She received four degrees from the University of Illinois because she didn't have the gumption to go anywhere else, and spent most of her career at the university, eventually earning a PhD, working in departmental administration, publishing and libraries. Her specialties are 15th-16th century European history, polar exploration, and food history. She may be one of the few people in America to never live outside her home state.
In graduate school, she met and married the love of her life. They shared a love of music, theater, travel and cats. He died in 2013.
Sharon also loves hockey, reading, cooking, writing, and various less elevated activities like eating cookies and sampling gins and single malts. After spending most of her life in a medium-sized university town she moved back to Chicago in 2017 so she could go to more Blackhawks games and spend quality time at Eataly. She hopes to accomplish a lifetime goal by publishing a book this year. Unfortunately her other lifetime goal, to be English, is likely to remain unfulfilled.

Sharon Micahlove captivated me back in 2022 with At First Sight and when I saw she was doing a romantic thriller I knew I had to get my hands on it. Her type of storytelling is so unique that from the moment the story starts you are entranced by not only the words but the characters. Dead in the Alley left me holding my breath until the very end and I never would have guessed the secrets to be revealed...
A second chance romance amongst murder and mayhem is where we find Bay. After her husband is brutally murdered, she just wants to know why. When truths start to come out, she is second guessing why she even wanted the answers in the first place because her husband isn't exactly the man, she thought he was.
Enter Greg, Bay's ex, and a detective for the narcotics unit. He can't believe Bay would have anything to do with her husband's death, but it has been years since he has seen her and even though people can change, he doesn't believe she could have changed that much.
Events keep putting Bay in Greg's past and both still feel the spark that once was there before Greg made choices that ended them. Can these two lost souls find one another amidst a murder investigation or are the traumas of past and present to strong?
Andrew Eiden and Stella Hunter brought these characters to life and after hearing their telling of this story they will always be Bay and Greg to me. Greg was protective even before things started to progress between him and Bay and Andrew captivated that. Stella is just a one woman show in all her of narrations and the emotions she can convey always continue to pull me in.
Sharon Micahlove gave us a balancing act of romance and heart stopping suspense. I hope we see more stories from this little town she created because there is so much more to be told...

An OK book that's not very suspenseful or mysterious. I had most of it figured out before I was half-way through. For me, it gets half-way to 5 stars, so I'd give it 2.5 if I could.
The writing is adequate, but the novel is rife with continuity & transition problems: call me fussy, but these are the things that stop me dead in my tracks.
To name a few: FMC is wearing cargo pants in the attic, by the time she gets downstairs, it's chef's pants; the dog was laying at MMC's feet, but he "went over" to pet him; and where FMC's sauteeing ham & onions in MMC's kitchen, after which MMC looks for "the only frying pan I owned."
In another scene, MMC & friend are having coffee & leftover donuts in their new shop, and he has thoughts about a call he took "while we were eating". Now the "we" in the scene are the two men, and there's no mention that the call came in the previous night. Very confusing and easily corrected by simply substituting "Bay and I" for "we" or adding "last night" to the phrase.
There's also a lot of repetition, as in chairs crashing over whenever anyone stands, or him constantly pressing his hand against her back.
In the acknowledgments, author states she wrote the book "in record time". Unfortunately, it shows.

Dead in the Alley by Sharon D. Michalove is a mystery.
This story is a nice mix of mystery and romantic suspense. A well-written story, with good world-building, and is told by a dual pov. The plot is simple and easy to follow. It starts with death and a cryptic monologue. After that, there is a slow unraveling of the mystery. Except for the small description of the main murder, there aren't any gruesome scenes so it's perfect for all readers.
The action and the suspense are rather mellow which makes the book seem like a cozy mystery if you add the fact that it's in a small town. The characters were nice, likable, and relatable. Greg and Bay had good chemistry and their romance was sweet. I liked that they were high school sweethearts that had a second chance at love. My favorite part was their first date.
I enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it to all mystery lovers. I will rate it with 4 stars.

