Jason A. Cheek, author of The World and The Last Paladin Series, lives in Germany due to his current job assignment. He lives with his wife and daughter, along with their two dogs Monte and Melow. Originally from West Palm Beach, Jason was born in Florida.
Interested in martial arts, swords, archery, Dungeon & Dragons, the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronisms), reading Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Jason became a computer gamer after leaving the Army. Paying his own way through college while working as a waiter, he studied to become an Occupational Therapist Assistant.
Teaching himself computers and networking on his own time. Jason changed career paths, becoming a Regional Systems Administrator several years later. During this time, he played many hours of first person shooters and strategy games at LAN parties around the United States or logged into Anarchy Online and World of Warcraft leading his guilds.
Excelling in his career as an Information Technology Specialist, Jason became a Microsoft Certified Systems Security Engineer and VMware Certified Professional, furthering his knowledge by learning new technology whenever possible.
Expanding his horizons, Jason became interested in extreme sports and traveling. Finding a job that allowed him to travel around the world while working on computers, he taught himself German and Polish and met his wife Anja.
Always interested in writing, Jason began his first novel called Flight, Book One of The Last Paladin Series, in 2013 and self-published the next year in 2014. He went on to continue writing, releasing the popular series The World in 2018.
Mistakes: this would be a good story, but the amount of errors ruins the flow of the story. With as easy as it is to get beta readers to go through and find mistakes, I personally find this level of quality to be unacceptable. Characters: The MC is hung up on big boobs. So much so that while reattaching a limb on a naked elf he manhandled them and had pervy type thoughts. This is unrealistic. In such a situation you don't really pay attention to the nakedness or breast as you are focused on trying to save a life. Plot: This is what saves this book from being a one star wonder. I actually enjoyed reading the overall story. 4/10
The story is well written and enjoyable for the most part but 90% of the book is the second day in the same dungeon that ate up the last 60% of the first book. By about the 50% mark I found my eyes glazing over the fight scenes. Descriptions are good but using a thousand words when one hundred are called for makes for some tedious reading. I'm not sure I will be continuing this series.
Mixing it Up is the second novel in the LitRPG/GameLit series The World by Jason Cheek.
This book was by far more interesting. Especially with all of brutal takedowns against the Syndicate players. Which leads to good relationships with all other players in the DelonShire and mine area. It’s actually pretty hilarious that these hacks keep repeating their foolhardy tactics in trying to take over the dungeon and get whooped again and again.
Ooh! Miya! Totally didn’t expect to see her character in game appear so soon. She does not remember their training sessions, as her previous avatar stated would be the case. I wonder if their relationship will grow? Cuz it definitely seemed like they were making eyes at each other. And that Startum lives in a kind of giant grey area when it comes to classifying different treatment for NPCs and other real people/players. So he just might snag an NPC girlfriend? Idk.
Thankfully the goblins didn’t get rapey. They mostly just ate their prisoners or victims. (Gags.) this game world is brutal though and of course there are despicable humans who play the game, and seem like they might find joy in attacking other players in game since it can’t really be considered illegal. At least as of yet? Have fun trying to convince the judicial system to take game play into account in regards to real life law. I can just imagine so many horrid situations popping up the longer The World is active, and this series progresses.
We kind of have a whole team of magical special snowflakes. Just ganking left and right. Tackling dungeons higher level player raids get wiped on. It seems the only distinction is Star’s amazing proficiency in battle plans.
How did all of this only take two days? It seems crazy. So much happens. The author does a fantastic job laying out the individual fights, keeping them from being overly confusing, or annoyingly repetitive. So just gonna go read the next book so I can see where his Nightmare quest line takes us.
I've read a lot of LitRPG and it's so nice to find an author that takes the genre to new places. The experienced MC's professional perspective and approach is refreshing. His goals and expectations are solidly realistic. His partnership with others in a guild that has existed long term in multiple gaming venues is a real bonus. But what I like the most is the respect for the game, the players, NPCs, etc. He's doing it as a business and is definitely 'in it to win it" but sees the long term benefits of ethical behavior. I really like that he doesn't put up with, or turn his back on, griefing newbies, ganking, bullying, and the malicious groups that prey on others rather than succeeding on their own merit.
There's so much packed in to each book that it's easy to lose sight of how short the time frames really are. (He's only gone from Requiem for two days.) He does so much that it seems like he's gotten so caught up in events that he's lost sight of the urgent situation in Requiem. Not at all. It really becomes apparent by Book #3 that this side trip is all about being set up and in position to accomplish his nightmare quest.
