I'm setting this collection aside for a while. I've read 4 of the stories, and they are all at the same 3-star level. Each had the potential to be strong and sexy, but never really reached the level of intensity, both for action and sex, that I was expecting.
Very mixed quality of stories. Sadly, none of the new to me authors were interesting enough for me to pursue reading their stories. There was one story that I DNFed.
Against the Dark - Carolyn Crane: 4-Stars This is my first book by Carolyn Crane and it is a winner. It is so great to discover a new author who can write the style of book that I love most. I look forward to reading many more of her works. This book is fast paced and has great character development, something lacking in a lot of books. I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes.
The Association, a quasi crime fighting organization whose agents are nerd smart. Cole reminds me of that old TV show "Numbers" where two brothers worked together to solve crime. Cole is the perfect blend of both brothers. Scary smart and down dirty crime fighter. Unique for most heroes.
Angel is Latina, a beautiful interior designer and an ace safe cracker. She gave up "the life" five years ago, but a situation has forced her back for a one-off. Unfortunately, she and her posse didn't get away clean and Cole, undercover, must make Angel cooperate in order to accomplish his mission.
Skin Deep - Pamela Clare: 5-Stars Sweet, poignant romance about a hero with scars on the outside and a heroine with scars on the inside. Each must learn to trust the other and themselves. Really, really wonderful romance and a suspense that, while predictable, still keeps you interested. For a short book, this one really lives large.
Singed - Kaylea Cross: 4-Stars Real, raw and relevant. There were parts on this plot I wasn't happy with, but it was a real portrayal of life after military service and that not all servicemen come home whole after their experiences in a war zone.
Claire Tierney’s family is her father and brother, both former Green Berets. Her father is a functioning alcoholic and her brother is barely functioning with PTSD after his service. Claire has really good reasons for not wanting a relationship with Gage Wallace, in addition to the fact that he is also a former Green Beret.
But, Fate has different plans for Claire and she is thrown together with Gage on a taskforce in a quest to find a terrorist on American soil and the clock is ticking. Claire works for the NSA and Gage works for Titanium Security and now it looks like Claire could be a target. Gage will do whatever it takes to keep her safe, even if it puts him in danger.
I can't take this anymore. I'm beyond bored and plain disappointed.
Will review each story as soon as I finish it, or I fear I'd forget them all at the end.
Giving It Up by Amber Lin: This story could've been the diamond in the rough of the collection. The way it started, its powerful first chapter was a delight to read. I didn't stop, delighfully captivated by a great prose and two mysterious characters who met and had sex in a matter of three, four pages. It was quick, fucking hot and terribly charming. I thought this is it, I'm going to love this one. The MC is screaming "I'm beautifully flawed!" to me and I can't resist.
So I kept reading Giving it up not only willingly, but also giddily, happily! The guy, Colin, was a freaking alpha who refused to follow Allie's request to be rough with her, and spent like 20 minutes going down on her. I fell in love with him immediately, you can call it a bad case of insta-love. I thought it'd have been a novella with these two meeting at night, with Colin slowly fucking Allie into happiness and self-respect again. I could see how theraupetic it could've been, Cara McKenna's style. But it wasn't, they went from perfect fuck buddies to "friends", to "lovers" in a week. Turned out Allie wasn't even aware of what she was doing most of the time, while Colin had fallen in love with her, while watching her hooking up with another guy outside the club where they had met... Allie selected one night a month to go out, find the first guy who wanted to hurt her and have sex with him. Because she'd been raped and needed to reenact the awful situation, making sure she could control and allow it. If she asked for it, it was okay after all. Nothing against that, except that I expected Colin to talk her into seeking serious help. He didn't, he just fucked her the way she wanted. When she later confessed it had been her best friend raping her, friend she later met again and with whom even shared a couple of jokes, I understood the story had turned into a big fucking mess. I couldn't accept the way rape had been "used" to allow and explain that kind of sex, I couldn't believe Allie would even talk to her rapist, go to live with a guy she barely knew, leave her job because he asked her to and threatened her boss. The beautiful, original story had turned into the usual rich-controlling-alpha-asshole-dictates-his-protégé's-life. And the magic suddenly disappeared. 2 stars.
