Rate this book
Welcome to Cider Hollow, where the pies are magic and the people are disappearing.

Pie witch Reese is living her running the bakery she’s always wanted, selling magical pies, and landing a date with handsome Prince Forrest of the Autumn Court. But people around her start vanishing, returning hours or days later with no memory of their missing time.

When her delivery boy is the next victim, Reese sets aside her pies, determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. But her prince is just as determined to keep her out of harm’s way, keeping her in the dark, and even pushing her out of his own investigation.

But the disappearances accelerate, hitting closer to home and leaving her with little choice but to get involved.

Can Reese bake up a plan to save the town? Or will she be the next to disappear?

I was bored, so I quit. This is more cozy then mystery and I have come to the conclusion that such stories just aren’t my jam.

Still a well written book and cute story for those who like cozy mysteries and want a magical flare as well, but it’s sadly just not for me.

This is ADORABLE!!!! Seriously! The covers look like Autumn blew up on them, and that's exactly what this book is like, but in the best possible way!

The main character runs a small town pie business...and also happens to be a witch dating the prince of the Autumn Court. So many small town hi-jinks with people missing, sprites running around causing trouble, relationship troubles, and quirky best friends. If you are looking for a sweet, fall-themed, Hallmark-style urban fantasy, then this book is exactly what you're looking for. Grab your pumpkin spice coffee (or hot chocolate or whatever) and curl up with this book!

I'm going to read book 2 before I get too in the weeds, but in short: this book is basic. Like a PSL. Like a grilled cheese sandwich. It's almost entirely fluff. But I, too, am basic, and I really needed some light reading. Also, I'm a ho for fall vibes. This is pretty different from my usual reads (it's neither socially conscious in focus, nor queer *le gasp!*) but it's pretty darn adorable.

I didn't realize that there's a novella that come before this book, which might have helped provide some context for Reese and Forrest's relationship. Even without that, I didn't feel particularly lost, though. Overall, this story felt like a cute pilot episode, and it picked up more in the second half as Reese starts to learn more about the world of her Fae neighbors. It's fairly silly, and I don't like Forrest all that much yet, but it seems like we'll be seeing more of his world as Reese gets more involved with the Fae realms.

I picked this series up from the Cozy the Day Away sale, and it's exactly what it says on the tin. So if you like pie and cozy fantasy mysteries, pull up a chair and get reading.

Perhaps I got my hopes up reading the other reviews. This was only okay, and I feel no need to continue the story. So much happened before the book started that affected the story, that it almost had a "2nd in the series" vibe. Because of this, I felt dropped into the middle of the story, rather than the beginning.

The main character was okay, but I didn't understand much of what drove her, and everything was very light and not well flushed out. I did not dislike it, per se, just have no inclination to continue the story, despite it not being over.

This is such a fun series! Who wouldn’t love a pie baked with magic that would make you happy and bring back fond memories of growing up! Reese is a witch with that affinity to infuse those feelings into the pies she makes and I for one would love to taste one! I think I’d become her fourth steady customer but with business picking up for her now I may not be able to get a fresh pie fix on a daily basis without calling ahead now!

There are people disappearing for a day and then reappearing but with no memory of what happened during that missing time. Reese and her bestie Maple do some sleuthing but when Maple disappears Reese is determined to find her friend and bring her back!

I recommend this book for young and old who enjoy a clean cozy that will introduce you to witch and Fae alike who you wouldn’t mind calling them friends yourself!

This series is just getting started so why not get on the ground floor with me so you can read about the exploits of Reese, Maple, the Fae prince and other Fae creatures who make sure Reese never has a dull moment anymore!

The reason behind these disappearances will be a surprise to you I’m sure as it was to me but in a magically setting anything is possible!

This series is just one that you can settle in and get comfortable with as the main characters will soon be your friends as well and when that happens well it’s easy then to want to read more about their new adventures!

What a wonderful world it would be if people all over the world were able to get a magical boost of goodness daily that just may stop them from selfish and hurtful acts towards others! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to not read or hear bad news anymore but only good! Alas it isn’t possible but in our own area of influence we can be that way to others even if we don’t have a extra boost from a magical pie!

I applaud this series and can’t wait for the next book to see what “pie-jinks” Reese, Maple and the prince find themselves in next! Come along with me and enjoy the fun for you are going to love this series just as much as I do I can assure you!

