Elise Butler is a wildlife biologist who enjoys her stable (if somewhat predictable) job in finance at the World Wildlife Trust. However, when the veterinarian at Riverbend Animal Conservation Center goes missing, Elise offers to help the unlucky wildlife Conservation Center get back on its feet. Not only will the job in Riverbend, Indiana let her get back to her roots of working with animals, but it’s also a short drive from her sister’s workplace at Riverbend K-9 Academy, a training center for some of the FBI’s best explosive detection dogs.
FBI Special Agent Finn Cooper and his canine partner, Sedona, are chasing a well-funded animal trafficking ring. After an injury sidelines Finn from official FBI undercover work, he goes to work at Riverbend K-9 Academy to stay busy while he recovers…and to investigate his only remaining lead in the animal trafficking case.
Just as Elise begins to settle into life in Riverbend, her sister asks her to help the K-9 Academy by fostering one of their puppies. Finn is eager to keep Elise focused on training Zeke, the enthusiastic German shepherd puppy earmarked to become Riverbend’s first wildlife detection K-9, and keep her well away from his quiet animal trafficking investigation. Zeke quickly proves himself an expert both at chewing shoes and sniffing out clouded leopards. When Zeke starts finding scents where they don’t belong, Elise and Finn begin to realize that the Conservation Center may be more criminal than unlucky. And if Elise doesn’t keep her nose out of it, she might be the next target.
An Ear for Trouble is Book 2 in the Riverbend K-9 Series. All books in the Riverbend K-9 Series may be enjoyed as standalone novels or as a series.
K.T. Lee is a writer, mom and engineer who grew up on a steady diet of books from a wide variety of genres. When K.T. began to write the kind of books she wanted to read, she mixed clever women and the sciences with elements from thrillers (and a dash of romance) to create The Calculated Series.
This is my first book by K T Lee and I hadn’t read the previous book in this series but I will be going back and picking it up now, this is the second book in the series, but I can call confirm you can read as a stand-alone as I hadn’t read the first but I wasn’t lost at all. This is an independent story of the previous book.
An Ear For Trouble is a fantastic read, so well written, it’s got a lovely gentle pace to it, but it doesn’t grip you any less than a fast paced book, the authors writing style is as easy going as her pace and it sinks it claws into you were you find you won’t want to put the book down even to go get a brew !
Her characters are well written fully developed and three dimensional, you really love them as much as I imagine the author did creating them, I really found myself attached to Elise more than I expected. Obviously from the synopsis you’re aware this story centres around dogs, I loved this, they are central to the story as it should be, but I’m a huge animal lover with 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 budgies etc…. So I think I may be biased but I loved that about the story.
I loved all the twists and turns in this story, it’s always a bit disappointing if I can predict the plot all the way through and this I definitely didn’t. If you want a read that will have you begging for more, with suspense, mystery and dogs, oh and some romance obviously too, can’t forget that, then this is the book for you, it definitely was for me
Thanks to K T Lee and Rachel’s Random Resources for a free copy in return for an honest and voluntary review, all opinions are my own and freely given.
This was kind of a light mystery. It revolves around missing or dead zoo animals. It has a few twists and some light romance. I thought the dog training was interesting and would have liked more of that. It’s a good story. Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for the gifted copy
This is the 2nd book in the Riverbend K-9s series. I read the first and enjoyed that so wanted to give this a go.
It is another easy to read cozy mystery. You don’t get many mysteries (cozy or otherwise) involving an accountant with a double major in zoology(?) so that made it stand out some.
It was interesting to learn about wildlife conservation but again, the FBI let any civilian get involed in a case. They even let the coffee shop owner listen in to their meeting incase she needs to ‘spread gossip’. Even with this, it was an easy read and I liked reading about Elise and Finns relationship developing and how the story resolved.
I will look out for book 3!
Thank you to @ktleeauthor and @lovebookstours for a gifted copy for review.
I’ve always been drawn to animal stories, especially when incorporated into an intriguing crime mystery. “An Ear for Trouble” features wildlife detection K-9’s, and very much like a ‘Lassie’ tale, the loveable dogs are the main heroes of the story. As a lover of all things animal, I enjoyed reading about the wildlife centre, the varied animals cared for there, in particular the clouded leopard and how the zoo manages its animal trade, which I knew very little about.
