Review: THE WORKERS OF INIQUITY by Tom Fowler

I really enjoy this heartfelt and endearing series starring a very special kind of private investigator, a man with a good heart, wise intellect, and the financial stability to be able to perform investigations pro bono.

C. T. Ferguson is the product of Baltimore wealth and society. He is also a gifted hacker, with a brief interment in a Hong Kong jail. In THE WORKERS OF INIQUITY he takes on the case of a failed businessman' s sudden death, which the police insist is suicide. C. T. traces threads of events leading to a sneaky usurper, and eventually uncovers a pattern of ongoing evil, destroying many lives.

The C.T. Ferguson Series:
The Reluctant Detective #1 – This is my first read by this author and I like it. This story fits into one of my all-time favorite genres with plenty of humor, action and investigations. The storylines are good and realistic, and I like that the PI is a privileged person instead of a Mickey Spillane stereotype. C.T. also has an interesting past that plays a large part in this introduction. Add in his parents, his older police Detective cousin and a good supporting cast, which all make it difficult to put the book down. The pace is steady without any boring bits. This is one of the better edited books I’ve seen from an Indie author. 4*

The Unknown Devil #2 - Another difficult to put down fast paced pages full of intrigue, suspense and action. Unfortunately, this is my fourth read, instead of my second, but that did not detract from the meshing of previous storylines with the current lines. This book is well thought out in plot and character development along with realistic dialogues, realistic fight scenes and a smart mouthed character full of himself with plenty of good humor. There is infrequent use of vulgar language considering the criminal elements involved. Interesting information about the hacking of cellphones and other electronics. There is a bit too much detailing of insignificant information: clothing; cooking; etc., but still a worthy read. 4*

The Workers of Iniquity #3 - Even with the relaxed pace, this is another hard to put down book. There are multiple storylines happening and if that is not enough to hold your interest, here are a few more added. The characters are interesting and they have good dialogues and work in their roles. C. T. has been a PI for almost a year at this point. The solutions and the way problems are handled are entertaining; some have a good revenge edge and others bring rewards. The crime topics are more than loan sharking. 4*

Already Guilty #4 – I could not put this book down. Well written, fasted paced, and intriguing with great storylines and characters, a real page-turner. Bits reminded me of Lithgow and Denzel’s revenge movie, but the author does well making this his work. There are plenty of good characters, old and new, and the storylines merge well with the story’s plot and the past books. Of course, there is always something or someone to mess up the flow, but that is what makes the series interesting. C.T. is C.T. and you cannot help but respect him and his efforts, and he has a hard row to hoe this time with his special case. I do not know how the previous books flowed since I have only read the first of this series. 5*

Daughters and Sons #5 - I enjoy reading this series. Even though I have not read all of them, I have not missed anything due to the author's talent for storytelling. The past is not thrown at the reader to figure out or reminisce over. C.T. continues to develop as more of his personality appears. He has good supporting characters, which is perfect to go along with the intriguing and interesting storylines. There is enough detail to make the reader a fly on the wall without the Hollywood dramatics or the usual stupidity found in this genre. Realistic with storylines, dialog and actions while immersed with good humor and quite a bit of smart mouth from C.T. 5*

A March From Innocence #6 - This story picks up a couple of weeks after Daughters ended. Well thought out storylines; good action scenes; intelligent dialogues; well developed characters on both sides of the law; and good humor with some romance. Clean but the topic is disgusting. Young children. Older men. Add some interesting ways that C. T. handles things makes this a difficult book to put down. 5*

Inside Cut #7 - Oh, dear. My first C. T. book that did not work for me. It felt incomplete, like not everything was there, no enthusiasm on Mr. Fowler's end. True, I do not care much for college sports so the topic was not my cup of tea. I did like a past method coming to play; never think if something (or someone) is outdated that it cannot work in the present or future. Lack of education and experience is easy to beat. The storylines dragged a bit for me but the characters were good, like always. I disagree with the outcome on Eddie, the old family friend should have his due. Although, the way the storyline went on involving Bruno in the first place did not work for me. C. T. came through and did his usual good work helping others and correcting the outcome of an uncovered crime. While this story is not on par with the others in this series, it is still an OK read. 3*

The Next Girl #8 - C. T. is back again with new storylines that move at a fast pace through the frustrations, the investigations and the pain of his newest case. Well thought out and vividly told, this is a difficult story to put down. The new characters run the gamut while the old do their jobs. It is easy to figure out the who and the why, but it is still an interesting, intriguing read. 5*

Dead Cat Bounce #11 - I missed a few books in this series but it was easy to get back in the groove. While I think some of the previous books were better, which may be due to the missing books gap, this story is still a good read. Interesting. Good storylines and good characters. TJ is a good addition to the mix. It was easy to finish the book without interruptions. 4*

