The narrator of the story enjoyed visiting his grandma and helping her out. One day when they were returning from shopping a black cat followed them home. Grandma enjoyed stroking the cat, who also enjoying the experience followed them home.

The cat would not leave them and mysteriously the garden gate opened to allow him in and the next thing they knew he was sitting on the door mat inside the house. Grandma gave him cream and when he finished it the saucer flew into the air and landed gently on the sink.

They found a name tag on him, Marmaduke, and an address of Cobblestone Cottage. Grandma was horrified for she knew the cottage and said that it was rumoured that it was a witch who lived there. They decided to take the cat home but on the way there strange things happened all around them.

At the cottage they discovered a lady with wild frizzy hair, big round glasses and crazy coloured clothes, she certainly didn't look like a witch! She was pleased to have Marmaduke back and she asked him (with no reply of course) 'Now, what have you been up to?' The house was full of cats but the kind lady gave her visitors cake and tea. While they were imbibing Grandma asked the lady if she was a witch, to which she replied, 'Yes, of course I am. But not all witches are evil. Most of us are good, and we like to help people.'

The outcome of the visit was that the lady asked Grandma if she would like to look after Marmaduke for her as he had obviously taken a shine to her. So they all went home on the witch's motor bike and sidecar. And Marmaduke lived happily with Grandma ... but you would never believe the mysterious things that went on when Marmaduke was around ...

Also illustrated by the author, 'Marmaduke the Magic Cat' is a fun read, which will, I have no doubt, be very much enjoyed by youngsters.