Facts aside, the author drew me in instantly, with an opening chapter that captured my attention and intrigue. All of the characters played their parts well and I loved how Finn and Elise started a working friendship that smouldered from the minute they met, adding a ‘will they, won’t they?’ to the storyline.
What was also brilliant was how the author involved the dogs into the narrative. Their canine conversations through eye, ear and tail movements made them almost human and had me nodding my head at many of the familiarities of how pets convey their feelings and emotions.
The storyline itself was nice and simple to follow and predominately featured the town and its inhabitants as a backdrop to the dubious goings-on at the centre. I haven’t read anything by K.T.Lee before and I will certainly look out for more by her in the future. The previous book in the K-9 series - ‘A Nose for Mischief’ features Elise’s sister, materials engineer Zoey and her K-9 Tasha, together with her boss FBI Special Agent Alexis Thompson, who all take more of a backseat role in this book. Meeting all the characters and adorable dogs, I will be back for more and intend catching up on the first book soon too.
A fun and entertaining read but still tackling a serious issue of illegal animal trafficking, I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t enjoy this book if they like animals together with a crime mystery.
A solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for #AnEarForTrouble
My thanks go to Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on this tour and to the author for my copy of the book in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.

About the author - K.T. Lee is a writer, mom, and engineer who grew up on a steady diet of books from a wide variety of genres. She’s the author of multiple books, including those in the Riverbend K-9 Series and The Calculated Series.
It's only fairly recently that I discovered K. T. Lee and how great her stories are. I had the good fortune to be invited to take part in the blog tour for 'A Nose For Mischief' which is the first book in the 'Riverbend K-9s' series. When I heard that K. T. Lee was due to release another book in the series, I knew that I had to grab a copy of it at the earliest opportunity. Well ladies and gents the wait is over because the second book in the 'Riverbends K-9s' series is called 'An Ear For Trouble' and it was released on 11th October 2022. It's another cracking read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'An Ear For Trouble' but more about that in a bit.
I have to be honest and say that it took me a little while to get into 'An Ear For Trouble'. I was tired when I started to read and the science bits just went over my head. However, once I got into the story that was it and I was away as it were. I was intrigued by the characters and the disappearance of a vet. I developed my own theories as to what was going to happen so I had to keep reading to see if I had cracked the case before the detectives did - I didn't. This was certainly an enjoyable read with lots of lovely woofers and their handlers. I became so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the different characters that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the book. I soon got to the end of 'An Ear For Trouble'. I found 'An Ear For Trouble' to be a gripping cosy mystery, which certainly kept me guessing.
'An Ear For Trouble' is extremely well written. The author has pone of those easy going writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. For me, the story hits the ground running and maintains a gentle pace throughout. K. T Lee clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. She makes them seem just as real as you and I. I loved the fact that the detective in this story doesn't have one of the usual occupations, which makes the character stand out from the crowd. I loved the fact that dogs are a large part of this story but then I am a tad biased since I have two lovely but very loopy Labradors. There were certainly a few twists and turns to this story. I love the way in which the author makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action.
In short, I really enjoyed reading 'An Ear For Trouble' and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of K. T. Lee's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.