Don't Say Her Name, C.T. Ferguson #12 - This is one of my favorite characters and series. There is plenty of interesting characters, an interesting writing style and interesting story lines. It is best to start with the first book since there is a continuous building of new onto the old, BUT it is not necessary. Fortunately, Fowler does not rehash the past in great detail in his books, he keeps the present book interesting. There is action, romance and humor. Language is mostly clean; a very minimum on the vulgar, which is character-related. The romance is clean without the stupid arguments and ridiculous mind sets that other authors add for drama, but mischievous and adult dialog between the two lovers. There is the mysterious disappearance of a client's father but C.T. has to figure out the who of why he and his family are targets. Another in one sitting read. 5*

Night Comes Down, C.T. Ferguson #13 - Interesting. I like that this book is about hacking and revenge. Well written with interesting story lines, a good blending of old and new, along with some intense bits made this another hard to put down read. 5*

Concrete Angels, #14 - Pretty interesting with a bigger role in the narration and duties for TJ. The good story lines kept me involved in the book and some of the characters are doozies. 5*

Novellas:
Hong Kong Dangerous, prequel - This is an interesting introduction to C.T. and his cousin Rick. The events in this short, quickly read novella lays the path to C. T. becoming PI. C.T. is in HK hacking and being a nuisance to the Chinese government. He and his cohorts are arrested and C.T. finds himself in prison. Rick is a sergeant in the Bmore police force working hard to become a detective. A few of the other repeat characters are mentioned but not in detail. 4*

3.5 Red City Blues - This is an interesting read perfect for quick getaway. The timeline is a year after he starts his PI business. A basic well told story with none of the usual detailed cooking or running scenes. 4*
The C.T. Ferguson Series end.

This is another caper with C.T. Ferguson, former hacker and son of a wealthy couple, who now has to make up for his previous mistakes and earn his trust fund payments, by helping others. His way of doing this is to work, for free, as a private investigator. His next case, is one of a missing husband, Stanley Rodgers. The man’s wife, Pauline, calls C.T. late one night, saying her husband has booked into a hotel, having taken the contents of their bank account to try and buy and sell stocks to repay his debts.

His wife doesn’t know where he is and tried to stop him doing something so reckless, but he wouldn’t listen and she hasn’t been able to contact him for nearly two days nor know what hotel he has locked himself away in. When C.T. finally agrees to an office visit, he realises that he actually knows the couple, through his parent’s circle of friends. Stanley has borrowed money from a loan shark, to fund his attempt to make more money to help his family get back to where they were.

C.T.’s investigation leads to a dead body in a hotel room, then goes on a tangent, with a loan shark who believes any family member is responsible for a debt owed to him. Clues start leading him to sinister findings, with young boys, but mostly young girls going missing. There seems to be a black market working underground, with the worst of humanity, often those amongst the richest in the world, taking advantage of victims being sold to the highest bidder, in cases of human trafficking.

As usual, C.T. has put himself in a place of danger, as he continues to push and try to solve both his initial case and the cases that have ended up being interwoven all together in this tale of loan sharks, enforcers, debt, human trafficking and murder.

Another good read from the author, that is very relevant in the present day. Human trafficking is widespread, with people being trafficked even to what would be considered a safe country, to be sent to work as slaves or prostitutes. Often taken directly from their families or neighbourhoods, or from the long lines of refugees escaping war and famine, then shipped to an even worse situation, to pay back their passage or be put to work for no pay.

Debt is an increasing problem, worldwide. Those in the Western world, spend outside their earnings. Some is caused by drugs, alcohol or gambling. Some can be caused by family splits or losing your job. There are many reasons behind poverty and the desperation of trying to keep a family together, to feed and clothe them even.

This one really hits home and can give various different messages, for those who read it. It can be taken as a complex thriller of a P.I. case, with all the twists and different trails to follow, which takes you on a ride from a simple missing person case to more complex matters, going onto the dark side of crime!

I have read and bought each of the books, from this author, in the C.T. Ferguson Private Investigator Mystery series and you just get to learn more about C.T. and his almost accidental way of working through his investigations, his personal life and the development of his character. Easy to read, with cases that are never as simple as they may seem, often with danger to the main characters and a service all done for free!