More of a romance than a mystery or suspense story.
The book started out well, but lost it’s way about 1/4 of the way through. It didn’t gain it’s footing until the last few chapters. I did like the way the author went back and forth between Bay’s and Greg’s point of view. There were several issues going on at once, and I felt like the author rushed through a lot of it just to have it resolved. More time spent on each issue would have gone a long way in making this a much better book.

With Dead in the Alley, Sharon Michalove has found her sweet spot. Her writing voice ideally suits this style of mystery and romance. Her characters are complicated, interesting people with unique backgrounds. While murder is the main focus of the mystery, a family secret adds intriguing layers to the plot. And as her readers have come to expect, she doesn’t neglect the food. Never read a Michalove without something delicious on hand!

Dead in the Alley, narrated by Andrew Eiden and Stella Hunter, hooked me right from the start! This romantic thriller is set in a small town, and the narrators bring the story to life with their unique voices. Bay Bishop, the restaurant owner, and Detective Greg Musgrave, her old high school sweetheart, make for one intense duo as they try to solve a murder case and deal with their complicated feelings for each other. The suspenseful plot had me on the edge of my seat, with unexpected twists that kept me guessing. The characters were well-drawn, thanks to Eiden and Hunter's incredible performances. Plus, the audiobook touched on family dynamics and personal struggles, adding depth to the story. And that ending! It caught me off guard and left me hungry for more. Overall, this well-crafted romantic thriller was a total hit for me. I highly recommend checking out the audiobook if you're into suspenseful stories with engaging characters and a small-town vibe. You won't be disappointed!

Derrick Anderson is run over, several times, by a motorcycle in the alley behind the bar/restaurant he owns with his wife, Bay Bishop. Who could have wanted him dead? When local part-time policeman Greg Musgrove begins his investigation, it’s more because of a possible drug connection than because of the murder. He’s known Bay since they were kids, dated her in high school, and then ghosted her when his cycling career took off. He can’t see her as a murderer, and is also reluctant to believe that she is connected to narcotics trafficking. His police partner is less likely to cut Bay any slack. Everyone, including Bay, is taken aback when she discovers that she is basically broke – no money coming in from anywhere, no insurance on the property, nada. Then the building is set on fire. She has to move back in with her parents, something she really doesn’t want to do. There are other sub-plots; Greg’s biking buddy Danny is setting up a bike shop with Greg, and there might be some romance going on between Danny and Bay’s best friend, Terrie. Greg is definitely serious about trying to rekindle the relationship he had with Bay all those years ago. It’s a decent mystery, and a relatable love story. I should also say that it’s enchanting: according to the book blurb guide, that means there is a dog in the book. Ace is Greg’s Portuguese Water Dog and a well-trained one, to boot.
I do have one question. Were the grouse hanging prior to being on the menu [page 3] taken BEFORE grouse season, since that particular day is the first day of grouse season. Timing problem?

Bay Bishop and her husband Derrick Anderson returned to her hometown of Sherburne, Michigan from NYC two years ago and opened up an upscale restaurant, Sherburne Bistro. But tragedy strikes when Derrick is murdered in the alley by a motorcyclist. The police consider it a killing-for-hire, and when drugs are found along with money issues, Bay finds herself one of the persons of interest in her husband's murder, and her whole world is turned completely upside down.
Detective Greg Musgrave works for the Adams County Narcotics Team, and is brought into the murder case when the drugs were found at the restaurant. But there is a problem, a conflict of interest, because Bay Bishop and he were high school sweethearts, and he ghosted her eighteen years ago for a professional bike racing career in Europe, which ended abruptly when he had an accident. Now Greg finds himself investigating the woman he had loved and left behind.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I loved the intertwining of an intriguing mystery full of suspense, and the angsty underlying attraction between Bay and Greg. You can't help but hope that they can regain trust in each other, and get a second chance at rebuilding the love that was thrown away in the past.
Dead In The Alley has enough drama, tension, action, dark secrets, a touch of romance, and unexpected twists and turns that will take the reader on one heck of a thrilling roller coaster ride.

