Renzo Del Castillo's poetry collection, Still, is a captivating read that has undertones of the Beats & Pablo Neruda all throughout. His style is concise & impactful, as he explores love, immigration, & more through stories & vivid imagery. "Butterfly Effect," "Royal Palms," & "Inverted Seasons" display just how strong Renzo's writing voice is, & are among my favorites. Still is a well built, down to earth collection & I enjoyed every moment reading it!
Renzo Del Castillo’s Still is a beautiful, lyrical collection of poetry that pays homage to the motherland and the trials and tribulations that come with life experiences such as immigrating to a new country, finding and losing love, and experience travel and what the world has to offer. Renzo Del Castillo’s, Still, is a brilliant work of poetry. His words create stories and make my body feel like it is having a deep inner experience, while also leaving an out of body perspective as well. This poetry is raw, real, and full of love. My favorite poems are Butterfly Effect and To-Do List. This poetry collection shows me a new point of view from Renzo’s eyes on life, while also providing a cathartic feeling as I read.
My thanks to both Goodreads and the publisher Indie Earth Publishing for an advance copy of this collection of poetry
I have only had to move a few times in my life. Five maybe six times. These moves were not much, pretty much staying in the Tri-State area, an area that I am acclimated to and understand the people and their ways. My move didn't entail leaving my country and coming to the United States, a country that has become less welcoming over the years, even for the people who have grown up here. My moves did not entail learning a new way of dealing with people, dealing with my family in a different climate and ways of thinking. Understanding the new laws of love, new rules of behavior, the unspoken rites of being a citizen who is not white, and how they must get by. Still: A Collection of Poetry by the poet Renzo Del Castillo reflects on all this in a collection about leaving what was known for the unknown, and the indifferent, growing up and older, love, family and eternity.
The poems range in style from a few lines, to longer works, even some narrative poems, which I have always been a fan of. Some poems even appear in different languages, which I liked as I was able to compare the word and usage. Most of these have appeared before, with what might be new works mixed in. The poet has a very nice style and gift for using words as both weapons and ways of describing the world. The language and the style fit the tone of the poem. Sometimes distant, sometimes emotive. All hit the soul just right. Two works really interested me, though I have many others that I enjoyed. Eros, was a poem that I read didn't think too much, but after a few pages I flipped back and read again. And again. Sometimes about the words and the scene they set in my head really stayed with me. Also the narrative poem Eulogy, which even though the subject matter was something most poets contemplate, also stayed with me, and lead to quite a few thoughts and contemplative sips of coffee.
A very fine collection, one that ranges over a lot of different subject matters, leaving the reader with much to think about at the end. I look forward to more by Renzo Del Castillo.
From the moment I laid eyes on the cover of "Still," I was transported back to cherished memories of family photo sessions at JCPenney, a simple yet poignant reminder of the power held within these pages. This book is far more than a collection of poems; it's a journey through the vivid landscapes of Miami, a dive into the depths of first love, and a tender exploration of familial and Latino roots.
As someone who doesn't regularly engage with poetry, I found myself captivated by each piece, which stands as a unique work of art. The author has skillfully woven words that not only resonate on a personal level but also invite readers to reflect on their own experiences. Each poem is a portal to a time or place, reminding us of the essence of life - to create, to love, and to truly live beyond the confines of our daily routines.
What's particularly striking is the inclusion of poems in various languages, adding a rich layer of cultural depth and authenticity. For intellectuals or connoisseurs of poetic mechanics, "Still" is a masterpiece. Each poem is meticulously crafted, showcasing a profound understanding and execution of poetic form.
This book is an invitation to pause, to connect with our memories, and to be still. It's a reminder that self-care can be as simple as immersing oneself in the transformative power of poetry. With interpretations open to the reader, "Still" stands as an unparalleled tool for personal reflection and growth.
In a world where we often forget to slow down, "Still" offers a much-needed respite, a chance to be transported through time and space. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to rediscover the beauty of poems and the magic of moments captured in words. Prepare to be transported and transformed.

The collection's narrative style is both accessible and layered, presenting a blend of simplicity and complexity. Readers are encouraged to delve beyond the words, imagining the emotions and stories that pulse beneath the surface. The poet skillfully transforms romantic notions into reflections tinged with melancholy and sadness into expressions of liberation and affection, resembling a personal confessional.

It’s a great collection of poems filled with a plethora of emotions. The collection takes us through the poet’s life and journey. Each entry tells a story and gives us a glimpse of the poet’s state of emotion at some point in his life. Coming from an immigrant family, I see my family’s life through his words. I admire the poet’s courage to share his innermost thoughts, which makes it feel more like a conversation with each written word. The one titled Tax Return is entertaining and thought provoking which I interpreted in my head as a poem to a lover or someone the poet was courting, or maybe towards the US government and Tax return is an actual poem about tax returns, which would be so funny, creative but funny.
Still is a poetic journey that narrates immigrant experience intermingled with threads stories of political upheaval, personal growth, and the quest for belonging. Describing the rich story of his family moving from Peru to America, Renzo Del Castillo's collection of poems resonates with the raw emotions and reflections of a young boy maturing into a man amidst the complex issues of displacement and adaptation. The poems paint a clear picture that becomes a window to the author’s personal experience that immediately captivated readers. As a reader, I found myself deeply moved by the emotional depth and poetic craftsmanship of this book. It is very easy to empathise with the author’s feelings, especially when we feel identified by them. I highly recommend it.

The poems masterfully intertwine personal and political narratives, touching on the complexities of identity. The author's linguistic prowess is evident in meticulously crafted verses, offering a profound understanding of poetic form. The inclusion of multiple languages enhances the collection's cultural depth, making it a masterpiece for poetry enthusiasts. Beyond a mere collection serves as a transformative journey through Miami's landscapes, first love, and familial roots. For those unaccustomed to poetry, it becomes an accessible yet profound introduction, encouraging reflection and a rediscovery of life's beauty. Highly recommended for its universal appeal and the respite it provides in our fast-paced world.
This was a really good collection of writings. I loved seeing haikus! I don’t read enough of them, so it was a lovely surprise to see them here. My favorite poem is currently, “Zoom,” only because I did attend zoom school for a bit. Everyone in class was afraid we didn’t dress properly! A couple of other poems that I enjoyed was about love. I loved how Renzo conveys it. It’s always different but it’s always love.
Renzo Del Castillo's Still takes your heart on a dreamy romantic ride throughout exotic landscapes like Monte-mare, Antigua, Lisbon and Bali to show you all the different kinds of love we may be lucky to experience in our lifetime. It is hands down one of the most inspiring poetry books I have read in a long time. I couldn't put it down. -
"Renzo Del Castillo's Still takes readers on a profound, sepia-toned, nostalgic journey through the interconnectedness of self-discovery. Acknowledging the inherent absurdity of love at first sight while embracing the transformative potential that meeting someone holds as well as the evocative feelings of culture and familial ties in this captivating collection."
This collection of poems is personal, but I saw myself in quite a few of them. Castillo's perceptions of his life and the people in it, have got me wanting to do more writing, traveling, experiencing, and sharing my life more with others. I'd rather not compare him to other poets, so hopefully future readers will enjoy his uniqueness as much as I do.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this. So this came across to me very much as a stream of consciousness writing. There was quite a bit of focus on past lives/lovers memories of strawberries and collarbones. This is not poetry you want someone younger to read. My favorite was Philautia.
An absolutely amazing poetic story that fills the soul in a certain type of way. Understanding the author’s journey from one area of the world to another is beautiful, powerful, and emotional. There’s nothing like this out there.
