The End and Then: Loveless, Book 1

Rate this book
What do you do when life as you know it ends?

Eden Ross is trying to figure that out.

She starts by packing up the remains of her life and moving to a small town in Colorado to run a bar alongside her best friend. But the work still doesn't provide a sufficient distraction from the demons nipping at her heels. Estranged from the family she loves, she tries to focus on her new, tight-knit group of surprisingly accepting neighbors. That includes Chase Taylor, a charismatic outdoorsman she fails to keep at a distance despite her best intentions. But letting anyone get too close carries the possibility of them finding out her ugly truth, and that's a risk Eden's not willing to take.

When a revelation from an unexpected source rocks her to her core, she's forced to make a decision that will change the course of her life. Faced with this impossible choice between her family and her well-being, she knows she needs help, and the only way to get it is to tell the truth about what has happened, so she can finally leave the past behind once and for all.

In her debut novel, Hannah Bird deftly explores what it truly means to be a family, and whether those ties that bind us all can—or should—ever be broken.

Follow Eden on her journey to discover the goodness of life and love after tragedy, and the importance of those that support us along the way.

Well, this is my book! I’d like to take a moment to thank you for taking a chance on a brand new author. I hope you always get a ninth chicken nugget at Chick-Fil-A when you order an eight piece. You deserve it.

I wrote The End and Then because I wanted every person in the world who has known tragedy (which is most of us, right?) to hear this message: there is goodness still to come, just up ahead, waiting for you to arrive. Even when it feels like the end. Especially then.

So I give this story a humble five star umbrella to shelter it as it steps out into the wind and the rain. And I give you my love, all who read this book, as you seek your own HEA.

I will list content warnings below for those who may need them. These do contain some spoilers. Wishing everyone a safe reading experience🤍

Content Warnings: mistreatment by a parent, toxic mother relationship, step-parent sexual abuse, mentions of child pornography sexual assault and trauma, depression, PTSD, panic attacks, mentions of alcohol, on page sexual content, mentions of religious trauma and pastoral misconduct

Eden Ross chce uciec.

Okay, I’m calling it. Hannah Bird is going to become a lot of reader’s new favorite romance author. This book was devastating and beautiful and had me hooked from page one.

What I loved most:
• CHASE TAYLOR. New book boyfriend alert! This man is just dreamy. I love him so much.
• Eden’s relationship with her therapist. I don’t know why, and he was such a small character in the grand scheme of the book, but I just really liked him. He was so patient and asked Eden all the right questions. I like that Hannah included those interactions in the book.
• Found family aspect. Zoey and Eden’s bond was so strong but Eden also found other people she became close to when she moved to Colorado.
• There is a bit of a mystery about what happened to Eden to make her pick up and move across the country. That mystery keeps you turning the pages to find out.
• I was a big fan of how certain relationships ended up growing and changing by the end of the book and I was highly satisfied by one in particular but it’s a bit of a spoiler so I’m being vague.
• There were a few scenes that made me laugh out loud.

Finally, there are some content warnings so please check those before reading.

This is a beautifully written debut and I cannot wait to see what Hannah puts out next.

The End and Then by Hannah Bird

I didn’t love it, I didn’t hate it. This isn’t a love story so much as a story of trauma recovery, letting go and finding a way forward. While I think the intent and story was good, the romantic relationship seemed fast, almost unnecessarily so. Chase was completely infatuated with the new arrival based on… nothing really, and then was just wrapped into the story of her grief and wanting to protect her. There was very mild spice attempted, but really it was unnecessary… and the “I love you”s we’re almost absurdly abrupt for me. Between that and the build to the MC’s relationship with her mother, it all seemed a little… terse and blunt from a storyline perspective. I think the characters would have benefited from a bit more time and development. There’s a lot to unpack in a short book. Overall, messages were good…it was a fast read, but not one of my favorites. #unpopularopinion

It felt like we went right into the story. Girl meets guy right away. And then it kind of… slowed down? I think the author was trying to build tension in doing so — both with present day and with the therapy flashbacks. However, this just threw off the pacing for me.