Who dunnit, why dunnit - and why they think they'll get away with it
This murder mystery is full of intrigue and complexity that keeps everyone trying to piece the clues together in the right order. All the intertwining and scrambling is pretty plausible, and the detectives comment fairly pithily on the things that are not ("I don't believe in coincidences").
Quite glad that some of the characters turned out not to be involved in it, because I liked them too much...
And when the murderer is revealed, they tell us exactly how clever they really are - in as much detail as possible. Which is a nice touch, and fits the character perfectly.
Sharon Michalove's third book, and the mysteries just keep getting better.
[I'm not a romance reader, so can't comment on that side of the book. And there were a few paragraphs where that side of things was a little too soppy for me (sorry Sharon!), but it fitted in perfectly well with the rest of the story. The gastronomy aspect of the book was also slightly lost on me, but fitted well with the chef theme.]

This is a second-time around, romantic suspense story. Bay Bishop has moved back home to small-town Michigan with her husband Derrick to start an upscale restaurant. It is a success in so many ways. But then Derrick is killed in a hit-and-run right outside the restaurant’s back door. The investigation takes an abrupt turn when a connection to drug trafficking is found. Enter Greg Musgrove, narcotics detective and the high school boyfriend who ghosted on her nearly 20 years ago.
Strengths of the story. The novel weaves together storylines: investigation into Derrick’s death; Bay’s grief over the loss of her husband and coming to grips with the sham that was her life; Greg juggling work, a new business venture, and the realization he stilled loved Bay; Bay’s conflicted reaction to being in close quarters with Greg again; and Bay’s issues with her parents and siblings. The lines are influenced by each other, which makes for a compelling, over arching story. The main characters, Bay and Greg, are likable and the main supporting characters add texture. Ms. Michalove culinary knowledge shines through and if she cooks as well as she describes in here, I want to go to her house.
Where the story fell short of ideal: The logic, my #1 test, was reasonable but not strong. I walked away with questions about why characters would do certain things – primarily the culprit and side characters, not Bay and Greg. With so many storylines, it isn’t surprising there are a lot of characters and keeping them all straight was a challenge I failed at a few times.
I haven’t decided where I fall on the start of the romance itself. Being romantic suspense, it is obvious where it is going. But Bay loves her husband. She is truly devastated when he is killed. It is hard for me to buy the quick turn to the one that got away. Yet, this is romantic suspense and that spark has to happen quickly, it’s just part of the game. Likely this is one place where readers will fall into different camps: didn’t notice; noticed but no problem with it; noticed and didn’t love it but got over it; and noticed and didn’t get over it. I enjoyed the book and am glad I finished it.
Bottom line: Dead in an Alley is for you if you like second chance, redemption romances, culinary morsels, and rich storylines that immerse you in the lives of the main characters.

Delightful setting and characters with a keep-you-guessing mystery!
Dead in the Alley was an entertaining mystery with a lovely second-chance romance with a plucky, deserving heroine in Bay Bishop. The setting is small-town Michigan, and the story has a culinary-themed foundation. The story is told from two points of view, that of Bay and Greg. However, the greater focus is on Bay, as she takes a lead role in solving the mystery and clearing her name. Deaths occur out of sight, and details are general, placing Dead in the Alley in the cozy mystery category. I loved the characters, the setting, and the whole vibe of the story, and with both main characters still having several irons in the fire, I hope the author is using the book as a jumping-off point for a new series.
Besides the highly likable main characters, there are quite a few secondary characters that really shone. In particular, I liked the two “wingmen” of the story: Terrie Sullivan and Danny Tellman. Their appearances in the story and subplot were usually fun, sometimes snarky, but always delightful. Dog lovers will enjoy Greg’s Portuguese Water Dog, Ace.The mystery behind Bay’s husband’s murder had several good suspects. The author had me suspecting some characters that were eventually shown to have no part in the events at all: subtle and tricky.
With an attractive and tantalizing Fall setting in beautiful and comfortable small-town Michigan, likable and genuine characters, and a solid, kept-me-wondering mystery, I recommend DEAD IN THE ALLEY to cozy mystery readers especially those who enjoy a culinary-themed story.I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from the author through Partners in Crime Tours.

