El que susurra en la oscuridad supone un desvío en las obras de Howard Phillips Lovecraft hacia la ciencia ficción, sin por ello descuidar su faceta literaria más el terror. Narra en su mayor parte la entrevista de su protagonista con el enigmático Henry Wentworth Akeley, un anciano postrado en una silla de ruedas y en un lamentable estado físico. Akeley le revelará durante la entrevista mucha información sobre una supuesta raza extraterrestre y su habilidad para extirpar cerebros que luego mantienen con vida. En el transcurso de la entrevista, el narrador descubrirá la horrenda verdad tras el relato de su interlocutor.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft es un escritor nacido en Providence, Estados Unidos, en 1890 y fallecido en 1937. A día de hoy se le reconoce como uno de los más grandes autores de terror junto con Edgar Allan Poe, y muchos lo consideran uno de los precursores de la ciencia ficción. Sus obras, una mezcla de terror, ciencia ficción y fantasía oscura, han sido descritas con términos como ficción extraña u horror cósmico. No disfrutó de éxito alguno en vida, aunque a modo póstumo sus obras han pasado a formar parte de los grandes clásicos de la literatura de género universal.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.

Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.

Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.

The Mythos parts of this one are very strong, with ancient but seldom-spoken of presence of the creepy what-are-they under the hills coming out at night and making odd noises. I liked the alien artifacts and the solitary homesteader's unwise attempts to research the mystery.

The bulk of the story is epistolary and that dragged a bit. I could have used more explanation for why Akeley didn't simply leave (especially since he has the son in San Diego, safely far off). And as is often the case with Lovecraft, the parts that would have been the most frightening or suspenseful happen off page or are narrated post-facto so we know the protagonist did not end up with his brain in a cannister.

To be fair this was slightly spoilered by me having already read Threshold, which is based on this. So I wasn't surprised by the science fiction elements. Also, I have to say I think Hawk improved on this by having the characters actually explore the underground in search of the missing people.

But anyway: Weird fun. Would read more about the Outer Ones.

Odličan izbor Lavkraftovih priča objedinjenih na jednom mestu, a moram pomenuti i fantastičan dizajn same knjige, u izdanju Orfelina, koji je zaštitni znak edicije "Poetika strave".

Svaka od ovih priča je podsetnik da stvari nikada nisu onakve kakvim nam se čine na prvi pogled i dvojaka opomena: da nikoga i ništa ne uzimamo zdravo za gotovo i da, šta god da uradimo i koliko god da pokušavamo da predvidimo rasplet događaja, tu igru gubimo.

Pored klasika "Šaptač u tami", izdvojila bih priče "Hladan vazduh" i "Ljubav prema mrtvima". Najjezivije priče za mene su one u kojima strah ima ljudsko obličje.

Knjia Šaptač u tami sadrži sedam novela objavljenih u različitim časopisima tokom dvadesetih godina prošlog stoljeća, i to: Šaptač u tami (1931), Slika u kući (1921), Vrebajući strah (1923), Neizrecivo (1925), Užas u četvrti Red Huk (1926), Hladan Vazduh (1928), Ljubav prema mrtvima (1924).

Šaptač u tami. Ah, kako divna priča. Od prve do posljednje stranice ona predstavlja ogledalo o koje treba da se ugleda svaki drugi horor. I sve je to tako uklopljeno da i kada se završi ona i dalje traje. Njen prvi dio odnosi se na prepisku, dok drugi dio sadrži terenski posao i upoznavanje Onostranog. Student antropologije Albert Vilmart istražuje pojave koje su van domašaja ljudskog poimanja. Nakon izjave da u brdima Vermonta vrebaju bića dobijena fuzijom ljuskara, rakova, sljepih miševa i sl. Vilmrat kreće da razmjenjuje pisma sa Henri Ejklijem jednim od stanovnika okruga Vindham. Svako pismo nosi jedinstvenu razinu jeze. Ono nije eskplicitno već se stvara prostor za nagoviještaj i bizarnost. Zaista postoji neka iskonska draž u tome kada se čitaju pisma, a koja za cilj imaju da razotkriju ili makar nagovijeste “drugu stranu”. Ono što nosi samu atmosferičnost priče jeste činjenica da je Ejkli sam na farmi. Otuđen od svijeta. A u blizini njega vreba ono što ljudsko oko još nije vidjelo.