So, I shouldn't have pushed off reading this book as long as I did (and I'm going to have to buy the rest of the books in the series soon just so I can get more of Reese and Forrest). Hands down, this is one of the best books by Selina I've read. Not only did it have me on the edge of my seat (especially the last few chapters), but her description of the small town of Cider Hollow made me feel like I was at home again. Specifically, the night of the high school football game which took me back to my own time in high school, though I was in the stand with the marching band watching while all the other students walked laps upon laps around the track that surrounded our old football field.

In all seriousness, though, I did really enjoy this book and I'm glad Reese and Forrest finally got their coffee date at the end! Here's to more adventures with this lovely couple!

This is another story from a box set I have and I liked the writing at once, its quirkiness appealing to me. It’s set in a supernatural town where witches and other beings live. Reese is a witch who owns a pie shop – each made with a touch of magic.

I liked Reese and her ‘odd’ way of living, which included sprites and a best half-fae friend, Maple – I loved the unique quality of the story.

There’s romance and mystery and many things in between.

Very enjoyable; if only the first part of the trilogy.

Recommended.

This is a really cute, sweet cozy mystery type story featuring all kinds of fae and pie. Lots and lots of pie. I found myself wishing for some of the recipes. My one complaint is the main character. She was a little too oblivious and self contained for my liking. That is part of the plot, though, so I have hope that she will experience some character growth in later books. I really like the budding relationship with Forrest. I enjoyed this read, it was a nice, frothy break.

This was fine? I like the setting and the pie-making, but the main character is kind of annoying in the way that she's insecure when makes bad decisions investigating.

This was exactly what I expected it to be and wanted it to be. It was cheesy, horrible plot, shallow romance, but super cozy.

I don’t even know how to rate it because honestly, for what it advertises to be, it’s perfect. Clean romance, simple plot, delicious descriptions of food and a quaint town.

But also, such a bad plot haha. It reads like something I wrote in middle school. Come to think of it, middle school me would have freakin loved this.

After reading the Prequel Pumpkin Spice Pie-Jinks I dived right into the first book in the series. Vanilla Bean Vampire was a great read, I liked reading more about Reese and following her as she runs her bakery and gets involved in solving the mystery of people who disappear. I thinks it's important to read the prequel first as that establishes a lot of the setting and characters and even how the couple meets.

Reese is still working hard at her bakery and I liked reading about her business and baking pies. The magical element is a nice touch too. The two sprites are friends now and her friend Maple is present as well. She's starting to date Forest the fae prince who is trying to establish a court next to town. It's a fun read with an autumn theme, plenty of pies and magic as well as a bit of mystery.

The mystery plot line about the disappearing villagers is a bit slow to start with more focus on Reese and her business at first. When Luke, Reese's delivery boy disappears the mystery takes a bigger role as Reese gets involved. I like how Reese wanted to help and figure out what was happening. I was not a fan of how Forrest kept pushing her away and hiding things for her even though he had a point it was dangerous, I rather he was more open about everything so she understood better, but they are still in the beginning stages of their romance. I liked how the mystery plot line got resolved and the way the hints all coalesced into a whole. It all made sense and I liked the conclusion to it.

I like reading about Reese and her bakery, she's a nice main character. It could be a bit stressful to read about her bakery as she runs into some problems and she works really hard and still struggles when orders start to pile up before she implements some things to get on top of things. I liked seeing how she handled things and it felt realistic. The pie witch thing is cool and especially some pies she baked late in the book were interesting additions as well as a scene where we see how she makes her potions.

I had a few minor things that didn't quite work for me. Like how Reese was a bit too hard on herself at times and even Maple agreeing she was a bad friend. I thought it made sense how Reese had focused on the bakery for a while now as this was her lifelong dream and it bothered me that Maple blamed Reese for not asking when she also could've told Reese what was going on. I never fully warmed up to their friendship, but it was clear they cared for one another.

The romance is mostly a side plot line and didn't really progress much till later in the book. I liked how Reese and Forrest have an instant connection, but I want to see them actually spending time with each other and getting to know each other. Reese really feels it's serious and how Forrest really sees her, but they hardly spend any time together and I didn't really feel that depth of feelings yet. I hope in the next book we see more of them together. I understood why Forest kept her at arms length and was vague about what was going on, but I hope after what happened in this book he decides to not do that going forward.