The style of writing was interesting to me but I’m not sure I loved it. Some of the phrasing seemed dated (“People will make assumptions!” about a piggy back ride when your ankle is hurt? “‘Would it be totally inappropriate if I planted one on you right now?’” Do people say things like that in this decade?) and the conversations between characters didn’t feel authentic. This made it difficult for me to find the relationship between Eden and Chase believable.

It also drove me nuts that they didn’t really communicate? How were they SO into each other when they couldn’t finish a single conversation, for goodness’ sake?? Why was the dialogue so choppy??

Also, why is everyone pinching everyone affectionately? Chase, Rose, etc… so much pinching.

Something seemingly ridiculous that bothered me: Eden never thanks Chase for the new hiking boots he springs on her and that’s just plain rude. To me there were moments like this where, again, it felt like the author just didn’t want to finish writing a whole conversation?

This book felt like the author couldn’t decide between writing a trauma recovery book or a romance and thus wasn’t really effective in doing so. I did very much like that therapy was such a big part of Eden’s recovery journey. I almost wish the romantic aspect had been left out entirely and we could have focused on Eden’s recovery rather than the forced and sometimes absurd interactions she had with Chase.

Overall, it was a good story with potential but just didn’t achieve the depth it intended for me and the writing didn’t resonate.

This was such a beautiful story. The book follows Eden’s journey of healing and working through trauma. Everything is so raw and real. Eden is such a strong FMC and I was cheering her along throughout the whole book. I felt like this was Eden’s love story to herself, one of finding her strength to pick up the pieces and find her way forward. Woven in Eden’s story was that of her and Chase. I absolutely loved Chase and honestly wish I would have seen more of their relationship. However, I can appreciate that this was primarily about Eden’s journey. This was a deeply emotional and powerful book that was beautifully written. Definitely recommend checking this one out! Hannah has easily become one of my favorite authors 🩵

This book. It is raw, real, and honestly amazing. It was written beautifully.

We get to follow Eden on her healing journey and all the little things along the way. She is a strong MFC and admirable. For everything this girl has gone through to still see the light after everything is just beautiful.

Chase Taylor is also the ultimate book boyfriend.

This book touched a piece of my soul and I will forever be grateful.

This is a beautiful trauma recovery book but a romance it was not.

What I loved about this book was the growth of Eden and the support she found in a family that she chose rather than one she was given. The representation of therapy and setting boundaries were things I was so glad to see. This is what stuck out and resonated with me and were the things I chose to focus on while reading.

I enjoyed Chase as a character and his patience and kindness toward Eden was sweet. Zoey was a fun secondary character and I'm really looking forward to reading her story! Gary, everyone needs a Gary in their life.

A small town story of heartbreak and the journey of healing.

The BEST thing about this book though ... 🍋

This was definitely a case of Bookstagram made me do it but I'm not a bit sorry about it. The end and then is a beautiful and heartbreaking indie romance debut about Eden, a young woman recovering from a shocking trauma and trying to pick up the pieces of her life.

New to Loveless, Colorado, Eden moves in with her best friend Zoey and starts working at her bar. There she meets Chase, a man who can't help being intrigued with sad-eyed Eden. Slowly we learn what happened in Eden's past as she works through her issues with a therapist and learns to open up and trust in a future with Chase.

Full of found family, great mental health and therapy rep and a sweet, slow burn romance. This was highly bingeable and recommended for fans of Colleen Hoover. I'll be first in line to read Zoey's story next when it comes out later this year!

What a beautifully written book! I cannot believe this is a debut! Hannah did such a wonderful job taking us through Eden’s story and showing us the raw emotions that come along with the aftermath of a trauma. I found it so inspiring to read as the character progressed through the stages of shock/processing {and then} how she persevered along with all of the support from the people who loved her. There are many valuable lessons tucked into this book; please go give it a read!! (Plus, Chase is the sweetest guy ever to Eden, and I completely fell in love with him too.)