Kroz priče Lavkraftovi likovi su pustolovi, koji prepušteni višim silama tumaraju kroz planine, groblja, napuštene objekte tražeći nepoznate dimenzije. Okreću se ka strahu. Kroz Lavkraftove priče dosta toga se može naučiti ili podsijetiti jer postoje reference na semitsku, grčku ili bilo koju drugu mitologiju.

It's strange to have someone so verbose so copiously use the phrase "terrible beyond description".

I was pretty much ready to give up on this book until I got to The Dunwich Horror. That story, and the two that followed it were pretty entertaining; though to be honest I'm not sure if I actually liked them, or if the preceding stories were just so boring that anything even moderately interesting seemed good by comparison.

I like horror, fantasy and sci-fi and thought I should give some Lovecraft a go as he keeps popping up as the daddy of it all. Unfortunately I couldn't get into this at all.
He comes up with some good scenarios and many of the stories start promisingly enough but then the short ones just end with no real conclusion and the long ones drag and drag until it is a struggle just to get to the end. There is almost no dialog, very few characters and the writing style is inconsistent and maybe even a little bit lazy. I found myself struggling to get to the end of some of the longer stories and not really engaging with any of them.

Ovo je bio moj prvi susret sa Lavkraftom i mogu slobodno da kažem da je ispunio sva očekivanja za nastavak našeg druženja. Nisu sve priče u ovoj knjizi savršene. Prva priča, po kojoj je ova knjiga dobila ime, definitivno se najviše izdvaja od ostalih. Pored toga što je dosta duža u odnosu na ostale, najveću jezu sam osetio dok sam čitao upravo "Šaptača u tami". Sama pomisao da se nalazite u kući, za koju sigurno znate da osim vas i njenog domaćina nema nikog drugog unutra, a zatim u neko doba noći začujete glas koji ne podseća na ljudski, sasvim je dovoljna da vas izvede iz zone komfora, a još kada to svojim detaljnim opisima začini Lavkraft, budite sigurni da vam neće biti prijatno. Pored ove brutalne priče, dopale su mi se još "Vrebajući strah" i "Hladan vazduh", a posebno ova druga, čiji me je kraj raspametio. Odlična zbirka priča za upoznavanje sa Lavkraftovim radom, barem sam je ja tako doživeo. Kuća običnog farmera u napuštenom mestu koju svake noći okupiraju nepoznata stvorenja, udar groma koji sa sobom odnosi žrtve na misteriozan način, čovek koji boluje od neobične bolesti zbog koje je primoran da održava hladnu temperaturu u sobi...Sve to vas čeka u ovoj zbirci priča, kao i sjajan pogovor Dejana Ognjanovića.

Prvi put se susrećem sa Lavkraftovim književnim radom i iskreno, nisam očekivala da će mi se toliko dopasti. Ova zbirka priča prepuna je mistične atmosfere koja ispunjava um ali i prostor izvan same knjige. Iako ne mogu da kažem da sam duboki poznavalac horor literature, mogu da kažem da stil pisanja odudara od svakog s kojim sam se do sada susretala. Lavkraft svojim pisanjem nekako postavlja celu mračnu, čudnu i mističnu situaciju u okrilje realnosti i to je ono što je čini izuzetno stvarnom. Čitajući ove kratke priče, imala sam utisak da su se događaji zaista desili.

