The writer has melded ancient Chinese myths and legends with history to illustrate the beginnings of Chinese civilization. This creates confusion with the reader as to what is mythical and what is genuine history. Obviously the use of Chinese names cannot be avoided, but the proliferation of them in the text can be mind-numbingly frustrating which can lead to the reader losing the thread of the narrative. This is not a book for the general reader who is unfamiliar with ancient Chinese history and mythology.
