From New York Times Bestselling author Kristen Proby comes When We Break, a small-town, cowboy, heroine-in-danger romance, set in Bitterroot Valley!
Beckett
I’ve seen the gorgeous redhead with the big black dog that never leaves her side around town. She’s impossible to miss with that lush red hair and perfect green eyes. But it’s when she opens her plump lips and the sound of Ireland comes out of her kissable mouth that I know I’m a goner. I know she’s the one for me and I’ll do whatever it takes to make Skyla Gallagher mine. I can be a patient man and all I want in the world is to worship every bit of her, inside and out.
Skyla
I moved to the lovely town of Bitterroot Valley, Montana, because I needed a safe place. I left my life in New York as a prima ballerina after an injury that I never fully healed from, and to escape the obsession of a madman. I adore this new community, but I must admit that Beckett Blackwell is the very best part. I love his kindness, his patience, and his thoughtfulness. But most of all, I can’t get enough of the way he worships my body, and then does everything he can to pamper me afterwards. Beckett is a drug that I’ve become addicted to. But will my stalker find me in Montana, ruining everything we’ve started together, before we have had our chance at forever?

✨ Small town Romance ✨ Cowboy MMC X Dancer FMC ✨ Heroine in Danger ✨ He Falls First ✨ Best Friend’s Brother
Kristen never misses. She simply writes books that I can’t put down, and this one is no different. I loved Beckett and Skyla so damn much… in fact… move over Ryan Wild, Beckett Blackwell is my new favorite!
This book has so much swoon. Beckett falls so hard and so fast for Skyla and I loved him so much for it. And this man is protective as they get with an acts of service love language a mile long and a dirty mouth that had me absolutely feral. I love how Kristen always gets her couples together and gets them solid but you still know their obstacle is coming. It always keeps me on the edge of my seat, and this one. This one did me in.
Also Skyla has a service dog and the fact that Beckett prioritizes that dog as much as his girl. Instant green flag and total swoon fest. Your honor I love them.
I am always salivating for the next book from Kristen Proby. Her Montana based books scratch all the itches and wants that I have for small town romance. I love the families and atmosphere. I feel like I'm coming home every time I step into a story.
Beckett and Skyla were another delight. This one even bridged the gap between small town and another sub-genre I love. Between the book club of Skyla's that is reading Dom by SJ Tilly and Skyla's broody Irish brother... this had some fun cross-over moments. I can't wait for Connor's book!
But back to this one. I loved Beckett's farm and I felt right at home there. I loved Skyla's dance studio and her trusty guard dog, Riley. She may try to resist Beckett, as she has some baggage and is starting her life fresh. She fled the big city and her dance career after a stalker forced her into retirement. So she doesn't want any attention. She's just trying to heal.
Beckett is persistent and he goes all in convincing her that he can be a safe place and a home for her. Every little thing he does screams care-taker and stronghold. I was enamoured. He sweeps Skyla AND her dog off their feet. The man buys 5, count 'em 5 dog beds for Riley all over his home. He doesn't just bring aftercare a whole new meaning, but he is a dreamboat to boot.
This was a heart-warming story and I enjoyed every moment. You can dive right into this book is you want to, though I think starting with book 1 would serve you well.
Narrated by Connor Crais and Stephanie Nemeth-Parker. They handled the performance of the accents wonderfully. It was a true joy to listen to this one.
5 Stars 3.5 on the spice scale
CW: stalker, kidnapping, gun violence, harm to animal (he LIVES), PTSD, bit of bondage, discussion of eating disorders in dance community
*Thank you to Must Love Audio and the author for an ALC of this title.*
This was my first book by this author, and I have to say, I enjoyed it! The story is simple yet captivating, and the chemistry between the main characters is fantastic. Plus, there’s a touch of suspense that keeps things exciting. Beckett and Skyla's love story is beautiful and spicy, and let’s not forget about the adorable guard dog, Riley—he adds to the charm of this book!
Skyla has been through quite a lot. After dealing with an ankle injury and a pesky ex still hanging around, she decides to start fresh in a small town and open her own dance studio. One evening at a bar, she meets the Blackwell brothers, and Beckett immediately catches her eye. He asks her out, but given her past, Skyla is a bit hesitant and turns him down. However, Beckett is persistent, showing he’s genuinely interested in her, and eventually, Skyla warms up to the idea of a relationship.
