And Puyallup’s local paranormal investigator Jimmy Kincaid is caught right in the middle of it. The neighborhood’s criminal syndicates are on the brink of all-out war, and if they go at it, the streets will run red—literally.
But Jimmy’s got more problems besides trying to keep the peace between feuding mobsters. Someone’s sending him a very particular message by sending him severed limbs. And then there’s the pairs of hitmen coming after him. Last but certainly not least, he’s got to broker a deal between the biggest elven street gang in Seattle and a vicious Triad gang—and not get himself killed in the bargain.
But when an old enemy comes to town for revenge, Jimmy finds his already fairly chaotic life completely upended—and never to be the same again. To settle the score, he’ll have to face off against the deadliest assassin ever to stalk the Seattle streets—and use every bit of skill, guile, and luck he has to survive….

With On The Rocks, Zimmerman gives us the most intense entry in the series yet. For a series that tends to crank up plenty of pressure, that is saying a lot.
With the multiple points of view of the previous novel, I enjoyed learning more about other characters in the series, but I have to admit, I could read from Jimmy's POV until the sun grew cold, and with On The Rocks, we go back to following Jimmy around nearly full time.
After almost dying, Jimmy is doing his best to leave the major leagues behind and go back to street level dealings, but the events of the past are coming to a boil, and Jimmy can't avoid reaping what he has sown.
Zimmerman is in fine form, and he gives a fantastic amout of flavor to Puyallup and its denizens. Hell, there is even a Dominican piraguero in the neighborhood, and reading about him made my day. The writing is top notch, the action sharp, and Kincaid's humor black as Puyallup ash.
Kincaid goes through a wringer, and he does not come out unscathed. Zimmerman delivers multiple gut punches, pulls on your heartstring plenty, but the laughs and the sheer grit that he imbues into Jimmy really balance it out.
It might be his finest book yet. I could not stop reading.
I definitely want more. I will keep buying Kincaid books (and anything he publishes) as long as he keeps cranking them out.
An interesting shift in the story of Jimmy Kincaid
I really love the cyberpunk detective noir feel of this series, but I was starting to feel like Jimmy was a little too powerful, a little too Gary Stu, if you will. This book definitely turned things on its ear and responded to my feelings a bit. Definitely looking forward to seeing where things go now.
Eh, I'm tired of the same villains, the mafia turf wars, Jimmy's poor choices. And now with Jimmy losing what little magic he had left ... no hacking, no runs ... I'm not sure how this is Shadowrun anymore.

Wonderful entry in the saga of Jimmy Kincade. A rollercoaster ride from cover to cover. Rusty kept me hungry all the way through the book and ready for the next installment.