To summarize: Vanilla Bean Vampire is a fun and cozy fantasy read set during autumn. I enjoyed reading this one. Reese is a nice main character and I like reading about her bakery and her pies, the whole pie witch thing is fun to read about. The mystery plot line is a bit slow to start, but ramps up later when Reese her delivery boy goes missing and she tries to figure out what's going on. I liked how everything ties together and all the hints play a role in the conclusion. I would've liked to see more of the romance, as the two don't spend a lot of time together in this book. It made sense why Forest didn't want Reese involved, but I wished he had trusted her more and explained more. I look forward to the next book.

I'm finally getting to this one and found it rather adorable!

POV: First person
POV Character: Reese
Verb Tense: Past
Trigger Warnings: Disappearances/kidnappings, memory loss, short battle scene
Spice Level: low, mostly romantic leanings without any real kisses

This book technically has a prequel novella that tells the story of how pie witch Reese met the new fae prince in town, Forrest, and I'll eventually read that one but wanted to just jump into this one and am glad I did!

Reese lives in Cider Hollow, which is a small town that's apparently totally walkable and one the edge of a sprawling forest. Recently a fae prince purchased the bulk of a piece of forest that lies directly behind her little cottage and is in the process of turning it into his demesne by getting to know the town and people there and becoming the fae benefactor for those fae who live in the area.

As a result, things are a little wonky in town. Cider Hollow has its share of magical residents, but not everyone has always been welcoming to the fae. Reese, too, has learned the tales of the fae from her grandmother, whose warnings echo in her ears as she works towards making her little pie baking business viable and enlisting both human and fae merchants under contracts as suppliers. She's been very busy trying to get the business up and running, and it's only when her mother speculates on something odd happening with her book club that Reese begins to realize all might not be well in town.

Her mother, also a witch, has a weekly book club she runs with her church ladies, and lately they've had several members absent from the weekly meetings. Not entirely strange, Reese remarks, but the problem is when the members return they can't remember anything from the time when they disappeared.

While the disappearances are happening, however, Reese is also trying to manage a sudden bump in her business and dealing with some adorable sprites who come to visit her frequently and don't always make with the magic--in fact, they prefer to make with the mischief. The business is booming, and she's also trying to actually get on a date with the new fae prince from the autumn court, Forrest, after he promised her a coffee date.

But things keep coming up to keep Forrest busy, Reese keeps having to manage more and more orders, and people in town continue to disappear, even including her delivery boy.

I like Reese. Her character's so fun, and she develops quite a bit of boldness in this story, coming to terms with her own failings as a friend and diving into the deep end of a mystery that might be bigger than herself. Forrest didn't get quite as much development as Reese, but they do have to navigate the beginnings of this relationship between a human witch and a fae prince and have a bit of an argument over what that should look like. Forrest does grow and begin to trust Reese more, which I liked.

I also loved the other characters, too. Reese's mother is a hoot, her best friend Maple is an interesting character who's got her own issues being a half-fae, the sprites Oak and Cardamom are delightfully mischievous, and Thea the hob is a no-nonsense kind of fae I find fascinating.

The story hinges around the mysterious disappearances in town, and I kind of love the cozy mystery vibes in this. I loved how the clues were littered throughout and it was clear what was causing some of the disappearances early on, but there were some twists that kept me engaged and the eventual reveal of what was causing the disappearances was good.

It's a cute and fast read. I honestly read it in a day, and it was fun and lighthearted and hit all the cozy fantasy and mystery vibes with a low fantasy kind of world.

description

Vanilla Bean Vampire is about a witch discovering herself and, at the same time, trying to solve the mystery of the townspeople disappearing. The writing is from a first-person POV - Reese, as she manages a growing business, being more outgoing, and solving a mystery while trying to date a fae prince of Cider Hollow. The story's pace is consistent with some slower sections but speeds up during the suspenseful parts. I enjoyed a few places in the book, like (1) the extricate baking scenes, which give a gastronomical escape, and (2) the action-packed ending with Reese trying out her special potions. The story is easy to follow, but the clues are many and elusive until the ending explains everything. It is a good, clean, and fun read.

Reese, the female protagonist, grows throughout the book after discovering more of herself and how others see her. After being buried in her pie business, Pie-Jinks, Reese starts opening herself up socially to learn about the people around her town after a devastating/traumatic break-up. She learns the many supernatural beings making up the town and makes friends with them - understanding their way of life and themselves. On top of this, Reece dating a Fae prince adds more complex relationship issues. She had so much self-doubt in her abilities as a baker, witch, and friend. Her family and friends understood her personality, but it was heartbreaking at times. She does grow stronger after spending more time with people who encourage her and later would be in trouble - then it would be Reese's time to "fight" for them.