I admire Skyla’s strength and independence. Even though her parents are billionaires, she doesn’t rely on their money; she works hard for what she loves. Her determination shines through after her injury when she opens her dance studio, continuing to pursue her passion. Beckett is a hardworking guy, too—he manages the ranch and respects Skyla’s boundaries while still showing her he’s different from her ex, making her feel safe and comfortable.
Their romance is fast-burning, but I loved every minute of it! What’s refreshing is their honesty with each other—there's no unnecessary miscommunication, and their relationship feels really healthy. The side characters are equally wonderful, and the family and friendship dynamics in the book are strong. I loved the Blackwell siblings and can’t wait to dive into their stories next!
3.5 ♥ I enjoyed this story by Kristen Proby. This author really knows how to write perfect small-town romances with soul. Whenever I read her books, I fall in love with the landscape she describes, as well as all the characters, main and secondary. ____________________ Follow me ♡ Instagram Facebook
This beautiful, emotional, sexy story between Beckett and Skyla had me immersed from the beginning. Beckett Blackwell is protective, caring, patient and wants nothing more than to earn Skyla's trust. Skyla is strong, kind, and fierce but she's been through trauma so trust doesn't come easily. Watching Beckett and Skyla's relationship unfold was perfection, I couldn't get enough of them add in Riley (Skyla's dog), and how Beckett included him in everything had me melting.
If you love suspense like I do then you'll enjoy the small snippets that we get from the stalker's POV, something Kristen does so well. This book had me so addicted that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough so prepare to be obsessed!
Once again we experience the strength of the Blackwell family, the female friendship, the bond between a dog and its owner, and the love of not only blood-related family but those we choose. Head back to Bitterroot Valley and fall in love with this amazing couple and the people that love them!
You know it’s a great book when you’re at a loss for words on how to describe your feelings toward it. When We Break has everything and more that I look for in a contemporary romance. I admired Skyla’s strength and resilience. Her backstory is hard to hear, but it’s a true reality for so many women out there. Crossing paths with the wrong man warped into an obsession that turned her world upside down, had her fearing for her and her loved one’s lives, and forced her to give up a career she was extremely passionate about.
As hard as all of that was, it also led her into the arms of Beckett Blackwell. Having to flee NYC and her crazed stalker, Skyla makes a home for herself in Bitterroot Valley. She’s not easily trusting of men, and it takes Beckett proving his worthiness to fully gain her trust. His main love language is acts of service, and this man – WOW – he’s golden book boyfriend material!
There are so many aspects to this story I love. A strong female lead, her friends that quickly become family (I love a found family story!!), a man who worships her, takes care of her and makes her feel safe, and of course I can’t leave out the animals in this story! Riley is Skyla’s trusted service dog, and while he’s big and intimidating, he’s also a fluff ball of love. Dogs are truly the ideal judges of character and how Riley immediately took to Beckett warmed my heart in ways I can’t describe. And of course, the farm animals – especially the chickens who quickly won a piece of Skyla’s heart! – added another layer to this emotionally deep story.
Beck always made Lyla feel safe. His patience and understanding with her was utterly heartwarming, but my favorite aspect? The aftercare he showed her. The spice is spicy! But the way this man gently took care of his woman, soothing her and healing her both physically and emotionally proved not only the strength of his character but also the unbreakable connection these two shared. It was so crazy beautiful to witness!
Kristen Proby is one of those authors where after I picked up one of her books, I’m hooked and had to work through her backlist. She’s truly a hidden gem indie author that I’d recommend to any contemporary romance lover! Check out this series. I promise you won’t regret it. I can’t wait for the next book!!
Thank you to Kristen Proby and Valentine PR for the #gifted digital ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
** Audio Review ** Oh my, Irish! When We Break by Kristen Proby was an endearing small-town romance that made my heart melt from start to finish. I couldn’t get enough of Beckett’s man-obsessed energy mixed with Skyla’s strong, dedicated demeanor that made these two perfect for each other. I’m absolutely obsessed with this Blackwells of Montana series!
Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and Connor Crais perform this audiobook in dual narration, and wow, did these two create an undeniably HOT chemistry between Skyla and Beckett. Stephanie’s Irish accent was ethereal and dainty, painting the perfect picture of Skyla’s skittish yet determined nature to move on from her past and give in to her desires for Beckett. (Swoon!) Connor’s warm, soothing timbre presented a steadfast reassurance and comfort only Beckett could provide for Skyla, making this man a literal walking dream. A new favorite performance from both Stephanie and Connor for sure!
