Douglas Cavanaugh writes from the heart in his book The Long Way Around. World War ll novels are quite popular these days and Mr. Cavanaugh has written a book that weaves some WWll history into a present day story.

Full of midwestern charm and scenery this book is one that will stick with you after you finish it. A wonderful book to read and share with a friend. Thank you to the author for providing me a free copy for an honest review.
This was a very interesting and intriguing story. I loved reading details about rural life in Iowa as I've never been exposed to that part of the US. I also liked how the author intertwined a little bit of Croatian motives into the story as I am personally partial to that culture. The style of writing kept me interested in wanting to know what is happening next. I could not wait to get to the next chapter. I felt like I knew the protagonist personally and was rooting for him the entire time. There was a part of the book where the protagonist meets with the unnatural during his hunt and that almost made me think the book was going to be a sci-fi one, which kept me on my toes throughout. Initially, I thought that using the unnatural event was not needed based on how the rest of the book evolved but it indeed was a crucial part of the story. One can interpret it in many different ways but I like to see it as a turning point in a young man's life, just like most of us have a life-turning points that affect the rest of our lives. And very often, those turning points may have no explanations nor reason.
Well, Doc Cavanaugh has given us another thriller. Much different than his first. His first book was full of Serbian and Bosnian gangsters. This book is a bit more sedate, but still full of gangsters. All American bred this time. The Long Way Around keeps you up at night, just like John Grisham. I wonder what the next book will be. Surely more gangsters, just the locale will surely change. A highly recommended read.
I enjoyed The Long Way Around. I am a native Iowan, currently living in Davenport, but my hometown is Oelwein. The descriptions of the Iowa landscape and the people living in northeast Iowa are spot on. The story is so believable and heartwarming, I was engrossed from start to finish. Ryan's adventures and mishaps are well described.