The violence is graphic, but not gratuitous in context of the storyline. The MC is not so OP that he doesn't get severely whooped on and he's appreciative of others' skill and support. The mentoring of the PuG is a nice touch. Players are having fun in ways that made me smile. Allies are recognized as value added relationships. I don't find the randy dude moments annoying. They're written in a burlesque style that kind of lightens things a bit and offsets some true ugliness. Startum is definitely on his way to becoming a champion of the people. And elven women aren't shrinking flowers?
Was very engaging. I played mmo for years so was fun to get a lot of the memories of how those games went in their day. You also get a wonderful world of futuristic gaming where you at in a VR Pod going full emersion into an MMO I would surely love to play. Almost feels like you are. My husband read the series first and told me how good it is.
I just rediscovered this author. After his first book I guess didn't hit follow author. I really enjoyed the second so much I'm going read the third book right away.
Nice addition to the series. It's always nice to see jerks get beat down, Can't read enough of that kind of thing. Good stuff here folks, if you haven't read any of this series, an you like LitRPG stuff, then you're missing out. Go get your copy now.
The author kept up the same pace and quality off the first book. I am so glad all three books are ready to read. I am powering through them all at a crazy pace. I love this story.
Great book two off to read the book three everybody likes access I recommend this book you should read all the series I will have read them from 1 2 and 3 start to finish without stopping
A great continuation of the series. Even better than the first book and it has me already excited about the next one. Lot's of great characters you can really care about and a plot that has weight.
Many first books will make several promises to the reader, and then dole them out over the course of a series. I felt like the main promise of the first book wasn't fulfilled, though this book does tie that one up nicely on the last few pages. I think if this book were merged with the first, and add in some more or better grammar editing, you'd have one very satisfying book. As it is, the first is a bit of a letdown, while this one is only good. I'm glad I gave this one a chance despite how the first one ended.
Was a fun read but editing quality still leaves something to be desired. I'm still stoked for book 3 though.
Edit: Okay so I've noticed at the preface of these books the author does give a disclaimer that he is doing this all himself and his editing isn't going to be as sharp as other more professionally published works. Props to you Mr. Cheek. I'm hoping you can get to the point where you can pay a top team of editors to go through your works with their fine-toothed editing combs. Until then I'll be glad to read them as they are.
Reading book 2 of the series brought me into a deeper understanding of The World and all its implications. The storyline is unfolding at a nice place with lots of interesting color along the way. I really liked the Wounded Warrior's Guild, I could personally relate to that.
I enjoyed it a good amount. I prefer it when the situation is that the character is stuck in the virtual world, but this was good too. I was able to get through it pretty quickly despite not being able to sit down & read for hours everyday. I'm definitely going to buy the next book.
Most of the focus of the story is in game but there is plenty of story there. The main character lives his life that way so it works, Occasional inconsistencys, specifically with game mechanics, make it hard to stay immersed. Fun series if you dont take these things too seriously.
As my headline says, this is a pretty good book but the author needs to add more chapter breaks. I think there was maybe 3/4 chapters total in 326 pages.
Also I realize he explains somethings for people who are not as familiar with MMORPGs but it feels like every second paragraph is him explaining something.
Reads like a real time video game. Each book takes 8 or 9 hours...and covers just a couple of days. A lot happens in each gaming session, so this is not a downside.
Heading into book #3, this one has me wondering where things are going. No big "Good vs Evil" theme...just gathering loot, leveling and finding players to join his guild. Interesting enough if you are a MMorpg player.
I found this series to be very enjoyable the first time I read it. Rereading for the second time and having a much larger base of books in the genre to compare it with, I have an even greater appreciation. Very well done. Extremely entertaining and a very well thought out storyline. Can't wsait for more in the series.
The battles are examples of great writing. This is a good progression with loads of setups and silly humor. Mature language is used appropriatly and gives these stories a more realistic feel. Reading the next one now.
Expanding on an amazing world and story, book 2 adds even more action, memorable characters, MMORPG concepts and experiences that bring back the visceral thrill of playing those games for the first time... keep up the amazing work!
The book focuses on the interaction and formation of new players roles in The World. The role PvP plays and the community of MMORPG players. Lots of tactics and interesting boss fights.
Running start and sprinting finish filled with non stop action. Game world is fascinating and side characters are unfortunately too many to realistically keep track of. Excited to read the next in the series.