Skin Deep by Pamela Clare: The couple in this story is part of Mrs. Clare famous series "I-Team", that I started reading a few years ago, following the enthusiastic reviews of a lot of GR friends. Don't remember which one it was exactly, and I don't remember that book being cheesy and a bit over-the-top like Megan and Nathaniel's one. From what I've discovered, each story in this huge collection is part of the author's already established and famous series, so I hope it won't confuse me, to find characters that for those who know every single series, have been already mentioned.
Anyway, Skin Deep could've been the perfect guilty pleasure read for me. When it comes to romance and sex, I'm just as mercurial as I am in every other aspect of my life. I like to change, to explore, to test my limits. Big Marines aren't exactly my cup of tea, but sometimes it feels nice to read about a guy who'd do everything in his power to protect the woman he loves. The fierce loyalty and utter self-abnegation can be a wonderful turn-on and Nate was the perfect "sweet" alpha. That is, until I found out the heroine couldn't even take care of herself, didn't even have sense to solve her own problems. So helpless and naive and dull, that I found it hard to believe she'd been through all those horrible things that were later revealed. Both Megan and Nate were two freaking stereotypes (the first unbearably so): the hero and the victim, the scarred people who found each other and healed together. It was insta-love, it was insta-attraction, it was insta-boredom and for that reason, I'm giving it 2,5 stars.
I was able to receive this story through a box set on Amazon. While the story was interesting I felt I was lost. Maybe if I had read the series... but I was confused through the most part of the story.
a solid 3.5 stars All of these are worth reading, some more than others; no amazing must reads but enough to introduce and maybe get you hooked on new series (new to you, not recently published)
Carolyn Crane - Against the Dark - This was a fast paced action book with plenty of smexy moments. Agents whose main strengths are their brains but yet still have plenty of brawn make up The Associates. Cole Hawkins has been working undercover to gather information on a shipment of children being shipped over internationally to be used and killed. While on assignment he meets a woman who turns out to be a safecracker whose specialty in safes happens to be the one he needs into to get the name and location of the ship. This was defiantly a different take on the typical bad ass alpha males you typically read in these type of books. Cole’s nerdyness was cute while still having plenty of alpha ways.
Pamela Clare - Skin Deep - Both Megan Hunter and Nathaniel West had been through hell in their lives. Megan being bounced around the system that didn’t protect her that got her thrown in juvie at such a young age only to be raped repeatedly over and over. After surviving that she finally meets her brother but one of the guards that had been part of her rape turns out to be someone her brother works with and she shoots him. After running and her brother taking the rap for her she ends up addicted to heroin and pregnant and in jail where she has her baby. After a lot more drama Megan now has custody of her daughter and a job and the love and support of her brother and sister in law. But she has never forgiving herself for her past and doesn’t think she will ever be able to let a man touch her without remembering the past.
Nate was in the Marines and stationed in Afghanistan when his team was on their way back was hit by an IED. The right side of his body from his ear to his leg had sustained second and third degree burns. He lost many good friends in the blast and even the ones that did manage to survive some took their own lives after due to the horrific damage to their bodies. His fiancé left him due to not being to handle the way he looked now. Nate ended up going back to live with his father and working with horses and living a sheltered life away from others so they wouldn’t be disgusted with the way he looked.
Both Megan and Nat had the same views about themselves. Neither could imagine anyone loving them the way they were. Megan had the hardest time dealing with this strange attraction to a man. I loved how Pamela compared it to the intense longing for heroin but instead of it being something dark and desperate is was something pure and clean. Many addicts are surprised in there sobriety that they can actually feel emotions like that and it not be for something bad. Nate couldn’t image a woman looking at him and not cringing at all of his scars. Our hero wore his scars and the outside and our heroine wore hers on the inside. It was very touching to see that the two of them were like the antibiotic the other needed to heal.
I have to also say that I loved the wedding epilogue was sooo touching that it brought tears to my eyes and I wasn’t even actually here.
Misty Evans – Deadly Pursuit - This action packed suspense had it all. Romantic suspense fans be sure to add this one to your reading list.