I received an ARC of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Workers of Iniquity by Robert Fowler

CT Ferguson is a private detective with a difference. He has wealthy parents, takes only the cases that really interest him and works pro bono. He also has an impressive resume for any private detective with a background and skills list that are slowly leaked to the reader during the book.
In this case he is asked to look into the disappearance of a bankrupt husband, and as is the way of things this rapidly becomes a murder investigation. This is when the story changes from the normal way of things, it seems that the victim hadn't just disappeared in order to make one last coup in the hope of redeeming himself, this was part of it but as the background to his actions and the eventual, and all too common, result happened it was the start of a large ball of wool being untangled and followed right to the end.
While the tale itself is one that in today's society is all too common, unpleasant though it is, the writer has covered the subject with delicacy, showing all the degrading and systematic abuse without the need to recourse to the vulgarity, profanities and unnecessary descriptions that are a part and parcel of so many modern books. The slave trade is despicable at the best of times but the trend for graphic description merely desensitises the modern reader to the very nature of the horrors so when a writer is able to cover the topic with delicate yet explicit enough descriptions the readers imagination is more than capable of filling in the gaps making the end result even more effective than the most minutely accurate picture can ever be. Add in the small retaliations against the surviving gang members by Ferguson and his unofficial associates, officially unofficial, which make the reader cheer and are probably more realistic than those in many novels, and the end result is a book that is worth every cent. This is a series that is well worth following by a writer who is able to prove beyond all doubt that you don't need to use foul language, blood and gore everywhere with almost non stop violence in every chapter to tell a excellent, if horrifically fairly modern and increasingly common, story in a way that brings home the real tragedies of the victims and their families.

C.T. is back. The Workers of Iniquity is the third book that stars C.T Ferguson P. I. Being a P.I. has its pros and cons. The Pros: C.T. has the freedom to choose his cases and work when he decides. The Cons: C.T. has to take the cases his Mom wants, since she is providing the paycheck. C.T. does not take missing or cheating spouse cases. He learned the hard way on his first case - The Reluctant Detective. Unfortunately, he has to take this one because Mom says so. Boy is he in for a shock! Surprisingly, the case of the missing husband evolves into...... Guess, you'll have read it. The story grabs your attention from the beginning. The plot is well written and the characters are very life-like. FYI: I started reading on Saturday and finished it Sunday morning. Another sleepless night!
I received an ARC [advanced readers copy].I enjoyed it so much that I preordered the book as soon as it was available. I recommend The Workers of Iniquity to all mystery readers. Especially those who enjoy a good, fast moving ,adventurous mystery that has plenty of sarcastic humor.

C.T. gets a call which wakes him up. The person on the phone wants him to take a case to locate her husband. He has been away a couple of days and she has no information where he is at. C.T. told her to call back the next day. When C.T. finally meets up with this client, he determines that he knows these people through his parents. C.T. takes the case, but it turns out to be more than originally thought. The husband was involved with a loan shark and wound up being killed.

C.T. began looking for information and find out more about the loan shark. As a result C.T. wound up being shot and so he got himself a bodyguard, Rollins. As they pursued further, another event occurred which led C.T. to search in another direction. What he found made him bring in Rich, his cousin, and a captain of the State Police. Along with Rollins and the rest of his team, they discovered the location of the culprits. A shootout happened between the two sides.

To discover what and who was behind the last event, then you must read this book. It is definitely worth your time.

This book is a great combination of a very exciting thriller, lightened with a lot of humorous asides, mainly about food, pretty women and hacking into the local police force computers. C.T Ferguson is a unique creation, a very privileged young man, who is a skilled computer hacker and also managed to get himself jailed in Hong Kong, before he was ejected from that country, and so is now persona non grata with that country's police force. The result is that he now works as a P.I. without any payment from the customer, but the drawback is that his mother chooses his cases and pays him.
This story concerns an accountant who managed to get into severe debt, and was then found dead in a posh hotel penthouse, apparently by suicide, but C.T. is retained to investigate. The story then evolves into a tale of loan sharking and eventually sex trafficking.
There is plenty of action and great believable characters, making this a very readable book.

I love this series. The storyline in this latest edition is filled with action and spiffy dialogue. The characters are becoming more three dimensional and interesting.

This time C.T. case starts off with a missing person. Not just any missing person but one involved with a loan shark. When he has to deliver bad news to his client she begs him to find her husbands killer. As each stage of the book progresses the action builds and CTs client needs him to help her more and more until the case he is working on barely resembles the one he took.

I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.

C.T. Ferguson is trying to help an old acquaintance when her husband goes missing along with all the money in their bank account. But she isn't the only person involved in this issue. As C.T. follows the digital trial, he discovers a crime scene and the husband's loan shark. This guy is not a nice guy at all. Not only that, but C.T. has uncovered a sinister black market where humanity’s worst sins are sold to the highest bidder. Now C.T. has to work fast before more bodies are found. Can he do it? If you like crime thrillers then this book is for you. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I just couldn't put this one down!