Izdvojila bih priče ,,Šaptač u tami'' koji ukazuje na jednu perspektivu vanzemaljske inteligencije i prilično mi se dopada način na koji je to ostvareno u ovoj priči. Nakon toga, ,,Slika u kući'', koja me je svojim kratkim sadržajem i samom idejom oduševila. Ipak, ,,Ljubav prema mrtvima'' je najstrašnija, jer je karakteriše odsustvo bilo kakve natprirodne pojave, već je u centar pažnje postavljen sam čovek i njegov psihopatski um.

Ove priče odaju utisak piščevog dubokog interesovanja za sve mistično i ,,neizrecivo''. On je smatrao da je život užasna stvar i da užas ne dolazi, nego nas već uveliko okružuje. Ta ideja se provlači kroz njegove priče i iako možda nije direktno iskazana, svakako nas navodi da se zapitamo ko smo zapravo mi, šta nas okružuje i kakav nas užas može dočekati u sopstvenom okruženju a ponekad i u sopstvenom umu.
Lavkraft u svojim pričama ne daje nikakvo rešenje na koji način se užas može izbeći ( osim možda samoubistvom i ludilom) i to je ono što ga toliko odvaja od drugih priča ovog žanra.

Ono što bih izdvojila iz pogovora urednika dr Dejana Ognjanovića, a što nekako opisuje Lavkraftovo pesništvo je:
,,U svetu koji je mnogima snošljiv samo zbog nade da negde tamo gore postoji neki drugi, bolji svet - ima li većeg užasa nego aludirati da je ovaj čemer dole samo odraz još većeg čemera tamo gore?''

I am going to write something that may ban me from the esteem of many genre readers for life. So be it, I gotta say this: Lovecraft was not a good writer.

As evidence of this, I give you one of his most popular stories, "At the Mountains of Madness". The story starts off great with a narrative told in a cautious tone; the descriptions of arctic exploration; the ensuing discoveries that hint at great and awesome things - I really dug these ideas; and the subsequent violence that suggests something truly wrong is going on. The story then follows two men to the Mountains of Madness, and everything is fine - creepy, well told, interesting - until they find some murals depicting the lives of the Old Ones, and they decide to decipher them - right there. And what does Lovecraft do with his story that, so far, has drawn the reader in and set the stage for something odd and scary? He infodumps about the Old Ones for many, many pages - and with that, all narrative momentum is killed, the main characters forgotten, and everything that follows is made routine.

I like Lovecraft's ideas, and I will continue to read his stories; I cannot, however, understand the hype that has built up around his legacy. Maybe it was cool to like him when fewer people did.

Tardé más de un año en terminar esta obra, y tengo más que motivos justificados. No acostumbro a leer antologías, prefiero siempre novelas cerradas y autoconclusivas, así que de entrada esta lectura está fuera de mi zona de comfort. Hacía bastante que quería leer a Lovecraft, pura y simplemente porque venía de jugar al Bloodborne y quería experimentar la fuente de inspiración desde cerca. Es por eso que compré esta selección de cuentos y novelas (aparentemente) cortas que se centran en el Cthulhu Mythos, la única rama de las historias de Lovecraft que me interesaba tocar. Sin embargo, rápidamente me encontré con que el estilo de escritura me chocaba mucho. Después de investigar un poco, me enteré que, además de ser conocido por ser racista, este estadounidense fue un elitista del lenguaje inglés, y consideraba solo a la versión británica como la "más perfecta", desestimando el slang norteamericano. Y entonces comprendí el por qué de sus oraciones elaboradas y su vocabulario complicado. De a momentos me recordaba a Borges, porque el leerlo requiere que el lector tenga cierta cultura general, y otras veces tenía tintes de Dickens, por su pomposidad y su larga adjetivación. A pesar de ello, Lovecraft se alza lo suficiente para diferenciarse y tener su estilo único.

La reseña corta sería: me aburrió muchísimo.



