodosius) and contains much that is plagiarism and even downright forgery.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of the "Historia Augusta" is in three volumes.

Her zamanki gibi bitirdikten sonra benden önce okuyanlar neler düşünmüş diyerek incelemelere göz attım. O yüzden kendi incelemem eser içeriğinden ziyade "Bir düzenbazın elinden çıkan uydurma bir metin mi?" bölümünden kısa bir alıntı çevresinde şekillenecek:

Tarih boyunca yazılan birçok kaynak, belli amaçlar doğrultusunda yazılmış olması, yazarın bilerek veya bilmeyerek yanlış bilgi vermesi, taraf tutması ve bir tarafı yüceltmek, diğer tarafı da kötülemek istemesi, önyargı, bilgisizlik ve doğruluğunu teyit etmeden bazı bilgilere yer vermesi, propaganda, metinlerin bozulması, dini ve sosyal durumlar gibi birçok sebepten tahrif olmuştur veya doğrudan güvenilmez kaynaklar olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Öteden beri Roma tarih yazıcılığında Romalı yazarların kendilerini, soylarını ve devletlerini yüceltmek ve karşı tarafı çoğunlukla kötü veya düşük görmek gibi bir adetleri vardı.

Bir eserde ne bulacağınız ondan ne beklediğinizle alakalıdır. Eğer giriş, çevirmen notu gibi kısımları atlarsanız, özellikle eserin anlatıldığı döneme dair bilginiz yoksa çoğu zaman sıkıntı yaşarsınız. Bu bağlamda bu eser de giriş ve çevirmen dipnotları son derece aydınlatıcı. Dönem yaşayışına dair değerli verileri içinde barındırmakta.

Bu yüzden bahsettiğim kısımları dikkate alıp dip notlara itina ederseniz, dönem hakkında biraz da bilginiz var ise keyifle okursunuz.

Of questionable accuracy, often self-contradictory and sometimes outright fraudulent, this history of later Roman emperors is still useful and entertaining. Covers the Emperors from Hadrian to Septimius Severus, purported to be written during the reigns of Diocletian and Constantinian by several different writers but probably by just one man. Familiar Suetonius and Cassius Dio type biographies of the Emperors, giving an overview of their reign, wars fought, senators executed, buildings dedicated. Gives an idea of the character of each man, or at least the character that the author thought would be most pleasing to his audience. Each is described physically, so we know that one of them had "good digestion".

This history differs a bit from others in that it also includes the early lives of the Emperors before they assumed power. Their childhood, their lineage, where they grew up and who their teachers were. What kind of children they were and how their actions presaged their later power. Also mentions the many omens they encountered forecasting their future.

Also included are the biographies of heir apparents who did not live to become Emperor, and men who attempted to seize power and failed.

The editor makes clear form the beginning that this is a work of questionable historical value as some of it is pure fiction, but it is more along the line of embellished history to make it more entertaining than egregious lies and follows the true history for the most part. If it were a history of Ancient Greece and not Rome critics would overlook the errors and such and just take it as an informative snapshot of the time covered.

Kitapta Hadrianus, Pius, Marcus Aurelius ve hatta Verus hakkındaki kısımlar kabul edilebilir bir dille yazılmış. Oldukça keyifle okudum. Ancak sonrasında, özellikle Verus’un bir kısmında başlayıp Commodus’ta zirveye çıkan abartı ve uçuk bölümler gerçekten sıkıcıydı. Kitabın büyük çoğunluğunun yalan ve sahte olduğuna dair kısmı ise kitabı satın almadan okumamıştım. Bu biraz can sıktı. Ancak Roma dönemiyle ilgili bir miktar ipucu vermesi açısından son derece yararlı oldu. Genel olarak okunmasını tavsiye ederim ama bu kitabı akademik bir bakış açısıyla okumaya gerek yok. Magazinel bir kitap. İçeriği şüpheli. Alabildiğinizi alın, aklınızda soru işareti yaratan yerleri ise okumadan geçin.

Eser roma impratorlarının özel yaşamlarını ve kişiliklerini anlatması açısından çok güzel ve özel bir kitap. Gelgelelim yayıncı ve çevirmen bu zevki almamanız için elinden geleni yapmış. Eserin başında bu kitabın uydurma olabileceğini sayfalarca anlatmak çok değişik bir yaklaşım. Çevirmenin roma ve latin tarihine hakim olmamasıda çevirinin kalitesini düşürüyor. Bu önsözde bahsedilen yanlışlıkların çoğu gün ve aylarla ilgili olmasıda ilginç. Bunun dışında roma tarihine ilgi duyan herkesin okuyunca beğeneceği bir eser .

Roma İmparatorları 1.Cilt'i okudum. Kitapta daha çok imparatorların kişiliğinden bahsedilmiş ve bolca magazinsel konulara yer verilmiş. Rahat okunan ve fazlasıyla doyurucu bir kitaptı ama kitap objektif bir şekilde kaleme alınmadığı için kitaptaki her şeye inanmamak lazım.

Tarih ve Arkeoloji ile ilgilenenlerin,özellikle de Roma ,mutlaka okuması gereken bir eser.Bilgiler ve tarihlemelerdeki ufak hatalar insanın biraz kafasını karıştırsa da bu kitabın önemini değiştirmiyor.