Overall, Vanilla Bean Vampire is one seriously delicious mystery book that will make readers hungry for pie while solving a mystery. It has a good amount of suspense, angst, drama, and humor without going overboard. I recommend this read for readers who are baking/cooking/foodie fanatics, clean-romance readers, and cozy mystery buffs. The story and characters are wholesome enough without being too sugar-coated (pun pun pun intended), which will instead entice and captivate readers to want to finish the book immediately. Although this book may not be what I usually choose for myself, more readers will thoroughly enjoy this. I liked how the mystery was solved - though it leaves room for more sinister things going on in Reese's town. I like how the author bridges this story to the next of the series.

I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Reese has a lot going on in her life these days. She's a pie-witch who just managed to open her own bakery where she sells magic pies. As she struggles to manage the workload, she learns other people in town have been disappearing and then reappearing the next day with no memory of what happened to them. She also scored a date with Prince Forrest of the Autumn Court. Things get even crazier when her delivery boy goes missing and Forrest begins keeping secrets about his investigation from her. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Reese begins her own investigation, all while managing her business. Sounds easy as pie, right?

I really enjoyed this book! First of all, the descriptions of the pies were amazing! I really enjoyed the baking scenes and how the magic worked! And all the fall vibes made me so happy! I wanted to go visit Cider Hollow, try a pie, stop in the lovely bookstore, and participate in the town bonfire!

Reese is a pretty relatable character. I love the magic of her hair (though I wouldn't want to live with that!) She just tries to do the best she can, and she ends up biting off more than she can chew. I liked her character growth as the story progressed!

I also liked the side characters: the trouble-making sprites, the helpful hob, and Reese's half-fae best friend! These characters really added to the story!

I will admit that I have not quite warmed up to Forrest yet. I suspect that would be different if I read the prequel novella! In this book, he mostly just frustrated me, though he did have his good moments. I'm hoping that I enjoy his character more in the next book!

I'm not sure if this is classified as a cozy mystery, but that's the vibe I got from it! I thought the story overall was charming and cute! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a YA romance with fae, a lovely small town in autumn, and a cozy mystery.

Vanilla Bean Vampire is the first book in the Pie-Jinx series, an cozy urban fantasy/cozy mystery.

It feels similar to the Hallmark Good Witch movies.

The main character Reese is a pie witch. This means that she bakes her potions into pies. She owns Pie-Jinx, the bakery she runs out of her kitchen. She also has many amusing quirks, such as her hair that changes color to match her emotions.

I loved getting to know her home town of Cider Hollow. It's a typical small town where everyone knows everyone else.

There is a Fae court right outside of town. Right in Reese's backyard. She has a maybe relationship with the charming Fae prince who presides over it.

This story was so cute. I loved the fall atmosphere and the mystery was well seeded throughout the every day goings on. The romance was just right to be sweet but not overshadow the supernatural mystery part of the story.

Vanilla Bean Vampire is such an enjoyable read! Building on the world and characters that were introduced in Pumpkin Spice Pie Jinks, this makes a great first entry into a new series. The characters are well-rounded, relatable, and especially likeable; they clearly show growth throughout the book, and I look forward to seeing where they go from here. The fantasy world is super fun and pulls you into right its mythology and small-town antics, where Fae, vampires, and humans mix. Reese's baking adds a whole new layer to fantasy, where you can lose yourself in her baking as she does. The mystery of where disappearing townsfolk are going and why they don't remember what happened pulls you in as you root for Reese to put together all the clues and help stop the disappearances. The ending certainly leaves you excited for the next entry, with a clear lead-in. I look forward to seeing where this world and series goes next, and to reading more about the Reese, Maple, Forrest, and the sprites!

In a community where supernaturals and humans mix, more than a bit of chaos reigns.

A fae prince and his people are a new addition. It seems likely that a variety of supes might have been mixing in the population for some time.

Reese is a pie witch - a baking witch with an obvious specialty. She is culinary school trained, and has a collection of family recipes and spells.

Her new business venture, Pie Jinks, has pretty much taken over her world - except for a crush on the fae prince, and a few good friends who try to encourage her to spend more time doing pretty much anything else.

Skills and challenges present themselves, alongside some bumps in her efforts to get to know the prince better. Court business is invasive and often annoying- and why does the charming prince Forrsst underestimate the skills and abilities of the young witch?

Troubles and joys are best faced when shared - and there are some wacky challenges!

A fun and colorful world if enticing adventures- and a family with witches with yummy talents!