La reseña larga viene a desmembrar un poco más esta selección de historias. La mayoría de sus argumentos sigue más o menos la misma línea (a excepción de The Mountain of Madness): un investigador descubre que otro científico/investigador ha realizado una exhaustiva lectura de sucesos en apariencia paranormal y de repente se ha vuelto loco, por ende este protagonista debe investigar todavía más, para al final revelar la verdad cósmica detrás de todo. En general todas sus obras (si mal no recuerdo) están narradas en primera persona desde la perspectiva de un novato o nuevo en el mundo de estas investigaciones paranormales. No hay un solo personaje femenino en todas estas historias, y está bien, no esperaba para nada un manifiesto feminista, pero esto solo viene a colaborar con la monotonía en los personajes. Todos los protagonistas hablaban y se expresaban igual (como supongo Lovecraft hablaba), todos con mucha altanería a la hora de introducirse como personajes, por ejemplo:

Bear in mind closely that I did not see any actual visual horror at the end. To say that a mental shock was the cause of what I inferred - that last straw which sent me racing out of the lonely Akeley farmhouse and through the wild domed hills of Vermont in a commandeered motor at night - is to ignore the plainest facts of my final experience. Notwithstanding the deep things I saw and heard, and the admitted vividness of the impression produced on me by these things, I cannot prove even now whether I was right or wrong in my hideous inference. For after all, Akeley's disappearance establishes nothing. The Whisperer in Darkness, pg. 217.

Es claro el uso del lenguaje de modo exhaustivo, al punto tal que me crucé con palabras que jamás pensé que existían en inglés (como "thenceforward", con la que recuerdo haber alzado las cejas y morderme los labios al leerla). También noté que en cada cuento/novela se enamoraba de cierta palabra y la utilizaba para describir absolutamente todo lo que se cruzaba, como "opalescent", o repetía bastante términos (hoy casi en desuso) a modo de muletillas, como "hitherto", "whence". Vaya si me sorprendí al llegar a la trascendente conclusión de que, a pesar de que esto fue escrito a principios del siglo pasado, padece de ciertas falencias tal como los libros actuales. Ser un autor clásico no te libera de todos los pecados.

No puedo negar, sin embargo, que algunas de sus historias me han producido terror. Hacía muchísimo tiempo que no me daba miedo pasar de página, porque no quería saber qué pasaba a continuación, y a la vez sí, sí quería, quería entender por qué estos personajes rozaban la locura. El efecto que genera el miedo a lo desconocido, a lo que no se puede entender, la tensión que va subiendo con cada párrafo hasta el clímax - eso está bien logrado, y entiendo por qué este hombre tiene tantos fans.



Diseminaré un poco sin spoilers cada obra que compone esta antología:

*Dagon: 5 páginas. Siendo sincera no recuerdo qué pasa en este cuento. El prefacio dice que solo de modo retroactivo ingresa dentro del Cthulhu Mythos, aunque cronológicamente fue de las primeras historias que escribió. No podría puntuarla. Démosle un aprobado: 3 estrellas.

*The Nameless City: 11 páginas. Interesante, arranca como una historia de arqueólogos, te agarra un nosequé cuando se menciona al Necronomicon, tal vez un poco densa con las extensas y precisas descripciones, pero zafa. 3 estrellas.

*The Hound: 7 páginas. Sinceramente de los cuentos, es mi favorito. Investigué un poco y no es considerada una muy buena obra de él, quizá palidece en lore y argumento frente a otras, pero sin dudas fue la que más terror me causó. No quería pasar de página. Pero necesitaba saber! 4 estrellas. Si alguien en tan pocas páginas te genera terror, es que está bien escrito.

*The Festival: 8 páginas. De vuelta no recuerdo qué pasó en este. No habrá sido muy trascendental para mí. Supongo que habrá habido algún ritual. Desaprobado. 2 estrellas.

*The Call of Cthulhu: 27 páginas. Comienzan a alargarse sus historias y con ellas las descripciones. Pero por fin vemos a Cthulhu en el título: es lo que más me interesaba. En relación a lore, es muy rico, pero caemos en descripciones pesadas y oraciones complejas una vez más. 3 estrellas.