Overall, I LOVED this book. If you are a fan of a small-town romance with a hot dedicated rancher, an Irish dancer, a haunted past, spicy girls book club, pizza first dates, dangerous truths, barn spice, chickens, he brushes her hair, he reads to her, creepy stalkers, private jets, training to dance again, protective brothers, love declarations, a heart pounding climax, and a HEA that will simply warm your heart, then you will love Skyla and Beckett’s story. I always look forward to more from Kristen Proby.
When We Break by Kristen Proby is book two in The Blackwells of Montana series, and I really enjoyed Beckett and Skyla’s story!
What can you expect? 🌄 Small-town romance 🤠 Cowboy romance 🇮🇪 Irish former ballerina ⚠️ Heroine in danger 📖 He reads to her 👬 Best friend’s brother
4.25 ⭐️ | 2 🌶️
Synopsis: Former ballerina Skyla Gallagher moves to Bitterroot Valley to escape a dangerous stalker and start fresh. There, Beckett Blackwell is instantly drawn to her—captivated by her beauty, Irish charm, and strength. As their connection deepens, the threat from Skyla’s past resurfaces, putting their love and safety on the line.
My thoughts: I really enjoyed Beckett and Skyla’s story. Skyla moves to Montana with her dog, Riley, to escape a stalker and build a new life. From the moment Beckett laid eyes on her, he was captivated, but it wasn’t easy for Skyla to trust again. It took him several tries to get close to her, but the chemistry between them was undeniable from the start. Beckett, or “Beck,” is patient and does everything in his power to make her feel safe and trusted.
Beck’s love language is acts of service, and he shows it in every way possible—from reading to her to taking care of her hair and making sure her dog, Riley, feels comfortable too. While their connection felt a bit like insta-love (something I’m usually not a fan of), it worked perfectly for them. Their communication was solid, and I loved seeing Skyla open up to Beck about her fears, trusting him with her heart. Oh, and let’s not forget, Beck’s cute nickname for Skyla—Irish—was just perfect, given her charm and heritage.
Skyla had to leave her ballerina career behind due to the trauma caused by her stalker, but she found a new purpose in Montana with her own dance studio. I loved seeing her embrace her new life, finding a supportive community and friends along the way. The relationship between Beck and Skyla moved quickly, but everything they did for each other felt genuine. Beck’s patience and understanding were heartwarming, and the way he made her feel safe was beautiful. Their romance was emotional and mature—there were no unnecessary third-act breakups, which I really appreciated.
Skyla is a strong, resilient woman who isn’t letting her past control her life anymore. I admired how she took control of her own future. Her family and friends were incredibly supportive, and the Blackwell family made her feel like one of their own right from the start.
As for the spice? Beck is hot—his filthy mouth paired with his tenderness was chef’s kiss. I especially loved the barn scene! They truly complemented each other, and their connection was built on mutual respect and love. Skyla’s trust in Beck and her confidence in their relationship were inspiring. Even though she came from a wealthy background, she was humble, especially when she showed affection for the chickens at Beck’s farm.
Final thoughts: This was an incredible romance—Steamy, heartfelt, and full of chemistry. Beck and Skyla's relationship was one for the books, and I can’t wait for the next one in the series!
Thank you so much to Valentine PR and Kristen Proby for the advance copy! Forever grateful.
Super sweet read! Ballerina x Cowboy. Beckett was the perfect swoon worthy MMC, just what was needed for Skyla and her trauma.
I enjoyed this. Thank you must love audio for this alc! The Irish accent of our FMC was really well done & Connor Crais, you can’t go wrong!. Brother’s best friend, meet cute, HE READS TO HER, small town, Protective MMC.
How on earth does this book have an averange of 4.46 with over 1200 ratings? I really can't see why. This book reminded me a bit of Catherine Cowles's books, but the overall quality of her books is so much better than this. She also writes guys who go out of their way for the heroines, but not to such unbelievable extent as this unicorn hero. The suspense part in her novels is also not the most believable, but at least her characters have decent/interesting backstories and there's a build-up of the suspense throughout the story.
This book tries to portray a girl with such severe ptsd she needs a support animal, but of course she takes one look at the hero and knows he's safe. He asks her out and wants to take things slow, but of course they're having intense sex everywhere on the farm the moment she steps foot on it. Of course the guy is supposedly crazy busy on his farm, but he has time to take the day off to read a maffia romance to the heroine (written by a friend of the author? There were quite some references to indie authors in here). And don't get me started on the weird dialogue, especially between the hero and the heroine (her Irish was especially cringey). The bad guy was as flat as a pancake. And my personal pet peeve: the epilogue was from Connor's pov and about him and Billie, not an epilogue for Skyla and Beckett. Which shouldn't be called an epilogue but a preview for the next book. Really annoying.