Always trust your dog! Elise Butler enjoys her job in finance at the World Wildlife Trust. But not only is she good with numbers, she also has a big heart for any kind of animal. So when her help is needed at Riverbend Animal Conservation Center, as the veterinarian has gone missing, she is happy to help the Center to get back on its feet, especially as now she can work more with the animals. And this is also the perfect opportunity to see more of her sister Zoey, who works at Riverbend K-9 Academy. Her sister, that asks her to foster one of the puppies, Zeke, where Elise does not hesitate one minute, especially when her new neighbour Finn Cooper is happy help training Zeke. Finn is a FBI Special Agent with canine partner Sedona, injured after chasing an animal trafficking ring, and now spending his recovery time at the K – 9 Academy. But when a cub clouded leopard dies unexpectedly, both Elise and Finn start to realize that both their investigations are linked somehow… While I have no pets myself, I consider myself an animal lover (and being on my own I don’t think it’s right to leave a pet all day alone in a small apartment – this just FYI…). So having a second part of a series where dogs truly steals the show, how could I resist? It’s also very obvious that Elise has an even bigger heart for animals. Even if she is working on the financial parts of Animal Centrums, she doesn’t hesitate to get her hands dirty (even literally speaking). And she doesn’t waste a breath for taking Zeke in… Elise is a character so easy to like and relate to. She is just a young woman trying to find her place in the world, even had her own share of bad luck that at some moments still haunt her. And the fact that she at moments still feels anxious after having a burglar at her home, made me relate with her even more, as I had the some ‘lucky event’ a year ago. Her gentle heart is also obvious, seeing her reaction when one of the cubs has passed away. her hurt is so obvious from just reading it… Then there is her stubbornness.. that for sure made me laugh! Her stubbornness is something she shares with her sister, so when we have two characters not giving in… well, I for sure was curious to see who would win! And that same stubbornness shows clearly with the interactions with Finn! But it was also sweet to see how at ease she feels with Finn and how alert she is whenever Finn thinks he is being subtle. Obviously this is Elise’s love interest. And while it was great to see their bond grow, that was not the focus of this story. The focus was on the animals, dogs and cubs clouded leopards. I already had a feeling that there would be so much more than the author shows us. And even if my suspicion were confirmed in every way, it left me with a bad taste in my mouth… Not because the story isn’t any good, but because unfortunately the fiction written here is also reality… How people try to gain an own profit on the back of animals that cannot defend themselves… Luckily for the animals in this story and for us readers, we have Zeke! Reading his fascination with shoes was hilarious, but I also felt proud of his own set of skills. Not only does he show how good animals are at sensing the emotions of their owners, but also how when trained well, they show how invaluable they are, as they ‘see’ what we ‘mere’ humans cannot see. The author has clearly done her research, it shows how she describes the works of both Elise and Finn. The mystery (while not so very mysterious to me) still was an intriguing one, as I was eager to read how deep things were entwined. And while Elise and Finn are the obvious main characters, determined to find out the truth themselves, the true hero in this book was Zeke, with his young eagerness and his expertise. Obvious proof that a dog’s instinct are always right! This was a great second book in a series, which can be read as a standalone. But having read the first book myself, I found it awesome to see how the previous main characters were doing and how they still had an important spot in this new story, without taking the spotlight away from Elise and Finn. A spotlight that was truly well – deserved as I was rooting for them, not only for solving the mystery but also for getting closer to each other!
I'm thrilled to review another of the Riverbend K-9 books. While each book can easily stand on its own, the characters and locations are set to intertwine and build a larger narrative if you read them in order. In An Ear for Trouble, we meet Elise Butler, the sister of Zoey Butler from A Nose for Mischief which I reviewed earlier this year. Like her sister, Elise is feisty and smart, having managed to marry her love of animals (Wildlife Biology degree) with a need for financial stability (Accounting degree) into a position with the World Wildlife Trust. I absolutely love Elise as a character, even though she has a deplorable habit of verbally tempting fate. We also meet Finn Cooper and his wildlife detection K-9 Sedona, who are in town ostensibly healing up from an injury and helping to train more dogs in their specialty.
I don't want to get too in-depth with the characters, and will say that if you read the first book there's a good bit of returning cast; as well as new folks from the Riverbend Conservation Center to get to know! The Conservation Center as the location of a cozy mystery is a new one to me, and I found myself enjoying this story immensely. K.T. Lee always puts a lot of time and research into her books, and it shows! The dog training protocols and zookeeper safety standards are beautifully described, and she doesn't shy away from mentioning the less than glamorous bits of serious animal care. As the main topic of the book deals with animal trafficking, there are discussions on the motives, as well as the ways zoos and conservation centers try to combat this type of crime. Much like the complexity necessary to keep breeding populations in zoos safe, the mystery of the missing veterinarian proves to be convoluted and yet shockingly simple.