This tale revolves around Bay and Derrick having moved back to Bay’s hometown of Sherburne where they opened a restaurant, much to Bay’s parents’ chagrin. They wanted more for Bay, but absolutely loved Derrick. It is not a spoiler to say that this tale starts out with the tragic death of Derrick, in the alley behind their restaurant. Let the police investigation begin. Enter Greg Musgrave, who works on the police force and, as fate would have it, knew Bay back in high school.

I really finished this audiobook and felt quite the conundrum. I think Dead in the Alley could have been a 5- star listen but it was a bit longer than I felt was necessary. It was just longer than I feel was necessary. I’ve never read or listened to Sharon D. Michalove previously. She isn’t a bad writer at all. The writing itself was pretty good. The story just felt unnecessary long with a lot of characters. I felt like we didn’t get deep character development. Everyone was fairly basic and a bit flat. It felt like there was several storylines happening. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fairly simple concept and I had the culprit picked out a quarter of a way through. I feel like all I’m saying is the bad. It really wasn’t a bad story, it’s was just a surface level story. Which is why I feel like it took me so long to get through.
I think the narration was my favorite part of the entire story. To be real, I’m not sure I would have finished without the great narration. Stella Hunter and Andrew Eiden were able to add a bit of personality to the characters that I felt was lacking in the story. I do what to add that the story starts out with some good mystery and a bit of suspense. Instead of compounding on that is seems to just go in to many directions. I believe it could easily be re-edited and firmed up a bit more, given some deeper characters.

In a flash, all Bay has loved and worked for is gone. Can she clear her name and rebuild her life in Northern Michigan? Dead in the Alley is a gripping mystery full of twists and turns I didn’t see coming. The plot is complex with deep-rooted secrets and shady characters. The descriptive narration is compelling which only adds to the suspense. But at the heart of this mystery is Bay, a resilient woman betrayed by her husband and those close to her.
Let’s start with the characters. Bay is a wonderfully complicated main character. Her world is rocked when her husband is murdered in the alley of their restaurant. She has no idea what he’s involved with or how she can escape unscathed. Bay is surrounded by people she thought she knew but didn’t. Her nose for sniffing out the truth makes her the perfect mystery heroine.

This is the best kind of book to hold your interest from start to finish. We follow Bay Bishop through so many life changing events in this book. Sharon is crafted in telling us stories that are moving and compelling with characters that hold onto your interest right away.
This starts shockingly with a gruesome death of Bay’s husband in the alleyway of their new restaurant. Then we’re following along on who is the murder and what is really going on behind the scenes. So many suspects and people who have secrets and are deceiving.
Bay has to deal with so many emotions here that you feel for her. Losing a husband, finding out he is involved with possible dealings with drug trafficking. More suspicious deaths and then above all that finding out information that makes Bay question who she really is.
High drama, old relationships and first loves that haven’t extinguished. All told by two of my favourite narrators. I loved this book and their performances were what really made the book come to life. I listened on the beach and it melted the day away as I watched the whales . No more perfect way of spending the day.

3.5 * Audiobook Narrators Andrew Eiden and Stella Hunter
This book was saved by the Narrators. I listened to this audiobook and honestly, I think it was good but there were too many plots going on simultaneously that I just lost interest. You have the murder of Bays Husband Derrick Which we find out he is trafficking drugs and also cheating on Bay. Then you have the rekindled love interest in Greg ( like days after her husband dies.. that was quick) and what's going on with them and then you have the mystery of Bays parentage. Its alot going on and they fact that the parent thing has NOTHING to do with anything just bothers me.