First of all, a HUGE thank you to Hannah for the privilege of getting an ARC copy of her phenomenal debut novel.
Oof, where to begin…The End and Then had me in a page turning, chokehold start to finish. It tells such an achingly beautiful story of healing through the main character Eden. Hannah has written a vivid and lively main character that is so deeply relatable from her interactions with other characters to her internal monologue. Even the side characters are all impeccably fleshed out. Whether they get a brief introduction or are in multiple chapters, you feel like you know them. And don’t even get me started on Chase because I’d need a cold glass of water (or lemonade if you know you know ;) ) Let’s just say if the perfect man existed Chase would be him.
All in all, I can’t recommend this book enough and plan to tell everyone I know to add it to their 2023 TBR.

A strong 2.5 really. I really didn’t like the writing as it was super cheesy e.g. “There was an elephant in the room but luckily Zoey is a zoo-keeper”. There are a million sentences like that.

I received this beautiful book from Hannah Bird as a physical ARC copy - so a million thank you’s to her.

This book was beautifully written. It covers the trauma that Eden escapes from, and how she’s working through it with her therapist (and it’s done in such a beautiful light and takes mental illness and struggles seriously) and it’s just *chefs kiss*.

Eden moves to a small town in Colorado to follow her best friend and help her run a bar she bought as a way to escape her old life and to recenter herself. She’s trying to move forward and do the most for herself, and enter Chase. The handsome, small business owner right next door to the bar - who happens to really be the breath of fresh air that Eden needs. She just doesn’t know how to let him in and it’s just so… authentic.

Hannah really showcases that family doesn’t necessarily have to be blood, but people who love you through the thick and thin. AND, don’t get me started on the amazing side characters. The character growth, the adorable quirks of the side characters, the story… just perfection and I cannot scream enough praises.

Read if you love:
🍋 Strangers to lovers trope
🍋 Small town vibes
🍋 Slow Burn
🍋 Friendship and newfound family
🍋 Journey through trauma

My first book by Hannah Bird and it certainly won’t be the last. Congratulations on your debut novel!

This book had all the feelings in it! Eden is starting over when she decides to move in with her best friend, Zoe, in Colorado after traumatic events. We don’t learn what she’s been through yet and as a reader, you get to uncover little by little her trauma through each of her therapy sessions. I felt that not knowing helped me feel all her frustrations which added to how I perceived the therapy sessions too. I really enjoyed her journey of growth through each of them.

The romantic aspect of this book was great. It was a slow burn with some spice sprinkled in. Chase was everything you can hope for in a male character. He was sweet, patient, adventurous, fun, and understanding. He gave Eden the space she needed and I loved him for that!

Zoe was also a favorite character for me. As her best friend, she made it possible for Eden to start over, and to have a trusted shoulder to fall back on.

As for the trauma of this book, I don’t want to give spoilers by mentioning what it was. It would take away from the experience I had as I read through her sessions. But please do look up the trigger warnings if there is something that would impact your reading. I was very saddened by the outcome of Eden and her mom’s relationship. It broke my heart but also made me feel so proud for Eden taking the first step into creating strong boundaries for her mental health.

All in all, if you come to this book looking for romance, you will find it. However, my biggest takeaway from this novel is how you overcome trauma with the support of a newfound family of love and friendship.

Highly recommend it and looking forward to Hannah’s next book!

**Thank you to the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.**

„The end and then” to jedna, kilkugodzinna sesja psychoterapii w domowym zaciszu w formie obyczajówki.

*ARC reader*

I cannot comprehend that this is a debut novel. This book had EVERYTHING I look for in a romance book. I will give a little run down of it below:

⭐️ I love emotional books that have a lot of depth to it and this book gave this and more. I think it was so important that we built up to introducing what trauma Eden had gone through.

⭐️ I think the way the book presented trauma was really accurate. I absolutely loved seeing the relationship between Eden and her therapist. Eden goes through a lot of work to be able to trust someone again, and try to make her new town a home.

⭐️ The side characters were amazing (particularly Zoey, Gary and Rose) and I loved how much they were involved in the story. I think it shows the importance of who you surround yourself with and the presence of a really good friendship!