Because this is a Riverbend book, there's a bit of romance to go with our mystery. Clean enough to be given to a younger teen, but showing clear, slow-growing attraction; the spark between Elise and Finn is sweet and undeniable. I love that the author acknowledges that relationships take time to grow, and that sometimes you need to take a chance to see where romance may lead. I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series!
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My Opinion
This is the second book in the Riverbend K-9s series. This was a quick read that definitely has a fun plot. Once again this had me hooked from the beginning but with dogs and a mystery there wasn't much doubt of that.
This would work well as a standalone but personally I would recommend reading the series in order to get the full enjoyment. How soon can I have my next visit to Riverbend?
An Ear For Trouble is an engaging cosy mystery involving a local conservation zoo and some strange shenanigans that causes a member of the WWF accountancy team to be called to help out after the unexpected disappearance and presumed death of not just their veterinarian but also one of their prized cubs.
What follows is an intriguing and well-developed story with all the hallmarks of a small-town mystery. The addition of the K-9s makes for often quite crowded scenes, and I was impressed that the author never once inadvertently forgot one of the animals:)
There's a great deal of detail in the story about conservation work, alongside the mystery of what's been happening. We're not spared the details of spreadsheets and doggy training, but the two main characters of Finn and Elise. alongside their friends and dogs, means that the story never gets bogged down. It moves at a lovely pace - always advancing the storyline. On more than one occasion, I did think I'd worked out 'who did it' only to be proved wrong.
An Ear for Trouble is a lovely, easy-going story without too much peril and perfect for fans of wildlife, dogs and small-town mysteries. An enjoyable and rather lovely read.
(I hadn't read book 1 in the series. This works really well as a standalone).
Elise Butler, an accountant and wildlife biologist, offers to help a wildlife Conservation Center in Riverbend near her sister. FBI Special Agent Finn Cooper and his canine partner, Sedona, were sent to the Riverbend K-9 Academy after Finn was injured so he could heal. While he continues quietly investigating his one lead in the animal trafficking case for the FBI, Elise arrives and is asked to foster a puppy that needs training for “wildlife detection”. She is given Zeke to train. Finn hopes that will keep her from getting close to his own investigation, which could be dangerous.
Zeke learns quickly to detect the animals, but begins to detect scents where they don’t belong. Is there something criminal going on in the Conservation Center? Does it have anything to do with Finn’s case? And can Finn keep her safe if she gets too close to his investigation?
I really loved this story line and the main characters, including the special dogs. The story was exciting and there was plenty to learn about wildlife. I am so glad to find this series and hope to continue it.
RIVERBEND K-9S: These books are standalones but the introduction of characters and spoilers makes reading them in order better but not necessary. Clean. No vulgar language or cursing. No sex. No graphic violence or injuries. Source for all books: BookSprout.
A Nose for Mischief, #1 - Pleasantly surprised how good this story is and the good characters, both two- and four-legged, are likeable and believable. Easy to read with interesting story lines and a touch of romance made a quick read. 4*
An Ear For Trouble, #2 - This is an interesting, easy to read story with a consistent pace, good characters, interesting story lines and plenty of animals. I like the author's writing style and the dialog of the characters and the humor spread throughout the pages. 4*
A Whisper of Suspicion, #3 - Interesting story especially with the major topic. It is good how each featured fostered puppy has different talents in each book. A good mix of intrigue, zoolife and romance at a good pace made this a quick and easy read. 4* RIVERBEND K-9S end.
This series is growing on me as it continues. Instead of focusing on just one or two main characters throughout the series, each successive book focuses on one of the secondary characters from the previous book, although those previous characters are still involved in the story.
We were introduced to Elise, the MC of this book, in the first book in the series, and I enjoyed getting to know her - and her work - better. The book opened with the disappearance of the Animal Conservation Center's veterinarian, who was presumed dead. As Elise and the rest try to find him, she discovers that there's a lot more going on at the Center than anyone knew. With the help of her sister and friends at the FBI's local canine training center, they follow the clues to a somewhat surprising conclusion. I suspected part of the solution, but not the whole thing.
The next book from this series is in my audio library, and I hope to listen to it relatively soon, as I want to get to know the next MC better.