Bay has always thought she was different and now she has found what she thinks is proof that her parents may have been her aunt and Raul. She later finds out that Raul is in fact her father, but her mother had an affair with her sister's fiancé and got pregnant. The sister ended up committing suicide and Raul never knew he had a daughter.
Then end wraps up nicely with learning that it was a guy who was the financial backer of their restaurant who killed Derrick, Jason and Vince. He killed Derrick for the money, Vince saw him do it so he was cleaning that up and Jason knew stuff so he drugged him. There is unnecessary injuries in the end.. Like why did Greg have to "Fall" and dislocate his knee.. that was useless added storyline. All in All, not a bad book but def not my favorite.

This is a murder mystery for readers who like the plot to center more on relationships than the actual mystery and investigation into it. Bay and Greg, a detective focusing on drug cases but also involved in the murder investigation, have a relationship. Bay has a strained relationship with her parents and often siblings as well. Much of the narrative deals with these relationships, almost to the point of the murder mystery taking a back seat.
I did not find the characters engaging. Bay was over reactionary and treated her friend rather poorly at times. She had difficulties with her family and did not seem to be willing to meet them half way. I found I liked her sisters though. Greg was also over reactionary, especially for a man. And I really didn't like the idea of him having a sexual relationship with someone involved in the case, even if no longer a suspect.
There was lots of information in the book about different types of bicycles. The food descriptions made my mouth water. I did find the emphasis on relationships distracting as I prefer a focus more on solving the murder mystery.

This is an enjoyable, methodical and engaging thriller drama which hooks you in and makes you want to find out what happened. Who killed Derek Anderson? Was he really who his wife, Bay, thought he was? Was she involved? And what does this have to do with the drugs being dealt in the town?
Questions that are all asked and then neatly wrapped up by the time you read the last chapter. The story has three distinct strands to it, the main one being the murder investigation and then a sub plot where the main character, Bay Bishop, who after losing her husband/house/business has to return to her family's home and deal with lingering issues with her parents and potential secrets about who she is. Finally, there is the romance sub plot, one of the detective's working her husband's murder case just so happens to be her old high school boyfriend, Greg, who ghosted her years ago and their inconvenient attraction to each other. Will love win out second time around?
I loved the characters in this one who are all distinct and the close knit group which you need in a mystery novel in order to try and work out what has happened. You have Bay, her family, her financial backer, her employers, her solid best friend, Greg, his best friend, the grump police detective who seems to have it in for everyone. They are all very real and help to draw you into the story and keep reading.
The only slight criticism I have with regards to the plot is that the Bay's family sub plot seemed like it didn't really fit or was in fact needed, it proved to be a distraction for me but as I say the characters were engaging enough that I didn't mind it.
The narration for this one is excellent, you can never go wrong with Stella Hunter and Andrew Eiden, who expertly brought this world alive and brought with it the necessary suspense and intrigue to keep you hooked.
The writing style was excellent as well, particularly all the vivid food descriptions, thanks to Bay being a chef and their restaurant being a gourmet place. The first chapter has a description of a menu that will have you salivating but throughout the book it seems everyone is either eating or drinking and it made constantly hungry. There is a cute little picnic scene in the middle of the book and it is a lovely tender moment between the main characters but I got distracted from the delicious descriptions of their charcuterie hamper!
Anyway, this is enjoyable story with a neat elegant story with a hint of suspense but it won't have your brain tied up in knots with loads of twists or Inception like plots like other thrillers (looking at you Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle). I thoroughly urge you to check it out.
I'm eagerly going to check out the author's other works thanks to this.