⭐️ Eden and Chase. I have no words. I loved both of the main characters the same which doesn’t tend to happen often for me. Chase Taylor has my full heart - He helps Eden in so many ways but he knows when he shouldn’t push her to do or talk about certain things.

I literally can’t give it any less than 5 stars, the writing was amazing. The characters were brilliant. The story was incredible. I will be shocked if this book doesn’t go viral and if Hannah Bird doesn’t become a big time author - GO READ THIS BOOK (after checking the content warnings!)

First check trigger warning as this book deals with mental health and other issues.

This is a extremely well written book we are following Eden after she has moved across state to Caroldo.

This was both beautiful and heartbreaking in equal measure! Eden relocates to Colorado from Nashville after experiencing something traumatic, but we won't know what until we see her go through some therapy sessions. She relocates near her friend Zoey, who introduces her to Chase. They fall in love right away and get along great, but she isn't in a position to pursue it any further. Pieces of her past begin to emerge as she works her way through healing.

This is not a love story.

At least, that’s not what I took away from it.

Does it feature a male love interest with golden retriever energy? Yes.
Is he patient and understanding and protective and swoon-worthy? Absolutely.

But this story is so much deeper than the romance. It follows a woman named Eden who, after a traumatic revelation, uproots her life to move to a small town in Colorado to help her best friend run a bar and to focus on her healing. It’s about resilience, and the understanding that it’s okay to choose yourself and the love you deserve as opposed to the love we feel obligated to accept.

I loved this debut by Hannah Bird! Her writing style flowed so smoothly, and her attention to detail had me visualizing the Colorado landscape and I swear I could taste Santi’s green chili burgers 🤤

I loved the community of Loveless and how welcoming and supportive of Eden everyone was. So much so that when I found out Hannah’s second book focuses on Zoey’s story, I might have squealed a little in excitement!

This book does deal with trauma so check your trigger warnings, but I appreciated the mental health representation and the healing journey Eden went on through therapy. It added so much more depth to an already fantastic story.

As with almost every book I read, I went into this book completely blind. I had no idea what this book was about but I knew I wanted to read it. I was completely captivated from chapter 1. I could not put it down, friends! Hannah's writing is beautiful and easy to get lost in.

"𝒞𝒽𝒶𝓈𝑒, 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝒸𝒶𝓃'𝓉 𝒻𝒾𝓍 𝓂𝑒." ℋ𝑒 𝓈𝒽𝒶𝓀𝑒𝓈 𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝒽𝑒𝒶𝒹 𝑔𝑒𝓃𝓉𝓁𝓎. "𝒴𝑜𝓊'𝓇𝑒 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝒷𝓇𝑜𝓀𝑒𝓃."

When I tell you that Chase was everything perfect and gentle and kind for Eden. HE was what she needed. Eden has been through unimaginable trauma and it breaks my heart to see her feel like she isn't enough. This book completely tugged at my heart strings while simulanteously had me swooning over Chase.

Thank you Hannah Bird for giving me an e-ARC!

This book was heartbreaking, hopeful, and so so sweet. I mean.. CHASE!! 😍 I rooted for Eden’s healing all throughout; but really.. with the people she had around to really love her, I had no doubt she would find her way. I need to find my Zoey.

I’m ready for the next one!

It’s difficult to put into words how much I absolutely loved this book! I laughed, I cried, I swooned, and my jaw dropped to the floor several times. What an incredibly beautiful story!

I absolutely loved Eden and how strong and resilient she was through her trauma. It was so beautiful watching as she healed and learned to depend on others to push through everything. I really enjoyed experiencing all the pieces of her story coming together to give us the whole picture of before and now. I even liked seeing the times she really struggled because it was so real and so relatable. I also thought the parts with her therapist were so important and moving as Eden processed through her trauma and adjusted to her new life after it.

As difficult as some parts of this book were to read, I found the lessons in it so important. So many people think that just because someone is family by blood, means they can get away with hurting you and you just have to deal with it and forgive and move on. Eden showed us that the family she chose was there for her more than her blood family. I really loved watching those “chosen family” relationships develop and grow throughout the book and experiencing her relationship with Chase as she learned to trust him.

