Do you believe in the saying, “The best person to guide you is the one a few steps ahead of you”?
While doing my engineering schooling, I realized that if, just before an exam, you require minimal, to-the-point, useful, and applicable information to pass the examination, your friend/colleague who has gone through the subject and appeared for the exam just last week is the best go-to person.
So are you a beginner in pyrography or wood burning and looking for a friend and colleague for informal guidance? Your search for that colleague ends here. I sincerely want to take you through that first step and prepare you for your first pyrography project!
This book provides a minimalist approach to the information required to start your first pyrography project. It

Just last week, I read another book by this author on one of his other unusual hobbies, leatherworking. I found that book to be very well done, as is this one. As the author states in the introduction, he is no extraordinary master craftsman with years of practice. Instead, he is just a few years down the path from the rank beginner. If you are interested in any topic, you may do well from learning from someone who is just a little ahead of you. That novice teacher would most likely remember what it is to be a true beginner and thus write a book for that audience which would be understandable and relatable. This book is just that. For those who don't know, pyrography—as literally translated—means *writing with fire*. Isn't that an evocative image? It is typically done on wood, though it can also be done on leather for a different kind of art and watercolor paper for practice. This book has a logical organizational sequence, giving a little of the background of pyrography and its tools before diving deeper into the techniques of the process. The book is full of pictures, which are so necessary for books like this. He shows both practice pieces as well as full-blown pyrographic art. It is amazing how detailed and nuanced some of these pieces are, given the tools and the medium. The end section has a set of projects that look relatively simple, beautiful, and sometimes even useful. As someone who loves to play games, I particularly liked the wooden dominoes and tic-tac-toe board. The book is somewhat repetitious in places, but that doesn't really detract from it overall. If you have any interest whatsoever in trying pyrography, I recommend picking up this book as your perfect companion along the way.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