So great to re-visit the Riverbend K-9 Academy For another romantic suspense and mystery With the FBI, dogs and Conservation Centre, too, I highly recommend this fab read to you!
This time the focus is on stopping an animal trafficking ring Trying the perpetrators involved to justice bring. However, Elise Butler is in town to help at the Centre Sorting support and finance - but who is out to prevent her?
With FBI special agents and K-9s, too, Endangered animals and warnings - from who? This is a fascinating page-turner I didn't want to put down Any interruptions were met with a frown!
With characters it is easy to relate to, An enthralling plot and brill animals, too, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Riverbend community once more And the next in this series am now looking for!
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you, It's an intriguing romantic suspense and this is my honest review.
I have become a huge fan of this Riverbend K-9s series. Love getting a glimpse at what goes into the specialized training of K-9 service dogs and this one has an interesting wildlife twist. Definitely a series meant for animal lovers - especially if you like heartwarming human/dog interactions that convey the special bonding between the pair.
The mystery is intriguing and involves Elise as a civilian amateur sleuth paired with an FBI agent working behind the scenes. Theirs is a bit of a grumpy/sunshine romance and it's a slow burn one -- not quite in the background but not quite centre stage either. There's lots of great cozy details about the town and its quirky characters as well as the K-9 Academy and we get to meet up with the hero and heroine from the first book as well. (No worries if you haven't read it though -- this one works fine as a standalone too.)
A lovely closed door romance paired with a cozy setting and compelling wildlife mystery.
Something sinister is happening in Riverbend leading to not only Finn but also Elise coming to town for different reasons and the fact they not only have mutual friends but also there is an instant attraction between them that neither act on to begin with. We get not only a great mystery that slowly unfolds with plenty of twists as well a red herring or two to make it harder to work out that bad guy but also a great slow burn and characters (human and animal) that make you laugh, want to move to Riverbend and fall a little in love with all of them. I look forward to the next in the series and I'm also going to read the first book which I hadn't yet read as I need to know how Liam and Zoey got together!.

The first thing to mention is that there’s isn’t a lot of cozy mystery hero’s who works in animal zoology. I was truly happy to have read this book, especially since I was able to read the first book of a new series which features a materials engineer. The second thing would be that Elise is a relatable, clever and overall lovely character. I was fascinated by her competence and her fortitude as she was expertly clever. Thirdly, would be writer’s background grows this book to an even more interesting level. I can appreciated the details and that make it sophisticated but not overly much so. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, I can’t wait to have it loaded in my kindle. I recommend this to everyone! Dog lovers, cozy readers, zoo lover reader, even budding romance readers???.

I couldn't resist this one as a dog lover and it turned out to be all I'd imagined and more. Elise is a wildlife biologist and when the vetenerian at Riverbend Animal Conservation Centre goes missing, Elise offers to help the Centre get back on it's feet. Elise's sister works nearby at the Riverbend K-9 Academy a training centre for some of the FBI's best explosive detection dog's. I loved getting to know Elise and the crew and seeing how there stories developed. Several times I had to remind myself to breathe as I was holding my breath alot while reading this suspenseful novel. There is lots of action, mystery, suspense and even romance. I adored Zeke and I think Sedona will be a great teacher to teach Zeke puppy manners. If you're after a thrilling action packed story this has it all and more.
An Ear for Trouble is the second book of the Riverbend K-95 series. This read was easy, delightful and cosy. K.T Lee delivers an intriguing plot woven with suspense, expertise, collaboration and romance. Her narrative style is distinct and lures you right from page one. Elise Butler wears her heart on her sleeve, and her dual skill as an accountant and a wildlife biologist makes her one of my favourite K.T Lee characters. Finn Cooper is a refreshing mix of purpose, intensity and aloofness. The presence of the K-9s was delightful and such a pleasure to read. Do not skip this one if you're a nature and animal lover. I highly recommend the series. A 5-star read!
Thank you to Booksprout and K.T Lee for giving me an ARC. This honest review is left voluntarily!
This is the second in the series and we focus on Zoey’s sister, Elise, this time. I have to say the book didn’t grab me as much as the first one did to start with but as it went on, I did get more into it.
