Lizzy Albright, a red-headed, freckle-faced girl from Overland Park, Kansas, is celebrating her tenth birthday on Christmas Eve 1964. An impending winter storm is approaching as Lizzy and her family travel to Cordelia, Kansas, where they plan to spend the holidays with Granny in the McHale family mansion. An imaginative young girl, an antique quilt, a goose named Gretta, and a cursed kingdom combine as the foundation for a fantastic fantasy filled with surprise, wonderment, betrayal, bravery, mystery, and intrigue. The only thing to expect is the unexpected because - not everything is as it seems. A story that connects generations! For middle grades and young adults of all ages.
This is a middle grade, and this is the first book in the Lizzy Albright series. I really loved driving into the book and spending time with all these characters. The characters where really developed, and they where easy to feel in love with. I love the world in this book. This book is well written and it makes you want to keep reading it. I have purchase the kindle edition of this book, so my daughter can have it on her kindle. I also can see this being a great movie maybe someone will make this into a movie. I just know she is going to love this book as much as I loved it. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Autumn Rock Publishing) or author (Ricky Tims and Kim Bowser) via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review about how I feel about this book, and I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

This middle grade fantasy novel was so much fun to read - it was highly engaging, full of action and adventure, that really entertained me. Lizzy Albright, an insightful ten year old from Kansas who saves the royal family from a curse. This magical and fantastical story is made even more fun with Gretta the goose, and a quilt. Every page is full of excitement, mystery, and bravery.
What can the author say, but... I thought it turned out great. All things can be improved - and passion over perfection... but I'll let others speak about the impact and story.
WOW! To borrow the quilt motif (and I am not a quilter), the plot lines of Lizzy Albright are not just stitched together but well designed and crafted. The cloaked facets within the story compel me to read this book again SOON! Artistry flows throughout Ricky's quilts, photography, musical compositions, drawings and now literary efforts. MORE, please!
The changing timeline made it a challenge for my young listeners so we did recaps every chapter after a bit. The twists were very well woven and kept everyone unawares until the very end. We all can't wait for the next adventure! My only complaint: The description of Ravol's attack was a bit too graphic for the kids
My mom is a quilter. A fanatic one even. She makes one artpiece after the other. Some from patterns in books, but some she simply designs herself based on whatever she finds on the internet. So, when browsing through a Dutch Quilt webshop she discovered this book WITH the pattern to make the quilt. She can't read English, but I can, so the book became my St. Nicholas present. Am I still in time to have her have the quilt ready for this year's festivities?
Because what a lovely and magical story was this! Lizzy Albright is a girl you instantly like. Her enthusiasm is contagious and I loved how she clearly carried so much love in her heart. I also like how she kept herself up in the magical world she was visiting. She wasn't some reckless risk-taker, but she also knew that to get somewhere she had to move forward. I think that if you had put me in a magical world at that age, I'd have been exactly like her.
Especially because the world Lizzy ends up in is quite amazing! They're technically far more advanced than our society, which means that for Lizzy it's really a world from a faraway future, there is magic and people can visit a magical school to learn everything about it and humans live there alongside all kinds of magical animals! It's a petty there's no drawing of the Kangaroo with batwings, because I think it is easily my favorite creature ever.
And like every good fantasy world there is a battle going on between good and evil, with Lizzy being the only one who can end it. At times it felt like the side stories were told in a bit too much detail, although it did help us to remember the names of all the members of the royal family to get to know them better, but all the pieces of the puzzle and the story of what has really happened and who has really played which role clicked together quite nicely in the end.
I hope there will be another book, because I quite enjoyed myself!
Hooked from the beginning...this book is very relatable to the time frame that I grew up in but once I hit the climax...from that point on I couldn’t put it down. The twists and turns were perfect. I mean...Bang! If you have teenagers, they will surely enjoy this read!