What to Expect: - Small Town Romance - Romantic Suspense - Best Friend’s Brother - He's a Rancher/Cowboy - She's a Former Ballerina - Irish FMC - Heroine in Danger - Faithful Protector (Riley the Dog 🐶) - Meet Cute - He Falls First - He Reads to Her 🥵
Small Town Romance + Kristen Proby = PERFECTION! Kristen has quickly become one of my favorite authors, and I am fully invested in the Blackwells. When We Break is so good! I couldn't put it down. Skyla and Beckett's story is perfect and put a huge smile on my face.
Skyla Gallagher is a former ballerina who leaves New York after an injury and to escape a stalker. She heads to Bitterroot Valley, Montana, hoping to find a safe space and time to heal. From the moment Beckett Blackwell meets Skyla, he’s all in. He’s obsessed in the best way, and I loved every second of it. Beckett and Skyla are so good together and have amazing chemistry. Beckett is the dream book boyfriend. The way he loved and cared for Skyla made me giddy. He was protective, respectful, DOMINANT🥵, and genuinely wanted to know everything about Skyla. Skyla instantly felt safe and comfortable being vulnerable with him.
Their romance is swoony, steamy, and I just couldn't get enough. I loved their sweet moments together. From reading steamy romance books together to the honest and open conversations, every moment between them felt natural and real. The suspense element kept me on the edge, and I loved the inclusion of the villain's point of view. I enjoyed the found family element as well. I loved how the Blackwells accepted Skyla and gave her the sense of community she needed. Riley, Skyla’s dog, was such a star! He has a great bond with Skyla and is the perfect four-legged companion. I loved this story so much and can't wait for the next book.
Narration: Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and Connor Crais perform this audiobook in dual-style narration. This audiobook is phenomenal. Stephanie and Connor are incredibly talented voice actors. It's no secret that Connor is one of my favorite male narrators. His smooth, calming voice was perfect for the bearded, swoony, and protective Beckett. Listening to Stephanie was a delight, and I loved how she brought Skyla to life. Both Stephanie and Connor fully embodied the characters, and I was super impressed with their Irish accents. I felt every single emotion! I've listened to this narrating duo a couple of times now and absolutely want more. This is a must-listen!
Thanks to Kristen Proby, Dreamscape Media, and Lyric Audiobooks for the early review opportunity. Opinions expressed are my own.
4.5 stars. After taking the weekend off from reading to move on from a book that let me down, I was beyond thrilled to start a guaranteed five star read . Kristen has become one of my fave small town romance authors and this series is so good! I really love how she writes our obsessed MMC’s with the ranch/small town setting. The narration was also great with the Irish accent for the FMC. Can’t wait for the next book already!
Skyla Gallagher was a prima ballerina but a stalker, and an injury, forces Skyla to leave her beautiful New York, and head to the open skies of Bitterroot Valley, Montana, where she will make new friends, and open a dance studio, teaching to children. Meeting Beck Blackwell stirs something deep within our story line heroine but the demons from her past refuse to let go, and Skyla struggles to open her heart to anyone else. Beckett Blackwell is a rancher, and very close to his siblings and friends but meeting Skyla Gallagher pushes Beckett to pursue the woman with whom he will fall in love but Skyla’s stalker refuses to back down, and law enforcement claim their hands are tied.
The relationship between Skyla and Beckett is one of mutual attraction but Skyla struggles with the betrayal from the past. Beckett is determined to prove Skyla is worthy of love; a second chance to claim a happily ever after. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
When We Break is the second title in The Blackwells of Montana series written by Kristen Proby.
What to expect: *Stalker *Instalust *Small town
Seriously considering moving to Montana so that I can find my own real life cowboy!! Beckett is the king of aftercare and I want him to wash my hair for me!
Beckett and Skyla were great together! This series is turning out to be just as good as the Wilds of Montana series by this author! Very well written storylines.
No OW drama. Some OM drama in the form of the FMC having a stalker that will not accept no from her. No third act breakup!