While this author's writing style is a little hard for me to follow sometimes, the audio really made this a wonderful story. Stella Hunter & Andrew Eiden did a fantastic job of bring life to this mystery/second chance romance. This book is more focused to the mystery aspect, but the second chance romance is sort of a side character.
This story follows the death of Bay's husband, who was found dead in the alley behind their restaurant. While the investigation is ongoing, many secrets come to light regarding the life of her husband. Turns out, he was a man she hardly knew at all. Which was hard for Bay because they had been together for 10 years. One of the detectives on the case is none other than Bay's ex-boyfriend from almost 20 years ago. They didn't end on the best of terms and with Bay being a suspect in her husband's death, their reunion isn't an easy one.
Bay learns many truths during this story, but the one constant is Greg. He is there to help her in any way she will let him. This story kept me guessing right up to the very end which made it even more enjoyable.

I liked the mix of the murder mystery and the mystery of Bay's personal past. Both of these dovetailed nicely into each other, causing tension, conflict, and vulnerabilities.
There's a ton of food porn descriptions in this book, so be careful of reading this when you're hungry. So many great sensory details of not just food but the setting and people and places. I liked the small time location that managed to be more than Americana food like meat and potatoes and hotdogs. Each character had a different relationship to food, and I enjoyed that.
I had some issues with Greg, Bay's childhood sweetheart, who went away to pursue biking and just ghosted her. Literally stopped reading her letters. That was pretty bad behavior and I felt like he got off the hook for that too easily. Yeah, they were kids, but I wouldn't have expected everyone around her to support that relationship, without a whole lot of groveling and more time. But for those who are more forgiving, this might not even be an issue.
This story is great for second-chance romance lovers, foodies, murder-mystery lovers, and those who love an identity mystery!

Things are not always as they seem. Bay Bishop learns the truth behind those words when her husband is killed behind their upscale restaurant. As the police peruse the truth behind his death, more and more secrets come to light. Things Bay never saw. Things that point a finger toward her as a prime suspect. But detective Greg Musgrave, who works with the narcotics team doesn’t believe she’s guilty. Not the Bay he knew in high school. Not the Bay he once loved. Not the Bay he walked away from to pursue a career as a competitive biker. But can he and Bay put aside their differences to find the truth of Derrick’s murder? And closer to home, Bay is finally learning about her own personal story, a story that is a long time coming.
There is a lot of emotion in this story, and Sharon Michalove does a tremendous job of teasing out the facts and keeping the reader guessing. A suspenseful mystery as well as a family drama that will keep the reader on their toes as they try to get the answers to some important questions. Who killed Derrick? And who is Bay Bishop really?

What happens when your husband is murdered? (an audio review)
We always hear the spouse is the number one suspect. So Bay’s obviously on the cop’s radar. But she didn’t do it. And she soon discovers her husband had a whole other life she knew nothing about. As things unfold around her, she has only her best friend and her ex-boyfriend to turn to. Greg’s also a cop, so there’s that layer of complication.
Also, Bay has her family to contend with. As someone with a contentious relationship with her own kin, I felt tremendous empathy. When Bay discovers the ultimate secret, things truly go sideways.
The mystery was good, the interpersonal relationships were fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I especially loved the narrators. Stella Hunter was just the perfect Bay and I adored Andrew Eiden as Greg. I’ve enjoyed both of them in the past, and hope to listen to them again in the future. As well as more stories from Ms. Michalove. Can’t wait.
We always hear the spouse is the number one suspect. So Bay’s obviously on the cop’s radar. But she didn’t do it. And she soon discovers her husband had a whole other life she knew nothing about. As things unfold around her, she has only her best friend and her ex-boyfriend to turn to. Greg’s also a cop, so there’s that layer of complication.
Also, Bay has her family to contend with. As someone with a contentious relationship with her own kin, I felt tremendous empathy. When Bay discovers the ultimate secret, things truly go sideways.
The mystery was good, the interpersonal relationships were fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I especially loved the narrators. Stella Hunter was just the perfect Bay and I adored Andrew Eiden as Greg. I’ve enjoyed both of them in the past, and hope to listen to them again in the future. As well as more stories from Ms. Michalove. Can’t wait.