There is a lot going on in this one, missing vets and endangered species dying in various zoos as well as a smuggling ring behind the scenes. I was really interested to learn about the way animals are traded rather than sold to zoos in USA, this isn’t something I would have known about if I hadn’t read this book.
We also have lots of dogs in these books too, Zeke is especially cute in this one, and Waffle also features from book 1. Even though this is a series, these can be read as standalones due to the focus being on different people each time. If you like dogs, animals and a bit of mystery and romance, these are most definitely for you.
Elise has come in from Denver to help the Riverbend Animal Conservation Center after what seems to be a series of bad luck incidents.
Not only is Elise an accountant, she is also a wildlife biologist. After agreeing to foster a German Shepherd, she works with Finn teaching the dog how to detect animal scents.
Can Elise teach the shepherd how to find scents? Will Finn and his dog resolve the animal trafficking?
This book gives you wonderful insight into the world of wildlife conservation.

2nd in Riverbend K9 Academy series, but can be read as standalone. Elise, accountant/wildlife biologist with the World Wildlife Trust, is helping the Riverbend Animal Conservation Center with their financial troubles. When the chief vet goes missing & endangered animals die unexpectedly, Elise travels to Indiana to look into it on site. FBI Agent Finn is also in Riverbend investigating wildlife traffickers with his K9 partner Sedona. When Elise fosters a puppy in training, their paths & investigations cross. This author is now on my auto buy list.

After reading the first book in this series, I was excited to read this one. I'm a nature lover as well as an animal person, so I loved the environmental theme of following Elise's story. Once again, the descriptions were amazing, and I could just visualize the story unfolding as I read.
This book can be read as a stand-alone, but is even better if you've read any of K.T. Lee's other books in this series and/or The Calculated series.

Endangered Species and Well-Trained K-9s This was a great book to read! It has all sorts of my interests just jumping out of the page. The main plot is wrapped around a zoo and the trafficking of endangered animals. There is some romance around the edges, too. The story is sweet and clean with no blood or gore. This book is tied to the prior book of the series, but they can be read independently from one another. I received the advanced copy for free from Booksprouts, but this review is all my own. I highly recommend this book, series, and author.
Excellent read for all lovers of a good mystery that showcases working dogs and their handlers.
This is a delightful read for any who love feisty heroines solving puzzles with the help of their canine companions. Story line kept me intrigued from the very beginning and I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading about working dogs and the people who partner with them. Add a touch of human romance and the story naturally flowed to its conclusion. Excellent read.

An Ear for Trouble is the second book of the Riverbend K-95 series and unfortunately, I did not read book on so I felt a little lost. However, this book was easy to read and follow. The plot was well written with enough suspense, romance and animal information to keep it interesting. Elise Butler is a fascinaating character with lots of offer in terms of knowledge of all things animal and economic. Finn Cooper is intense and aloof but a worthy character. Love the animals in this series as well.
An Ear for Trouble is the second book in Riverbend K-9s Series.
This book is a wonderful, fun, fast, page-turning read with a very well written and exciting plot, the characters are delightful. I love cozy mystery with animals and this book does not disappoint , it's full of mystery, actions, romance, and cute dogs. It keep me entertained from beginning to end, I really enjoy it and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

A well written and intense mystery in Riverbend is going to draw you into their small town surrounded by field after field .The array of familiar and new characters are vibrant, colorful, with some four legged furry companions and they're watching each other's backs ,because somethings happening and the K-9 unit is determined to find out what and who is responsible. This mystery had me entranced turning page after page until I reached its unexpected and climatic conclusion. Acquire " An Ear for Trouble " a Riverbend K-9 book 2 for hours of intriguing and enjoyable entertainment. Kat
I’ve read two from this series and one from the Calculated series. The stories and characters are interesting and enjoyable. The author, however, needs better editing (e.g., “I” used instead of “me”) and to use more varied writing - all the characters “snorted” instead of laughed, chuckled, giggled, smirked, etc. as well as all of them have the same habit of “running their hand down their face”. Having the two main characters always falling in love might get old. At this point, I’ll try the next book in the series to see if the story holds up.