Poor C.T. has done it again by stumbling into a case that is larger than he could have imagined. Mr. Fowler knows how to weave mystery, intrigue, humor, and right side of the line law breaking. As usual the reader is left just as much in the dark as the main character letting the plot play out as it will without once thinking “the butler did it in the parlor with the wrench” from the early stages and proven correct. You won't have to work to finish this one but you'll work just as hard as C.T. to solve it.

Loved this book! C.T. Ferguson is a young (28, 29) PI in Baltimore, and the story is filled with sights (and eateries!) familiar to Baltimorans. Makes me want to visit the city. C.T. is a hacker, and that's how he does a lot of his sleuthing, but he also goes out and does "real" (fictional) PI things. The plot is great, starting with a suicide that probably isn't, and gets into some seedier things as the story goes on. A new book in the series is to be released on Dec. 3, and I've pre-ordered it. (I rarely pre-order books based on a single sample--in fact, this may be the first time.)

As expected, Tom Fowler has again given us a great novel with his main character, C.T. Ferguson. I'm not going to say anything about the plot except there are more in depth twists and turns than usual. I, for one, loved that part. I enjoy the bits about his personal life but I'm totally looking forward to the day I read about his background in China. I'm sure it's coming so I guess I'll just wait. Thanks for another great read Tom!!!

Tom Fowler is a bright star on the rise!

Having read all three of the C.T. Ferguson novels, I must say I have found a writer that leaves me wanting more! Mr. Fowler has developed a very strong character that you can identify with. Yes, he may be a wealthy privileged brat, but with good intentions. C.T.'s personality, wit, and sarcasm are reminiscent of that of Nelson DeMille's John Corey or Paul Levine's Jake Lassiter.

Here's hoping the next episode is close by!

C.T. Ferguson is back with another case. Everything I've come to want and love from these books is here with C.T. blurring the line between legal and not-so-legal as he tries to help a widow investigate the death of her husband. Of course it's never as simple as that for C.T. and he has a few problems along the way as well as a few fist fights. This is an enjoyable addition to a great series that I've loved right from the start.

Best CT Ferguson Yet

CT is back getting in deeper with his (girl)friend Gloria, fighting baddies, and working with good guys in both Baltimore City and County this time.
Along with the usual cooking, dining, and sleuthing he manages to get shot at several times. And in a few fights, plus he has some chances to practice his Chinese.
Once I got to the middle, I read whenever I had time. I can’t wait to see what is next.

Very, very good 👍

The worst criminals in this planet are those who make their money selling and buying innocent people (and near extinction animals).
They are at the top of the list.
The list follows with Murders One, thief/thugs of all colours, and petty ones who think (think?) that work is for dummies, so why not live "free" at the cost of benefiting from people that make their living working hard 24/7?

I'm hooked!

The kinda bad boy growing up and trying to help people PI has some mind blowing adventures.

The niche he's been working seems to have a real need: folks who need PI help but don't have the money.

CT may be too late to save himself, his client or their families if he doesn't use his whole network and skills.

Edge of your seat action.

Totally fun read!

Loved this book!

C.T. gets involved with the wife of a murdered man, trying to solve his murder. The victim owed a lot of money to a loan shark, who is now threatening the wife. Meanwhile, her daughter is kidnapped and C. T. has his hands full with his biggest case yet. Very thrilling book!

A tough case well handled

In this book the case that C. T. worked on morphed into something very serious: human trafficking. The author did a pretty good job dealing with the subject. The pursuit of the bad guys was nearly fatal for C. T. His skills continue to develop as he's faced with greater challenges.

My love for C.T. Ferguson, ex techie turned P.I., has only deepened more with each book I read.

This third book takes the action into a darker place, ramping up the danger. C.T. finds his way, blossoming as a P.I., while maintaining his witty charm.

I am hooked and will be a reader of the entire series.

Well written. Action packed. Great character.

Really getting back into the world of CT and his way of operating along with his relationship with Gloria.
A novel of investments, loan sharking, kidnapping, people smuggling and of course murders. CT has to team up with cousin Rich, Gonzalez and gain a bodyguard. Lovely moments of humour make this another fabulous read.

The best of this innovative series. Mind, the first 2 novels were very good also. In this one, though, CT Ferguson begins to be comfortable in his skin as a pro bono PI with exceptional hacking skills.

C.T. Ferguson is my favorite PI and he always finds himself in dire circumstances. I love discovering how he finds or, more likely, fights his way out of many predicaments. I highly recommend this book and the entire series and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Can't put down

This book has everything: a likable PI, a cop friend, a wonderful girlfriend, a bad guy and a mystery to solve.