*The Case of Charles Daxter Ward: 117 páginas, primera novela "corta". Lo pongo entre comillas porque, entre la fuente miniatura de esta edición y lo densa y pesada que se hizo la lectura para mí, no fue corta para nada. Esta nouvelle fue el motivo por el que tardé más de un año, porque fue en esta obra con la que me atasqué. De repente ya nada me interesaba: la narración era densa, espesa, muchas palabras, muchos párrafos que no llevaban a ningún lado, y con un final más que predecible y anticlimático, el build up se lo dejó en la casa, porque no hubo momento de tensión ni nada parecido. El personaje principal otro denso para hablar y narrar. Siento que se me mezclan los hechos, siempre se daba vueltas sobre lo mismo, y al final no te queda nada, ninguna imagen cruda, ninguna sensación, ni siquiera miedo. 1 estrella. Por su culpa casi abandono este libro. Edit: acabo de ver que esta obra es la más querida por los fans. Ay, lo lamento tanto. En realidad no.

*The Dunwich Horror: 39 páginas, que se hicieron eternas. Pensé que mejoraríamos después de lo anterior, pero esta solo reafirmó la estructura que veníamos leyendo, aunque por suerte es más corta y tal vez más llevadera, ya que los hechos deben desenvolverse más rápido si tiene menos páginas. 2 estrellas.

*The Whisperer in Darkness: 60 páginas. No por nada la antología lleva el nombre de esta historia: es, de las novelas cortas de esta selección, la mejor. Al principio padece de lo mismo que las obras anteriores, pero hacia la mitad cobra ritmo, suspenso y tensión. El final es maravilloso: tuve escalofríos con el último párrafo. Si bien el plot twist es predecible, eso no lo hace menos emocionante. 4 estrellas.

*At the Mountains of Madness: 93 páginas. Por fin se rompe con la estructura que veníamos llevando, y Lovecraft nos lleva al Polo Sur, a una expedición de científicos, geólogos, paleontólogos. En esta novela Lovecraft llevó la mathesis de Barthes al límite, puesto que la cantidad de conocimiento técnico, de vocabulario específico, te hace pensar que tal vez el autor fue un geólogo que partió hacia un campamento de investigadores en el impenetrable mar blanco. Si bien se puede volver pesado en torno al principio, vale la pena porque se llega a una pieza del puzle muy interesante y rica en lore. Noté por fin (no sé si recién prestaba atención a la lectura) que hay conexiones explícitas entre sus historias, y que esta novela esté colocada al final tiene más que buen sentido. Creo que destaca más que nada porque es bien diferente a las demás, aunque llegados a este punto el recorrido de sus historias ya es conocido y predecible. No me generó miedo en absoluto, fue como un The Nameless City pero más largo y detallista. 3 estrellas.

Ese, creo, es el mayor problema con esta selección de cuentos: que se siente que se lee la misma historia varias veces, con algunas variables que pueden ir cambiando. Salvo por contadas excepciones (The Hound, The Whisperer in Darkness), todas siguen la misma línea de narración, introducción, desarrollo y desenlace, lo que le quita la mayor gracia y hasta motivación para leer. Supongo que esto que digo no es nuevo para los fans del autor, pero para mí, que esto fue lo primero (y tal vez lo último) que leo de él, es un punto bastante negativo en su contra.



Admito que fue toda una experiencia y que fue muy difícil puntuar y hacer esta reseña. Me alegra haberlo leído, me siento un tanto experta en el Cthulhu Mythos ahora, necesitaba instruirme en la materia. Pero considero que tuve suficiente Lovecraft por un tiempo. Sus demás obras no me llaman la atención, y siento que esta selección de historias fue más que una presentación (y representación) completa del autor. Sí recomiendo leer las historias que tuvieron mejor puntaje, sobretodo The Hound que es corto y se lee en un viajecito de transporte público. Pero por lo demás, a menos que realmente quieras meterte en este intrincado lore, no lo recomiendo. Se puede pasar por esta vida sin saber qué fue de la ciudad de R'yleh.