Dead in the Alley is a romantic suspense that opens with Bay's husband being brutally murdered. Greg is the blast from her past who is assigned to help figure out who killed him. I would probably call this more of a cozy mystery than a romantic suspense. I enjoyed the mystery part of the book. I thought I had the culprit figured out, but I was wrong in the end. I did figure out the other msytery regarding Bay's heritage though. For me, that was the best part of the book.
The romance for me just didn't work. I know it was a second chance romance, but I didn't feel any chemistry between the couple. The book also suffers from the length. It was way too long. There was a lot of unnecessary filler that could have been left out. I do think it's worth giving it a try. If you like cozy mysteries, then you will probably enjoy this one.

August 30, 2022This book is unique and engaging from start to finish. I love the mystery, romance, and suspense built into this story. The story takes place in Michigan and the descriptions are so vivid, I felt like I was there. Being from the Midwest, I always love reading books from places I'm familiar with. The characters are brilliantly written and relatable. I appreciated the backstory and am a huge fan of family dramas. I also learned a good bit about bike racing and enjoyed that aspect. I found myself reading late into the night because I had to know who did it. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author!

~*~ Audiobook Review ~*~ This mystery engaged me right away with the carefully placed clues throughout the story. As plot lines unfurl more potential suspects are revealed and new mysteries further complicate the problems Bay must face. Her world has imploded, not the least of which is the boy who broke her heart is now back in the picture. This adds fuel to the dumpster fire. She has no choice but to give up or find her strength and move forward. This is more subtle than in-your-face thriller. Solid 4 stars, really enjoyed the mystery!
Stella Hunter and Andrew Eiden are wonderful performers! They did a wonderful job with all of the complex characters, from the corrupt to the broken to the women in survival mode and men trying to build a business and make up for mistakes. I loved every moment of their narration! 5-star performances, always!

Romantic suspense writer Sharon Michalove delivers an emotional, satisfying women’s fiction novel that gets its spark by starting with the murder of character Bay Bishop’s unscrupulous husband. The novel focuses on the growing relationship between the detective and Bay; the murder mystery—which is solid—might feel incidental for some readers. The novel is told from two points of view. Detective Greg Musgrave investigates the murder in his own chapters but his real focus is on rekindling his relationship with former sweetheart Bay Bishop while also searching for meaning in his life. Bay Bishop’s chapters focus on her finding meaning in life, too, while struggling with family secrets and whether or not to get back together with an old flame. The story also offers interesting details about food, wine, Michigan, and professional bicycling.

Excellently Crafted
I gasped. I grinned. It was excellent. I loved the characters and it was a BookTok recommendation that I'm thrilled to have found. I could picture the scenery, feel the crisp autumn air, and imagine myself there. The reason I deducted a star is because many readers are going to need a dictionary for some of the word choices and those choices weren't necessary. That breaks up the magic of the story. It doesn't take very many of them before you lose the reader and this book has enough that it definitely runs the risk. As there were better word choices available, I wonder why the author chose the ones she did. Reader be warned and keep in mind, if you have to look anything up it isn't a reflection on you but on the author.

A second chance love that has been rekindled after Bay's husband is brutally murdered.
The narrators, Andrew Eiden and Stella Hunter were fantastic. I really enjoyed the duo narrated audiobook. I felt like both narrators portrayed the characters very well. Their voices are very engaging and I was hooked from the beginning.
It's very clear to the listener that the feelings between Bay and Greg were still there. There's a bit of history between the two. While there's not a lot of time between the mourning period and when Bay's feelings begin to appear, I think that what Bay discovers about her husband may have helped her move on.

Opens with a pow! When Bay's husband and business partner is run over by a motorcycle, his secrets begin spilling out. It's just the tip of the iceberg for Bay, who never suspected her husband's dark side. As the mystery progresses and we meet Greg, the detective overseeing his murder, we learn that even in the face of murder, love can bloom again. I truly enjoyed these characters and Michalove's delicious, expressive prose.