This fable has a somewhat slow start in 1960s Kansas, as a family head off to spend the winter holidays with Grandmother. A pre-teen girl Lizzie gets invited to accompany a talking goose to another kingdom, and she brings her Scottish terrier, who begins to speak with her. The jumping back and forth to other more mature characters in the kingdom, and across time lines, may confuse readers of this age. I thought this kind of weaving, while well done, would be better left for young teens. Many references to 1960s pop culture. Readers will enjoy the various talking animals which fill roles, and will keep turning pages to see if Lizzy is the lost princess or not, and whether the curse on the land can be lifted. Have fun. I read an e-ARC from Fresh Fiction and Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.
i have read this book. I love the adventure that started very easy going. the Build up is great! You get through the characters, then wonder what are they up to. Started by doing the audio listening on pod cast. i love the pod cast. You heard the pre-story introduction.. then.. wonderment starts building. I love how it is a blend of Alice in wonderland, and folklores. Wow! i couldn't wait to for the book to arrive. i am still excited. can't wait to get my t-shirt. then share this with my youngest great nephews who are new to reading and enjoying books. there are many great surprises in this book. must read!! Wait! i am making the quilt. My sister, bless her soul, will be helping me. i am twice excited!! thankyou, Lynette Ruta, and my big sister too.
Ah yes, Lizzie Albright, a quilt and a goose. An amazingly engaging story that will keep readers of all ages engrossed in it. The story has several challenges that present themselves and Lizzie must find a way to sew the ends back together again and save the royal family. Full of magic and adventure that is sure to engage with children, teenagers and adults. As a quilter who has taught my preteen niece how to quilt also, it seemed to catch her attention faster. The changes from reality to dreams was well written with little to no extra unneeded info. Overall, I must say that this novel should be made into a movie and it is worth 5+++ stars.
Thank you to goodreads as well as the author/publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
Although this is set in the 60's as an 80's baby i could still appreciate the nostalgia at the beginning of this book. Woolworths, kodak cameras and the beatles. Ahhh what a time to be alive! Lizzy was a great character and I loved her relationship with her grandmother. I liked that it was set around Christmas as it made it a bit more magical and I really enjoyed the descriptions, characters and language of Ailear. It reminded me of the forest that maleficent lives in. The synopsis doesn't give much away but the story was alot more indepth than I thought it would be which I really loved and I did not see the ending coming!!
This book is written by an accomplished artist who is a musician, fiber artist, quilter, and all-around creative person. The story centers around a 10-year-old girl and a special Christmas. The writing is wonderfully detailed, with a large dose of mystery and fantasy. If you liked Harry Potter, you will most likely love this book.
A delightful, suspenseful, and so very entertaining. This novel is wonderfully written. The plot is full of twists and turns that keep you wanting to read and read and read. I am 60 years young and reading this delightful story brought so many things I remembered growing up. It is a book many generations will enjoy.
Wonderful book! I read it by myself and am looking forward to introducing my grandkids to Lizzy. I know that they are going to love it even more than I do. I’m saving it for a time in the near future when COVID is over and they can come sit beside me and I can read them the story. I already bought wands for each of them as well!
I enjoyed the fantasy. It was easy reading and transitions from reality to fantasy/dream and back were smooth. Being a quilter, I kept noticing references to various quilt patterns throughout the book. If I were 50 years younger Lizzy would make me want to learn more about quilts and quilting. It is very well written for the middle school age child.
This is such a fun read and one I would encourage you to read with your tweens! I can't recommend this enough and hope to give the book for Christmas to a couple ladies who are teacher's in my family!
Its a good book especially for middle grade kids but for me it was a mix of Narnia, Wizard of Oz, and Snow White. It’s a very descriptive book with good characters and story line and I can see it turning into a movie one day (maybe). Thank you for this gifted copy.
We have only read a few excerpts from the book, but my granddaughter and I can hardly wait to get our hands on it. We plan to attempt making the quilt together. She is 11 and a beginning sewist.
previews of this special novel have been extraordinary! I cannot wait to get my copy and start reading it cover to cover to my grandsons! Thank you Ricky! Well done!