"it’s sorry I am for making you uncomfortable." these sentence structures keep coming up. I'm not sure if it was something to do with attempting at an Irish accent but between that and "Irish" being the Irish chick's nickname - I could not. And we also don't say feck and bloody as fecking much as this book would have you believe. Fuck is also acceptable 😂
Plus, we have this woman who was stalked for 2 years! Had a man break into her home, destroy her career and now has a service guard dog but invites Beckett into her home on the first date, tells him her security code and even though she hasn't told anyone bar her brother the whole stalker story, she tells everything to him right away? Come on! Make him work for it even slightly?
I tried and I stuck it through. And sticking it through is where I wasted my time. Now I love a good damsel in distress story and a man who’s gon take care of his woman! But this wasn’t no woman! She was treated like a baby by the male lead the whole time. Baby let her walk herself to the tub to clean off she’ll be alright. I just feel as though this story could have been so so much better if it wasn’t so predictable and the male character wasn’t so….”simpy”. Like I said, I like the idea of where this book was going but it didn’t execute for me. Oh and don’t get me started on the ending. I almost hollered from laughter and how easily the solution came about. Sorry sweetie.
I really liked the 1st book of this series and I was super excited to dive into this second part 🥰. Super grateful for being accepted to be part of Kristy's ARC team for this one. Thank you Kristy and Valentine Pr🤗.
Skyla is a super talented ballerina who, unfortunately, is faced with a disturbing situation, where an obsessed man is continuously stalking her. Because she has no chance of getting rid of him, Skyla decides to move away, to be far from her stalker.
In the new small town she will find a second family and someone special: Beckett Blackwell. Skyla felt something different about him from the first time she saw Beckett, something comforting and safe. After her trauma with her stalker, Skyla really needed someone like Beckett by her side. But will she be safe anywhere? Will she be able to be happy and not constantly be worried about her safety?
First of all, I instantly fell in love with this beautiful relationship Skyla and Beckett had built. It was super fun, natural and offered Skyla a protectiveness which was beyond anything she ever imagined. Second of all, can I confess that I fell in love with everything about Beckett: he was kind, thoughtful, sweet, attentive and a fighter. I adored some scenes he and Skyla shared, being something beyond wonderful. But all their happiness wasn't guaranteed and they needed to find a way to fight against the evil which was constantly lurking. Riley, the dog Skyla was constantly having around her was one of my favorite things in this story, loving his faithfulness and how easy he got attached to the people who really deserved to be part of Skyla'a life.
One love story filled with many types of emotions and states, intertwining all perfectly with the swoony romance, some pretty suspenseful and with those mysterious parts, which I really liked, offering more to the story as a whole. The large gang of brothers and their loved ones brought the good vibes and fun side of this book, for which I'll always have a soft spot.
ok that was fun! get this… he blow drys her hair while she relaxes & listens to music. like come ooon!?!? 😩 The Blackwell men catering to their woman is top tierrrrr. I loveee🧡
Cowboy & dairy farm owner MMC x Dancer FMC❤️🔥 Small town & found family tropes xoxo they just fit together so well every time😩
𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕: 🐣 small town 🐣 former ballerina now dance teacher 🐣 cowboy 🐣 aftercare 🐣 he reads to her 🐣 best friend's brother
𝑴𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔:
Former ballerina Skyla left New York for Montana because she has a stalker. And I was a little afraid Beckett would be too much for her at first because of that, but it turns out he was just perfect.
Their love story feels instant but the growth we are shown, their feelings developing, their conversations,... it all brings it together and make them the perfect pair.
And of course I'm a sucker for romantic suspense and this one was so good! All the details we were told, it felt like being inside the stalker's head which is something I love 👀
I have such a good time with the Blackwells of Montana and their sense of family and community is the best.
If you love ranch, dance, small town, suspense, this is definitely for you!
This was exactly what I needed … a soft, swoony love story that just hit all the right spots. Normally I’m not an instalove girlie, but this one? It worked. Skyla and Beckett were magic together. And Beckett? He treated Skyla like gold. I swear he’s been added to my book boyfriend list and I’m not even sorry about it. Honestly, this book gave me all the warm fuzzies and I adored every second of it.
The beginning of this book felt a little rushed and choppy to me. After that, it felt like I just never got into it completely with the characters and storyline. There were some good moments though.
Absolutely adoreddddd.Skyla and Beckett had the best chemistry and were just so fun together. I loved how protective Beckett quickly became and loved how easily Skyla opened up and felt safe with him. Their love was so good and swoony! I absolutely ateeeee up the suspense of Skyla trying to escape her stalker. It kept me on the edge of my seat and made it to where I could NOT stop reading! Overall, lots of happiness, some emotional moments (looking at you Riley 🐶), and the perfect amount of spice!