From the opening scene of a undercover young FBI agent seducing and arresting the man every alphabet soup agency wanted to again having to bring him down after he escaped and caused so much death in her life you are glued to the pages.
Celina Davenport is just a rookie FBI agent but managed to get herself a potential career changing undercover job with SCVC if she can bring down the mafia leader. What got her through the undercover op was she would finally be able to act on her crush on the leader of the SCVC taskforce and join his team. What she got after the arrest was neither of those. She was turned down by him and then sent off to a small FBI office in Iowa after her face was plastered over Time magazine ruining her chances of undercover work ever again.
DEA Agent Cooper Harris was impressed with Celina’s work and did find himself attracted to her but being her senior from both a work stand point and in age he refused to give into the young FBI’s infatuation and walked away. Then 6 months later there worlds collide again in Iowa on an op that collides between the FBI and DEA. Not soon after its found out that Emilio the Mafia leader she helped put in prison has escaped and is coming for her but not before he kills the ones she cares about. The killer is ruthless in some of the ways he takes her friends down – I mean like in cringe worthy eww moments (love getting those moments). Cooper vows he will do everything to protect Celina which turns out to be harder than he thought in many ways. This book had every ingredient I look for in a romantic suspense/thriller book and I loved it.
All of these books were exciting to read and I have made a review for 4 of them ..
Katie Reus -Sensual Surrender (The Serafina: Sin City #2) This book brings us Ellie and Jay’s Story
Jay has been working for Wyatt for a bit now as his head of security and he fell hard for Ellie who was young but so sweet and so beautiful in his eyes. After the explosion (Book #1) that almost killed him Ellie pretty much has moved in with Jay. Someone from her past however has came into town making demands on her. In her own way to protect Jay and Wyatt she decides to leave a note for Jay and leave town. Well she doesn't get too far. Will Ellie trust in Jay? Can they save each other? Jay is HOT !!!! The Passion between Jay and Ellie ROCK !!!
Pamela Clare - Skin Deep (I-Team #5.5) This was a first for me by this author. Let me say WOW .. I need to grab the other books in this series. We have a scarred Marine who is now a rancher on his familys ranch and a young woman who is trying to escape her past and a crazed ex. Nathaniel and Megan will heal each other from the inside out. Awesome Story !!
Kaylea Cross - Singed (Titanium Security #2) This was a first for me by this author. And again I say WOW what a great story.
We have Cage 2nd in command with the Titanium Security Team and NSA analyst Claire who broke up six months ago. But they are brought back together by many things. First Claire's brother is fighting PTSD and seems to be a burden or is he? Then someone is after Claire and Cage is determined to protect her whether she wants him to or not.
Can these two find their way back to each other? Very sad , Steamy HOT book !!! Loved it !!
Giving It Up (The Lost Girls #1) Amber Lin
Another New to me Author . This book was very intense and action packed as well. We meet Allie who is a young woman with a child who has had the worst of offenses done to her by whom she thought was her best friend. Allie goes about forgetting it totally wrong and while out at a club one night she meets Colin who has a shady past but he doesn't want to hurt Allie. He wants to be her savior. These 2 take us on a whirlwind and the heat meter is scorching .. Great Book !!
I've been waiting for this box set to come out! I've already read two of the books, and the stories were amazing. I'm sure the others will be too. The first one I have read is Deceptive Treasures by Dianna Love. It is part of her Slye Temp series, which is very exciting! I really enjoy that series! Tanner and Jin have one of the most action-packed books in the series! It starts off in North Korea with a mission that goes wrong, and it is non-stop from there. The other one I have read is Deadly Pursuit by Misty Evans. This is another very suspenseful and hot series. Cooper and Celina are coworkers and have been trying to stay away from each other. There is a lot keeping them apart, including some very creepy bad guys. This was another thrilling book.
So....if you are looking for excitement and suspense, with some serious hotness mixed in, then this set is perfect. As I said, I've only read two of the books, but if the others are anything like the two I've read, this set is a must read.
This was a very good collection of books. I only had three real negatives with the collection- or rather with two of the books in the collection.
Overall, I was impressed with the quality of books that I read in this collection- specially when I picked it up for $.99.