If you like reading Poe, then you will be fond of Lovecraft..
But in my opinion Poe is better!!

Nevertheless these are good horror stories..
"At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Dunwich Horror" being my favourites ones.
Also if you haven't yet read Lovecraft, this is a good place to start with..

I cannot say that I loved this stories, but I liked them..
They keep me turning the pages..

a very fantastic, gloomy, peculiar, insane and paranoid nightmare awaits the bold reader daring to read and enter this world..

'The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.'

I took my sweet, sweet time reading this collection of short stories, mostly because I am a novice in the Lovecraftian world of death and fear, but also because the ingenuity of the author lays precisely in the slow decent to madness; in being slowly but surely absorbed in the doomsday atmosphere he so marvelously creates by using incredibly creative, never-before thought-of compound adjectives.

His style of writing is not for those unused to old-fashioned syntax, but having read many, many classics, I found this not troublesome. However, his over-use of adjectives may confound you a bit and you may find yourself losing track of the narrative in certain places because you are overwhelmed by words. But I guess that is a part of that slow decent into madness- you really feel like you are losing yourself in the space-time continuum.

This collection contains some of his best and most famous stories, such as 'The Call of Cthlhu' and 'At the Mountains of Madness', and is a great place for a beginner who doesn't know too much about the Lovecraft Mythos, but is nevertheless ready to plunge into it and enjoy the wild ride.

All in all, I really enjoyed my introduction to Lovecraft and am glad that I took time to slowly read and appreciate each of the stories included here, because it has only left me hungry for more.

Me gustó, está bien, pero tampoco es algo que me impacte.

Read as part of the Chaos Reading Emergency Group Read for True Detective & The Yellow King. So far, this is the creepiest of all the Lovecraft stories I've read. There were genuine goosebumps involved. I wish I had the time right now to read all of the Cthulhu mythos stories..

This was a great story, and certainly my favourite Lovecraft to date. What a pity the audiobook version I listened to had a narrator with such poor English language skills! I couldn't believe it - every word with three syllables or more either had an extra syllable added on, or removed. I don't think he got a single one correct. Ever come across a word you've never seen before while narrating an audiobook? No worries - you just make up an alternative word and say it with confidence. The only people who'll notice are... those of us who've ever read a book, seen a movie or heard someone speak before. *facepalm*

Hoewel ik geloof dat zonder Lovecraft het horrorgenre er heel anders uit had gezien, heb ik geleerd dat ik het niet hoef te lezen om deze invloed te begrijpen. Die invloed valt namelijk ook gewoon te merken in de werken van andere schrijvers die later kwamen - en die wel een stuk makkelijker weglezen.

Qua creativiteit ontbreekt er niks aan deze bundel. Ik struikelde simpelweg over de ouderwetse, opgeklopte, stroop-zonder-suikerstijl van Lovecraft. In sommige verhalen was dit erger dan in andere, maar het had van mij in het algemeen wat vlotter geschreven mogen zijn. Dit naast wat andere stijltendensen die Lovecraft vertoont en die de intrigerende factor van het verhaal niet ten goede komen, zoals het tot een flinterdunne draad uitrekken van de spanningsboog door alinea's te beginnen met zinnen als "maar wat me toen gebeurde, vervult me nog steeds met angst" waarna de lange alinea gevuld wordt met allemaal zinnen die niks maar dan ook niks vertellen over wat hem met angst vervulde waarna je aan het eind van de alinea het niet eens meer kan boeien wat hem dan met angst vervuld heeft. En daarnaast heeft Lovecraft de neiging lááánge omschrijvingen te geven maar die helaas vooral gevuld worden met wat het object of het geluid of het beest juist niet was, zodat je vervolgens eigenlijk alleen weet hoe het er niet uitziet of klinkt.