School starting, pumpkin spice is brewing at the coffee shops, and we are just waiting for that first crisp autumn morning to arrive. Vanilla Bean Vampire is the perfect way to enjoy this time of year. It's a nice light read, with lots of baking, especially of pies, wonderful fae and vampire characters, and of course, our leading hair-changing color fae baker Reese. Reese has attracted the attention of the handsome fae prince forest who is looking to establish his court near cider hollow. Reese recently opened a pie shop, and her business is booming, but several people go missing with no memory of what happened. It is time to unravel the clues while baking some delicious pies and maybe falling in love with Forest. I thoroughly enjoyed every wonderful pie baking moment in this story, and there is just something about baking and a mystery to solve that go so well together.

It was...well...cute.

It read kind of young, almost like the main character was early high school but she lived on her own so I assume she was maybe in her 20s. Kind of easy to figure a lot of it out & the "whodunit". But I guess the "why?" Needed to be answered but at the same time, you kind of had an idea of the why. It's worth listening to /reading if you need something quick and not too thought provoking. Just something to pass the time until you figure out what else you want to read or you're waiting on your books to get to you or holds at the library. It's really not a bad book, some may actually love it & I hope you do love it if you decide to read it. It just wasn't a favorite for me. Not sure if I will go on to the next one or not. I guess we will see what happens.. I did like the narrator as well.

This was a cute and cozy read. Reminded me of a Hallmark movie, but with a lot more fantasy in it, so way better than a Hallmark movie!

Reese is an adorable heroine, and I loved watching her story arc as she struggles to manage her growing business and comes to realize that she's been a little oblivious to the people around her and needs to be a better friend. I also enjoyed how courage played a big part in this story and how she eventually had to use her baking skills to go on an adventure and do some heroic stuff (intentional vagueness there because: spoilers) but I just loved how she stayed herself, and didn't suddenly become this amazing superhero... she used the strengths she had.

I really enjoyed this cozy fantasy about Reese, a pie baking witch who has just started a bakery from her home. There’s a cute cast of characters, some fairly low stakes high jinks, and a sweet, clean romance.

In this story, the Fae are moving into town starting a new court under Prince Forest. There’s a mystery involving some missing people and people missing memories as the two main characters try to get together for a first date. I enjoyed the inclusion of different types of magic and a variety of supernatural creatures and the small town Fall setting. The author does an excellent job with the narration.

If you are looking for cozy with a side of mystery this is definitely for you!

Don’t get me wrong, I think the vibes of the book are perfect autumn and cozy, but the story itself could use some heavy work.

For one, Forrest and Reese have ZERO chemistry. Forrest is actually an a-hole the entire time and Reese is like: OMG we are perfect for each other. It truly makes no sense and I am sure that the second Forrest had to do something for the court he would break up with her and not shed a single tear.

I will, however, continue to read these if only for the Fall vibes I’m craving this season.

I enjoyed this mystery story with all the characters that were within. The main character was Reese.

Reese is pie witch, she runs her own bakery. She wants to go on a date with the prince but he has been busy. There are people vanishing around town, and Reese wants to know why, too.

This was a fun story to read. It had action, adventure, and suspense throughout. It had quite a bit of giggles within. It was fun trying to solve the mystery within. This is the first in this series.

I received a complimentary copy via Story Original. This is my honest, unbiased opinion.

I thought this sounded like an interesting book, so I gave it a try. It is a very cute, well-written book. Reese is an adorable pie witch who is going on a date with the new prince in town, but people keep disappearing throwing a kink in their plans. When Reese’s business is affected, she knows she has to help get to the bottom of what’s going on especially when she suspects Forrest is keeping what else is happening from her. This was a clean, wholesome cozy paranormal with lots of interesting hijinks. It was almost too sweet (ha!) for me, but I would read another to find out because I did enjoy it quite a bit. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Loved this story. Totally interesting storyline with unique characters. Reese and Forrest keep missing connecting for their date, but don't give up trying. Melody is Reese's best friend and part fae. Weird things start happening around town and Reese won't stop until she gets to the bottom of what's going on. Loved the sprites. I can't wait for the next one.

It seems to be a wonderful start to a new series and I look forward to the next Pie-Jinx tale.

Book one of a cozy mystery series that has a bakery, pies, witches, fae , football, and flowers. A fun lighthearted visit to a town filled with humans and fae that mix together in regular small town activities. A quick, fun read for those times when you just want to escape the "real" world and relax with an "enchanting " read.