But my few negatives:
Against the Wall - blah. Didn't like it.
Lethal Confessions - I couldn't even be bothered to finish it. I suffered to chapter 15 and then said, no way, I'm finished. Perhaps because it was about baseball. Perhaps because I wasn't impressed with the author in the only other book that I've read by the husband/wife team.
Deadly Pursuit- I actually liked this book, however, I'd already read it. IN ANOTHER COLLECTION. I don't like the fact that this made it into two collections. Why wouldn't the author try to go with book two in the series (if there's a series) or something new? Especially as the other collection that I'd read this in couldn't possibly be more than a year or so old.
I have already read a couple of these stories. This is a terrific value for the price!
One in particular is Giving It Up by Amber Lin.
This is a haunting story. Allie is so messed up by the life she has had to lead, she seeks one-night-stands with total strangers. She wants rough, hard sex, no motel rooms... just step out into the alley by the parking lot and do the deed. As you probably read in the blurb, she thinks this is alright because this is by mutual consent. Is this punishment or is this a way to deal with all the betrayals that have shadowed her life?
All is fine she thinks, until she is viciously raped one night. Someone comes to her rescue - and this is the beginning of her life turning around.
There are scenes with sex, drugs, rape, and more in this book. It is brilliantly written, but it will break your heart. I felt like I needed to protect her and nurture her. You will question if she has been hurt so deep that she is too far gone for salvation. Be forewarned and keep the tissues handy.
Read: Against the Wall, DJ Adams, really good romance/thriller, loads of drama a kinda race against time for Jess to get 8 million to save her kidnapped family, sounds easy enough but she didn't plan on a ex-con hell bent on revenge towards the boss who is the only man that can help her. Tanner out of prison after 7 years for a crime he didn't commit wants justice from the man who took his life away, he just didn't expect a little firecracker of a fluffball to get in his way. Jess and Tanner become unlikely allies to help each other in their goals. it's fast paced, loads of action/drama and more steamy than I thought it would be but it's all good, great characters especially Jess's family, loved her mum and dad, her mum was a feisty one! Some really sweet moments between Jess and Tanner loved the last chapter (which had me holding my breath) and last line was just perfect. Great start to this boxset.
I have reviewed each of the books in this series individually. Overall, this box set was worth the .99c I paid for it. I enjoyed at least three of the stories and read six others to varying degrees of lesser enjoyment. Some of the books focus very heavily on the danger and suspense/ mystery aspect with VERY minor desire/ relationship foci. This kind of genre does not appeal to me usually. I did enjoy a couple of them, surprisingly. There were also a few that I did not enjoy at all and one I DNF, mainly because I had overload of danger. There were a couple of authors that I would definitely read more of such as Pamela Clare. Would I recommend this box set? If you enjoy a mystery or danger or suspense - very worth it. If you like a good romance- don't bother. 3 stars
This was different because the woman is not a member of the Iteam and the newspaper and that kind of investigation were not involved in the story. This was about Marc Hunter's sister, so it was more of a law enforcement story. It's funny the way all the investigative journalists are ending up with military / law enforcement type husbands.
This is more of a long novella/ short book. It involves two people damaged in different ways looking beyond the damage that others see to truly see the person the other is. It's a great story and fun to see others from the series too.
When I purchased this set, I had already read 2 of the books, Katie's and Kaylea's. I wasn't expecting much because most sets, especially $0.99, give you novellas and firsts in a series. MAN was I WRONG!!! I now have 8 new favorite authors to add to my list. Each book was a full on suck you in and keep you there until you finished. There were nights that I couldn't put my kindle down until I was finished with that book. Some of the books made me cry, some made me laugh and all were action packed. Totally worth the 99 pennies!!!
Mixed reviews here. I like that all of the stories appear to be full-length, which is not always the case in anthologies. I gave 4 stars to Guarding Suzannah and Skin Deep, amd three to everthing else, especially Singed and Sensual Surrender.
This was a really good bundle It had ten full length novels for a really good price. Its great to test out new authors who I hadn't read before, and see if I liked their style. Its great value and certainly would read any of these authors again. A great bang for your buck!