Misschien zijn het voor mensen met meer geduld prachtige werken, maar ik heb me nog nooit zo geërgerd tijdens het lezen van een boek dus wellicht was het wel niks voor mij.

Sentimientos encontrados. YO OPINO, cuatro relatos después del Ciclo Blasfemo de Cthulhu, que la mitología, el lore y los conceptos son muy chulos y rompedores pero las historias en sí son mejorables. Una vez más, siento que Lovecraft peca de escribir tal cual que algo es "horroroso" y "terrorífico" en lugar de describir el ambiente como algo ACTUALLY horroroso y terrorífico?? Como que lo adjetiviza todo de manera muy impersonal en lugar de narrarlo a través de los personajes y eso se carga la tensión y la atmósfera de terror. Es que enciman están todos los relatos en primera persona, queda super poco orgánico. En este creo que sobran mazo páginas en las que se repite todo demasiado, sobretodo a la mitad. Hubiera preferido que me desarrollaran más el arco final.

Kupih prijateljici za rođendan pa rekoh da bacim pogled dok joj ne uručim. Nisam to ovo ovako zamišljao. Još davno sam čitao Lavkrafta tako da je malo šta ostalo u sećanju, ali odlično znam ko je i koliko je (bio) uticajan. Međutim, iako vidim zašto i kako je (bio) uticajan, meni ovo ne radi. Stil je očajan - samo onoliko puta može da se ponovi 'bogohulno' i 'stravično' a da ne postane karikatura. Ideje su na granici palpa - vanzemaljci koji lete kroz svemir na svojim krilcima koji žive na planeti na obodu sunčevog sistema koji su međudimenzionalni entiteti koji stavljaju ljudske mozgove u tegle koji... Malo je previše za ovaj mozak koji već ima osećaj da je u tegli.

Sasvim zadovoljavajuće upoznavanje s Lavkraftom. Mnogo toga mi je baš lepo leglo, od načina na koji gradi napetost kroz priče do deskriptivnosti njegove proze i motiva koji je sačinjavaju - folklorne i mitološke reference, okultizam, neurotični pripovedači. Ono s čim se jesam namučila su naučnofantastični elementi, do te mere da sam pred kraj naslovne priče izgubila interesovanje da uopšte nastavim s čitanjem. Ipak, to će pre biti neko zapažanje u domenu mog ukusa nego zamerka zbirci ili Lavkraftu. Sve u svemu, radujem se daljem čitanju, a iz ove zbirke bih izdvojila Hladan vazduh, Ljubav prema mrtvima i Sliku u kući kao omiljene.

It may have been a slow read, but I do understand, why Lovecrafts stories and Chtuhlu lore has become so popular.
Stories truly were interesting. Obviously the language used is old and a bit hard to read for a modern reader, esspecialy a non native english speaker. But that shouldnt discourage anyone from digging in these stories.
Overall a good book with interesting stories.

It took me quite some time to finish this book.
One of the reasons for that, I believe, is because this collection was not originally meant to be read as a novel, however, having multiple stories from Cthulhu Mythos put together, it is exactly what we get - characters from short stories and novellas keep re-emerging as shadows, and everything is bound together by The Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred (Lovecraft's play pretend game name from his childhood) and his demonic Necronomicon.

Now this is where I formed my more or less definite opinion that the masterpieces of H.P. Lovecraft are actually his short stories, which are the first 5 entries in this collection. Why? Because up until The Case of Charles Dexter Ward I was utterly blown away by the sheer horror of atmosphere and surroundings that HPL created, with abrupt and terrifying endings that each of them had and made me scared of staying home alone at night, almost hearing the wet footsteps of the unknown entity that I had just read about. It was not easy, but it was absolutely worth it.

