"Luca, I think we need to talk about this." She sat up with a frown on her face.Secondly, at times I felt the domestic discipline aspect of their relationship was more important to him than she was and that he was too inflexible. For instance, after they have sex for the first time, he tells her that he shouldn't have done it ("I told you before, I don't bring pleasure when discipline is what is due"). In fact, making love is exactly what they needed to do since she was unsure about the domestic discipline side of their relationship. If he had punished her, he would have pushed her further away. (And Jason was right to get frustrated when Luca threatened to punish Teagan while they were discussing ways to save Evie; really, Luca, that's what you to concentrate on at this point?) Finally, I really didn't like that Luca and the other guys tried to keep Teagan out of the plan to save her sister. First of all, she's a well-trained and capable cop. Secondly, she has a vested interest in keeping her sister safe. Thirdly, Luca's reasoning -- that his concern for her safety would "distract" him -- reminds me of Pence's rationale for not having professional one-on-one meetings with women; in other words, this is your problem, dude; get over it.
"Oh?" Luca's eyebrow raised in warning at her.
Before Evie finished her sentence, Jason was standing in front of them. Bending down so that he was eye level with her, he spoke. "Listen to me carefully. You are lucky that you aren't mine, or I would spank you here and now. If you ever even hint that what Montgomery has done to you is your fault again, I will paddle your ass raw. Do you understand me, Evelyn Marie Berkshire?"I really, really, really hope that this isn't going to be the next author's approach to a domestic violence survivor. Also, the machinations regarding rescuing Evie are absurd and, here, the book is using this for artificial plot point reasons. They have more than enough evidence that Evie is being abused; her boyfriend (a governor-elect) would not want this to get out so could not risk openly harming her; and Teagan is a police officer.
"I've never needed a man, Luca. This is hard for me."So many authors confuse submission with weakness -- and their female characters (in these books, the submissives are usually women) are all the more uninteresting because of this.
"Don't need me, then. Want me, desire me, long for me. You don't have to need me to belong to me."
