In theory you could work through these twelve lessons in a year, but for me it took half a year just to read it through and I'm sure it covers enough material to work with for several years. It's easy to see why it's a classic.

The twelth lesson that has been included afterwards covers the area I'm personally most familiar with, namely chaos magick, and I find it the weakest one, but it does make sense to at least introduce a paradigm that has grown so much in popularity after the first edition. I would feel nitpicking if I reduced a star for adding even more material to what is already an honorable epoch.

What I love the most is the humble, at times even friendlishly chatty attitude certainly not found in all (maybe even most) magick books out there. The author stresses many times not to take anybody's word for it, not even his, but to read widely and experiment. It seems as if he actually wants the reader to learn!

This a magick book where one may find their initiation into hermetic teachings. I have also read about occult philosophy from the "teaching of ages" from Manly, "outline of occult science" from Steiner, "the eternal fruit of knowledge" from Poole. Modern magick is a great text since Kraig is always really personal and sometimes feel like he is talking to you and eagerly sharing his magick experience with you. For example, he described his supernatural experience when he can sometimes see "nasties" or some of his students heard a voice calling out names soon after initiation. He also described that grey magick can potentially turn black magick and how to void this using tarot divination. Never practice black magick, my friends. It will only come back to you at least three fold, not to mention the karma. It isn't worth it, so you don't even need to ponder on if it's ethicalness. However, since the "correct" version of tarot has not been revealed by the Hermetic order, wouldn't that make prediction risky? Not to mention the risk of direct evocation of spirits. Don't dabble in magick unless you know what you're doing because it can be dangerous. I highly recommend this text for any beginner who wants to understand practical magick, a great down-to-earth guide.