Now, when it comes to longer stories and novellas, I think this is where it got a bit too much. As amazing the descriptions of environments are (I realize they are crucial because everything about Lovecraft is more about the impression than the plot, except for the ending twist), 10 pages+ only about the looks of the tunnels in At the Mountains of Madness are too heavy. It is true that HPL was writing in the style of 19th century, himself being from the 20th, and the long Romantic descriptions are an inevitability in the genre - I guess it is just not my cup of tea.

Another reason why I prefer HPL's short stories to novellas is that any writer can incorporate some horror or awe in 20 pages or more - try doing that in 5.

I am now 99% sure that without the Star Spawn of Cthulhu, we would not have Xenomorph from Alien, Demogorgon from Stranger Things, and who knows what else. The whole H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic lore is a brilliant, dark trip of shivers and outworldish imagery that formed science fiction genre as we know it. And pardon me all the adjectives - I know HPL would.

Vrlo dobra zbirka, koja će biti zanimljiva kako onima koji su već imali priliku da čitaju Lavkraftova dela, tako i onima koji se tek upoznaju sa ovim piscem. Po kvalitetu bih posebno izdvojio priče "Šaptač u tami" i "Užas u četvrti Red Huk". "Vrebajući strah" je jedina priča koja, po mom mišljenju, ne uspeva da dostigne nivo ostalih. Mislim da joj ni Ognjanoivićev prevod ne čini uslugu, jer je na trenutke jezik krajnje rogobatan. Međutim, to je mala zamerka, koja ne utiče previše na konačni utisak - "Šaptač u tami" je za svaku preporuku.

Excellent HPL novella, rooted in his Cthulu mythos, with a central sci-fi theme. I found this was written in a slightly more approachable style than his typical, remote narration style which is comprised wholly of scientific like recountings of the narrator's experiences as if taken from a letter written to an esteemed university professor. Mind you, I said slightly.

Lovecraft sí que sabía crear atmósfera.
Es un buen relato que consigue enganchar al espectador, al mismo tiempo que lo mantiene totalmente dentro de la historia gracias a esa ambientación de terror y suspense. Lo he leído por una propuesta de lectura conjunta. No es lo primero ni será lo último que lea de él.

Lovecraft uses words like “mad”, “horror” and “horrendous” to claim certain sights or situations are scary, while he could’ve very easily spent some time on describing why instead.

this was just very short, so obviously there isn’t much space to introduce a lot of detail. it was enjoyable to read, but the other stories in this book are just a lot better.

I liked the backstory we’re introduced to but for some reason I had so much trouble picturing everything that happened that I was at a complete loss. I liked it slightly better than the dagon though.

this story made me actually really interested in the rest of the stories in this book. it was a bit longer than the two previous stories, and with good reason. this story had this very distinct aesthetic about it, which made it very enjoyable to read. it also just made me a bit more scared than the other two stories.

the festival 🌕🌕🌖
after the hound I expected another good story. I thought it’d only get better. that was wrong for me to think though: the festival wasn’t it for me. it started off quite strong and intriguing, but there was nothing scary about the plot reveal.

the call of cthulhu 🌕🌕🌕🌘
the famous cthulhu. I expected a lot more. I’m still questioning some of the things that happened in this story, as it was a bit hard for me to detect the silver lining.

the case of charles dexter ward 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
very weird to read so many racial slurs in a story that doesn’t criticise it… but the rest of the story was very well written. it felt very long at first and I was doubtful that I was even going to be able to finish it, but here we are. btw, I can definitely feel some Guillermo Del Torro in here

the dunwich horror 🌕🌗
this felt more like a children’s/monty python story to me, quite disappointing. I felt so stupid reading the townsfolk’s dialogue, I couldn’t understand a word of it so it made it very hard to read

the whisperer in darkness 🌕🌕🌖
Wilmarth is fucking stupid, who’d go out to someones house when you can clearly conclude there’s something very wrong. anyways it was enjoyable I guess? not the best by far, but I liked the alien aspect of it

at the mountains of madness 🌕🌖
this could’ve been SO much shorter, the details were d r a g g e d o u t. I don’t care on what longitude the story takes place.