I definitely recommend this to all lover of romance and those who love reading stories of trauma and healing. Already beyond excited for Hannah’s next novel!

I really don’t want to write a review with spoilers because I don’t want it to be hidden …. This book was an absolute home run for me . 5 stars! The medium pace was easy to read and follow. The whole time I was reading this book I was IN Colorado, I was IN the bar with this group, and I was IN the healing process of our FMC’s journey. The authors descriptions throughout and meaningful conversations were put together with the perfect delivery. I found myself bawling for pain and joy multiple times and the ending was PERFECTION. Please do your heart a favor and read this book about a woman’s journey to finding the Then after what she feels like was the End of her story.

This was absolutely a case of the right book at the right time for me. This was such a lovely, well-written story of healing and learning to love yourself enough to love someone else and it really touched me deeply. Had I read this in another time in my life, I may not have been ready for the heavy topics discussed, and I really recommend checking the trigger warnings if you have any concerns, because this is one that I feel does need some warning if you have any concerns about specific traumas. I was able to get through this because none of them were a trigger for me specifically, although I did relate deeply to a lot of things Eden felt with regards to her strained relationship with her mother.

I loved being front and center with Eden’s therapy and healing from her recent trauma, and watching her allow someone to become part of her life and learn to trust again. While I would usually have had a problem with Eden and Chase’s insta-love, with this story it just worked for me, as had they been pining and slow burning in their feelings, I don’t know that Eden would have been ready to tackle her trust issues in therapy quite as readily, as she wouldn’t have had a specific reason to try quite yet.

I think, while this book is heavy and might not be for everyone, if you’re ready to read an emotional, beautiful story of healing and love, this might just be the one for you.

Jeśli chodzi o Chase’a? Z początku nic nie poczułam i nawet w jednym momencie mnie trochę zawiódł. Natomiast jakże się myliłam. Ten człowiek to chodzący skarb. I uważam, że musicie go poznać.

Healing, is fucking brutal.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow this book was so good. You get it all, I wanted to cry and scream so many times but then I also laughed and swooned.

I want this to be a tv show, now. I want to put faces to names and this book to turn into a series that never ends. I loved all the characters (except two, you know who you are!) Everyone should have a Zoey in their lives. She is an amazing friend and Eden wouldn't have had a happily ever after without her! I love their friendship so much.

I loved reading along as Eden left down her guard bit by bit. Listening to her story broke my heart. She needed a change of scenery to help her heal and that's how she ended up in Loveless, CO! She wasn't looking for love, didn't think she'd be capable of it after what happened. But Chase broke down her walls and she knew she could trust him with her dark past and with her heart.

Chase, the steamy shop owner next door. I hate hiking but I would hike a fourteener for him!! He fell in love with Eden the second he saw her. He was so patient with her, even when he thought she was involved with someone else! He let her confide in him when she was ready and he said all the right words.

And for my favorite character... GARY! The previous owner of Zoey's bar that still lives upstairs aka the town gossip. He knows it all and what he doesn't know he'll find out! When he said he has two daughters now, I almost cried. He's the father Eden never had and deserved. He is absolutely hilarious and I love him so much!

Hannah's second book What's Left of Me just came out this month and I cannot wait to read about Zoey and Aaron's love and to be reunited with Gary!!

Oh and I now want a lemon wedge tattoo! "to add sweetness to the bitter circumstances of my life." 🍋

First and foremost I want to thank Hannah for letting me read her debut novel that hold a really important part of her life and holds so much meaning for her. Writing about our stories are the most vulnerable and brave thing we can do, it’s the way we regain power and get to tell our story in our own terms.
Hannah creates a tender but compelling tale about healing and choosing ourselves over anything else, even when that means leaving the ones we loved the most behind. Eden’s story moved me and made me reflect in my own trauma and how, even when the progress isn’t linear, every day we show up for ourselves is a win and a small triumph.
Sweet, heartbreaking and powerful, The End and Then is the perfect women’s fiction to dive deep into ourselves and how far we’ve come.
Hannah I can’t wait to read everything your write, I’ll be there to cheer for you in the first line.
